to the humane society, and that’s where we first found Maya. We adored Maya, and she was one of the most gorgeous dogs I had ever seen. She had this deep, black fur with a brindle (similar to tiger stripes) pattern. She had a lot of love to give. But Maya also had a lot of stress and fear. When she snapped, it was like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. One second she was fine, showing no signs of fear, and the
After grieving Maya, I’m happy to report our family spent 12 great years with a pug named Bella. She was a stout girl, weighing 25 pounds without much fat on her, but she was the happiest little dog you could ever meet. Bella was the comfort we needed after losing Maya, and she was there for many of our big moments. We adopted Bella when we were living in our first house and didn’t have kids, and by the time she passed in 2020, we were in our forever home with kids.
THERE ARE NO BAD DOGS
After Bella, we quickly found Weston. (The pandemic made it very difficult to adopt a dog!) Pulling from the training techniques
Recently, my wife returned with great news from the first lesson our dog Weston had with a trainer: The trainer said he had never seen a dog who hadn’t been to a formal A STORY OF TAKING RESPONSIBILITY AND RAISING HEALTHY PETS
next, she snapped. She wasn’t trying to be a bad dog. In fact, we like to say there are no bad dogs — just bad owners. Someone conditioned Maya to act this way, and it was up to us, as the new owners who loved her, to change our approach and correct it.

trainer behave so well. It was pretty emotional for my wife and me. Years prior, we had to make a very difficult yet very responsible decision — one that in this particular moment we felt validated for making.
We enrolled in local training classes and paid expensive, experienced professionals to help us with Maya. We hoped the training would give us the confidence and tools we needed to help Maya, but after many, many hours of training, a few incidents with family,
almost immediately. He’s now 100 pounds, so we needed him to learn manners, like walk on leash and not jump on people who walk through the door. It was reassuring to hear from our trainer that what we have been doing is working. We both thought of Maya in that moment; Weston’s success reminded us that we did all we could. February is Responsible Pet Owners Month, and I hope our story helps you appreciate that great pet owners make tough decisions and put in the work to raise healthy, happy pets. Adopting a dog isn’t as simple as picking one out and loving it. It takes work and training to give your pet the best possible care they can get.
My wife and I have always been “dog people.” I’ve had dogs since I was born; I can’t remember a time in my life when I didn’t have a dog! Because of some severe allergies, dogs are the only pets I can have, but my wife grew up with all kinds of pets. She’s the definition of an animal lover — to the point where she took a chipmunk Weston “discovered” the other day to the vet to see if they could help the poor creature.
and consulting with our veterinarian, we determined that the best way to protect Maya was to put her down. I don’t tell this story easily. In fact, my wife and I have wrestled with this decision for years after having to do so. We know it was the right decision, and the experts we confided in helped us reach that point. But it’s never easy saying goodbye to a pet, no matter how right the decision to do so is, and to this day, we miss Maya.
So, when we first got married, it was only natural that we would get a dog. We went

What’s better than baking with your little ones? If you are short on time, you can find premade dough, usually with a Valentine’s Day theme. Or, you can try out your skills with heart-shaped cookie cutters and sprinkles. It can get messy, but it’s certainly worth it!

GYM ROT NO MORE! 3 Tips for Better-Smelling Workout Clothes
Staying active is an investment — both in yourself and in what you spend on clothes. Finding the right gear can be imperative in growing your “gains.” But nothing is more frustrating than watching an expensive pair of leggings disintegrate before your eyes! However, this is totally preventable. Increase the longevity of your workout clothes and protect your fitness investment with these pro tips. That foul smell? It might be soap. If your workout clothes never smell quite right, you may be storing and washing them all wrong. When sweat soaks in, bacteria can linger. A simple wash can remove this smell, but if you bundle up your workout clothes after you use them, you may be trapping the bacteria in dark spaces, where it will thrive. Let your clothes air out after use to allow as much of the sweat to dissipate as possible. If your clothes still stink after washing, this may be a sign that you’re using too
much soap. When it comes to detergent, remember that a little goes a long way. Don’t use fabric softener. This one might hurt, but fabric softener is actually a killer on your clothes — specifically workout items. Fabric softener applies a thin layer to “soften” clothes, but this layer diminishes the integrity of exercise clothing, limiting its ability to “breathe” as you wear it. If you use fabric softener on your exercise clothes, you may notice diminished quality quicker than normal. Trust the pros — plus a trick to help! When it comes to washing more delicate items, like your workout clothes, it’s always best to trust the pros (including our “wash, dry, and fold” service at Janet Davis Cleaners). But if you need at-home help for an immediate stink, try this: Mix a dollop of detergent made for sports equipment with detergent and a small amount of vinegar. Dilute the mixture with warm water. Soak the clothes in this
mixture, following the directions on the detergent package, and wash immediately afterward. Do this at your own risk, but it may be the quick fix you need! If you have questions about our services for exercise clothes, please contact our team!

3 OUTSIDE DATE NIGHT IDEAS You, Me, and the Great Outdoors
HIT UP A DRIVE-IN MOVIE.
Did your significant other leave it up to you to come up with a romantic date idea this Valentine’s Day? Luckily for you, there are tons of date activities that are easy and affordable for you to enjoy with Mother Nature.
romantic picnic with the sky in view. Or you can embrace the scenery with your other half and create memories you both will never forget.
If you’re looking for a way to be extra comfy while still sitting outside, a drive-in movie is the best destination! The best part about a drive-in is that you can view both new and old movies as well as bring your own snacks and drinks. If the weather permits and if you have a truck, you can load the bed with blankets and pillows and have a cozy night while watching a movie. These date night ideas are perfect for Valentine’s Day, but they don’t have to be limited to just the holiday! You can also consider these for any date that you have with your significant other. Nothing brings couples closer like being together with nature.
GO STARGAZING.
While the possibilities are endless outside, here are three popular outdoor date ideas!
If you live in the city, stargazing is a good chance to escape for the night and get
away from the light pollution in the city. If you already live in a location where you can easily see the stars, take advantage of the peaceful privacy with your loved one. Maybe you’ll spot a shooting star you can wish upon while you’re out there!
WATCH THE SUNSET.
Sunsets are intuitively romantic: The sun paints the sky in calming reds, pinks, and purples, creating a
beautiful backdrop. While watching the sunset, you and your partner can have a
