PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

VICE PRESIDENT Melissa Riegel

Happy NewYear!

TREASURER John S.Wellons

Over the past few weeks, my family and I have spent quite a bit of time enjoying all of the wonderful holiday events and splendor of the Club. Evident by the amplified activity, it seems as though you and your family also took delight in the many seasonal events that we are so lucky to be able to enjoy at our home away from home. The ambiance, food and staff were truly exceptional and as we transition into 2019, I remind you to use and embrace your Club as you have the last several weeks. The vitality of the Club can only be sustained if we continue to play, entertain and enjoy all of its amenities, offerings and social opportunities. The holiday season also serves as a time to reminisce about the year past and 2018 saw moments of both challenge and change. Significant rain reduced the rounds of golf played which in turn also softened the general use of the Club….a trend that was seen across the private club industry in the mid-Atlantic.The transition of long tenured staff, a core strength of the Club, brought some adjustments as we welcomed Michael Shank as the new Director of Golf, embraced the retirement of Dan Pierson, Director of Grounds and hired Jonathan Urbanski to fill Dan’s position come the start of 2019. But in spite of these moments of challenge and change, we were fortunate to maintain a healthy and stable membership roster, oversee a complete renovation of the Pub, and funded an additional $600,000 in capital improvements without incurring debt or assessment. As we close 2018, we do so debt free and optimistic of our goals and objectives for 2019. I would like to wish you all a happy and healthy new year and I look forward to seeing you all around the Club this winter.

A NOTE FROM PHIL

Winter Greetings!

Let me begin the New Year by, once again, thanking those members who so generously contributed to the Employee Christmas Gift Fund. Your appreciation of the yearlong efforts of our staff is greatly appreciated. The Christmas Gift, received by each member of staff, helps to create the positive working environment that is required to maintain a dedicated, loyal staff in a very difficult labor market. Now that we are in January, the Club’s operating schedule shifts into a “winter mode”. Each department has listed the various hours of operation that will be observed. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the schedules so that you are not inconvenienced. Just as last year, we will employ a realistic winter operating schedule that attempts to match our hours of operation

with your desired use. Athletic facilities will remain available seven days a week with full class offerings in Fitness. Golf services will remain closed on Mondays; bag storage and carts will open on Tuesdays with full operations offered Wednesday through Sunday. Clubhouse food and beverage outlets will remain closed Monday andTuesday.Wednesday through Sunday, regular food service will be offered but there will be an adjusted schedule for lunch. OnWednesday,Thursday and Friday, lunch will only be served in the Tavern/Grille. The Hut’s hours will be posted weekly based on activity and need. Confused? Give us a call and we’ll help. There are a couple of other winter topics to deal with as well. With the onset of cold weather, (not to mention those pesky NewYear’s Resolutions), activity in the Fitness Center always increases. Please remember to register your use and sign in your guests. If you are unfamiliar with the correct use of a piece of equipment or are in need of setting up an exercise program, feel free to ask any of our fitness team members for assistance. They are also available for personal or small group training. The other winter topic is the weather. Although we have made it through the holiday season without extreme cold and snow being a factor, our weather guru assures us this will change. When it does, we are fortunate to have an excellent grounds crew who have the responsibility of snow/ice removal. Regardless of how vigilant their efforts, the risk of an icy spot always exists. I urge you to always use caution when walking to and from the Clubhouse. Speaking of the Grounds Crew, after 25 years, the department has a new leader. Jon Urbanski will officially assume his new responsibilities on January 7th. Over the past few months, we have formally thanked Dan Pierson for all his efforts and wished him well as he embarks on his retirement journey. Now, we look forward to officially welcoming Jon back to Wilmington Country Club and are confident he will quickly settle into his new duties and begin our next era of excellence. Transition also happens in other places at this time of year. Effective January 1st, the new Directors and Officers, who were elected in November, assume their responsibilities for 2019.At the Board of Director level, Cameron McDonald has completed his service to your Club. He has been involved in some form of committee or leadership position for fourteen years, the past six as a Director and Officer. That commitment to serving your Club is deserving of appreciation and recognition. As Cameron steps down, others are stepping up. Beginning their service as Directors are Adam Landis, Steve Casey and Jon Saunders. These individuals give willingly of their time and talent for no other reason than to see the Club continue to thrive. It isn’t always easy or fun, but their efforts are crucial for your Club’s success.

That’s all for now. As always, thanks for reading. Let’s have a safe, healthy winter and I’ll see you at the Club!

BOOK CLUB

Note: We have chosen January 8th, the second Tuesday in January, to avoid having a Book Club meeting on NewYear’s Day.

For January 8th, we have chosen Paulette Jiles’ historical novel, News of the World . It is the winter of 1870, and Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd, an elderly widower, former soldier and printer has been traveling around North Texas entertaining grim small paying audiences with live newspaper readings about the troubling times plus tales of the world’s erupting volcanoes and other “distant magic”. He has enjoyed his solitary existence, but his own life seems to be going downhill when he meets ten-year-old Johanna Leonberger who was 6 when a band of Kiowa raiders took her captive after murdering her parents and little sister. In the aftermath, she became Cicada, daughter of Turning Water and Three Spotted, and Kiowa to the soul - until she was traded four years later to an Army agent for blankets and a set of silver dinnerware. Now twice orphaned, she has forgotten the English language and everything about her non-Indian life. The Captain has been offered a $50 gold piece to deliver the young orphan to her aunt and uncle who live outside San Antonio - a wildly hazardous 400-mile journey through unsettled terrain and swollen rivers. Join us at 4:00 pm on the 8th in the Ladies’ Lounge as Francesca DiGuglielmo leads the discussion of this loving, tender historical novel. Our February novel, March , by Geraldine Brooks explores the devastation and moral complexities of the Civil War through her brilliantly imagined tale of Mr. March, the absent father from Louisa May Alcott's LittleWomen. Brooks won the Pulitzer Prize in 2006 for March.

A NOTE FROM GROUNDS

FAREWELL FROM DAN PIERSON Over the past twenty-five years I’ve participated in the writing of around 300, give or take, member newsletter articles. Although I have often times found them challenging in content or in due dates, I’ve always enjoyed the opportunity explaining many of our processes, discussing planned projects, talking about our staff, or, most enjoyably, talking about the history of the club; the traditions and its Delaware Valley environment. In most if not all cases, I have spoken from a third-party outlook as I have always felt that I was speaking as a representative and member of our team. In this, my final article, I break with tradition and speak from the first person prospective as I mean for this communication to be about my feelings for all of you. I want to first thank everyone involved for the wonderful farewell celebration…..my retirement party. It meant so very much to both my wife, Donna, and I.We will always cherish it as being among the nicest things to have happened to us ever. The generosity was more than we know how to express our sincere appreciation for and the parting gifts were totally unexpected. We’d especially like to thank Gary Ferguson, Tom Humphrey, Leigh Johnstone and Phil Iannelli for their very kind words. Representing all of the members of Wilmington Country Club, the appreciation expressed for my efforts, and for Donna’s patient support over the past twenty-five years, was very sincerely felt and thoroughly enjoyed. Thank you to the members and to our friends for sharing in the celebration, and to the wonderful team of staff, for which I am very proud to have been a member, for their efforts in creating a very special day for us. Thinking back to my first year’s experiences here, my warmest memories return to a gracious welcome from a most harmonic, slow southern voice of the club president, Bill Harmen. His frequent council and sound advice were instrumental in surviving the early years. I remember the routine and early morning visits with Harry Anderson as he made his pre- play cart rounds with Reggie and Jackson. Eddie Richitelli was another frequent and favorite face always offering friendly inquiry as to how they were treating me. If I winced a bit, he was quick with a grin followed by “Don’t sweat the small stuff, they’ll get over it”. And of course my most memorable and valued reminiscences are of my first Grounds Chairman, Mr. Brinsfield. From the very beginning, Jay was the pillar upon which I could depend for his honest and constructive criticism, his steadfast support, and his sound, welcome advice. He was also a very loyal and trusted friend. As I prepared to move toWilmington, superintendent friends asked how I could possibly leave the scenic and temperate environs of Colorado to take on the known perdition of growing grass in the Philadelphia region. My answer was “Wait ‘til you come to visit. It really is a great opportunity and it’s in a pretty special place”. And so, after twenty-five years, I will, sometime in the afternoon on NewYear’s Eve, drive up the front drive for the last time knowing that my term of duty has come to a close. I’m quite sure I will reminisce about that first time I turned in, at the then brick pillars, which had some odd-looking tops with iron lettering that I couldn’t immediately translate. As I drove up the drive, my first impression I garnered was ‘what an odd location for a cart path being right next to the fairway’. First impressions being what they are, the further I drove, the more I was impressed by the grandeur of the land itself and by the people I met. By the time I departed by way of the same path, I had clearly decided that this was a place that I could really care about and love to care for. I very sincerely am most grateful, to you, the members, for that opportunity and for the wonderful home thatWilmington Country Club has been for Donna and I. I’d also like to thank all of the past and present WCC staff, the real reason for any success I’ve enjoyed. This really is a special place with special people and I am honored to have played a role in the grand history of Wilmington Country Club.

GOLF

Happy new year! Thank you to everyone who made 2018 a terrific season for golf at Wilmington. Our entire golf team is already hard at work getting ready for the 2019 season. Be on the lookout for several new initiatives this year, including a series of Rules Seminars to inform you on the new Rules of Golf in place for 2019. Be sure to take advantage of one of these complementary events to get up to speed on all of the Rules changes.

With a new year upon us, resolve to play better golf in 2019. All of our PGA Professional Staff, led by PGA Director of Instruction Bob Lennon, is available to work on your swing in the cold weather months so that you will be ready when spring arrives. A great new option for this winter instruction is our recently opened indoor golf studio.

Be aware that hours of operation change over the winter months. Please see the listed hours so that we may properly serve you.

Later this month we will be headed to Orlando for the annual PGA Merchandise Show. Please stop by the Golf Shop to let us know if there is anything you would like to see in the Golf Shop for 2019.

Finally, some big news for our PGA Staff. Our very own DanTaylor, PGA, recently accepted the Head Golf Professional position at Eagles Mere Country Club. This is a tremendous opportunity for Dan at a historic 1911William Flynn golf course in the endless mountains of Pennsylvania. Dan did a terrific job over the past two seasons, especially with engaging over 200 juniors in our junior golf program in 2018. We wish him the very best in his new endeavor!

Michael Shank, PGA Director of Golf

SQUASH

COACHING CORNER A cross court can be your best friend, but also can be your worst enemy. In singles you must play the cross court only when you are balanced and in control of the rally. In addition, your opponent must be in a position of defense, Or over committing. This allows you to make your opponent twist as well as end up in the back of the court. In doubles, cross court shots allow your partner to become more involved as well as help to defend the court.A poor rail can box you out and your partner has to work harder to help defend and cover for you. A good cross court or a good skid boast in doubles can allow you free access to your respective “T” and allow your partner to get in front of his same wall opponent.
