MAY 2022
IN HONOR OF OUR GO-TO NURSE — MY SISTER!
recovering from major cardiac events. Today, she’s an assistant nurse manager and a critical care registered nurse. She still THANK YOU, NURSES!
My sister was visiting in March 2020 when news of the COVID-19 pandemic became a bigger concern in the U.S. She then learned the floor of the hospital where she works was being converted into the hospital’s first COVID-19 sector. My sister, who lives in Florida, returned home from that trip to Michigan only to be thrown into a growing, dangerous pandemic. She and millions of other nurses like her haven’t looked back since. I’m not surprised; this kind of determination and dedication is something my sister has done her whole life. When our dad was teaching her how to ride a two-wheel bike, my sister didn’t quit until she got the hang of it. When she went to school at the University of Michigan, she would spend hours in the library rehearsing and studying a concept until she had mastered it. She even used to call my dad at 5 a.m., and they would chat while he drove to work and she walked home from the library to get some sleep before class. She has never worked at anything halfway her entire life. After graduating from Michigan with a cellular and molecular biology degree, my sister then went on to receive her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. No surprise, she was placed directly into the cardiac intensive care unit right out of school. She loved working with patients who were
going so far as traveling back to Michigan as often as she can. I could have never asked for a better aunt for them.
has her hard days, where her team loses a patient despite all their efforts in treatment. And she relishes the good days, when patients respond well and can go home. I’ve always been proud of my younger sister, but until two years ago, I always took it for granted that I had a nurse basically on speed dial! Much like how my grandmother and an aunt (both nurses) were there for the family when I was growing up, my sister has always answered any question my wife and I had about our girls’ health.
As we approach National Nurses Day this May, I can’t help but appreciate my sister a little bit more. She has been a constant stream of support and dedication, and she has acted as a lifeline for our family when we all faced so much uncertainty. I’m proud to say she was one of the first people in line to get vaccinated, and she continues to share her knowledge and expertise with our family to ensure we stay safe. So, this May, I’m extending my sincerest thank-yous to my sister and all the other
nurses who turn toward the disasters, traumas, and medical emergencies and are dedicated to helping in any way they can. Thank you for your commitment — especially these past two years.
It’s par for the course for my sister, the super aunt! Despite the madness she was experiencing at the start of the pandemic, she still found time to send care packages to the girls so they would have something to do at home. She shows up for them in countless ways over and over again, even

Since the 16th century, wreaths have been a staple holiday decor item that people once made from the fallen branches of a Christmas tree. In more recent history, folks travel to the local hardware/home decor store to pick up a wreath for their door during the holiday season. However, it seems as though wreaths are gaining popularity beyond just the winter holidays. Whether it’s to celebrate your favorite sports organization or the changing of the seasons, you can make a wreath to recognize the occasion. From Facebook Marketplace to specialty boutique shops, there are plenty of places to purchase a customizable wreath, but what if you want to make your own? With a certain level of flair and creativity, anyone can create their own wreath. You just need to figure out which material works best as your base. their big days for decades. We take pride in expertly cleaning, steaming, preserving, and restoring bridal gowns of all kinds, allowing our customers to preserve family heirlooms and keep traditions alive. Here’s just a glimpse of what we can do: “Amazing. I was a huge procrastinator when it came to cleaning my wedding gown. We did not take it in until seven months after the wedding. You can tell I had a great time at my wedding by how many stains there were in the dress (including spray tan), not to mention the train had a rip in it from dancing the night away. I thought all hope was lost for restoring this gorgeous dress. Needless to say, Janet Davis saved it. Every stain gone, the rip repaired. Literally looks brand new, back to its original color. Pricey, but 100% worth it.”
sizes and levels of thickness, so you can make almost any design. If you want
your wreath to look dainty, you should use a single-wire frame, but if you want your wreath to look full and bountiful, use a double-wire instead.

GRAPEVINE Grapevine bases are
the best if you want your wreath to look traditional or natural. They’re usually made of entwined bundles of grapevines or twigs to look like they came straight from the earth. Grapevine bases are cost-efficient and are the perfect option for anyone looking to create a classic-looking wreath. STYROFOAM A Styrofoam wreath may not have the elegance of a wire one or the traditional style of the grapevine wreath, but is the perfect option for bold designs. You can get a Styrofoam base at any home decor store and spray-paint it in the color scheme of your final creation. You can then place yarn and other decorations to bring your wreath to life. Since Styrofoam is lightweight, the items you place on the wreath will also need to be lightweight or the wreath will fall apart.
P.S. Is your favorite wedding outfit looking a little drab or sporting stains from last season? We can help with that, too!

2 DIRECTIONS FOR LAUNDRY HOME REMEDIES Vinegar vs. Ammonia
From using lemon juice to cut through grime in the microwave to scrubbing away sticker residue with cooking oil, we all have our tried-and-true secrets for making home life a little easier. Among these time-honored remedies, vinegar and ammonia stand out as a stain-fighting duo, and if you insist on being the hero at home, you can’t go wrong with these solutions.
using ammonia, mix it with cold water to dilute the solution and carefully dab the stain to lift it. Ammonia comes with its own set of rules, too. For starters, never use it on silk or wool clothing. These materials are far too delicate for the strength of ammonia. Also, only use clear ammonia on clothing to avoid potential stains from the ammonia.
But before you try, heed this advice.
WHEN TO USE VINEGAR Launderers have used a simple trick for generations when it comes to vinegar. We’re taught that anything that comes from the ground can be cleaned away using vinegar. So, if you spill coffee on your shirt, vinegar can be a useful agent to lift the stain from the fabric. But be mindful of this. If you stir in cream, sugar, or milk into your coffee, you can’t use vinegar. This will only spread the grease found in the non-ground-grown compounds, like the cream and milk, around the shirt. Instead, use vinegar on small stains sourced by foods from the ground. (Ketchup stains can be removed with vinegar, too, but mustard will need professional help! There is turmeric in mustard, which creates a deep, deep stain.) WHEN TO USE AMMONIA Prepare for something gross. Ammonia is best used on stains produced from the body. Think puke or blood from a scrape. When
What to Never Do: Ammonia and vinegar should never be used together! This can be a toxic combination and fatally damage your clothing items. When used alone and on the right stains, these compounds can provide a quick remedy for small stains, but don’t be the hero. To protect your clothes from laundry disasters and to improve their longevity, trust a dry-cleaning professional to do the job for you. Picking the Perfect Souvenir
PURCHASE A HANDICRAFT. Handicrafts — items created by local artisans — are awesome souvenirs! But make sure you buy
A way to preserve or share a piece of your trip is to bring home a souvenir, but choosing a souvenir isn’t always a stress-free experience. How do you pick the perfect souvenir and not just the first thing you see in a tourist shop? Here are some tips for picking a truly meaningful gift for yourself or your loved ones. WHO ARE YOU BUYING FOR? What are your recipient’s interests, or what do they spend the most time doing? If you’re buying for yourself and enjoy coffee, you might buy a local coffee blend to enjoy from home. However, if your recipient doesn’t enjoy coffee or rarely drinks it, that type of gift might not mean much to them. IS IT LEGAL TO BRING HOME? Whether you’re traveling domestically or internationally, there are many regulations that affect which souvenirs you can bring home. Even if you find the item in a tourist shop, that doesn’t mean it’ll be allowed into the country or even onto the plane. And the TSA does take this seriously. In 2012, two tourists were detained at the U.S. border for trying to bring home chocolate Kinder eggs — a specific kind that are illegal in the U.S. due to the potentially hazardous small toys inside.
where artisans actually sell their own goods, such as an open-air market. Unfortunately, while some popular tourist shops may
sell “locally made goods,” many souvenirs intended for tourists are actually made by cheap manufacturers in other countries. KEEP SOMETHING FROM THE ADVENTURE. Bringing a glass bottle to take home some sand is a popular way of creating your own souvenir from a beach vacation. But you can do this with almost any item! Whether it’s stones, ticket stubs from favorite shows and activities, or a handmade item from a class, make sure to look out for souvenirs that’ll remind you of great memories and experiences.
We hope these tips will help you make the best choice. Bon voyage!
