We believe that with privilege comes a duty to engage in partnerships that can benefit others, and across the College pupils and staff voluntarily contribute their time and expertise to a portfolio of partnership and community activities, thereby shaping a legacy of sustained engagement. That we benefit from each of these partnerships is also understood. Our outreach activities have three broad strands: Educational Partnerships; Community Service; and Shared Facilities. This booklet offers you an introduction to Dulwich College’s current outreach work.

Southwark Schools Learning Partnership

Southwark Schools Learning Partnership (SSLP) is a unique collaboration between ten schools - seven from the maintained sector and the three Dulwich Foundation Schools, Dulwich College, JAGS and Alleyn's. The partnership runs a series of projects for students and joint CPD (continuing professional development) for teaching staff and Dulwich College plays a significant part in shaping and delivering this important work.

Through its longstanding contact with the Universidad Católica de Valencia, Dulwich College provided eight Spanish graduate interns to SSLP schools.

For maintained-sector members of SSLP, the College facilitated five applications for Stuart Horne Bursaries and enabled the participation of students in a summer school at CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research) run by the Particle Physics Department at Liverpool University.

In addition to Dr Joe Spence’s role as Co-director with Grainne Grabowski of St Michael’s Catholic College, Dulwich College provides a member of staff who acts as the main link for SSLP. A further five members of staff regularly contribute to SSLP events with additional involvement from a wide pool of staff and students.

A five-month project 'Variations on a Theme' saw the artist and sculptor Peter Randall-Page RA working with Sixth Form Art students from The Charter School and Dulwich College, with a resultant exhibition and evening presentation.

Over the past year Dulwich College hosted: the second Liberty Schools

Conference for Sixth Formers; Drama workshops on ‘How to Write about Theatre’ led by theatre critic Mark Fisher; and Science events.

A Dulwich College collaboration with Dulwich Picture Gallery and My Start/FilmAid International produced an exhibition of works by young refugees in North West Kenya and inaugurated a series of workshops for SSLP students.

Southwark Community Education Council

Southwark Community Education Council (SCEC) is a charitable trust linked through governance to the three independent schools of the Dulwich Foundation and which offers enrichment schemes to around 165 pupils from state primary schools in the Borough of Southwark to enhance learning, curiosity and confidence.

Dulwich College provides, free of charge: an administrator and schools' liaison officer for all three schemes; a fully trained member of staff to oversee the programme every Saturday morning; facilities; equipment; and refreshments. 20 Dulwich College pupils from Year 12 and 13 volunteer as mentors, supporting individual pupils in the classroom, carrying out administrative tasks and supervision, and acting as role models.

On the last day, they leave us with knowledge and social skills that will help them with their transition to senior school…at every session I attended, I saw students’ eyes shining...it makes me very proud to be a part of Saturday School.” Dimitry, Year 13 mentor

At Dulwich College’s ‘Saturday School’ each of the 80 Year 6 students from 12 participating local state primaries receives 36 hours of free enrichment sessions over the autumn and spring terms.

Through Mathematical Problem- Solving, Science, English, Drama and Technology and Media workshops at Dulwich College, students learn essential skills to assist them in making a confident transition to secondary education.

Dulwich College provides financial, administrative and practical support that enables the delivery of the SCEC ‘Saturday School’ schemes. The Deputy Master External and Head of Junior School are trustees of the charity and provide educational advice throughout the year.

City Heights E-ACT Academy

City Heights E-ACT Academy in Tulse Hill, south east London, opened in September 2013 and will reach capacity, including a 200-strong Sixth Form, by 2020. Dulwich College acts as an educational partner to the Academy to provide support for its educational work and to establish links and activities that benefit both schools through shared experience and good practice .

Dulwich College is committed to sharing best practice across education and has employed the expertise and academic input of the Institute of Education (IoE) to pilot a ‘Lesson Study’ project with other STSA schools. This project is led by the IoE, with small groups of teachers working together to plan and teach a ‘showcase’ lesson.

Dulwich College hosts groups of ‘School Direct’ trainee primary teachers on one-day visits from their STSA schools to observe KS3 lessons as ‘secondary experience’ necessary for their training.

Through London Schools for Excellence four teachers from the Gipsy Hill Federation of primary schools have observed Year 7 teaching in the English Department.

Maths, Science and Modern Foreign Languages

25th Camberwell Scouts and Dulwich Explorers, Sport and Wellbeing

Academic departments at Dulwich College are part of a variety of continuing educational partnership programmes.

Modern Foreign Languages Online provision of a range of teaching resources, including 100+ audio-visual aids to support the teaching of German. Through collaboration with the Jules Verne scheme, the Confucius Institute for Business London and the British Council, facilitation of a language teacher for St. Saviour’s and St. Olave’s School and Michael Faraday School, a Chinese teacher for two classes at Kingsdale Foundation School and a Mandarin club at Dulwich Wood Primary School and Arabic teaching for students at The Charter School and Dulwich College respectively. Originate and administer 1,000+ hours of Spanish language oral support for SSLP schools through the placing of PGCE graduates from the Universidad Católica de Valencia. Host of the Chinese Business Day for Year 10 pupils from Kingsdale, Christ’s College, Finchley and Dulwich College. Host of the annual LinguaFest ‘Science in a Modern Language’ for pupils from City Heights, JAGS and Dulwich College.

Sport Dulwich College administers, hosts and provides staff and senior pupils for annual sporting events and activities with the maintained sector including:

Mathematics A five-week series of classes for 15 Year 11 students from the Elmgreen School in Tulse Hill, focusing on improving the understanding of students currently at B grade level (spring and summer 2016). Science Lessons for gifted and talented students in Year 9, 10 and 11 at Bonus Pastor Catholic College, Lewisham. Collaboration with the Ogden Trust Scholarship Scheme to encourage boys to study Physics at Dulwich College in the Sixth Form – the most recent Scholar started his A levels in September 2016. Physics and Chemistry practicals and Biology trips to the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in support of start-up A levels at St. Thomas the Apostle College, Peckham. Provision of INSET training sessions for maintained sector Physics and non- specialist Physics teachers across London. Provision of teachers in support of the educational charity Physics Partners. Twice-termly Physics CPD events at Dulwich with the Institute of Physics. Host of the Lambeth and Southwark Medical Challenge Day (March 2017) for Year 10 and 11 girls and boys who have an interest in possible careers in Medicine (http://mcsprojectsltd.co.uk/?page_id=527). Provision of INSET training sessions for maintained sector linguists at ALL (Association for language Learning) London conferences at SOAS, City of London School and the BFI.

25th Camberwell Scouts and Dulwich Explorers

Dulwich College provides facilities

and staff for the 25th Camberwell Scouts and Dulwich Explorers, comprising 15 Cubs, 75 Scouts and 55 Explorers.

City Heights E-ACT Academy athletics day;

Indoor rowing taster session for Year 4 students of Paxton Primary School;

Southwark Schools athletics days with 700 local students;

Gipsy Hill Foundation athletics days with 1,000 local students from Years 1 to 6; Overload U10 Football Tournament for 22 local schools and an U12 Football Tournament for six local schools; Primary Schools’ swimming gala with 140 pupils from local schools; A PSV Eindhoven coaching day with 50 gifted and talented pupils from 22 schools in Southwark and Lambeth.

Higher Education and Careers

Archives and Drama

Careers team on behalf of students:

Archives Around 20 tours annually for visiting Southwark primary school classes to the James Caird housed in The Laboratory at Dulwich College. Visits by Sixth Form English students at The Charter School for Early English Theatre seminar with hands- on access to the Henslowe-Alleyn papers. Two practical tours on running an archive for the Salvation Army and London Nautical School and ten tours for external bodies, including the Sallskapet Chapter of the Swedish PG Wodehouse Society.

Regular sharing of updates, information and opportunities (e.g. Level 3 Apprenticeship, STEM placements and employer initiatives for career education within the curriculum) with maintained-sector counterparts.

Students:

A level students from The Charter School joined a Dulwich College Digital Networking event, taking advice from the 17 guest professionals. Year 10, 11 and 12 students from The Charter School, Kingsdale, Archbishop Tennison and Pimlico Academy attend the annual Careers and Courses Convention with over 30 universities

Advice and consultation shared with: groups seeking to understand how best to develop their outreach work and links with schools; E2W Enabling Futures to help link with a number of Lambeth and Southwark Schools in their mission to identify and train apprenticeship applicants; Step Forward to help develop the format and timing of paid gap employment and training opportunities; Engage CSR to help inform students of the opportunities in the financial sector for school leavers.

Drama Two major 2016 exhibitions were open to the public during Shakespeare 400: ‘Theatrical Treasures from Dulwich College’ and ‘The St. Omer first Folio’, in collaboration with Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. Participation in the National Theatre's 'New Views' play-writing programme, a scheme that supports collaboration with the maintained sector. Provision of facilities to local schools, including costumes and props to City Heights E-ACT Academy for its production of Bugsy Malone in July 2016. The Director of Drama sits on the Shakespeare’s Globe Council and is Vice-Chair of the Rose Theatre Trust, with the aim of engaging a range of constituents with Dulwich College’s theatrical archive. The Director of Academic Drama is a board member of Young Pleasance, a company that produces work by and for young people at the Edinburgh Festival.

Provision of a hub for after-school training for pupils from The Charter School, Kingsdale and the Harris Girls’ Academy East Dulwich.

Provision of free information for 300 enquiries each year.

An introductory meeting at City Heights E-ACT Academy for future Sixth Formers ahead of shared access to the Dulwich College’s Careers & HE website to provide guidance on the development of City Heights career provision.

Community Service

Pupils’ involvement in Community Service has a considerable profile within Dulwich College and is recognised in the award of community service ties and in the award of College Colours as a requirement of the Dulwich Diploma conferred to pupils in Year 13.

Around 145 students participate in 12 different projects and some 20 staff are involved in supporting student involvement.

Dulwich College organises and hosts other open events throughout the year for the local Dulwich and wider London community, including school pupils and staff.

Every year Dulwich College provides facilities on its campus gratis or at charitable rates. The following are examples from 2016. Dulwich Chamber Choir rehearsals, concert and Victorian Evening; four Dulwich Festival talks; Dulwich Music Festival; Dulwich Air Cadets parade and reception; National Children’s Choir auditions; Dulwich Youth Orchestra; Christmas lunch for the residents of Dulwich polling station; Margaret Evison Foundation Concert; Concordia Chamber Choir events; WAC Arts Away Day; Kent Junior Chess Association; London Cycle Sportive; Charisma Gymnastics Summer Awards; NCCGB auditions; Glow summer party; Your London Publishing book launch; Harrison’s Fund bike ride in aid of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy; a media launch for Antarctic Endurance; and the British Horn Society. Ten services sung by the Dulwich College Chapel Choir and ten Wednesday lunchtime concerts in Christ’s Chapel of God’s Gift, Dulwich Village. Host for 2016’s Visual to Vocal production, a collaboration between musicians from the English Touring Opera, the Dulwich Picture Gallery, elderly members of the local community and pupils from Dulwich College.

Host for the Dulwich Schools’ Debating Competition - 180 students from over 20 schools compete in a full day of debating.

Host for the annual three- day Dulwich Literary Festival that presents a variety of authors and conversations for over 1,350 visitors from the local and wider community.

Organiser of and host for the GE Moore Lecture Series, a series of lectures from experts in their fields spanning music, literature, theology and history.

Twice-termly events from the Science department as a centre for the Institute of Physics.
