The creative industry
The energy of the arts South Africa can lay claim to some of the oldest art in the world: the 4,000-year-old cave paintings of the San Bushmen. Today, as the soft power of creativity and culture gets increasing recognition, the creative scene is a fast growing sector with huge potential, while the continent as a whole has the youngest population in the world, a combination creating an exciting and new creative landscape
Estimates show the GDP contribution of the cultural and creative industries was just over R62 billion or 1.7 per cent of the total GDP in 2017. A 2018 South African Cultural Observatory mapping study shows the greater cultural economy employs 6.94 per cent of the national workforce and generates one million jobs. A thriving and growing film industry, South Africa is a leading services destination for blockbuster movie productions in Africa by Disney, Warner Brothers and Sony. It is seeing a boom in the visual arts and big growth in African design. There is enormous potential in the creative sector as the creative industries drive demand and development in technology, with virtual reality, augmented reality, AI and blockchain disrupting production and consumption of creative content.
“We have seen a lot of support and development over the last 15 years; it is a really good time to be part of the industry. SA arts are special because they grew independently during the apartheid era and when SA opened to the world we had a strong independent base on which to grow. We are an emerging economy but with established infrastructure so we are a great gateway to the continent. SA arts are new and exciting for an international audience; the cosmopolitan mix of people and the intersection between international contemporary practice and traditional practice makes it exciting.” Molemo Moiloa, Creative Industry Consultant “There is such an exciting energy in SA at the moment. It’s incredible to see the role of the creative industries in areas like finding sustainable solutions through design. A housing project looking at innovative design for low cost housing models is one of the many projects that comes from the creative spirit and energy that Design INDABA houses and grows nationally and internationally. It’s a fantastic place for events. We can, we have and we will continue to do that.” Annabell Lebethe, CEO Dipthong Museums

Finance and investment
South Africa is one of the largest economies on the African continent, home to 75 per cent of the largest African companies. Finance accounts for approximately 16 per cent of the continent’s GDP. With a growing middle class, an affluent consumer base, an investor-friendly environment allowing 100 per cent foreign ownership and concrete initiatives to develop the economy and attract $100 billion of FDI within five years, it aims to be among the top 50 countries in the World Bank’s Doing Business Report within three years. A new body InvestSA is a one- stop-shop to help investors to start up and run a business. South Africa Investment Conference 2018 The inaugural meeting announced to the world that SA is open for business. With the theme ‘accelerating growth by building partnerships’, the conference reinforced South Africa’s investment profile as a promising emerging market in an increasingly integrated African market. The first meeting generated announcements of investment of over R290 billion from companies in mining, forestry, manufacturing, telecommunications, transport, energy, agro-processing, consumer goods, pharmaceuticals, infrastructure, financial services, energy, ICT and water. A growing market A continental free trade area (AfCFTA) of 1.2 billion in 55 member states is one step closer with the 2018 Kigali Declaration. The free trade area could increase intra-trade by 52 per cent by 2022 (ECA) and creates huge potential for SA exports (currently 30 per cent) into the rest of the continent. Follow the money South Africa offers huge potential for finance and investment, both as a country and as a gateway to the continent

“South Africa has the potential to become the destination platform for economic growth into Africa. South Africa has not reached its full economic potential. We have a harvest of natural resources, we have the two busiest and largest ports in Africa (Durban and Richards Bay). I believe we can achieve consistent growth rates above 5 per cent PA with the right skills sets in our economy. It is quite easy to invest and own real estate in South Africa. Our stakeholders such as the Chambers of Commerce, Regional Trade and Investment offices and various city incubation hubs are also specifically dedicated to assist potential investors to better understand their markets as well as provide continuous research, compliance and market access opportunities that are focused at making the investors experience seamless.” Sastri Ramiah (CA) SA, CGMA, CEO, Olive Convention Centre

At the heart of the nation Ground-breaking medical research at leading learning institutions and world-class hospitals and clinics, and unique expertise developed in response to local challenges, makes South Africa globally important in the healthcare sector Healthcare in SA faces unique challenges. This year WHO declared SA one of the unhealthiest nations in the world and set a target of a 25 per cent reduction in non-communicable heart disease in Africa by 2025. South Africa is home to the world’s largest population of people living with HIV – 17 per cent of the global HIV burden – and it has one of the highest incidence rates of multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis in the world. Consequently the research opportunities are huge and important. It has one of the largest manufacturing facilities for antiretrovirals in the world and is commissioning one of only 12 vaccine plants in the world. SA also has a growing medical tourism market.
Public health
“Other countries can learn a lot from South Africa. In my research in public health, the equal health approach is holistic, working interdisciplinarily to put health at the centre and understanding it in context; this helps reduce healthcare service costs.” Professor Moses Chimbari Research Professor – Public Health, School of Nursing and Public Health, College of Health Sciences, University of KwaZulu-Natal
Equal Health International Association 2020 “This biennial congress will come to Durban in June 2020. Last November we formed the African Chapter of Equal Health and this, together with great support from the NCB, made the Association confident in choosing us as host for the event. We expect 1,500 – 2,000 delegates.”
“We have developed expertise unique to South Africa that is of global interest because of the specific issues we have in obstetrics and gynaecology. Issues include reducing the incidence of HIV through prophylaxis, HIV positive women giving birth to negative babies, cervical cancer, endemic throughout the developing world, and TB which goes together with HIV. We work with many other institutions including the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in London, which has outreach in South Africa, to promote female health. After the success of the FICO 2009 congress in Cape Town, we are bidding for the FICO 2024, which would bring 10,000 delegates from across the world. South Africa is an excellent platform for looking at the problems in the developed and developing world that women suffer from.” Peter de Jong, Consultant Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Chris Barnard Memorial Hospital

Healthcare
Cardiology
“South Africa is unique in the world as we have diseases of both poverty and affluence. The polarised spectrum of heart disease means SA doctors have seen it all and are known the world over. We are now participating in the global knowledge economy and exchange of ideas. We have a lot of innovation, unique ideas and expertise so it would be great for other associations to come here and partner with us.” 20th Annual Congress of the South African Heart Association (SA Heart 2019), Sandton, Johannesburg “In conjunction with the Pan African Society of Cardiology (PASCAR), AfricaPCR, the Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Congress of South Africa (SA-CMR) and the African Heart Network (AHN). The coming together of five major groups is an important milestone for cardiology in Africa. The theme ‘Meeting the Needs for Africa’ is highly relevant in llight of the WHO’s target to reduce the epidemic of cardiovascular disease (CVD) by 25 per cent by 2025. The European Society of Cardiology Global Activities Programme is incorporated in the 2019 congress.” Professor David Jankelow, President SA Heart Association “The Red Cross Hospital is one of only two paediatric hospitals south of the Sahara. Certain procedures, such as cardiac surgery on children, are only carried out in these hospitals so we provide a unique resource. We have a lot of specialist expertise in SA: in RHD, which you don’t see now in the UK or US. We participated in landmark studies like REMEDY and INVICTUS; we discovered one of the genes for sudden cardiac death. The Investigation of the Management of Pericarditis study changed the way we treat pericardial effusions in HIV positive people. So 21 years ago we had the first heart transplant and now we are in the forefront of cardiovascular medicine. We work in a very different economy, a transitioning and developing economy so we see things differently. When we look at the UK and US we are astounded by the waste: in both things one shouldn’t do, and things one should, but don’t. We think about health problems in a way that’s cost-effective, patient-centred and appropriate for the economy and country. So I think we have a lot to teach our neighbours on both sides.” Professor Liesl Zuhlke, Paediatric Cardiologist, Red Cross Hospital, previous president of SA Heart Association
CAPRISA
“CAPRISA is one of the world’s leading research organisations looking at both HIV prevention and treatment of people with TB and HIV. 70 per cent of all HIV is in Africa. A huge programme of international students comes every year to work with our team, collaborate with around 40 countries and host meetings where specialists come to share research and find solutions. The 2000 International AIDS Conference in Durban was a cataclysmic event that galvanised world opinion and changed the course of the HIV epidemic. The world came to Ground Zero and said no to the inequity in treatment of rich and poor. We had around 13,500 delegates. In 2016, the conference returned, with 20,000 delegates, the whole city got on board, the mayor hosted a beach party for 20,000!” Professor Salim Abdool Karim, Director, Centre for AIDS Programme of Research in SA (CAPRISA)
Big pharma
“PharfA has developed a proud history in its first decade. Promoting pharmacological sciences on the African continent and contributing towards health needs has brought international recognition. The introduction of the PharfA Prestigious Lecture at All Africa and World Congresses of Pharmacology will build a proud tradition on our calendar. These foundations present new exciting opportunities for PharfA to cement its strategy towards the next decade. The courage and commitment and the active participation, leadership, and passion of pharmacologists from Africa will advance PharfA and grow pharmacology to find health care solutions through research and training for the future.” Professor Douglas Oliver, Chair: Pharmacology for Africa

ICT
Only connect ICT in South Africa is an exciting, vibrant and growing sector with plans in place for the largest tech hub on the continent Under the National Development Plan, the South African government intends the ICT sector to underpin the development of a dynamic and connected information society, and a vibrant knowledge economy that is inclusive and prosperous, by 2030. Plans include the biggest tech hub in Africa along with a coding and programming academy, plus co-working and co-creation spaces for youths and start-ups are also on the agenda. Government support for tech hubs, accelerators and small businesses offers a soft landing spot for inward investment and companies as well as encouraging innovation and growth in home-grown companies while a huge youth dividend across the whole continent offers enormous potential for growth.
“SA has really embraced tech hubs and accelerators. At the Innovation Hub in Pretoria we help young entrepreneurs initialise, pilot and commercialise ideas. Tech hubs are also being rolled out to townships to enable the economies to grow. E-commerce and smart cities are really developing, helping SA to transition to a knowledge economy. As a growing economy there is a lot of space and opportunity to do business in SA.”
Tsepho Thlaku, Entrepreneur and CEO Pulego Communications
“SA has played a leading role in driving digital solutions for Africa and the world. These include global payment platforms such as Postilion, mobile payment solutions like Mobile Money and Scada solutions for engineering automation like Adroit. A number of South Africans have also been global innovation leaders in this field, including Elon Musk. I’ve participated in and presented at many telecom, fin tech, startup and innovation conferences. These include Africacom, the ITU conference, extensia and Responsible Business conferences. We see rapid growth in the development, rollout and adoption of digital technologies as well as growing levels of investment and revenue. The start-up community is particularly active with South Africa hosting the largest start-up investments in Africa.” 2016 JCI Africa and the Middle East Conference: Junior Chamber International (JCI) South Africa hosted the 2016 JCI Africa and the Middle East Conference in May 2016 at the Sandton Convention Centre with 530 young active citizens and stakeholders from 44 countries. Workshops, official General Assembly meetings, JCI Programs, forums, trainings and fun-filled events made an action-packed programme. JCI South Africa secured 16 partners in the government and private sector to deliver the event and give delegates an everlasting SA experience. Testament to the event’s success is the invitation to bid for the 2021 JCI World Congress, which brings 3,500-8,000 delegates from across the world.
