Bell Lighting has announced the appointment of Aaron Moffatt as National Sales Manager, Ireland. With over 20 years’ experience in the electrical and lighting industries, Aaron brings with him a wealth of knowledge as well as a track record for delivering projects that exceed the expectations of contractors and wholesale partners alike. He spent the early part of his career at Edmundson New Ireland Sales Manager for Bell Lighting
A €30 million donation to Trinity College Dublin by chairman Eric Kinsella and his wife Barbara of electrical giants Jones Engineering, is believed to be the largest single philanthropic donation from individuals in the history of the State. The donation is to be used for Trinity East, a new €1 billion 5½ acre campus, which is to be based in the docklands area of Dublin. It surpasses the €25 million provided by radiator tycoon Martin Naughton and his family in 2018 towards the establishment of the E3 Institute, which is located on the existing campus. The new institute will serve as a venue for large-scale research programmes in engineering, environment and emerging technologies. Mr Kinsella, an alumnus of Trinity and his wife have already previously provided funding for the Kinsella Hall study facility in Ussher Library, as well as a programme of engineering scholarships for talented students. TESP launchNI electrical training routes
TESP recommended training routes.
A series of recommended training routes have been developed by The
Electrotechnical Skills Partnership (TESP) to provide clear direction on the
right paths to becoming a qualified electrician in Northern Ireland. Hosted on the Electrical Careers website, the routes are designed to educate school leavers and those looking to upskill within the industry.
Recognising that not everyone will be able to secure an apprenticeship place, an alternative route is given for those looking to fund their own skills development, and also those with existing industry experience. “These routes aim to reduce the confusion around electrical training and promote what is valued by employers and will ultimately lead to qualified status,” said
Ruth Devine, Chair of TESP and Managing Director of SJD Electrical. TESP is a not-for-profit Community Interest Company formed by the ECA, JIB, NET, SELECT and Unite the Union. The recommended training routes are available on the Electrical Careers website – visit www.electricalcareers.co.uk/routes to find out more.

RESPONDING TO AN INCREASE IN DEMAND FROM THE SOLAR PV MARKET, ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT GREENTECH CONTINUES TO EXPAND ITS PRODUCT RANGE AND ITS GROWTH ALL OVER IRELAND... Greentech powers on
W ith £1million stock in Northern Ireland held in their Belfast premises Electrical Equipment Greentech is primed and ready to provide next-day delivery throughout the island of Ireland. Since its launch in 2014, Electrical Equipment Greentech has been the leading solar PV provider throughout the NI market and is fast becoming a major player in the ROI sector. A full range of solar PV is stocked at the branch, ensuring that all customer’s sustainable needs are met. With many years’ experience of working with its client base to deliver projects, from small domestic to large commercial, Electrical Equipment Greentech have aligned themselves to world leading renewable manufacturers. Products stocked at Greentech incude Solar panels from JA Solar, Hanwha Q Cells, Inverters from Solaredge and Solis, mounting rail provided from Renusol, with many other leading brand names such as BYD, Pylontech, Puredrive, Rolec and additional accessories including hot water boost systems,
infrared heating and battery storage systems. More recently EV chargers from myenergi have been brought into stock. Commenting on the growing product range, Ian Dornan, Greentech Sales Manager, said, “We are delighted to be partnered with such major brand names like JA Solar and Hanwha Q Cells, highly regarded in the solar world and a global leader in innovation and advanced manufacturing technology. While our newly added myenergi’s EV charging and energy diverter range sits perfectly alongside our existing renewables stock of solar PV and associated products.” Circular charging Myenergi’s zappi is the world’s first solar compatible EV charging device. With optional charging modes to either draw power from the grid, or utilise 100% of self-generated green energy, the pioneering system makes charging an electric car completely circular. A free supporting app allows users to utilise economy charging tariffs, engage the boost system and monitor energy usage. The eddi power diverter from myenergi
uses excess energy generated from domestic solar PV or wind generation systems. Rather than exporting it back to the grid the intelligent eddi diverts it back into the user’s heating systems. Electrical Equipment Greentech also has access to supply heat pumps and other renewable energy products as it aims to become a one-stop-shop for the sector. All products are backed by extended warranties to add reassurance in this relatively young marketplace; so does the expertise supplied by Electrical Equipment Greentech’s crack team of renewable energy experts who have signed off on more than £20m sales across the sector. The team provides full design services including ballasting, wind and snow reports and full on-site reports. Sales are supported by a highly skilled team of install partners with expertise in all product ranges. If you have any questions or pricing enquiries about Electrical Equipment Greentch products

Complementing their detection systems are public address and voice alarms (PAVA), which can be a small “all in one” unit, the EST VES. For larger sites, bespoke systems can be designed using the EST ENT VES modular approach based on each building’s specific requirements. A full design, planning and support service is available to ensure full audibility and intelligibility throughout a single building or multiple buildings, such as airports or travel hubs. With an almost unlimited choice of speakers and microphones, each solution is truly tailored to meet exact site requirements. Carrier also offers a full range, early warning Aspirating Smoke Detection and recently introduced the fire industry to a brand-new concept in ASD. ModuLaser can now be located where it’s needed, reducing pipe runs and therefore installation costs. Detectors and controllers are grouped together on docking stations, which are configured for easy cable connection. Combine this with features such as pluggable connections, flexible “quick fit” pipe adapters and detectors that have dual pipe entry, thus ensuring the shortest pipe runs. Along with highly efficient detection capabilities and some of the industry’s best patented technology to significantly reduce the possibility of unwanted alarms, including Classifire.

PANEL WIRES
CLYNDER CABLES LEAD THE WAY ON LOW SMOKE ZERO HALOGEN PANEL WIRE... Panel wires that save lives
I n a fire situation, Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH) panel wires produce extremely low levels of smoke and toxic fumes with zero acidic gases. This is unlike PVC cables, which can produce larger amounts of smoke and toxic fumes when subjected to fire. This provides increased visibility and reduced air toxicity, leading to faster evacuation of a building and reduced danger from smoke inhalation. Therefore, these cables are often specified for equipment installed in public buildings such as hospitals and schools as well as government and commercial buildings. Clynder Cables’ 2491B / 6701B cables (also known as H05Z-K & H07Z-K under the harmonised codes) are BASEC approved panel wires and considered a suitable LSZH alternative to PVC panel wires. They are also sometimes referred to as LSOH cable or LSHF (Low Smoke Halogen Free) cable. Clynder Cables is an approved supplier
to some of the most prestigious names in the UK and Irish electrical wholesale and distribution industries. Clynder keep a full range of stock from 0.75mm² up to 10mm². These cables are available off- the-shelf in a wide range of colours for next day delivery. Other sizes and non-standard colours can be manufactured to short lead times. Clynder
Cables’ products are all UK-manufactured, colour consistent with uncompromising quality. For instance, there is a common misconception that Low Smoke and Fume (LSF) cables and LSZH cables are one and the same. This is completely incorrect and any confusion between the two could be life-threatening in the event of a fire.
LSZH cables are subject to strict standards; LSF cables have no standards covering them. In consequence, LSF cables have been found to emit HCl levels in excess of 20% when subjected to fire. Always specify LSZH when asking for a Low Smoke Zero Halogen cable. For more details visit: www.clyndercables.co.uk

Fergal Costelloe, Managing Director Trade Electric Group
HISTORY
AS TRADE ELECTRIC GROUP (TEG) CELEBRATES ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR, IRELAND’S ELECTRICAL MAGAZINE LOOKS AT HOW THE GROUP HAS EVOLVED… History of Trade Electric
T he Trade Electric Group (TEG) has come a long way since its beginnings. It now boasts nine branches across Ireland and is a member of the Irish Electrical Buying Group (IEBG). Beginnings in the Treaty County Established in 1971 by Paul Costelloe, TEG can trace its roots back to a vision that its founder had in the late 1960s. Starting out in the electrical business at Stokes & McKiernan’s, where he learned the business, the owner of this once- thriving firm spotted the potential that a young Paul Costelloe had and quickly brought him into the office to work on pricing and many administrative duties. Over several years, Paul began to make a name for himself in the industry and was eventually lured to McMahons on Bedford Row in Limerick to run their electrical department. During this stint, while managing McMahon’s electrical department, Paul began to realise that he could do this on his own. He sounded out a few of his
customers, and many of them told him that they would support him if he went out independently. So, in 1971, Paul made the leap from employee to employer and set up Trade Electric at 9 Lower Gerald Griffin Street in Limerick. A colleague of his in McMahon’s, called Dick Meade, came to work with him, and together they built up a thriving electrical business in Limerick City. In those days, drives to Dublin to collect stock were regular occurrences and stops along the way and back to loyal customers formed part of the routine. While Paul was in Dublin, Dick was back holding fort in the shop looking after all their local customers. After a couple of years, as things began to get busier, they were joined by Paul’s nephew, Pat O’Callaghan. Pat would eventually go on to manage the business in Limerick and after nearly 48 years, is still employed by TEG where he holds the position of Operations Director. 1986 saw Paul purchase the old Newsom’s premises on Lower Gerald Griffin Street in Limerick. He had many sleepless nights worrying about
this purchase, but eventually, he was convinced by his wife, Gabrielle, to go for it. To this day, the business still operates from this premises, and it is now head office of the whole operation. The Marble County 1983 was the first of Paul’s expansion endeavours, with the acquisition of Ormonde Electrical on the Kells Road in Kilkenny. He employed Sam Dunlop to run this business for him, and after a period of growth, Paul bought the site and built the premises from where they currently trade on New Street. After Sam retired, Eoin Moore was hired to take up Sam’s role as branch manager, and he continues in this role today. The Model County In 1993 Paul ventured down to the sunny southeast and opened in Wexford, with Larry Whitty running the business down there for him. Declan O’Toole eventually replaced Larry until his untimely death in 2012. John Corkish then became branch manager in Wexford and is still in that role today.

in Nenagh in Co. Tipperary, and duly opened in August of that year with Trevor Murphy as manager. Trevor had spent the previous few years with TEG in Limerick, and Fergal knew that he was the ideal candidate for the role. Seven years on and the business continues to enjoy year-on-year growth thanks to its loyal customers and hard-working staff. The Dubs Again Over the next couple of years, Fergal identified South Dublin as an area in Dublin that could do with another wholesaler. Stillorgan was the location he favoured, and he waited for the ideal premises to come up. This opportunity arrived in 2016, and in September of that year, TEG opened on the Old Dublin Road in Stillorgan, between the shopping centre and Baumann’s Hardware Store. Stephen McGrane was recruited as branch manager. Together with his young team, they have exceeded expectations within the group by quickly establishing themselves as a serious player in the wholesale electrical industry in Dublin. The Kingdom 2018 brought the devastating passing of IEBG colleague Gerry O’Sullivan who ran TradeKit in Killarney. Initially, Fergal was approached by Gerry’s family to help them with the running of the business, but they then subsequently decided to sell the business and Fergal was asked if he would be interested in purchasing it. TEG acquired TradeKit in December 2019. Tony Moloney was Gerry’s key employee in Killarney, and his continued commitment was crucial if the acquisition was going to be a success. With Tony as branch manager, TEG enjoyed a great first year in Killarney and rebranded to Trade Electric in January 2021. Without a doubt, much of the success of TEG is down to the incredible personnel working in each of the branches. The depth of their product knowledge only equals their dedication and commitment to service. And as for what the next 50 years might look like for TEG, Managing Director Fergal Costelloe is coy about any further expansion plans but says that he will carefully consider it when and if an opportunity arises. He is very proud of what his father started and the opportunity he has been given.
Centred is founder Paul Costelloe in February 2020 at a TEG Manager’s Meeting at ATC.
Eamonn Finn, General Manager/Financial Controller, with his accounts team.
Newcastle West The Millennium seemed to give Paul an injection of further expansion, and he opened up in both Newcastle West and Waterford in the year 2000. Jim O’Connor, who hailed from Kilcolman in Co. Limerick had been working for Paul in the Limerick branch for 13 years before he convinced Paul that there was an opening for a wholesaler out in West Limerick. They opened in a small unit in the Enterprise Centre with Jim as the sole employee. After a move to bigger premises after a few years, they eventually moved into their present 8,000 sq foot premises at the Desmond Business Park in 2016. Jim still runs this business for TEG and is now in his 34th year with the group. The Crystal County The Westgate Business Park was the original location for Trade Electric in Waterford until they moved out to Six- Cross Roads Industrial Estate in Kilbarry. Unit 19 at the back of the industrial estate was a small 3,500 sq foot premises, but it was here that the foundations were laid for further expansion. Tony Doyle was recruited as branch manager, and his arrival signalled the beginning of a continuous period of growth for TEG in Waterford. In 2012, the business moved to the front of the Six-Cross Roads Industrial Estate, and this 11,000 sq foot premises is now their hub in the South East of Ireland.
Changing of the Guard In 2004, Paul’s son Fergal joined the business after qualifying as a chartered accountant, having trained with Deloitte in Dublin. While he had spent many of his summers as a kid helping in the stores in Limerick, he was now coming into the business to succeed Paul if he could prove himself. He spent the next few years learning the tricks of the trade from his father and picking up valuable pieces of advice from the staff and customers along the way. Eventually succeeding his father as Managing Director of TEG, Fergal then himself set out on an expansion trail. In 2008, Fergal was joined in the business by his sister, Eimear, and today she runs the lighting showrooms in Limerick and Kilkenny and undertakes many lighting designs and projects for her clients. The Pale 2011 was a challenging year for the industry. The unfortunate collapse of T O’Reilly Electrical in Dublin allowed TEG to open its first Dublin store in its former premises in Santry, Dublin 9. Three experienced, former T O’Reilly Electrical employees were recruited, and, ten years later, Damian Gore, Aidan Murphy, and Paul Blanch are still there and thriving. The Premier County In 2014, Fergal spotted an opportunity

The IEBG has a membership of 28 branches with strong ties between each. So it was with great sadness in 2018, that they mourned the loss of one of their members, Gerry O’Sullivan, owner of Trade Kit (taken over by Trade Electric in December 2019).
David Nolan, Branch Manager Trade Electric Limerick.
LIMERICKAPPOINTMENT
Trade Electric joined the Irish Electrical Buying Group (IEBG) back in 2006 and has played a pivotal role in the growth of the group. With nine branches currently, Trade Electric has the most outlets in the IEGB. “As a group, we are firmly focused on working very closely with our Strategic Suppliers to offer our customers the widest range possible at the most competitive prices,” says Peter Curran, IEBG Chairman, “and we look forward to getting through this pandemic and kicking on from there”. “We are not actively canvassing for new members at the moment,” says Ken Legros, IEBG Administrator, “although we are always willing to talk to suitable candidates.” Part of the IEBG success story
CHANGES AT THE TOP FOR TRADE ELECTRIC LIMERICK… NewBranchManager
D ave Nolan has taken on the standing employee, Pat O’Callaghan who is stepping into another role within the company. Dave began his electrical wholesale career as a van driver, 20 years ago, steadily moving up the ranks. “My mantle of Trade Electric Limerick Branch Manager, from long- appointment as Branch Manager means a great deal to me,” said Dave. “It truly shows how hard work and drive pays off.” His main priorities and goals are to grow Trade Electric in Limerick further in both sales and customer base. “My aim is to make Trade Electric Limerick the first choice for customers.” Congratulating Dave on his new position, Trade Electric MD, Fergal Costelloe said, “Dave joined us over six years ago and very soon I realised that he had the potential to succeed and move up the ladder in Trade Electric. “Dave has built a reputation for himself within the industry in Limerick for his customer service. No matter how big or small the customers’ needs may be, Dave will always ensure they
get his time. He never stops building relationships and can often be found working late into the evenings to get quotes back to his customers. “This dedication and work ethic is there for everyone to see and for anyone looking to progress in the industry they only need to be around Dave for a short while to see how and why he has progressed.” Commenting on Pat’s move, Fergal said, “Pat is moving to another role in the business where I’ll be able to lean on his experience to help me with certain projects that I may have struggled to give the time to in the past. “In my 17 years with the company, Pat has been a great source of information for me and I have learned an incredible amount about the industry from him. I will always be grateful to him for his support.” “My aim would be to make Trade Electric in Limerick the first choice for customers to go to in Limerick.”

ALL CUSTOMERS ARE TREATED LIKE FAMILY AT TRADE ELECTRIC LIMERICK... Customer first
L aunched in 1971, Trade Electric Limerick has become the last word in customer service in the area, building a strong reputation for dependability and quality over the years. Supplying affordable products that come with the Trade Electric stamp of quality has ensured a loyal customer base, which continues to grow. “We supply only the highest quality products and ensure all our customers benefit from our product knowledge so the right products are selected for each element of their job,” said newly appointed Branch Manager, David Nolan at Trade Electric Limerick. David moved into the position following the promotion of Pat O’Callaghan to Operations Director after 47 years service to the business in Limerick. Membership of the IEBG allows all the branches to pass on savings to customers while an increased network of suppliers means more choice on the shelves. Customers include electrical contractors and professionals from the industry, retail and hospitality sectors. A crucial aspect of getting a contract job done on time is to ensure deliveries arrive
on site in a timely manner. “We know that failure to deliver on time can make or break a project so we usually deliver to site within the first day an order is received,” explained David. At Trade Electric Limerick, service is everything. “Price is obviously very important, but service is definitely up there with it. There’s no point pricing a job if you can’t deliver on it,” said David. While continuing to provide a first class service and an extensive range of products, Trade Electric remains an independent, 100% Irish-owned company. A family business, this is reflected in how each branch looks after all their customers, big or small. For Trade Electric, customers are friends and business partners rather than account numbers on a screen. It’s why they go out of their way to ensure you get the best electrical product for your needs, at the best price and with a “personal touch” service that only a family business can offer. Trade Electric Limerick’s large team of 18 staff members means customers are looked after promptly and efficiently. All members of staff have been trained to an extremely high level and are happy to
assist customers with any query they may have. Trade Electric Limerick also boasts a large retail lighting showroom, which caters for both the public and interior designers and also offers a comprehensive lighting design service.

THRIVING BUSINESS AND CUSTOMER SATISFACTION AT TRADE ELECTRIC KILLARNEY... Perfect combination
I n December 2019, Trade Electric officially took over TradeKit Direct Killarney, which has been supplying high quality electrical and lighting products to the Co Kerry area for over 10 years. Fusing the expertise and knowledge of the existing highly experienced nine-strong staff with Trade Electric’s immense stock holding and nationwide network support has been a winning combination. Describing the changeover to Trade Electric as “seamless” Tony Moloney, Branch Manager for Killarney was delighted at how well staff and customers had embraced it.” Trade Electric Killarney is dedicated to providing its customers with the best experience possible, while ensuring its product range continues to include the newest and most innovative products. “There is fantastic commitment from my staff and a willingness to help the customer in every way possible,” said Tony. A huge range of supplies and equipment is available to electrical contractors, industry, hotels and the general public.
The product range includes major brand names such as Hager, MK, Click, Ansell, Tergal, Lumeno, Draka and Garo. The Garo range of car chargers has been a fairly recent addition to the stock list, which is proving very popular thanks to the demand created as more car owners switch to electric cars. Another strong performer currently is the ATC outdoor heating range thanks to the opening up of hospitality and the need to heat outdoor dining areas. A vibrant trade counter business is backed up by a delivery service that’s willing to go the extra mile to ensure customer satisfaction. “We deliver all over the Munster region,” said Tony, “the van is constantly on the road and the customers appreciate being able to rely on that prompt service.” Despite the extended lockdowns, business has been brisk at Trade Electric Killarney during the past 18 months. “Our new lighting showroom has been a tremendous success and has definitely added extra value for us,” added Tony. As the ‘newest branch on the block’, the team at Killarney are proud to join a
well-established native operation. “It’s great to be part of the Trade Electric Group,” said Tony. “It is such a high- profile family business in the electrical wholesale industry and 100% Irish- owned.” TRADE ELECTRIC KILLARNEY Ballycasheen Road, Killarney, Co Kerry T: +353 (0)64 6625340 E: [email protected] www.trade-electric.ie

PROUD TO BE PART OF A 100% IRISH-OWNED COMPANY... Servicewith a personal touch
T he ability to remain competitive while also delivering great customer service is a huge advantage to any company and is very much evident at the Kilkenny Trade Electric branch. “We are a very well established branch,” said Branch Manager, Eoin Moore, “and our success comes down to a number of factors such as our large and varied product range, town centre location and great delivery service. Our product range features all the leading industry brands, and offers top quality at exceptional value for money. “But without a doubt, it’s our team of highly experienced staff members on the trade counter that makes the biggest difference. We are on first name terms with our customers and take the time to assist each one to ensure they leave with the right product for the job.” The branch’s large product inventory backs up that ability, but should there be an item not in stock the team are quick to source and deliver it as soon as possible. Trade Electric Group is a family
business and this is reflected in how they care for each and every customer who comes through the door, big or small. It’s that “personal touch” service that only a family business can offer. A large lighting showroom attached to the trade counter has also resulted in increased retail footfall and a much more attractive offering for all customers, whether they be electrical contractors, builders or the general public. All six members of staff undergo ongoing comprehensive training on products stocked at the branch and so are well-equipped to deal with even the most complicated customer request. Customer service is high on the agenda, with every effort made to ensure all queries are answered satisfactorily. Widely recognised as one of the country’s leading electrical and lighting distributors, Trade Electric offers high quality electrical and lighting products and services throughout the Mid West and South East of Ireland. While continuing to provide a first class service and an extensive range of products, Trade Electric remains an independent company.
A 15-year veteran at the Kilkenny branch, Eoin is proud to belong to the Trade Electric Group family. He said, “It’s great to be a part of a successful, Irish-owned business. A company that is so well regarded within our industry.”
