Oakridge Secondary School Students Run Relay for Life On June 10, Oakridge Secondary School students remembered those we’ve lost to cancer, and raised donations to help fund research and services for those living with cancer. The students formed teams with creative names like Colon Crusaders, Finding Chemo and Tumour Doomers to fundraise and walk laps together. The top teams were Knock Out Cancer who raised more than $4000, Cure’s Anatomy ($3927) and Tumour Raiders ($3792). Top participant was Trissy Liu who raised more than $1700, followed by Cliona Crilly ($1502) and Jaden Perry ($1306). With 467 participants and 62 teams all from Oakridge Secondary School, the event raised more than $106,000.

Students were rewarded for exceeding their fundraising goal by throwing pies at Principal Mike Phillips (left). At right, Charlotte Bruce with her sister Hilary, a cancer survivor; and the BBQ provided by the Oakridge Optimists. In the Bruce Laing photo below, cancer survivors in yellow shirts, kick off the first lap of the event.

Nearly half of Canadians are expected to be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. But with the endeavours such as the Oakridge Secondary School Relay for Life, the Canadian Cancer Society is funding groundbreaking research and is able to provide a national support system for people with cancer, their caregivers and their families. Community Honours Our London Family

Among events to honour the Afzaal family a year after they were tragically killed in what police describe as an act of hate, was a march on June 5 organized by Youth Coalition Combatting Islamaphobia (YCCI). Attended by 2000 supporters, the march started at Oakridge Secondary School, where Yumnah Afzaal had attented school, and continued to the London Muslim Mosque. A vigil was held June 6 at Hyde Park Road and Carriage, where a memorial was revealed. The memorial includes a painting depicting the seasons and a silhouette of the Afzaal family walking while the hands of people of different races, seemingly doing a puzzle, add pieces to complete the image. Several local high schools also participated in walks. The Afzaal’s were avid gardeners, and the Our London Family Community Garden has been created at Maple Grove Park on Coronation Drive. An exhibition of art at the London Muslim Mosque features pieces by Yumnah, her art teacher and classmates from Oakridge Secondary School, along with works commissioned by White Oaks Mall and Masonville Place Mall and by artist Jan Neville. Neighbour of Note: Rick Kish Artistic director, producer, director, actor, singer, voice and acting teacher/coach and mentor, Rick Kish was thrilled to get back to live performances after a long covid-furlough, bringing Rick Kish & Friends to Michael’s on the Thames and The Crooner’s Show to Port Stanley Festival Theatre in June. Rick Kish & Friends come in various iterations. From piano and singer to an eight piece band, they cover songs from the Great American Songbook and beyond. From Sinatra to Bublé and a whole lot in between, The Crooner Show , created by Kish, takes delighted audiences through a high energy trip down memory lane with 90 minutes of 50s and 60s hits, great stories, Rat Pack-like banter and swingin’ tunes. Rick has been working as an independent music and theatre professional in many capacities since graduating with a BFA from the University of Windsor’s School of Dramatic Art, and receiving his Masters degree from Western University’s Don Wright Faculty of Music in Literature and Performance with a focus in Music Theatre. His long list of awards include Forest City London Music Awards (FCLMA) Jazz Vocalist Nominee 2020, Forest City London Music Awards (FCLMA) Jazz Vocalist 2019 and a number of Brickenden Awards including Outstanding Musical Director for The Secret Garden . But Rick not only shares his talent with audiences on stage. He has taught acting at both Fanshawe College and at Western University’s Continuing Studies and the Don Wright Faculty of Music Master’s Program and offers singing and acting lessons from his home studio in Oakridge Acres.

Rick Kish, Connor Boa, Nevin Campbell, Larry Ernewein and Sandy MacKay’ perform The Crooner show at the Port Stanley Festival Theatre Rick recalls meeting 15 year old Connor Boa while working at a youth mentorship initiative at the Grand Theatre. Connor boldly told Rick that he wanted to be a singer. “Well, sing then!” replied Rick, who was impressed at what he heard. Now Connor swaps stories and songs on stage with Rick as part of The Crooner Show . If you missed the June events – or would like to see more – would like to hire entertainment for your own event (either Rick Kish & Friends or The Crooner Show ) or would like to take technical or performance training, coaching or get industry advice, visit www.rickkish.ca for further information.

London Middlesex Gardens Bloomin’ Tour 2022 London Middlesex Master Gardeners hosted their Bloomin’ Tour on Sunday, June 26. The event consisted of a tour to view six local Master Gardener’s gardens and ask gardening questions of the trained Master Gardeners. Proceeds from ticket sales went to Growing Chefs, a registered charity whose mission is to encourage the community to develop healthy relationships with food. Master Gardener Sarah Ragalyi’s Hyde Park area garden is a collection of favourite plants and colours. Wood-chip pathways lead visitors between both sun and shade beds of perennial flowers, herbs and native species scattered throughout, and a pond with a bubbling waterfall. “We have wonderful neighbours,” said Sarah. “Rather than having us remove a limb from our Pussy Willow that was growing into their property, they cut away part of their fence!” (Top photo page 11). “The garden is always a work in progress,” continues Sarah who designs it to avoid plants that are high maintenance and colours that clash. Sarah enjoys the London Middlesex Master Gardeners monthly meetings where members share advice and ideas. She’s active in the group’s popular [there is a wait list] ‘Seeds to Table’ course that teaches beginner and intermediate gardeners how to grow their own vegetables. The group also stages webinars and library seminars, and each Spring presents ‘Seedy Saturday’ – a garden festival and seed swap. Advice is generously shared on their website. Putting your best foot forward with Synergy Centre “Feet are the windows to our overall health, our bodies foundation,” exclaims Jocelyn Interiano, RPN and Pordortho Nurse at Forest City Foot Care. “Foot care is an important aspect of health care often overlooked. Years of wear and tear, ill fitting shoes and common fungal infections can result in unnecessary discomfort and self- consciousness, but routine foot care can help prevent some serious conditions and maintain quality of life,” she says. Wellness Coaching at Synergy Centre “Integrity stems from the Latin word ‘integer’ which means whole and complete. It requires an inner sense of ‘wholeness’ and consistency of character. When you express yourself in the world with integrity, people will often see it through your actions, words, decisions, methods, and outcomes. When you are ‘whole’ and consistent, there is only one you”, writes Asiah Rogowy RMT DN MA PhD, a Registered Massage Therapist, Doctor of Natural Medicine (Naturopath) and Life Coach with a long list degrees and certifications from the U.S., U.K. and India. Asiah applies the foundations of Naturopathy – treating the whole person with a holistic understanding of human health, the principles of healthy living and preventive health care, and acting in cooperation with the healing power of nature. “For every problem, there is a cause,” she says. “Naturopaths seek, identify and treat the fundamental cause of the illness.” Offering assessment, education and non-invasive treatment options to prevent or control foot problems, the RPNs at Forest City Foot Care Ltd. are skilled at providing relief for thick nails, in-grown nails, callouses, corns, plantar warts, and the poor circulation that may be experienced by immunocompromised and diabetic patients, and those undergoing chemotherapy. They also offer a safe, painless newly-approved photodynamic therapy to treat fungal nails, and diagnosis and custom fitting of compression garments that improve venous and lymphatic flow return through the circulatory system. Just some of the modalities praticed by Asiah include Living Intelligence Matrix, HARMONY Foundations, Living Intelligence Language (herbal, botanical, flower and tree remedies, essential oils and hydrotherapeutic applications to name a few), and Nutritional Allies from Earth and Sea . The Walking the Seasons of the Medicine Path modality teaches the traditional aboriginal understanding that each season contains specific attributes and lessons that can nourish life, body, and mind. “Historically, these understandings were formed when people were intrinsically connected to the Earth and her cycles. Humans were a part of the whole and had a depth of communion with Nature and life that may seem foreign to most people today,” says Asiah. “The seasons of Nature help us to have: balance, healing, peace and joy if we look to the lessons of each season, understand them and apply them to our lives”. Forest City Foot Care offers in-home service as well as appointments at their clinic in the Synergy Centre at 1635 Hyde Park Road. To book, call (519) 318- 5404. ARTISTS ALLEY Ann Pigott

Ann Pigott has painted on and off all her life, but it has only been during the past few years that she focused mostly on the subject of landscapes. “Now that we have such great technology, I can snap photos with my iPhone, then refer to them on my iPad as they become terrific reference materials for my paintings,” she explains. Now that she is retired, Ann enjoys taking road trips throughout Ontario for inspiration and material. “I like to go hiking, and reaching higher altitudes can afford some spectacular views. My favourite view is at the top of the Rock Lake Trail in Algonquin Park. I have created many paintings on this subject matter as a result,” she says.

Page 12 Hyde Park – Oakridge Villager • July-August 2022 “My passion for art lead to a new career, quite late in life,” Ann reflects. “I returned to university to become an art therapist. I was then lucky enough to work with the veterans at Parkwood Hospital for around 17 years. It was an amazing experience as well as a great honour to work with these wonderful residents using several mediums, including wood working. I retired in 2020 and this has allowed me more time to focus on my own art.” You can see some of Ann’s work on the Lambeth Art Asociation (LAA) website at lambethart.com. As the association’s current president as well as a member, Ann encourages you to enjoy the paintings by other LAA artists there, and to follow them on facebook. Ann can also be reached at [email protected]. “A few years ago I hiked, or perhaps I should say mountain climbed, to the top of the Crack in Killarney Provincial Park. It nearly killed me and I wanted to quit, but I was determined to get those photos at the top!” Ann has painted in watercolour, chalk pastel, oil pastel, oil and acrylic. Currently most of her work is created using acrylic on canvas.

All are welcome. The Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service was presented to London Hyde Park Rotarian David Knoppert for his long-time service to International projects in Central America through Commit, Rotary Club of London Hyde Park and Rotary Club of Stratford by District 6330 Foundation Chair Martin Ward. This humble member with proven leadership skills recognizes how very lucky we are to live in a rich country that protects its inhabitants from living conditions that adversely affect their health. Described as a “fundraising guru”, this recipient is interested in improving the quality of life for all the world, both locally and internationally. Congratulations David and the other recipients. Happy 25th Anniversary to the Rotary Club of London Hyde Park. Rotary Club of London Hyde Park Celebrates 25 Years of Service by Barbara Robins The Rotary Club of London Hyde Park celebrated its 25th anniversary a day early on June 2, 2022 at West Haven Golf & Country Club – its meeting place since spring of 1998. To mark that anniversary, past and present members were invited to join for breakfast, share some memories and honour members of the club and community through the presentation of Paul Harris Fellow recognitions and a very special Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service award. The Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) recognition is named for Paul Harris, a lawyer who founded Rotary with three business associates in Chicago in 1905. The award was established in 1957 to recognize another person whose life demonstrates a shared purpose with the objectives and mission of The Rotary Foundation to build world understanding and peace. With gorgeous light streaming through the windows of the club house London Hyde Park Rotarian and self-starter Cindy Benning was surprised and honoured with a Paul Harris Fellow recognition for her contributions to the club over the last year and a half. Fellow London Hyde Park Rotarian Erik Jacobsen, owner of Parkway Garden Centre was also honoured with a Paul Harris Fellow + 1 recognition for his ongoing support of both Rotary and community at large. Rotarians Neil Holt and Henry Vergeer, who have served in various capacities on the board for a number of years, were honoured by President Cherryl with a PHF +5 and a PHF+4 respectively. Friend of London Hyde Park Rotary Diane Knoppert was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow for her work on our wine & food pairing fundraisers over the past few years. The following club members who have donated to The Rotary Foundation were also recognized: David Knoppert PHF+3, Lorna Gunning-Fratschko PHF+2 and Peter Rozeluk PHF+7. From the community, Cathy Wood, Managing Editor and Graphic Artist for the Hyde Park-Oakridge Villager magazine was honoured for her efforts in making the local community a better place in which to live, work and play through highlighting and promoting the work of the various service clubs and groups operating in the Hyde Park-Oakridge area.
