March 2022 Pandemic Update

This March will mark two years since the beginning of the pan- demic that has come to shape all aspects of our lives. Many signs indicate we are emerging from the worst of it, and as Spring arrives, I am hopeful for a return to an easier

way of life for our community. It has been the most challenging years in recent time for many of us and I want to thank everyone for the significant sacrifices we have all had to make. There are also countless stories of how we have looked out for each other through this pandemic so thank you for your kindness can compassion for each other. I would be remiss if I did not once again thank our incredible healthcare workers and all those who have had to serve of the front lines during this pandemic. Thank you for your dedication and service to our community. Climate Emergency Action Plan Consultations On February 8, 2022, a draft community-based Climate Emer- gency Action Plan was presented to Council’s Strategic Priorities and Policy Committee. The proposed Climate Emergency Action Plan is a community-wide plan to achieve three main goals: • Net-zero community greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050 • Improved resilience to climate change impacts • Bring everyone along (e.g., individuals, households, businesses, neighbourhoods) The plan includes ten implementation workplans covering aspects of mitigation and adaptation pertinent to London to help the community transition away from the use of fossil fuels, particularly for buildings and transportation, and to build resiliency to future changes in London’s climate. The workplans are included at the end of the draft Climate Emergency Action Plan. You can review the plan and all of the supporting documentation at: getinvolved.london.ca/climate

ARTISTS ALLEY Tina Rae

Tina Rae first became interested in art as a young child. “I remember making a plasticine picture of a robin in grade one when we read a story by Barbara Reid. I put a lot of effort into it using a straw inserted on an angle to create texture with the feathers. I remember being complimented for my work and the positive experience has stuck with me to this day. Although I have created artwork with varying mediums, it seems that mixed media is my calling. I continue to love creating artwork in unique ways with found objects including, collage, wire, metals and acrylic,” says Tina. Tina has exhibited at the Bohemian Gallery (Paris, ON), the Westland Gallery, For the Love of Art, Paint Ontario, the Wortley Village Gathering on the Green and others, and has lead various paint nights. She became the London ArtBattle Champion on February 19th, 2020 and serves on the London Community Artists board.

In the fall of 2020 Tina released her first book titled D evotions for the Artist at Heart which is a faith based book that encourages readers to connect faith with their art. Tina has lived in the Hyde Park-Oakridge area for ten years. “I enjoy the greenspaces tucked into

our part of the city. I enjoy going for walks at the Sifton bog and on the trails near Canterbury Park where I can enjoy the beauty of the world around me. I have also appreciated the community in this area as I have gotten to know neighbours, friends through the school, and through local businesses.” Tina’s work will be on display at Cherryhill Mall June 11 –

July 16. You can see more of her art at https://ktmmv6.wixsite.com/mysite

Cosmetic Dentistry by Dr. Sbenati

Cosmetic dentistry is aimed at improving the appearance of one’s gums, teeth, and bite. Generally, cosmetic dentistry procedures are based on enhancing dental aesthetics and this may involve the position, colour, shape, alignment, and size of your teeth. The most common types of cosmetic dentistry services and procedures include: Teeth Whitening, Inlays and Onlays, Composite Bonding (or Tooth Bonding). Enamal Shaping, Orthodontic Treatment, Dental Veneers, Invisaline, Dental Implants and Dental Implants. Here is a brief description of some. Learn more at sbenatidentistry.ca/ Teeth Whitening It’s the most basic type of cosmetic dentistry service that a dental office like ours offers. Teeth whitening is also known as teeth bleaching and it can be performed at our dental office or at home. The aim of this dental procedure is to whiten your teeth after they have been visibly darkened from a buildup of stains and/or discoloration. Teeth bleaching (whitening) can help you to achieve a lighter and brighter colour. It’s a basic restorative process that should be done after the removal of tartar, plaque, and other forms of sticky debris. Composite Bonding (or Tooth Bonding) It’s a type of cosmetic dentistry procedure that is done to repair chipped, decayed or discoloured teeth. The dentist uses a material that resembles the colour of your tooth (or teeth) enamel. After the successful application of the composite, the dentist is tasked with perfectly sculpting it (your tooth) into place before using a high-intensity light to cure it. It’s another restorative cosmetic dental procedure that helps to enhance your oral health – and in ensuring that the treated tooth appears as healthy as possible. Note: composite bonding is one of the most expensive cosmetic dentistry procedures. It’s normally done if you have tooth decay, worn-out edges, and cracked teeth. Orthodontic Treatment Do you have crooked teeth that make you way too self- conscious and shy to smile – or have made you lose your self- confidence? Well, you are lucky because this area of dentistry and cosmetic procedures under it cannot only be performed on kids - but also adults. With ortho solutions like Invisalign, you can be well on your way to a perfect and straight smile.

Dental Veneers Veneers are normally thin shells that are made with composite or porcelain. For this procedure, the veneers are customized to cater to the specific needs of the patient. The thin shell is used to fix dental issues such as teeth discoloration, worn-out or chipped teeth and teeth that are slightly crooked. Besides that, the shell can be used to cover the spaces found between teeth. Generally, dentists usually place them by removing around 0.5 millimetres of the enamel on your teeth. The shells are then cemented to the front side of your teeth. This will ultimately lead to a noticeable change in the length, size, and/or colour of each tooth – and a significant improvement in your overall appearance. Dental veneers are quite expensive and that’s predominantly why they have been nicknamed - “Hollywood teeth”. However, we think they are very well worth the investment because of the boost in confidence that they will give anyone who seeks them. Whilst they are normally associated with “Hollywood” stars - and the glitz and glamour that comes with being a Hollywood celeb – they are also great for anyone looking to let their bright smile shine locally (here in London). So, if you want to feel like a movie star today, call us today to setup an appointment to begin your journey to “Hollywood perfect” teeth.

I am a proud member of the Hyde Park Business Improvement Association and have sat on the Board of Management since 2020. The best reward of operating my business is the community involvement. I sponsor youth teams and leagues all over London and Middlesex. I value our membership in the community and believe in youth sports and how they aid in childhooddevelopment. I have also been very charity minded. We have donated to many golf tournaments, Mission Services, The Boys and Girls Club, London and Area Food Bank, and Investing in Children. With the help of our team and clients, we were able to make a $3,000 donation to the Humane Society London & Middlesex, and $2000 to London Health Sciences Foundation. We’ve also been very lucky to be involved with the London Knights! My advice to other local women when opening a business is make a plan and stick with it. Tell others about your plan so you are accountable to it. Know your market and your product. Use your network and grow your network – people buy from others they like, know and trust. Test out the concepts using the Lean Startup Method and see if you need to continue working your “J-O-B” for income while you perfect your business. Meet Kay Habib Skilled Accents skilledaccents.com/contact

Kay Habib is an interior designer by profession and has always been interested in sustainability. “I try and reuse as much as possible in my design projects and doing this inspired me to reuse the fabric samples and remnants from local furniture and drapery stores where I noticed a lot of waste was being created once there was no use for those scraps,” explains Kay. “I started making decorative pillows from the discontinued fabric samples and remnants myself but as I got busier, I felt that I needed to hire someone to make the pillows. Being an immigrant myself, I alway try to help out immigrants to Canada who may be marginalized due to various factors. I came across a lot of women, mostly refugees, who are highly skilled in sewing and I provided them with a sewing machine in their homes to help them earn some money for their household while being home to take care of their families.” Seeing the growth in the women she works with is the most satisfying part of her work for Kay. “They are marginalized primarily due to the language barrier and are considered unemployable a lot of times because of this. Working at Skilled Accents teaches them so many new skills and provides an opportunity to improve their language abilities. We have women who started in very desperate situations and have now been able to go to college or find full time jobs as a result of their experience at Skilled Accents”. Kay says that their decorative pillows and custom slipcovers for bench seats are definitely their best sellers. “We created Wine bottle bags over the holidays and they were a hit as well,” she smiles.

Kay Habib “I love to create whether it is sewing, generating ideas on my business or painting. I love making things with my hands and sewing is definitely something i don't get tired of doing.” Visit skilledaccents.com for more information, including hours that the Skilled Accents showroom is open!

Wellness Coaching at Synergy Centre “ Integrity stems from the Latin word ‘integer’ which means whole and complete. It requires an inner sense of ‘wholeness’ and consistency of character. When you express yourself in the world with integrity, people will often see it through your actions, words, decisions, methods, and outcomes. When you are ‘whole’ and consistent, there is only one you”, writes Asiah Rogowy RMT DN MA PhD, a Registered Massage Therapist, Doctor of Natural Medicine (Naturopath) and Life Coach with a long list degrees and certifications from the U.S., U.K. and India. Asiah applies the foundations of Naturopathy – treating the whole person with a holistic understanding of human health, the principles of healthy living and preventive health care, and acting in cooperation with the healing power of nature. “For every problem, there is a cause,” she says. “Naturopaths seek, identify and treat the fundamental cause of the illness.” Just some of the modalities praticed by Asiah include Living Intelligence Matrix, HARMONY Foundations, Living Intelligence Language (herbal, botanical, flower and tree remedies, essential oils and hydrotherapeutic applications to name a few), and Nutritional Allies from Earth and Sea . The Walking the Seasons of the Medicine Path modality teaches the traditional aboriginal understanding that each season contains specific attributes and lessons that can nourish life, body, and mind. “Historically, these understandings were formed when people were intrinsically connected to the Earth and her cycles. Humans were a part of the whole and had a depth of communion with Nature and life that may seem foreign to most people today,” says Asiah. “The seasons of Nature help us to have: balance, healing, peace and joy if we look to the lessons of each season, understand them and apply them to our lives”.

The Living A Vibrant Life in Our Ecology modality teaches that ecology is far more than the study of life and its environment. “Ecology is the meaning of life. Love of other peoples and species, nature, truth, justice, and equity are the only lasting basis of global ecological sustainability. The key to creating a life that is more vibrant and fulfilling is being able to become conscious and aware of one’s life as it exists now in the present moment. Recognizing and being grateful for the life experience that you have now,” concludes Asiah. For more information on Wellness Coaching with Asiah, visit ww.synergycentre.ca Asiah Rogowy

“Chômeur means someone without a job,” explains Yvette Nadeau. “It's a simple, quick, and not expensive cake to make and s-o-o-o- good”. Legend has it that the pouding was created by factory workers during the Great Depression, who made do with few ingredients, including butter, flour, milk and eggs. The sweet caramel sauce that bathes the simple batter was made from brown sugar. The dessert is considered to be quintessential Québécois cuisine. Yvette, now 82, and originally from Quebec, moved to London with her family when her sons were little, but still refers to her recipe book titled Recipes from Old Time Québec . She kindly translated this recipe from it for readers of the Hyde Park- Oakridge Villager. “I should add that for those who would prefer, a white cake mix can be used. Some people drizzle maple syrup over the cake as well,” says Yvette.
