The Coldest Night of the Year Mission Services Coldest Night of the Year is a “winterrific family-friendly walk to raise money for local charities serving people experiencing homelessness and poverty challenges”. Participants are encouraged to put together a team, solicit donations and take a 2km – 5km walk during the month of February to support Mission Services London and to increase awareness of the challenges of homelessness. Your Neighbourhood Credit Union (YNCU) participated in this year’s walk on February 26 supporting eleven organizations with over 100 walkers across Ontario. “On a personal level, this walk was vital as it reminds us to be grateful for what we have,” stated Hilary Anderson, Chief Human Resources and Support Services Officer of YNCU. “We don’t appreciate enough what others are experiencing. This walk gave us all a window into what others experience all winter. The proceeds raised in London went to Mission Services London supporting those in our community who are underserved”. “From a professional perspective, to work for an organization that encourages giving back to the community the way YNCU does is remarkable,” Hilary continued. “I’m proud to announce YNCU pledged charitable donations of $2,500 to organizations in each region we participated in the walk and that our staff raised a total of $16,000. YNCU (branches and organization) raised over $44,000 and 441% of our goal.” “I’m proud to announce YNCU pledged charitable donations of $2,500 to organizations in each region we participated in the walk and that our staff raised a total of $16,000 – 160% of our fundraising goal. In total, YNCU (branches and organization) contributed over $44,000 to the Coldest Night of the Year.”

Hilary Anderson and Barry Murphy during the Coldest Night of the Year.

Jennifer Kern, Jamie Sillett, Hilary Anderson Teri Lynn Witherspoon, Tracy Martin, Zenalia Vetere and Nicole Carson gear up for the walk.

Neighbourhood Decision Making 2022 – Shape Your Neighbourhood

On June 9th, you will be able to review all of the wonderful community ideas. You are welcome and encouraged to campaign for your favourite. It could be bee pollinator garden, outdoor workout equipment, an ice rink, community artwork, upgrades to your local park and so much more. There are so many possibilities to improve your neighbourhood through this program and I can not wait to see what great ideas are on the ballot this year! So mark your calendars for June 25th, 2022 and make sure you vote to shape your neighbourhood. Just a reminder that ANY London resident of ANY age can submit ideas and vote so be sure to get your friends, neighbours and family members involved in supporting your favourite ideas. You can find out all the details at: getinvolved.london.ca/ndm

Neighbourhood Decision Making is the City of London’s participa- tory budgeting program that em- powers residents to shape the neighbourhoods they live in.

Funded projects can transform the culture, pulse, and even the physical appearance of neighbourhoods. These projects have the potential to build a stronger sense of community by engaging a diverse range of residents across London’s neighbourhoods. When I first ran for office this program was one of the things that I wanted to bring to the City of London. The program began in 2017 and since then residents have submitted 986 ideas. Over that period residents have cast 54,848 votes and 69 community led projects have been completed. These were your ideas, voted on by you. This year, your ideas can be submitted up until April 29, 2022. After that, our staff will work with those that submitted ideas to determine feasibility and estimated costing.

Getting to the ‘CORE’ of learning “The sole purpose of CORE Tutoring is to provide programming andguidance for students that will directly improveperformance, both academically and often socially/emotionally” explains Karen Rowland, Owner. “When students have the necessary resources and supports, anything is possible.” Core Tutoring offers assistance for elementary and secondary school students. Historic location – modern techniques Located at 1124 Gainsborough Road, in the former Hyde Park School S.S. #17, experienced teachers provide targeted support utilizing the latest techniques and research-proven strategies. “CORETutoring isbuilt on theunderstanding that individual students require individual support to help them reach their full potential. We look at thewhole child to assess his/her strengths andareas of need. The end results show measurable and observable improvements in a small amount of time,” Karen continues. Executive Functioning awareness and support, and programming for English Language Learners are also provided. Strong reading skills are vital for success in all areas. At CORE, essential skills needed to build a solid foundation are explicitly taught and practiced using a structured literacy approach. The Lexia Core5 and PowerUp programs may be used to continue with the practice of these skills at home. Half-day Literacy (and Math) Camps are available in July and August to quickly identify necessary skills and to provide the teaching needed to build strength and demonstrate learning.

Above, Karen Rowland welcomes students and their friends and families to the historic school. Below, a classroom.

Halt the Salt! Just as toomuch salt in your diet can reduce your life expectancy, salt on your vehicle can shorten it’s useful life! Your car’s undercarriage is where road salt and other corrosive chemicals slowly eat away at crucial mechanisms. Chemicals that are easily washed off your car’s exterior become embedded in your shock absorbers, settle on your wheel wells, invade door panels and other cavities and crevices observed only when placing your car on a lift. Statistics indicate that in Ontario and Quebec alone, the use of de-icing salts on roads results in about $3,000,000,000 in vehicle depreciation each year. Long after the snow and slush is gone, salt can still remain on your car, creating the ideal conditions for rust to develop. “Corrosion is worse when spring comes because of moisture that is most common with the warmer weather,” explains Shane Johnson, owner of Krown London Hyde Park. “In addition to regular rust proofing, we recommend using Salt Eliminator , a revolutionary new maintenance product that removes winter salt from the body and interior of your vehicle.” Different than regular car soap, Salt Eliminator was specifically formulated to remove salt at the molecular level. While a Salt Eliminator wash at Krown can halt the salt on your vehicle, aerosol cans are also available to take home for use on your snowblower and other outdoor tools – as well as on your shoes and boots!

Spring Special: receive a free Salt Elminator wash with your rust- proofing. Offer valid at Krown London Hyde Park until April 30, 2022

Krown London Hyde Park is located at 1930 Mallard Road. Call 519-473-0030 to book your appointment to halt the salt.

Left: Marzena Kostrzanowska,Clinical Aesthetician / Certified Laser Technician / Advance Skin Care Therapist / Body Contouring Practitioner Microdermabrasion and other skincare and and aesthetic treatments are available at 1635 Hyde Park Road in the Synergy Centre.

Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive, full scope exfoliation that can be done on the face, neck and whole body to improve the appearance and quality of the skin. “Using a diamond tip, we exfoliate and vacuum the top layer of dead/congested skin, which promotes new skin cell production and allows for better product penetration,” explains Marzena Kostrzanowska of Synergy Aesthetic & Laser. “The vacuum stimulates blood flow, rebuilds collagen and elastin and encourages lymphatic activity. The skin is left feeling smooth and rejuvenated after just one session.” The treatment requires no down time, making it an ideal service for individuals who cannot take time off work for deep chemical peels or laser treatments. “It’s a wonderful pre-treatment for various aesthetic procedures, such as botox and fillers and effective treatment for individuals with mild photoaging, age spots, enlarged pores, congested and oily skin, superficial scars and acne,” continues Marzena. Marzena has been with Synergy Aesthetic & Laser for five years. With over 20 years experience she successfully assists clients in caring for their skin health. Cultural Cooking Paska – Ukrainian Easter Bread Paska is a Ukrainian bread, popular through Eastern European and baked by my grandmother for the Easter holiday. Enjoy: Ingredients 1/2 cup sugar + 1 tsp sugar 1/2 cup luke-warm qater 1 package active dry yeast 1 & 1/2 cups 2%-3% milk 2 & 1/2 cups all-purpose flour + 5 cups all- purpose flour 3 beaten large eggs 1/3 cup melted butter 1 & 1/2 teaspoons salt Directions Scald the milk in a pot. Set aside to cool to a lukewarm temperature. Dissolve 1/2 teaspoon sugar in water and sprinkle yeast over it. Mix and let stand 10 minutes. Combine yeast mixture with scalded milk and 2 & 1/2 cups flour. Beat until smooth. Cover and let rise until light and bubbly. Add the eggs, 1/2 cup of sugar, melted butter, salt and 4 & 1/2 to 5 cups flour to make a dough. It should not be too stiff, but not too loose either. Knead until the dough no longer sticks to your hand and is smooth and satiny (about 7 minutes in a mixer, longer by hand).

instant-read thermometer registers 190 degrees. If necessary, cover the top of the bread with aluminum foil to prevent over-browning. Remove from oven and turn out onto wire rack to cool completely. Serves well with warm butter or ricotta cheese and jam.

Place in a greased bowl, turning to grease all sides. Cover with greased plastic wrap and let rise until doubled. Punch down and let rise again. Reserve 1/3 of the dough for decorating. Shape the rest into a round loaf and place in a 10 to 12 inch greased round pan. Shape the reserved dough into decorations of choice — a cross, swirls, rosettes, braiding, birds, letters, figurines, etc. Cover the pan with greased plastic wrap and let rise until almost doubled. Heat oven to 400 degrees. Brush bread with 1 large egg beaten with 2 tablespoons water. Bake 15 minutes. Reduce temperature to 350 degrees and bake an additional 40 minutes or until an
