WHO IS DR. HAZE HERNANDEZ? Getting to Know the PTs of In Motion O.C.

17332 Von Karman Ave. Suite 120 Irvine, CA 92614

I knew from right around my junior year of high school that I wanted to pursue a career as a physical therapist. I grew up playing sports my whole life. Soccer, basketball, tennis — you name it, and I played it. Injury was almost everpresent in my active lifestyle, but I just accepted it as part of being an athlete. I think where my experience differed the most from that of many other young athletes was in my access to a physical therapist. When I visited a physical therapist, I was intrigued by the “up and about” nature of the job. Unlike doctors at a traditional doctor’s office, PTs got to be active as they helped patients heal. Even though I’m not on any sports teams now, I love working with such an active population here in Irvine. Working with athletes of all kinds energizes me because I know I can really help them. I’m familiar with the strain their lifestyle puts on their bodies, and I know how to help treat and prevent injuries. That being said, my perspective on what PTs can do for people has definitely changed. While working with athletes is what got me into physical therapy, giving hope to someone who has endured constant pain is amazing. Usually, they’re satisfied if we can just give them temporary relief, but to give them back an activity they thought they would never do again — that’s really something special. The clientele of In Motion O.C. are incredibly diverse, and so is the variety of injuries that we treat. We see everything, from back pain to run-of-the-mill ankle sprains. Some injuries are more challenging to treat, and some are more interesting to solve than others. I especially enjoy solving knee and ankle injuries. They tend to be more challenging to solve

than other injuries, and they appease the physical therapy nerd within me. It’s like solving a puzzle in a way, and I enjoy building the patient’s confidence in my abilities with every breakthrough.

Every member of the team here has something they specialize in, or a certain injury or type of patient they like working with the most. Working with my team in such an energizing space is definitely what I love about working at In Motion O.C. Our different quirks and skill sets complement one another and push us toward a common goal of helping people heal. them heal, and we have their best interests at heart. I’ll give you honest feedback about your injuries and your progress. Sometimes my honestly comes off very kind, and other times, I strike a more assertive tone. In any case, my goal is still the same: to help you live your life to the fullest and do all the activities you want to do. “Working with my team in such an energizing space is definitely what I love about working at In Motion O.C. Our different quirks and skill sets complement one another and push us toward a common goal of helping people heal.” Ultimately, that’s what I want our clients to understand about our center: We want to help

HIKING WITH YOUR KIDS WATCH THEIR WORLD EXPAND WITH EVERY STEP

Hiking has many benefits as a family activity, such as mental health improvement, strengthening your relationships, and experiencing new sights and discoveries together. It’s also great exercise, and you get plenty of quality time, fresh air, and sunshine. Here are three guidelines to help you and your kids have fun on your next hike. ENCOURAGE THEIR CURIOSITY One of the best ways to have your children learn about the world is letting them explore it. Being there for your children and encouraging them to ask questions about flowers, bugs, or animals you see on the trail will help them expand their vocabulary and learn how things work. When they learn they can explore independently and ask about the world around them, they’re gaining the confidence to teach themselves. BRING ALONG SOME TOOLS OF DISCOVERY Getting your children to engage in nature while you’re out hiking can be as simple as bringing a magnifying glass along with you. Let your kids look at leaves, rocks, insects, or

anything else you might come across on the trail. You can also bring binoculars to help them look at a bird that might be perched a little too high up. Another option is a bug holder to let your kids catch smaller insects, such as grasshoppers or pill bugs, and give them a close-up look. KEEP SAFETY IN MIND While you’re out on the trail, it’s essential to make sure that both you and your family are safe. Wear breathable, noncotton material and sturdy shoes that don’t expose your toes. It’s important to dress according to the weather. For example, if the day is sunny, wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays and apply plenty of sunscreen on any exposed skin. Bring your kids’ favorite snacks and water bottles for everyone to stay hydrated. It’s crucial that you also bring a fully stocked first-aid kit in case someone is injured on the hike. Starting with one of your local hiking trails can be a rewarding way to spend the day with your kids. You can watch their excitement as they expand their world with new discoveries.

WITH DR. ADAM RIVA UPCOMING SEMINAR ON ARTHRITIS

Hello, my name is Dr. Adam Riva, and I am a Sports Medicine Physician at the Orthopedic Specialty Institute in Orange County. Every day, I do everything short of surgery to help my patients heal from their injuries and get back to doing what they love. Some of my specific services include concussion management and various kinds of injections. And while I work in sports medicine, athletes aren’t the only patients I work with — I also work with people from every age group, regardless of background. I do everything I can to help my patients heal, but depending on their injuries, sometimes they’re better off in someone else’s hands. Some of my patients end up needing surgery, though that’s not the case for most of them. Others need extra help

with rehabilitation of the injured area — and that’s where In Motion O.C. has been instrumental. I first learned about In Motion O.C. from my partners at the Orthopedic Specialty Institute, who had previously collaborated with them. In the two years I have practiced Sports Medicine at OSI, I have learned of In Motion O.C.’s incredible facilities, helpful staff, and terrific ownership which have made them an indispensable part of the community. While I had already worked with In Motion O.C., I actually met Jeff Thomas, the owner, through sheer happenstance. When I was at a summer church camp with my family, I spotted someone wearing an In Motion O.C. hat and

shirt. That someone turned out to be Jeff, and meeting him turned into a great opportunity to put a name to a face. I’m excited to continue working with In Motion O.C., and I am also excited to announce that I will be giving a seminar at In Motion O.C. on July 25 at 7 p.m. The seminar will be about how sports medicine can be used to treat arthritis. Food for a Clear Mind

FOOD FOR A CLEAR MIND Can you imagine cooking without alliums, aka garlic, onions, chives, or leeks? In Buddhist temples in Korea, avoiding alliums is something that has been practiced for hundreds of years. Days are filled with prayer, meditation, and meals centered on vegetables and fermented foods — no meat, fish, or alliums. Monks and nuns who live in these temples cook with intention, to keep a clear mind and a healthy body. As one nun explains, “The food creates the entire human being.” WHAT WE CAN LEARN FROM COOKING WITHOUT ALLIUMS and use what’s in season, preserving vegetables and fruits at the end of summer to sustain them through the winter. Soy sauce is traditionally fermented in large jars throughout the year and can be aged for 50 years or more to elicit the deep umami flavor that makes temple cuisine so flavorful. Each meal is intended to be fulfilling and nourishing so residents can focus on their meditation and prayers.

Several different cultures and religions, including Buddhism and Ayurvedic medicine, have traditionally avoided alliums because the pungent properties in them are believed to distract the mind. Those following a low-FODMAP diet (a diet restricting foods not well absorbed by the small intestine) and those suffering from IBS also opt to cut alliums from their diet to improve digestion.

A typical temple meal might include rice, mushroom fritters, fried potatoes, kimchi, fermented radishes, marinated tofu, and crispy greens. Despite missing the ingredients so many of

us rely on for flavor, anyone who’s tried temple food attests to how aromatic and delicious it is. How is this achieved? With fermented foods, carefully aged sauces, and fresh ingredients picked straight from the source. Many temples grow their own food

It may be worth avoiding alliums for a day or two and noting how you feel. Maybe, like the nuns and monks in Korea, you’ll find yourself graced with a clear mind and a happy belly.
