SIMPLE TIPS TO STAY COOL USING YOUR ORTHOSIS & PROSTHESIS

keep some ice handy so you can apply as needed to avoid unwanted swelling and irritation from the heat. • Talk with your CPO if you notice discomfort. Sometimes an orthosis or prosthesis will have to be altered in order to allow for different physical activities. Additionally, it is normal for the limbs to swell a bit in the summer, which may make your device seem tight or uncomfortable. If you notice any discomfort at all, your CPO can provide you with the resources you need to enjoy a cool and comfortable summer. At Howard Orthotics and Prosthetics, we know that it can sometimes be difficult to enjoy certain activities when dealing with the struggles of an orthotic or prosthetic device. However, your device shouldn’t stop you from participating in fun summer activities! To learn more about how you can beat the heat and enjoy your summer with your orthosis or prosthesis, contact Howard Orthotics and Prosthetics today!

(continued from outside) • Keep a dry towel handy. One of the easiest ways to stay cool while wearing an orthotic or prosthetic device is to keep a dry towel around to wipe off any sweat buildup. Make sure to dry off both your device itself, as well as any liner you may have, in addition to the skin that it covers. For added relief from the heat, wrap the towel in an ice pack to allow for a cool compress when wiping away sweat! • Use prosthetic socks. If you use a prosthetic device, it is important to use prosthetic socks when going out in the heat. This will help keep the skin beneath your prosthesis dry, in order to avoid slipping and chafing. • Ice the area as needed. Keeping a small cooler around with ice or an ice pack is a good idea when staying outside for extended periods of time. Heat can cause the limbs to swell and ache as you walk, and ice can help you find some relief. So, whether you’re hiking some trails or relaxing on the beach, make sure to

HEALTHY RECIPE FARRO SALAD WITH HERBED BALSAMIC VINAIGRETTE

INGREDIENTS • 1 cup pearled emmer wheat farro* • 5 ounces baby spinach leaves • 1 medium avocado, diced • 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved • 1/2 cup quartered artichoke hearts For the Dressing • 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar • 1/4 cup olive oil • 1/4 cup water • 2 tablespoons maple syrup • 2 garlic cloves, minced

• 1/4 cup fresh parsley • 1/4 cup chopped chives • 2 tablespoons fresh thyme leaves • 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, or to taste

INSTRUCTIONS Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the farro and allow it to cook at a rolling boil. While the farro cooks, make the dressing. Place all ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth. After the farro has boiled for about 15 minutes, remove a couple grains and test them for doneness. The cook time should be in the range of 15 to 20 minutes. When the farro is done cooking, drain it into a strainer. Let the farro sit in the strainer for a fewminutes to cool. Place the cooked farro into a large mixing bowl, along with the spinach, avocado, cherry tomatoes, and artichoke hearts. Drizzle the dressing over the salad (use as much as you like) and toss to coat. Season the salad with salt and pepper to taste. Divide onto plates and serve.
