MIYC Book Club Selections 2022 Welcome Back, Book Club Enthusiasts! We have some excellent selections for our 2022 Season. Our first meeting is Thursday, January 27 th , 12:00 noon. Our book selection is Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln , by Doris Kearns Goodwin.
Few people knew more about the benefit of hardships than Abraham Lincoln. At an early age, he endured the loss of family members and suffered a strained relationship with his father. However, these experiences only strengthened Lincoln’s resolve and ambitions. Doris Kearns Goodwin explores the extraordinary array of personal qualities that allowed Lincoln, a prairie lawyer and former one-term congressman and now president, first to appoint, then to win over, men who had previously opposed him, revealing how Lincoln's bold and brilliant actions helped him steer the country through its darkest days. Please join us for an educational and entertaining presentation by Kevin Hennessy and a book-themed luncheon creation by Chef Bob. Our season schedule is as follows: February (24 th ) The Lincoln Highway , by Amor Towles. Deb deVries, presenter. March (31 st ) On the Night of a Blood Moon , by local resident Peter Karl. Peter Karl, presenter. April (28 th ) Empire of Pain , by Patrick Radden Keefe. Kathleen Douglas, presenter. May (26 th ) The Daughters of Yalta , by Catherine Grace Katz. Val Bilbrey, presenter. The Book Club meets the LAST Thursday of each month; 12:00 noon for presentation and lunch/table discussions, followed by dessert and group discussion. Please feel free to invite your friends! M . A . Harlacker

Art Classes on Marco Island Starting in January, 2022, Leslie Shannon, our receptionist Elaine Chisenall’s daughter, will begin teaching art classes in her Beach Street Art Gallery studio on Barfield Avenue across from the ‘Big Publix”. If you are interested in the medium of oil, acrylic, watercolor or textures, Leslie will be there to help you create your masterpiece. There will be step by step instructions to ensure that the student walks away with a beautifully completed piece of
art. The classes will focus on painting techniques and tips that will help the student feel confident to paint anything on their own. There will be accommodation for all levels of experience. Even a seasoned painter will enjoy joining a group and sharing creativity with other creative artists Leslie offers two opportunities. One, where you bring your own supplies and ideas and she guides you through your project. There will also be classes where Leslie selects the painting subject and medium and will provide the canvas and all the supplies to complete the painting.
The classes will be once a week for three hours and extend for three, four or six week sessions continuing until the beginning of April 2022. There will be seven to eight members in each class. Please reach out to discuss scheduling and cost of the classes. Phone 239-235-7084 or email [email protected]
The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Marco Island Power Squadron (now rebranded as America’s Boating Club) offer many excellent classroom and online courses on a variety of boating topics. Currently, there are new classes being offered by the Power Squadron for September 2021 through March 2022. Click on the link below for course information*. Chairman As many individuals do at this time of year, I often reflect on the past twelve months and look forward to the coming year with anticipation and hope. So, I hope you will indulge me a bit of looking back over the past year at our Club and thinking about the coming year. Last January, we saw increase COVID cases in the Naples area and in Marco Island. Although we did not shut down, we did have a reduction in activity around the Club from January through the spring season. As the number of cases dropped, we saw a return to more normal use by members. By fall, we were also seeing banquet business return and we ended 2021 strong! As I write this column, the new Omicron variant is spreading quickly throughout the country. In Florida, cases are increasing but we are not seeing a corresponding increase in hospitalizations. The new variant
Dave Everitt
seems to be less impactful...especially to those that are vaccinated and boosted. The increase in cases associated with the new variant has not yet translated to lower activity level at the Club. However, we continue to be vigilant. Throughout this past year, we have seen increased interest in membership in our Club. We continue to have former members return to the Club. More importantly, we have had many new members join that are either new to the area or have been in the area and have decided to consider membership. It has been exciting to see the new members join the Club and get engaged in activities! The growth in membership levels has caused us to consider establishing membership caps. The Board discussed the subject at the December meeting. Various aspects of the discussion included the impact on member access to the Club and service levels. The Board did decide to implement a wait list for Social Memberships that will go into effect on January 1. I will be sending out a note to the Club with more information on the subject before the end of December. We also completed the Riverside Marina project this past year. The project also included the replacement of the seawall, replacing landscaping and upgrading the Burgee restrooms. With the opening of the Marina in November, we were able to pay off the member financed loan in December. We have received our unrestricted certificate of occupancy and Dockmaster Mike and Port Captain Melanie have welcomed several transients to the marina in November and December. In the coming year, we will be developing a project to upgrade our Clubhouse. I previewed some of the conceptual drawings at our November membership meeting. If you were unable to attend the meeting, you can find the presentation on the MIYC Website. Look for more information on this project throughout the year. Finally, I want to thank all of you who contributed to the employee holiday fund. Your contributions enabled us to make a significant holiday payment to our employees that I know was very much appreciated. Our employees have been working hard throughout the year. Please take a minute to thank them for their support and loyalty to the Club. Dave Everitt

Commodore
Gentle Members,
2022 dawns full of bright promise for all of us who are fortunate enough to be part of the Marco Island Yacht Club. I’d like to say a few words about your 2022 Bridge. Everyone knows that the Bridge holds the traditional Evening Colors ceremony, our visible link to yachting traditions and a cherished opportunity to honor America and our Veterans. But there is more to your Bridge than snappy white suits. You have a Bridge staffed with capable and enthusiastic volunteer officers, with Flag Officers crafting amazing opportunities for all Members to enjoy the yachting life, from Day Cruises to nearby favorite haunts, to Sunset
TomWentworth
and Twilight Cruises where we make new friends and enjoy old ones on the water, to Extended Cruises, foreign and domestic, where we can merge that wonderful feeling of friendship and belonging with the excitement and adventure of travel, all the time seeing a different part of the world through the eyes of our dear friends. Your Bridge also has outstanding, exceptional Staff Officers who are busy all year long working for you. There are two Fleet Captains, the Fleet Captain Power to support you in all things motor boating, and our Fleet Captain Sail, who leads our acclaimed Youth Sailing Programs, inspiring a new generation with leadership and life skills that can only be learned on the water. Your Port Captain is our Ambassador to visiting yachtsmen from reciprocal Yacht Clubs from around the country as they arrive, greeting them with the warmest of smiles, and introducing them to our beautiful Marina and Club. Your Quartermaster makes certain that those reciprocal visitors see their own Club burgee flying proudly on our flagstaff, ensures that protocol is followed, and cares for our National Colors and Club standards. There is so much more to the Quartermaster’s job than the firing of the cannon! Your Safety and Training Officer ensures that every boat involved in a Club activity is inspected and ready, and is a valuable resource for questions about safety, boat handling, navigation, maintenance and more. Your Secretary keeps the records, the minutes, and keeps all Officers in line with procedure and tradition. Your Fleet Surgeon, a Medical Doctor, shares valuable medical advice with Members as it relates to boating, cruising, general health and safety. Your Chaplin is a spiritual mentor, and reminds us all of what we are genuinely thankful for. Your FCYC Director, together with your FCYC Alternate Director, work diligently to represent your Club to the 35 other member clubs of the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs, making sure that all of you, our Members, are made welcome at each of these reciprocating Clubs throughout Florida whenever you would like to visit. As Commodore, I am proud to serve with this large and talented team, dedicated as each one of them are to making your Club experience the very best it can be. We’re all here to help you make unforgettable memories – let’s start tomorrow to make some more together. Tom Wentworth

Member Events
Hello, MIYC Members and Happy New Year! 2021 was a banner year for our Club. We braved through Covid and held events in the fresh air; then we christened the Riverside Marina. As the year ended we have close to 75 new Memberships! As exciting as this is, we now realize that Members have to make their reservations early. Now for 2022, hold on to your hats and get ready for a great ride. Starting in January there is the opening of the Burgee Bar for Season. Then the creme de la crème Commodore’s Ball on January 22. This is a formal event with exciting entertainment that you will not want to miss. The end of January, we will have a dance party…Dancing the Night Away featuring a local popular band, Hat Trick. February will usher in a Valentine’s Day Dinner Dance with Rosetta Stone. Dancing shoes are in order. The Blessing of the Fleet is a special February event that you will not want to miss. Keep an eye out for Bridge notices to give insight on time and appropriate dress. A Signature Event will be held on March 1 - the Mardi Gras! We will pull out all the stops as the Saints Come Marching In. There will be lots of music, beads and boas. MIYC Members, Kathy and Roy Hershberger, who live part time in New Orleans, will bring the authentic touches to this fabulous event. We also have March Madness night with a hoops competition. Then on March 19, the Prom. We can appropriately call it “The Senior Prom”. The music will feature our special songs from the 60s and 70s as well as today. So, find your White Sports Coat and the Pink Carnation. Ladies, you remember how to dress for a prom, right? And, everyone’s favorite, our own Kentucky Derby which we call Hats and Horses. Mark May 7 on your calendar. Now, in addition to Signature Events, and Club events like burgee dances, there are the wonderful dining events like Wine and Dine each month, High Tea, St. Patrick’s Day fare and Oktoberfest specialties. Each month there is a first class Book Club, a Golf Outing, and men’s and women’s Bridge Games. And, of course, sign up for weekly Bridge, Canasta and Mah Jongg games. All, this and Bridge events. Our Member Events Committee works hard to make your events special. If you are interested in joining us, we always welcome new women and men. Reach out to me at [email protected] Keep your event calendars handy and make those reservations. We are heading into a great New Year. Angela Holt

Happy New Year to all! Remember to submit your photos to the roster so we can have everyone with a picture! If we can get 80% of our members with photos in the roster by January 15 th , everyone with a photo in the roster will win a free drink! If we do not get to 80% then those members with photos in the alphabetical group with the highest percentage of pictures by January 15 th will receive a ticket for a free drink! It does not sound like much but it sure is a fantastic way to meet members! Have some fun with it. The alphabetic groupings are A – C D – I J – M N – R S – Z. So, find any members who need to have a picture loaded and encourage them to submit a nice individual photo! Know that it takes a few days to allow the photo to be visible in the roster. Our Social to Full Upgrade “Sail” is in full swing with Diana Pagach as our newest upgrade! If you are interested in upgrading to Full from the Social Membership Level, please contact me or Cynthia Hultquist, our Membership Coordinator, and we will share the “Sail” with you! You have until January 15th to upgrade as part of the “Sail!” was the commencement speaker at the Kansas State University College of Engineering Commencement Ceremony in December, the Everitts’ alma mater. The photos show Dave with the Dean of Engineering as well as giving the commencement address. Kansas State has an active co-op program where engineering majors get to have real life work experiences as undergraduates. With co-op placements during COVID, I am certain many of these graduating students will always remember their college work experiences. Congratulations, Dave, on this well-deserved honor.
Vicki Bretthauer
As we are filling up and beginning waitlists, we will have a new part of the column featuring our members. Who better to be featured first than our own Club Chairman Dave Everitt. Dave
I know many of you are active with your alma mater’s alumni groups, sororities, and fraternities. Your Club can host lunches, brunches, or cocktail gatherings. Work with Pam Dorr, our Special Events and Banquets Manager, on planning a fun event for your group. If you are new to the Club, you will soon learn that my favorite part of this column is to introduce you to new members and those members who are upgrading! So, here we go! First, Susan & Tim Smith and Mimi & Frank Conner upgraded from Full to Equity in December! Sal & Linda Farina have returned to us as Equity Members. Patricia Terreri has returned to us as a Social Member. Greg & Margo Folley are returning to us as Full Members on January 1. We are also welcoming Brooke & Dan Franklin as Trial Members. Some of you may have met them on the sunset cruise in December. Please be sure to introduce yourselves to anyone whom you do not recognize! Also, be sure to add your photo to the roster so that everyone will know your name! Remember, it might be worth a free cocktail! Welcome Aboard to all!

I hope everyone is starting to use the website and the new App. I have heard from several members that they love them both. I like having the ability to make a reservation online or on my phone. I have, however, heard some members are having difficulty in making reservations. First, and probably most important, there are several kinds of reservations, and it's important to understand the differences: a. Dining Reservations - (Everyday Lunch, Brunch, and Dinner are considered Dining) These can be made online anytime - presently for parties of 4 or less. Everything else is considered an "Event." b. Special Events - (Holidays, Boaters Night, Wine & Dine) The reservation schedule opens 45 days before the event. We are working toward using a feature when there is a choice of menu items - you may be prompted to make your menu choice when you make your reservation - for every one you include in your reservation. Making these selections ahead of time helps the chef in purchasing. c. Signature Events - (Welcome Back, New Year's Eve Party, Hats & Horses) The reservations open 60 days in advance. d. Cruises - will still be managed with the Cruise Captain, and you select your menu choice if there is one. e. Canceling a Reservation - presently, you will need to call or email the receptionist if you need to cancel a reservation. Second, when you make a reservation and are including others if they are members , it is essential to include the other members' names, including your spouse, in your reservation (instead of just "guest"). Doing this helps avoid duplicate reservations and indicates to the staff you want to sit together. The reservation will be reflected in the website and the App, under "My Reservations." We have created an "Instruction Sheet" for making reservations on the website and through the APP. Click here for tips on making a reservation. (I'll have the link by Tuesday Morning.) Please Note: When looking at the calendar or upcoming events on the website or App, especially Boating Events, you may see "No Registration."
19
Marketing & Communications (cont’d.)
That may or may not be accurate, i.e., a member may be managing the event. Please click on the event, and after the details, you will see a box that states "Reserve with Coordinator."
The contact info for the Coordinator will be included in the details and all emails regarding the event. The wording "No Registration" is something we are working with Northstar to make things clearer. However, it may take a while. As everyone starts using the system, I appreciate receiving your feedback as we continue to investigate ways to make it work better for everyone. "Help Wanted" We're looking for: • 1-2 members who would like to help us "test" the instructions for using the website and App; • Someone to help manage our YouTube and Vimeo Channels. • Someone to follow up with Anchorlines Advertisers and work with Accounting to manage the billings. If you're interested in helping or have comments on the website or App, drop me an email - [email protected]. Michelle Hennessy Chair, Marketing & Communications Committee

IMPORTANT REMINDER TO ALL MIYC BOAT OWNERS
Dear Friends, It’s the time of year to again remind you that Club bylaws require all boat owners participating in any club sponsored boating event, that YOU MUST have and pass a yearly SAFETY BOAT INSPECTION. This is based on the calendar year, so new inspections are required as of January 2022, and all previous inspection stickers are deemed invalid. Upon a successful inspection, you will receive a 2022 Safety Sticker to affix to your boat’s hull or windshield. These inspections are free by appointment and are readily available. We are fortunate to have several inspectors available to our club members, including MIYC members: Paul Soden, (914-450-8066) or Ray Rosenberg [email protected].
Jim Rich
For your convenience, please refer to the MIYC website under Safety and Education. Click on Required Safety Inspections. From there, click on Safety Equipment Requirements for a sample of the actual form the inspector will use to help you prepare for a successful inspection. You will also see the contact names and phone numbers of all inspectors. Please acquire your Vessel Safety Inspection in January as soon as possible, so as not to miss out on any of the great boating events we have scheduled for 2022! Once you have your decal, please notify me so that I can update your status. I can be contacted in the following ways: Phone: 239-248-4166 Text: same Email: [email protected] BE SURE TO GIVE ME YOUR NAME, BOAT NAME, LENGTH, BEAM, DRAFT, AND POWER REQUIREMENTS. This will also help us update any existing records. Thank you for your immediate attention to this notice! Jim Rich Safety and Training Officer

Ship’s Store Update
Happy New Year from the Ship’s Store staff of Deb deVries, Ellie Everitt, Michele Niblack, Kerri Pakalnis, and Joanne Chute. We want to thank all of the Club members for their positive response to the reopening of the Ship’s Store on October 30 and the introduction of the “honor system” purchase process! In general, the system has worked really well. Due to staffing and structural challenges because the Store is open whenever the Club is open, I predict the “honor system” is here to stay. We have made a change to the form we are using that I would like to explain to all of you. We have changed the form to be used for not only Purchase but also to accommodate Return, and Exchange. Think of this form informing whomever is processing it, and providing the directions needed to charge your account correctly. Also think of this form letting the Ship’s Store Staff know what merchandise is in or out of inventory. I have included a sample form for you to look at so you can see how easy it is to complete. We are still in process with understanding and documenting all processes and procedures and at this time we cannot do any credit card sales which impacts being able to sell to MIYC staff. This is temporary and we appreciate the staff’s patience.
We picked merchandise suppliers from whom ideally we can order more of the same if we run out of sizes. We can’t guarantee that we can get you the item you want, but we will certainly try. We have a “wish list” book next to the terminal where you can write down items you would like in a different size or color, and also items you would like to see us carry. We do carry Member only items such as 12”, 14”, 16” burgees, Club pins, Club bullions, Club ties and we special order Bridge shirts for members. Those items are not on display. Please ask about these items by contacting any of the Ship’s Store Committee members. Since we opened, we have received some new Susquehanna glassware including more martini glasses and double old fashioned glasses. There are some new YETI low ball drinkware. In addition, we have new clothing items: the very popular Women’s fleece drape cardigan in white and now in black as well; Women’s slickers; Men’s windbreakers; and Women’s and Men’s golf shirts. And we got a small supply of what were ordered as Youth caps but seem larger and are in the not-to-be-found anywhere color of white! Check it out!
Happy New Year Deb deVries

Getting to Know You: MIYC's Dedicated and Hard-working Full-time Servers
Kathy Tummarello Kathy was born in Somers Point, New Jersey, where she graduated from High School, also earning a degree as a medical assistant. She has had a significant other for the last 25 years. Her two surviving children (two others are deceased) are named Jac (44) and Britt (31), and also live here in Florida. She has a green thumb, likes to bike ride, and enjoys renovating furniture and make things look new again. Prior to being with us at the Yacht Club, Kathy was a manager at the Castaways Restaurant and Bar in Naples for 14 years. “I enjoy bartending and take pride in making a cocktail to your liking. I also will do my best to add something to a dish to make it pop.” A typical day for Kathy begins with setting up the tables, taking inventory of the bar, ordering what is needed, checking the lunch and dinner reservations, and making sure our members will have all of their favorite items available. Kathy has two little grandchildren, Leo and Aryia (“The loves of my life!”), and enjoys the time she can spend with them. She also likes to go back home to be with her parents. Her favorites? Rock and Roll for music, White Christmas and Pretty Woman for movies, Monopoly, Poker, and a good night out with a few vodkas rounds out the list. Her community focus areas include St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, the Humane Society, and animal control. Her bucket list is short: a ride on a Gondola in Venice! Her goal for next year: “Get all of the repairs done in my house.” And her motto? “Enjoy life because you never know what can happen.”

There’s a Daytime Activity for Everyone at MIYC! A q u a f i t a t M I Y C Aquafit classes take place at the heated MIMA pool at 10:30 am on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Don't miss this opportunity to enjoy water aerobics - a low-impact activity that takes the pressure off your bones, joints and muscles. Water also offers natural resistance, which can help strengthen your muscles and you can add resistance devices to burn more calories! Exercising in the pool provides the toning and cardiovascular benefits of exercise on dry land with less strain and stress plus it allows for a greater range of motion helping with flexibility and balance. And most importantly, it is enjoyable fun! As with any other exercise routine, just be certain you get medical clearance from your health care provider before taking the plunge. Contact Coordinator Peggy Frazier (email: [email protected]) with questions or if you need to change the time.

Lunch at the Havana Café in Chokoloskee Monday, December 13
Forty intrepid travelers participated in a unique “boatless” day cruise by car to the Havana Café in Chokoloskee. This incredible restaurant offered beautiful garden seating, authentic home baked Cuban bread and an accommodating staff. The menu offered a refreshing variety of Cuban inspired food, stone crab enchiladas, seafood and more. Chokoloskee is about ten minutes south of Everglades City and attendees had viewing opportunities of birds and alligators on the way. After lunch, a visit to the Smallwood Store and Museum, an exceptional slice of Florida history overlooking Chokoloskee Bay, was filled with fascinating discoveries! Did you know that the wooden counters slanted in at the floor to accommodate hoop skirts? And the first Coke machine came to town in 1945 at the Store which had the only electricity for 30 miles. Today visitors from around the world visit to go back in time while others fish from the back dock and launch kayaks into the Ten Thousand Islands.

Mariners Fund The Mariners Fund is a way to finance extraordinary MIYC needs; things outside of the normal budget; Club enhancements that will make the member experience better and up to date. For example, the Burgee Bar renovation was made possible entirely by member donations. The bar was expanded, new drop-down window covers were installed and attractive curtains and valances were added. The Mariners Fund also paid to upgrade the Club’s sound system and supported the installation of a new dimmer system to enhance lighting in the Harbour Room. All these improvements were made possible by the generous support of our members. A donation to the Mariners Fund is a symbol of MIYC member commitment. How Can I Donate? You can make a general donation or donate for a specific project. We have identified a number of needs and wishes, which are listed in a binder just below the recognition plaque in the lobby. If you’d like to donate, please download the Mariners Fund Donation Form, on which you can indicate the project you wish to support, the amount of donation and how you wish to pay (separate check, credit card or Club monthly statement.) If there is something special you would like to see happen and would like to financially support, please let any member of the Mariners Fund Committee know. Mariners Fund Recognition Levels A Mariners Fund recognition plaque in the lobby hallway honors the cumulative contributions Members have made.
