The Sun Is Completely Insufferable
FIGHT THE HEAT!
any of the enjoyment I got from being outside. Now with every year that goes by, starting from about five years ago, it just feels as though it gets hotter and hotter. I’ve found that the heat is really annoying and threatens to impose on what I enjoy doing outdoors, but I don’t let it stop me, and you shouldn’t either. One of the best ways to prevent the sun from affecting you too dramatically is to stay hydrated. Drinking water is a great way to avoid dehydration, which, if left untreated, can become disastrous. If you’re planning on being outside for an extended amount of time, make sure that everyone has plenty of water to drink. Carry around a refillable water bottle, which can keep your water colder for longer. Keep in mind that when you’re outside enjoying any activities, it’s not a good idea to stand in direct sunlight for too long. Limit your time in the sun by ensuring that there’s someplace to sit and relax in a shaded area. Avoid going out in the heat of the day too — if you have something you want to do outside, do it in the evening or morning when the day is just starting to heat up or cool down. It’s also important to cover up with light clothing, sunglasses, and sunscreen. and sun don’t mix — there can be a lot of consequences for drinking in warmer weather. Barbecues, pool parties, or bonfires can be an ideal place for adults to relax and have a cold one. Keeping an eye on how much alcohol you consume is a good idea in any situation but is crucial in this type of situation. Alcohol lowers proper body function, Another critical factor is to limit alcohol consumption if you’re planning to spend a day outside. Alcohol
I never remembered the heat getting to me as bad as it has been recently. This summer has been unbearably hot for me, and it got me thinking about what might cause it to affect me so much. I remember, as little as four or five years ago, I had no issues with the heat, but I’m guessing it might be old age taking its course. I wasn’t unaware of the temperature outside. I definitely noticed it, and it definitely bothered me, but I was always pretty distracted by whatever I was doing to be affected by it. Going to the beach, a pool, or enjoying a round of golf have proven to be great ways to forget the blazing sun above and make it more than bearable. “I’ve found that the heat is really annoying and threatens to impose
affecting the way your body regulates its temperature and causing higher risk of heat stroke or dehydration. It’s also not a good idea to have too much alcohol when you’re around a body of water — you might not have the coordination to pull yourself out of the water if you fall in. The heat is really wearing down on me this year, and knowing how to beat the heat in these dog days of summer will hopefully help you and I get through it. Don’t stop chasing the sun!
on what I enjoy doing outdoors, but I don’t let it stop me, and you shouldn’t either.”
The heat was hard to ignore, even when it didn’t used to affect me like it does now. Before, I was aware of how hot it was, but it didn’t compromise

3 Ways to Mentally Prepare Your Kids
FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR
Your kids may find that last year’s schedule doesn’t work for them this year. Emphasize that this is okay; part of growing up is learning how and when you work most effectively. Don’t be afraid to help them switch things up as the school year progresses. ASK YOUR KIDS HOW THEY FEEL Maybe your kids are excited about the school year. Maybe they are anxious, or perhaps they’re just disappointed to see summer vacation come to an end. Starting a dialogue about the aspects of school your kids are looking forward to and those they’re dreading can help you dispel myths and identify problem areas. More than anything else, this can help your kids feel at ease about the coming year.
DISCIPLINE To put a stop to the behavior, you’ll first need to change any of your behavior that’s reinforcing it. Any attention your dog gets when he’s barking — even yelling, “Rover, stop!” — teaches him to keep going, because you’re rewarding him with attention. Wait until your dog has stopped barking to give him any sort of attention, including looking at them. “To be successful with this method, you must wait as long as it takes for him to stop barking,” advises the Humane Society. AFFECTION Of course, your dog needs love and attention to thrive — a lack of it could contribute to barking behavior. Reinforce silence by giving your dog a treat and an encouraging pat when she demonstrates good behavior, like not barking. “Our pups want to work for our attention,” Cesar Millan reminds us. to properly adjust to a new sleep-wake cycle. So why not give your kids a head start and ensure they begin the school year bright-eyed and bushy-tailed? OUTLINE A HOMEWORK SCHEDULE Resuming a homework regimen can be a difficult transition for some kids. Late summer, when they don’t have assignments to worry about yet, can be a great opportunity to help them prepare a study schedule. Ask the following questions to help them get started: “Do you want to dive right into homework when you get home? Do you need to accommodate for a sport or extracurricular activity? Do you work best when doing your assignments in one large chunk, or would you prefer taking breaks in between assignments?”
Your whole family adores your dog — but not the barking. This issue can lead to feelings of frustration, and the more frustrated you get, the more your dog barks. It’s their only way of communicating, and they’re telling you, “My needs are not being met.” As Cesar Millan, the original “dog whisperer,” explains, “A barking dog needs exercise, discipline, and affection, in that order.” energy. According to the humane society, “A tired dog is a good dog and one who is less likely to bark from boredom or frustration.” If you already take your pup on a morning walk, try adding in an evening walk. You could add it to your child’s chore list and help get out some of the kid’s pent-up energy, too. It may also be beneficial to practice obedience exercises and games that challenge your dog. EXERCISE Part of the barking issue may be due to pent-up It may not feel like it yet, but summer is coming to a close, and summer break is ending along with it. Soon, the kids will be back to early morning breakfasts before the school bus arrives and late- night study sessions. Thankfully, there are some steps your family can take during these closing weeks of summer to ensure your kids hit the ground running this school year. SET AN EARLY BEDTIME For many kids, summer schedules are flexible. They may have become accustomed to sleeping in and staying up late without any obligations. Getting back into the rhythm of the school year can take some getting used to. In fact, according to psychologist Cherie Valeithian, it can take upward of two weeks

Have You Played the Oldest Games in the World?
GAME NIGHT GOES (REALLY) RETRO The Oldest Games You Can Play Today
GO Originating in China around the 5th century B.C., Go — or “weiqi,” as it’s called in China — focuses on the virtues of balance, discipline, and focus. Two players go head-to-head, placing their pieces on the board to claim as much territory as possible while simultaneously capturing their opponent’s pieces. Go is likely the oldest board game still being played today, with an estimated 40 million players worldwide. Though the rules are simple, the strategies take a lifetime to master. These are a just a few games that people have been playing around the world for centuries. If you’re ready to add something new to family game night, try something old instead!
the board, and evil vices, represented by snakes, would drag pieces back down. The phrase “Back to square one” is believed to have originated from this game. Snakes and Ladders made its way to England before being brought over to the United States, where it was introduced as “Chutes and Ladders” by none other than Milton Bradley in 1943. BACKGAMMON A blend of luck and strategy, backgammon originated in the Middle East around 5,000 years ago. Possibly an evolution of the ancient Mesopotamian game, the Royal Game of Ur, backgammon has players take turns rolling the dice to move their pieces off the board while trying to outsmart their opponent. Backgammon grew in popularity, spreading from the Middle East to the rest of the ancient world, and is still played by many today.
People love to play games. When you play Angry Birds while waiting in line at the grocery store, you are actually participating in a long history of gaming that dates back to the earliest civilizations.Through the discovery of ancient game boards, archaeologists learned that the ancient Egyptians played a game called Senet in 3500 B.C.The rules were lost to time, but fortunately, there are plenty of other ancient games we still have the rules for! SNAKES AND LADDERS Sometime during the 2nd century A.D., people in India started playing a board game associated with aspects of traditional Hindu philosophy — namely, the contrast between karma (destiny) and kama (desire).A dice was rolled to navigate a game board where good virtues, represented by ladders, allowed players to move up on
