(by Jon Pelson, with apologies to Robert Service) The Celebration of Jason Green

There are strange things done in the 12-hour sun By the fellow turning old; The jungle trails have their secret tales That would make your blood run cold; The southern lights have seen queer sights, But the queerest they’ve ever seen, Was when this hodge-podge at the Minga Lodge Celebrated Jason Green.

Now Jason’s from the east, he’s from Long Island, in Glen Cove. Why he left his home and chose to roam the Valley, heaven knows. But he made his finds with a single-minded vision that he wrote; With acronyms like “CRM,” and "SaaS" and now “The Moat.” As Jason thrived he kept his eyes on giving as he got, He always cared enough to share (though frankly, he got a lot). With loving bride right by his side he had his guiding lights; He always knew he could turn to his Annie for advice. Though really, there, to be quite fair, one gain from his new mate, Was saving all those hours he’d spent searching for a date. When birthday came, out in the rain, we motored up the Napo; Who could surmise, were his friends wise or were they full of crappo? When night came ’round we heard the sound of Tom-Toms on the deck, Who strummed guitars beneath the stars. (don’t quit your day jobs yet.) ’Twas nice the boys had many ploys but kept it within reason; So glad that Mike and Ben avoided Ecuadorian prison. The soaking rains, they finally came and left us to drip dry, In matching wardrobes cleared out from the on-line REI, Except for some who seemed to come in clothing so much neater; Modeling their jungle chic, Maya, AJ and Roswitha.

We couldn’t beat the futbol team, but gave them quite a run, With secret weapon David Beckham, bending it like Alison, They couldn’t score too many goals with Mochary in net; The big surprise with pint-sized Mochary, who was better yet.

Now Tom is a Cubano, so it shouldn’t seem so funny, That he beat up that Pinata like he thought it owed him money. Jerry beat a million skeeters, wrapped to guard his fate; The Davids had a better plan, they simply showed up late. This wouldn’t be complete without a call-out to the staff; It’s clear that Craig had separated wheat apart from chaff. Our Canuck hosts were most committed to their cause and more; They kept us safe and fed deep in the heart of Ecuador.

On the dance floor we hustled more, the footwork that was best, Was a Harbach sister, of course ’twas Christa, who schooled all of the rest. The other moves were mighty smooth, if I can use some kindness; Our plantain game the kids wish came with temporary blindness. The girls kept occupied with all the fun that they could find, So much that Mary almost took a job and stayed behind. Speaking of an all-in guy, Ric took the job site on; And realized a dream he’d had, a rock star from San Juan! The struggles spread up to our heads, with one person yet unnamed, But Katie knew her gorgeous curly hair could not be tamed. If things got rough, we had enough support to help us back; Like our MacGyver, Steve, and world survivors, Go Wolf Pack! And speaking of unmanageable risk, that got much bigger; As each night, Claire and Wilson roasted Dad with endless vigor. Perhaps the waters made the daughters want to play the ham; With Tobey’s kicks, and then a fix of lip-synching by Sam.

There are strange things done in the 12-hour sun For a guy who’s turning fifty; In the Amazon, it was party on! It was really pretty nifty; The southern lights have seen queer sights, But the queerest they’ve ever seen, Was when this hodge-podge at the Minga Lodge Celebrated Jason Green.
