Back in the Day Photographed November 20, 2016 during that season’s first snowstorm, this Ford truck had seen many first snow falls in its 70 years. Before it’s “semi-retirement” to be on display at the Crossings restaurant on Hyde Park Road for a time, it had worked on a farm near Wallaceburg. Does anyone know more about it’s history? New Year – New Smile with Hyde Park Dentistry
Your smile is one of the first things that people notice about you,” say Drs. Papneja and Moaveni of Hyde Park Dentistry. “And with the latest technologies and techniques, it’s never been easier to transform your smile into one that you are proud of.” Hyde Park Dentistry offers porcelain veneers, same day crowns, esthetic ceramics, SureSmile clear aligners and in-office whitening – all designed to simplify and minimize the process to achieving the smile you desire. Porcelain veneers are one of the most popular services requested by patients at Hyde Park Dentistry. “You don’t need to be a movie star or have a celeb-sized budget to benefit from these veneers,” says Dr. Moaveni. “They are custom-crafted from very thin pieces of durable, natural-looking porcelain and then bonded onto the front of the teeth, instantly concealing issues such as chips, gaps, or stains. Generally, veneers are completed in two visits.” Dental implants are another popular option for patients missing one or more teeth due to disease or injury. “A dental implant is a titanium post that is placed into the jawbone after tooth loss. The jawbone grows around the implant, giving it the foundation it needs to support a crown, bridge, or denture,” explains Dr. Papneja who has received specialized implant training and has placed and restored dental implants for many happy patients. Of course, while cosmetic dentistry can improve your smile, preventive care through routine checkups and cleanings is of utmost importance to the Hyde Park Dentistry team. Observing for gum and periodontal disease, screening for oral cancer, resolving
Dr. Marjan Moaveni Dr. Ashish Papneja issues that can be caused from dry mouth or grinding are all things they look at during routine checkups. Other preventive measures include dental sealants (coverings to protect decay-prone molars) and safe fluoride supplementation to strengthen enamel – a tooth’s protective armour. Patients at Hyde Park Dentistry comment often that the friendly and caring team of receptionists, dentists, hygeinists and dental assistants provide for a relaxed and informed visit. The modern facility has floor to ceiling windows, providing a warm environment and plenty of free parking outside. For information on all things about your oral health, Hyde Park Dentistry posts frequent blogs on their website (www. hydeparkdentistry.ca) and would be happy to schedule an appointment to evaluate your best way to a New Smile for the New Year!

Neighbour of Note: ScottBollert Soon after moving to London in 1998, Scott Bollert found himself honing his jazz vocal skills and performing as a front man of a band. In 2001 he and guitarist Bryan Parsons decided to ‘go rock’, performing original music 3-4 nights a week province-wide as After The Lounge .
After getting an itch for doing jazz again, Bollert did a ‘one off’ show
in 2010 with some local musicians that by popular demand turned into regular gigs with a name of Scott Bollert and the Jazzman Band . Now regulars at Michaels on the Thames and other local venues, in 2015 they created a tribute style show to perform ‘A Taste of Sinatra’, highly popular, especially with local retirement communities. “A few of my favourites to perform are Witchcraft, You Make Me Feel So Young and Sunny Side of the Street ,” says Scott. This band usually hosts a Christmas show at a London venue, but went bigger this year. “With the pandemic still lingering and venues just starting to open, we thought we’d film a show and offer it to television,” said Bollert. Through his company Bollert Entertainment , Scott rented the PalaceTheatre and brought inmusic producer DariusSzczepaniak, who is producing a CD of the performance. The showwas televised on Rogers Cable this holiday season across the province. After The Lounge though is technically Scott’s main band, enjoying world-wide success and sharing the stage with many major acts and numerous singles like Sunshine, Easy Love and Bang, Bang . “My family was always about music when I was growing up. No matter where or what we were doing, my parents had all
the major hits of the time cranked up on a radio,” recalls Scott. “My 77 year old father is still like this and has the music blasting everywhere he is. His playlist on his phone is Kings of Leon to David Bowie with the odd Elvis Presley coming up. When I was a kid my Dad always talked about singing in the choir as a kid at Carnegie Hall in New York. It was his claim to fame, always mentioned in a humouous way to me. My brother was a drummer and a DJ. When I was an early teen I was D-Jing with him at high school dances, Buck n Does and weddings in the Norfolk County area where I grew up. I always knew I was a performer as a kid and would be doing something to entertain my family. My love for Frank Sinatra came from a reflection of my Dad’s relationship with my Grandfather (his Dad). My Grandfather’s favourite song was My Way . My Grandfather was a kind of Chairman of the Board of our extended family you could say.” “The best feeling for me as a performer is when people know or enjoy the songs you wrote. To see a large crowd (like in the London Music Hall photo above) gravitate to songs you comprised is exhilarating.” Bollert is an advocate for helping and developing young artists. Have a listen at www.reverbnation.com/afterthelounge and on youtube.com/afterthelounge1, on Spotify and Apple I- Tunes. Follow them on Facebook.com/afterthelounge and Facebook.com/scott.atl. Learn more at jazzmanband.com and at bollertentertainment.com. Terry LouiseWoods – the Knitting Lady!
Having previously knitted only a few small items as a child, Terry picked up a pair of knitting needles in 2008 and began her journey of playing with colour and texture to produce amazing artisan hand-knit fashion accessories. Designs feature a focus on casual simplicity, style and comfort and SMALL BATCH – not mass produced offshore – hats, cowls, blankets and more. No two pieces are identical. Terry’s values – creativity and passion – are behind each piece. Known in some circles as “The Knitting Lady”, Terry is happy to assist others with a pattern or design challenge, and as a six- time cancer survivor donates a portion of her sales to the Breast Cancer Clinic. Those funds are used right here in London.
Page 8 Hyde Park – Oakridge Villager • Jan-Feb 2022 Historic Hyde Park Excerpt from London Middlesex Historical Society Part IV (Published 1913) On December 19th, 1818, Mr. Mackenzie’s second daughter, Mary, was born, the first white female child born in the district, and the oldest living native white person in this neighborhood. She is now eighty-six years of age, in full possession of all her faculties, a regular attendant at the Presbyterian Church at Hyde Park, and quite capable of superintending the dinner for the family on Sundays when the weather prevents her attend- ing church. She is also an expert needle-woman, being quite at home on such fine and intricate work as netting, doilies, etc. On their farm they had the usual privations of all early settlers, al- though as this district was settled with comparative rapidity, their hardships were much less than in many other parts of the province. Forty years after Mrs. Duncan Mackenzie settled near Hyde Park, the wolves made it impossible to raise sheep west of Chatham. Each family was in a measure compelled to be self-sustaining and self-reliant. The first orchard in this neighborhood was planted by Mr. Mackenzie with trees grown fromapple seeds which he brought with him from the old country. Instead of handsome cooking stoves the settlers had the crane and pot hooks, which with a pair of tongs dec- orated every chimney. Each family made its own soap and candles, made its own yarn, and worked it up into mittens, stockings, com- forters, etc., and made in fact, most of its own clothes and furniture. One of the pleasures which Mrs. Mackenzie’s children and grand children well remember was to go out to the bush with her while she would be gathering herbs for medicinal uses. Not only hys- sop and hoar-hound were found, but sweet cicely, squaw-berries, Terry Louise Woods never dreamed that what started as a hobby to fill time while recovering from cancer would evolve into a business that not only provides some extra retirement income but more importantly, an opportunity to meet and support other knitters – and cancer survivors.

Bunches of these herbs adorned the ample kitchen, as well as golden corn braided by the husks, and onions by their tops. In the large dining-room adjoining, the family gathered in the winter evenings around the open fire with its blazing logs; and while the girls would be knitting or sewing, and the boys engaged in knitting or other occupations, their mother would read aloud for she was a woman of literary taste and good education for those days. Terry enjoys the central location of her mostly-senior building near Wonderland and Riverside. “There’s bus service at the door and a lovely park right across the street,” she says. “Gratitude ismy happiness drug,” exclaimsTerry. “I make every day count and remind myself of all the reasons I have to be grateful. I’m especially thankful for my loyal friends and customers.” Visit Terry at www.KNITSbytlw.ca and on Facebook (knitsbyTerryLouiseWoods) and on Instagram

Knitted ‘Sarah’ caps, shawls, cowls, and ‘Big Blankets’ are popular. Terry’s booth at the Western Fair Farmers Market, 2nd floor, also offers colourful, unique market baskets, hand woven in Ghana.

The Banting Beat by Amaris Peng, Banting Student Council member We’ve had a great start since the beginning of the school year. The past few months have been nothing but amazing, with great spirit days, fundraisers, as well as success in sports and other activities. We started the year with two great fundraisers hosted by the Banting Fundraising Committee. This year’s #BroncosCan food drive was a great success, and all donations were sent to the London Food Bank. During Diabetes Week, we also collected clothing donations for the Canadian Diabetes Association. Many of our great pre-pandemic activities made a return to our school – with amazing student participation and great outcomes as well! Bronco Musicians put together a wonderful holiday concert, where the bands and choirs shared lovely video performances of the pieces they had been working on. Our students in the Banting Debate Club also finished the year with an impressive debate tournament, while the Banting Business Club enjoyed participating in a real-life online stock market simulation and competing in online JOT Business Competitions! Leaders from the Banting Coding Club hosted the Hour of Code sessions during Computer Science Education Week in the Library Learning Commons for all students to learn how to code. Our Reach for the Top Teams have also been hard at work during lunch-time practices, and performed incredibly during their most recent competition in December, advancing to their next Reach Tournament this year. We saw remarkable performances in the athletics department, with a strong regular season and exceptional playoff run from the Banting Junior Boy’s Volleyball team, who became TVRA central Champions! The Banting Curling Team, Girl’s Basketball, and Football Teams also had wonderful seasons. Just recently, our school was honoured to induct Banting Alumni, World Swimming Champion, and Olympic Swimming Champion Maggie MacNeil into the Banting Athletics Wall of Fame. We appreciated her visit back to Banting and her sharing her thoughts with our community virtually. It was great seeing so many of our Broncos back on the field, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for many of our other Bronco Athletes!
Sir Frederick BantingHigh School Wall of Fame Named after the London physician who won a Nobel Prize for the discovery of insulin, Sir Frederick Banting Secondary School has produced many notable Canadians. To recognize their achievements, promote school pride and inspire students, the school maintains an Alumni of Distinction display and a Wall of Fame. The most recent inductee to the school’s Wall of Fame is World and Olympic Swimming Champion Maggie MacNeil. “Maggie was able to visit and share her thoughts with our community virtually,” said Banting history teacher William McKeown. “The ceremony included performances by the Banting Senior Band. Huge thanks to Maggie for making the time to visit us. We’re excited to cheer her on in the months and years ahead.” A video of the ceremony may be watched at: https://bit.ly/mmceremony

Optimism for Oakridge in 2022 by Bill Adams
Our Optimism was rising in early December as we hoped the worst of the Covid-19 pandemic would be behind us in 2022. The arrival of the rapidly spreading Omicron variant in the London area has forced the Oakridge Optimist Club to put on the brakes a little as we head into the new year. Our biggest event of the year is our annual Trivia Night. It’s our biggest fundraiser and we didn’t hold it in 2021 due to covid. We were on track for a sold out event for February 5th this year but made the decision to cancel it after new restrictions on indoor gatherings were enacted by the province in early January. The restrictions might have been lifted in time for our event but we decided to postpone it until 2023. We still have another Trivia event scheduled for Saturday, February 19th. It’s more covid-proof as it’s a virtual online event that families and children can play at home. Our first ever family online Trivia last year was well received so we are running it again. The cost to participate in our Family Trivia night is $20 per family. Register by contacting [email protected]. The club’s annual Youth Volunteer RecognitionProgramwas revived for 2022. The program started in 2016 to honour and recognize outstanding youth volunteers in our community. After putting it on hold for 2021 due to covid and limited opportunities for youth volunteers, planning is underway to run the program this year. Our annual Oratorical contest for youth in our community is being planned. Last year’s public speaking event was held virtually online. Our preference would be to hold a live in person event but if that’s not possible we will be ready to hold the Oratorical online. Oakridge Optimist dinner teams returned to the kitchen at London’s Ronald McDonald House in August and we were cooking a monthly meal for families staying at the house through December. Covid restrictions cancelled our January dinner at RMH but we hope to be back in the near future. The Oakridge Optimist Club is participating in a city project to bring enhancements to our Oakridge community. Anyone in the neighbourhood can propose ideas for enhancements in Oakridge. A list of proposed ideas will be voted on by residents in February. More information on Oakridge Decides can be

With more than 40 years working as an art instructor, curator, textile artist, print maker and painter, Sharon Barfoot is currently mostly focused on printmaking. “My first passion in the arts was textiles and I am beginning to return to that, however,” says Sharon. “Perhaps, I will be able to find a way to meld the two together in the future.” Sharon’s style is mostly ab- stract expressionism and is in-
fluenced by the rural landscapes where she grew up. She recently moved back to London, to Hyde Park, from South- ampton. “Things have changed considerably since I lived here before. Hyde Park was a rural area and it has grown in to a thriving community. I love that there are so many lovely hiking areas close by and a lovely small park two blocks from me. The area has a good balance of city and county. I love that my area is multicultural. Within one block of my home there are Asian, African, East Indian, and Canadian-born (me). Just imagine that post Covid, this area could have one fabulous block party with uplifting music and dancing!” Out of many career highlights, one that stands out for Sharon are her exhibitions in Pakistan. “I would not say that I have ever been an artist who makes political statements with my work,

but in this case I did. The focus/commentary of these exhibits were against honour killings. Another powerful memory for me was when a past student thanked me for giving her the motivation and courage to move forward with her art career. She said I helped her believe in herself. She has gone on to win many awards for her work.” I know many writers and artists do their best work when experiencing extreme emotions, whether that is extreme sadness or happiness. For me, my best work tends to happen when my emotions are at a low point. That doesn’t necessarily mean I am depressed, but perhaps when some world event has affected me in an intense way. Our ambivalent attitude toward how we ignore environmental issues has initiated a series of paintings is one example. This same issue has birthed ideas for me to re- using textiles artistically, instead of filling the landfill. This incorporates the concept of wabi-sabi. Hyde ParkWelcomes OsteoStrong New in Hyde Park, OsteoStrong is not a gym, diet, supplement, pharmaceutical, or a medical treatment, but offers unique patented machines that improve your overall health by focusing on building bone strenth. Here, Michelle Hunter of OsteoStrong tells us more. What is different about OsteoStrong compared to regular gyms? OsteoStrong isn’t a gym at all! It’s actually quite different! While we do bring members through a series of osteogenic loading machines, it is not a workout in the traditional sense. Members come in once a week in regular clothes, are done in less than 15 minutes, and don’t even break a sweat! What are the main benefits of OsteoStrong? Our machines are designed to build bone density – by allowing members to emulate end-to-end impact force on their skeletal system. Stronger bones can often come along with amazing benefits including more energy, less joint and body pain, better balance, improved posture, increased strength and agility, and reduced HbA1c. And the best part? It’s only once a week, for less than 15 mins! What is BioCharger?
What is most rewarding about your work? Easy! The best part is seeing relief and hope in our members’ eyes who have been in pain for so many years with minimal relief. Many people begin to notice a difference after just one or two sessions! We’ve only been open a month here in London but already people are so excited, and that makes us feel so happy. We offer free “discovery phone calls” to learn more about your health and your physical goals and of course to determine that our machines would be a good fit for you. Cultural Cooking Cranberry White Chocolate Scones by Jess Jones I grew up with my grandmother baking and cooking. She loved to be in the kitchen making everything you can imagine. It was tradition to look forward to her chocolate cakes on your birthday, and I remember when she made me a 3D Carousel cake with horses (before fancy cakes were a thing!) But, it’s my grandmother’s scones that I will never forget. Nanny would make all different kinds; raisin, cranberry, chocolate – it didn’t matter. They were giant scones with a fluffy center, the perfect crumb. Then, we would take fresh butter, slather her scones, and eat as many as we could fit in our bellies! When I decided to go to culinary school in 2007, I was inspired by my Nanny’s love of the kitchen. I wanted to become the family’s matriarch that provided delicious food, serving the people I love most. I graduated fromFanshaweCollege’sCulinaryManagement program in 2009, then realized my passion was with baking, too! I became an executive pastry chef and practised the art of cooking
and baking for 17 years, opening up my little gourmet cake and cookie shop to fuse my love of art with baking and facilitate workshops for others to learn. Today I am sharing my Nanny’s Cranberry White Chocolate Scone recipe, which has been passed down to my mom, who then passed it on to me and now I spend weekends in my kitchen baking with my two daughters sharing the love of baking and eating like I once did when I was their age. Ingredients: 4 cups of flour
¾ cup unsalted butter 5 tsp of baking powder ½ cup sugar ½ tsp salt ½ tsp vanilla 1 cup of milk Two eggs beaten ½ cup white chocolate chips ½ cup dried cranberries Method:
Combine the dry ingredients in a large bowl, mix in butter by pinching between fingers. When the dough has turned into a crumble, add in the remaining ingredients and mix until a soft dough forms. Put the dough onto a floured surface and knead a few times. Roll to ½” thickness and cut out scones with a cutter. Place on a non-stick pan (or one covered with parchment paper). Bake at 400 for 12 minutes. Alternatively, you can wash your scones with an egg wash or milk before baking to give them a golden top. Egg wash: 1 egg plus 2 types of water - mix. Milk Wash: only milk. Jessie Jones, RT is the owner of Jess Jones Recreation Therapy. Learn more at: www.jessjonesrecreationtherapy.com

By the end of November, our 2021 Poppy Donations total reached $55,860.50. An additional $10,600 was donated by the Lambeth Lions. Along with the 300 businesses in west London that provided counter space for 800 poppy boxes, wewould like to especially thank London North Costco for allowing Legion volunteers to staff a table in their lobby for ten days during the heart of the campaign. Again, Costco patrons were very generous, donating just over $13,000 this year. Other major partners included TimHortons, Remark’s Fresh Market, Loblaws Superstore, Walmart, LCBO, Shoppers DrugMart, and The Beer Store. Many thanks for their assistance every year.
