The LGBTQ2SAI+ community has historically faced a lot of adversity in this country. I am happy to be part of a government that recognizes the importance of diversity and inclusion. We continue to rectify the injustices faced by LGBTQ2SAI+ Canadians. Just this past year, we have made two remarkable steps forward in making Canada a more inclusive and safer place. On December 15, 2021, the House of Commons unanimously passed Bill C-4 banning conversion therapy, a practice that has harmed the health of many LGBTQ2SAI+ individuals. In April of this year, Health Canada approved a Canadian Blood Services request to end the blood donation ban for men who engage in intimate relationships with other men. This is a change that not only benefits these men, but anyone in need of life saving medical transfusions. Everyone deserves the right to love whomever they choose. I am looking forward to our continued celebrations in London and beyond as we mark this exciting celebration of LGBTQ2AI+ lives. Give a Breath on June 5th

Lisa Weir was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer in May 2020. “I knew so little when I was diagnosed,” said Lisa, who has since stepped forward to bring awareness of the disease and the need for research to combat it. This year more people will die from lung cancer than colorectal, pancreatic and breast

cancers combined, yet it receives the least amount of funding. There is a 76% survival rate if lung cancer is detected at Stage 1, however 49% of lung cancers aren’t detected until Stage 4. “I did 15 rounds of chemo before progression at London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC),” says Lisa. “I was sent to Princess Margaret in Toronto for a trial as there wasn’t one available here in London. I have been on my targeted therapy for one year. Donations are required to fund local research trials that give lung cancer patients HOPE.” Lisa and her husband Bill, who reside in Oakridge, got involved in the White Ribbon Project (lhsf.donordrive.com/campaign/ Lisa-s-Lungs), creating and sending out more than 400 white ribbons to patients, survivors and caregivers, and raising more than $7000 for LHSC.

On June 5th, Lisa and supporters will participate in a virtual walk titled London Gives A Breath 5k . The walk starts at the Cancer Survivor Park on Riverside Drive, then through Oakridge Acres and returns to the Survivor park. For the birds Studies indicate that we have lost three billion birds in North America over the last 50 years. The main causes of birds’ decline are due to habitat loss and degradation associated with human land use for development and agriculture, declines in insects that birds depend on for food, predation by roaming pet and feral cats, and collisions with windows on buildings. Anyone can help birds that live in and migrate through London by making simple changes. Garden using native species, and don’t remove fallen leaves or yard waste until after the risk of frost passes in spring. Keep pet cats contained or only allow pets outside while wearing a leash. Apply appropriately-spaced visual markers on the outside of windows at home to prevent bird-window collisions. Turn unneeded lights off at night to help reduce light pollution. Avoid using insecticides or rodenticide/rat poison. When visiting natural areas, make sure to follow all of the rules listed on signs at the entrances. Make sure to wash your bird feeders frequently. In May, Bird Friendly London, a local grassroots environmental group, conducted a volunteer workshop at the Museum of Ontario Archeology to apply bird-friendly film to the museum’s windows that face the Medway Valley Heritage Forest. “We are grateful to Brendon Samuels of the London Bird Team and the Bird Friendly London program for organizing this event at the MOA,” said Rhonda Bathurust, Executive Director at MOA. “Feather Friendly film has been proven to reduce window strikes at other buildings across London, so we were excited to welcome

about ten volunteers who dedicated some of their time on this beautiful Saturday to help make the windows at the museum safer for our local bird populations.” Brendon and the Bird Friendly London team thank the Museum for providing volunteers with lunch and to Window Film Systems for sending staff to train and assist with the installation. “This will help birds in the forest recognize the reflective glass windows and avoid crashing into them,” he said. Historic Hyde Park Sunningdale Golf and Country Club

In 1932, J. Gordon Thompson bought a 100-acre farm three miles north of the old London city limits – now within the city at Sunningdale and Wonderland Road. As he gazed across the bend in the Medway Creek to the natural shelf on the far side he in envisioned a perfect par 3. The services of Stanley Thompson, internationally reputed course designer, were enlisted. Sunningdale, a famous course near London, England, suggested the club’s name, and on July 14th, 1934, nine holes were open for play. The Banting Beat by Amaris Peng, Banting Student Council member As we’re approaching the end of the school year, the Broncos have been busy with wonderful school events in addition to academic, athletic, and extracurricular successes! The past few weeks at Banting have been fantastic! With our students having just completed the OSSLT and many of our French Immersion students having written the DELF exam for international french certification. Students have also received their semester 2 midterm report cards, with the end of the school year just in sight! Our Spring sports season is now well underway! The Banting Rowing team just recently competed at their first regatta of the season at Fanshawe Lake, and many of our tennis players have also advanced to their finals. Our baseball, badminton, track & field, and soccer teams have also been doing exceptionally well in their respective games. We can’t wait to see what else our Bronco athletes are going to bring this athletic season! To celebrate April’s poetry month, the Banting Student Library Club hosted a Poetry Slam, where our students enjoyed performing and watching original poems in our Library Learning Commons- turned cafe! Our Bronco Musicians have also been hard at work performing at the Kiwanis Music Festival. The Junior Band and Jazz Bands were awarded Gold Awards, Senior Vocal Class & Concert Choir, a Silver Award, and Senior Band received two Gold Awards. We’re looking forward to hearing more from our talented musicians at our Spring Music Night on May 26th, which will be our first ever music night since the start of the pandemic! Our Reach for the Top teams have also been buzzing away with their trivia skills. Our Senior team won the city finals and our students are now on their way to provincials this weekend. We are also

looking forward to the start of One Run, where our students will be running, biking, walking, or doing activities to total 100km by the end of June to fundraise for Breast Cancer research. Our school goal is $25000 this year. What a wonderful way to end the school year for all of our talented Broncos! Looking forward, the Banting Student Council has planned the upcoming Spring Coffee House on May 24th, which will also be an exciting return of a beloved in-person event! Executive elections for the next school year have also concluded, as our new Bronco leaders begin looking forward to planning another amazing year this fall, as well as welcoming our upcoming grade eight students. While the next generation of Broncos are arriving next year, our class of 22’ we be graduating soon at the end of June. We’re so sad to see these bright students go, but we’re excited to see the amazing things that post-secondary will bring these students!

Optimism for Oakridge in 2022 by Bill Adams

Youth volunteers in the Oakridge area were honoured during National Volunteer Week by the Oakridge Optimist Club. Since its inception in 2016, the annual program has recognized and celebrated the efforts of nearly 100 youth volunteers from schools, churches and community organizations in the Oakridge area. Nine volunteers ranging in age from 12 to 18 years old were honoured at the April 27th event at Innovation Works. They received certificates from the Optimist Club and a donation was made on their behalf to a charity of their choice. City Councillor Steve Lehman brought greetings from the City of London and congratulated the youth for their efforts in our community. He presented certificates from the city to the volunteers on behalf of Mayor Ed Holder. Honourees from the 2020 youth recognition program were also invited to the event as there was not an opportunity to hold an in-person event for them due to Covid-19. The restrictions also forced the Club to cancel the youth volunteer program in 2021. The volunteers and their families received an inspirational message from guest speaker Glen Pearson, the co-founder of the London Food Bank. Pearson knows the importance of volunteers as the food bank has more than 3000 volunteers.

It’s about sacrifice and about making the world a better place.” The pandemic has impacted youth volunteers over the past two years. Co-Chairs Eric Riley and Bruce Pope noted this has made the efforts of the young volunteers even more incredible and awesome. They are an inspiration to us all. ARTISTS ALLEY Joana Popet

Joana Popet first began painting as a form of therapy and self-healing from an unexpected life event. “I never thought in my life before that I would have such an inclination and I was surprised to find out that learning to paint would become my greatest passion and refuge,” she reflects. Joana had the opportunity to be mentored by American artist Ginger Cook. “I became hooked on creating an original diverse portfolio. My love for bold and bright color palettes, admiration of animals, and the influence of pop art and impressionism is found in my paintings. Some of my favourite artists are Vincent Van Gogh, Andy Warhol, Ginger Cook, and Georgia O’Keeffe.” A large part of Joana’s work is dedicated to custom pet portraits and other commissions. “I feel most rewarded for my work on seeing the emotional reaction of people when a portrait of a beloved pet, special place or subject is unveiled.” Joana says she enjoys living in Hyde Park because of the proximity to Springbank Park and Weldon Park in Arva for nature walks. “I also love the fact that there are many small businesses such as restaurants and boutiques in the area which for local shopping. I am particularly fond of the Unger Market and Melo Hair and Beauty Bar, but I am looking forward to further exploring the area to find fantastic local businesses and support the neighborhood!”

Entering the “Twilite” Zone

While the very first drive in movie theatre opened in 1933 in New Jersey (people paid 25 cents per car as well as per person to see the British comedy Wives Beware under the stars) it was the social and economic developments of the 1950s that led to the rise of the drive-in theatre as a popular date- night and family adventure. With the depression and war years behind them, upwardly mobile workers had fought for and won better wages and vacation time, and were buying houses, appliances and cars. The first park-and-shop malls were being built in newly developed suburbs, and there would be 240 drive-in theatres operating in Canada during the era. And so in May 1953, the Twilite Drive-In Theatre, with a capacity for 400 cars, was opened near the intersection of Fanshawe and Hyde Park Road in London, playing Sunny Side of the Street with Frankie Laine. Co-owned by Art Scott of Tillsonburg and Dyer Stanton of Hyde Park, it was known for all-night film showings that like most drive-ins of the time featured mostly B-movies, thrillers and Carry On Gang movies. While the area is commercially developed now, it was mostly farmland then and on occasion, cows from the nearby field would have to be herded off the road to make way for the line of cars heading to the theatre.

The theatre was destroyed by fire in 1991, ironically while the movie Backdraft was playing. Do you remember loading the car up with blankets, pillows and snacks, heading out pre-dusk to get a good parking spot, and hooking the speaker up to your car window? Then just as it started to get dark, people would start honking their horns to call the children in from the playground and to encourage theatre staff to start the film. There are just over 50 drive-in theatres operating in Canada now. Locally, those longing for the nostalgia of watching a drive-in movie under the stars, or just a fun family night out can still go to the Mustang on Wilton Grove Road, to the Starlite in Grand Bend or to the Oxford Drive-in in Woodstock. All three were originally opened in 1950. Cultural Cooking Chicken Souvlaki by Milton Gougoulias, owner AEL FC Canada

Souvlaki is a very popular dish found all over Greece. Souvlaki comes in different varieties, such as pork, chicken or lamb. Chicken souvlaki is easy to prepare and

absolutely mouth watering! Growing up on souvlaki, the family recipe was passed along to me. I like to make Chicken Souvlaki in the summer on the BBQ. Souvlaki goes well with a glass of wine, a cold lager or cold fruit juice! This dish goes well with a fresh salad and tzatziki. Here is my famioy recipe, translated from Greek to English, however there is one key ingredient left out on purpose. It’s a family secret that makes the meat softer and tastier. OPA!!! Ingredients 2 lbs / 1 kg chicken breasts cut into 2 inch / 5cm pieces 4 tbsp / 50 ml olive oil 2 tsp dried oregano Salt to taste Freshly ground black pepper to taste

Instructions Place the chicken pieces in a bowl, season with salt, pepper and oregano and the olive oil over it. Cover the bowl and let the chicken marinate in the refrigerator for two hours. Spear the chicken onto kebab sticks and place over a charcoal grill. Cook for 15-20 minutes, turning frequently.
