How to make a difference: a KPMG guide to WE programs

How to make a difference in your community A Guide to WE Programs

Together with WE, KPMG is encouraging youth to drive social change through literacy-building efforts and advocacy. See inside to learn how you can get involved!

Introducing our WE partnership

Welcome to WE

Dear Change-maker,

Dear KPMG family,

That’s why I’m thrilled that KPMG has partnered with WE—an organization and movement that brings people together and gives them tools to change the world. For example, the WE Schools service-learning program is impacting students in more than 14,500 schools. In addition, each year in 14 cities across North America, WE Day inspires and celebrates more than 250,000 young people for taking action in their local and global communities. KPMG has teamed up with WE to inspire and engage young people and their families through these WE programs and more, including an 80-stop annual speaking tour that works to empower youth to become reading mentors and advocates for literacy. You can learn more in this simple guide and discover the many ways you and your family can get involved in our WE partnership. I hope you’ll join this great movement!

WE is excited to partner with KPMG U.S.! Our work together will help make a positive social impact both locally and globally. By supporting causes you care about, like youth literacy and the power of lifelong learning, you inspire others by being a force for good in your communities. While making a difference can be its own reward, you’ll also discover other benefits—from feeling a deeper connection to your coworkers, your clients, your family and your community, to experiencing a greater sense of satisfaction and purpose. And you’re guaranteed to have some fun along the way.

But where do you start? Our role is to bring people together and give you the tools to change the world. That’s why we couldn’t be more excited to welcome you to the WE partnership and demonstrate the different ways to take action. We created this guide to inspire you to take the next steps, join together with your families and colleagues, and get involved. From the WE Read Together literacy campaign to WE Day events near you, the WE partnership with KPMG offers you a number of fun and fulfilling ways to give back to others by sharing your time, expertise and passion for making a difference. Working together, let’s foster hope, promote optimism, build community and get started shaping a better world, today and for generations to come.

One of the things that makes me most proud is the way our people are always willing to make a tangible difference for our clients, communities, and each other. That giving spirit permeates our unique culture—a culture that I believe is a real strength and differentiator for us. Our culture is fueled by our values—and that drives who we are and what we do. Across our firm, there are countless examples of how our people inspire others by living our values and bringing passion and purpose to everything they do. We’re committed to leveraging that incredible energy as well as the expertise of our people to improve the communities in which we live and work. Through citizenship programs like KPMG’s Family for Literacy, we’ve put a special focus on youth and education and are investing in sustaining our communities by empowering young people to succeed in school, in the workplace, and as engaged citizens.

Sincerely,

Lynne Doughtie Chairman and Chief Executive Officer KPMG U.S.

Readership to Leadership KPMG is passionate about empowering youth with the leadership skills they need to be successful. By providing access to books and promoting literacy in communities around the world, KPMG and WE are helping to create lifelong learners and advocates for literacy.

WE Schools The WE Schools service-learning educational program is transforming students in over 14,500 schools, empowering them to apply their learning to solve real-world issues and turning classrooms into creative incubators for social good. Young people learn leadership and communication skills, collaboration and entrepreneurship—21st-century life skills that are often missed by traditional models of education. Studies show that students in WE Schools develop resiliency, grit and perseverance. And they develop the experience and confidence to succeed in college, in the workplace and as engaged citizens. Knowledge Is Power Curriculum This curriculum package, developed with KPMG, provides educators with lesson plans and activities to help students in grades 2 through 12 understand literacy as a social issue, examine its foundations and recognize its impact on their daily lives. Students work together to plan actions they can take to increase literacy rates within their communities.

WE Read Together Campaign This WE Schools action campaign, made possible by KPMG, helps young people share the importance of reading and literacy by encouraging them to start a book drive or become a reading buddy to a younger child in the community. With access to books, children are better equipped to build critical reading skills and are more likely to reach their academic potential. In support of the campaign and to demonstrate the commitment of KPMG’s Family for Literacy, KPMG is encouraging employees to read with the children in their lives and share the experience on social media using #WEreadtogether and #TangibleDifference.

A great way to interact with coworkers while helping kids.” “You can really see the impact this has on kids.” “I did not expect the issues discussed to be so deep and relevant to society today. It promoted thought-provoking conversation and the youth were enthralled by the topics.”

KPMG at WE Day KPMG is proud to be a presenting level partner at WE Day events in Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, New York and Seattle. On the WE Day stage, KPMG has teamed up with U.S. Olympic Gold Medalist Laurie Hernandez to champion literacy and access to books. KPMG leaders and Hernandez raise awareness about KPMG’s Family for Literacy program and encourage audience members to use social media to share “The Book That” changed their lives, with KPMG donating a book for each mention. At the events, a spinning wheel and a bookshelf are unique components of KPMG’s interactive WE Day booth. Each arm of the wheel represents a different category: inspiration, creativity or passion. With a spin of the wheel, young change-makers get to choose a corresponding book from the bookshelf to take home as their very own. How you can make a difference ► ► Volunteer with your team at WE Day. ► ► Register your child’s school as a WE School so they have a chance to attend WE Day. ► ► KPMG welcomes a select group of clients at WE Day. Talk with your OMP if you think this experience might be a good fit for your client.

Share the power of WE Day WE Day is a celebration of good.

Each year, over 250,000 young people come together in 14 stadiums across the U.S., Canada and the UK. Plus, millions more tune in to our live-stream and televised broadcasts.
