MUCH TO BE THANKFUL FOR

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times …” I love this line from Charles Dickens’ “A Tale of Two Cities.” This line pretty much sums up how I feel about 2018. Last year, my wife of 22 years filed for divorce two days before Christmas. As you can imagine, 2018 started out a tad bit rough for me. My whole world was turned upside down. This experience has given me a greater sense of empathy for clients who go through this awful process before filing bankruptcy. While it has been a painful year, it has also been a great year. I have learned just how much my friends and family love me. My sisters and my mother have been with me this year through thick and thin. I am so grateful for all of the support I have received this year. It has been such a blessing.

5. I have an awesome golden retriever named Buddy.

6. I have made a lot of new friends this year who are now special parts of my life.

7. I get to work with awesome clients. It is a great joy in my life to help my clients get a new start. I have a great appreciation for this.

8. I picked up a really cool piece of word art at the Chiaha festival to remind myself to keep a thankful mindset.

Our office had a fun time dressing up for Halloween and going out to lunch!

9. I have taken guitar lessons this year, and I’m improving bit by bit each day.

As Thanksgiving 2018 approaches, I realize I have so much to be thankful for.

1. I have four healthy, wonderful children.

10. My office manager, Tori Nelson, and my associate, Will Harper, have been such good friends, listening to all my sob stories, and they have been so encouraging. All in all, I have so much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. I wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving! –Jeff Kelly

2. I have a fantastic staff who has stuck with me through a difficult time.

3. I bought a nice, small house that is within walking distance from my Rome office. I love being able to walk to restaurants in downtown Rome.

4. I bought a used Jeep Wrangler this year, and I love it.

THANKSGIVING PREP FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

Thanksgiving is more than just a feast; it’s about coming together as a family and being thankful for one another. So why wait to get into the spirit until everyone is seated at the table? Here are a few ways you can make the actual preparation of Thanksgiving dinner fun and engaging for the whole family! GIVE EVERYONE A ROLE No, not those rolls — yet. Making the feast a family project can turn the day from a hectic list of chores into a magical bonding experience. It’s important to match each family member to a job that best fits their abilities. Young children can mash potatoes or rinse ingredients in the sink. Older kids can take on more responsibility, like measuring ingredients, keeping an eye on timers, and setting the table. Teens and young adults can supervise their younger siblings and cousins in these important tasks and may be called upon to stir what’s on the stove while an adult checks on the football game. ROLL OUT THE DECORATIONS Still not talking about bread. Not everything in Thanksgiving preparation needs to be tied to the kitchen. Creative family members of all ages can work together to bring some seasonal flare to the dining room. Maybe this means picking up some Thanksgiving coloring books, or perhaps the family can venture outdoors to collect autumn trimmings for crafts. It’s a great way to let each family member put their own personal spin on the holiday! HAVE A ‘ROLLER DERBY’ Finally . While an adult should be the one to put these delicious baked goods in the oven, the whole family can help shape the dough. In fact, Care.com recommends “Although I’ve never filed bankruptcy with this firm, I do know that the attorneys at this firm are honest and caring in everything that they do. I know Jessi personally, and she is always polite, positive, and professional. If I could give more than five stars to this firm, I would, as I know that this firm goes above and beyond for their clients. I see firsthand how hard and how late the Law Office of Jeff Kelly will work to get the best possible outcomes for their clients. I highly recommend them to anyone in need of debt relief.” –Josh G. “From the very first consultation to every office meeting or phone meeting, this law firm has been most helpful during such a stressful time in the lives of my husband and me. Our case had several unique issues that required expert advice and handling. Jeff’s office always responded quickly to our concerns and explained everything in a thorough manner, without being condescending. We were shown compassion in the midst of our difficulties that allowed us to have hope for our future. We hold them in the highest regard and will recommend them to anyone facing financial difficulty.” –Karen T.

making this a contest. Set aside a time when everyone can vie for the title of Fastest Roll Maker, and you’ll have plenty of warm, flaky, delicious treats come dinnertime.

Letting everyone play a part may take a little more planning and add slightly more chaos to your Thanksgiving preparations. But it’s sure to produce a lot of great memories and bonding moments among your loved ones. And by the time you sit down to eat, you’ll all have something to be thankful for right in front of you — Those. Delicious. Rolls.

THE PRESIDENT WHO GAVE US THANKSGIVING AND FILED FOR BANKRUPTCY

left him with the debt of the company. Lincoln filed for bankruptcy, but because of laws at the time, creditors were able to seize his only remaining assets — a horse and his survey equipment — and those were still not enough to pay the debt. He continued to pay it off even after being elected a state legislator. There’s the belief that people file for bankruptcy to escape making payments, but that’s not the reality of our laws. When someone declares bankruptcy, it’s because it’s absolutely impossible for them to get back any money. Our Founding Fathers wrote many checks and balances into the constitution and made bankruptcy a last-resort option. Thankfully, they also recognized that we are human and allowed for grace in the constitution. There are plenty of stories like Lincoln’s that show even after going through bankruptcy, you can get a second chance. There is life after bankruptcy. Lincoln didn’t have the safety net of modern bankruptcy laws to protect his assets; but fortunately, we do. If you find that your finances haven’t gone according to plan, talk with an attorney at the Law Office of Jeffrey Kelly about your options. We’re here to help.

It’s almost that time again. Time to cut into the turkey, pour the gravy over everything, and watch the post-meal games with our family.

But do you know why we still celebrate Thanksgiving? Besides our early settlers, the man who made the holiday a true American classic was our 16th president. That’s right, Abraham Lincoln turned Thanksgiving into a federally recognized holiday. Here’s another tidbit you may not have learned about Honest Abe in history class: He filed for bankruptcy. In 1833, years before he became the leader of our country and made Thanksgiving a nationally celebrated tradition, Lincoln declared bankruptcy and spent the next 17 years paying off his debts.

While Lincoln was skilled at many things, being a shopkeeper was not one of them. He and his partner took loans to grow their business; but after seeing it wasn’t profitable, Lincoln sold his shares. Unfortunately, Lincoln’s business partner died and

The Cook’s Workout

A Quick Workout Prepare Yourself for the Thanksgiving Feast

formation. Rotate your arms in backward circles, switch to forward arm circles, and finish up by holding your squat for an additional 30 seconds.

When you’re in the kitchen cooking your signature dishes for Thanksgiving dinner, you might find yourself with short periods of nothing to do. While you wait, why not fit in a quick workout? Exercising for 30 minutes will help ease any anxieties you may have — perhaps about getting those side dishes just right, or about your in-laws, who will soon be seated at your table. To start off, you’ll need to warm up. Keeping the oven in sight and the timer well within earshot, take a few minutes to loosen up your muscles. Jog in place, do some jumping jacks for a minute, or jump in place for 45 seconds. Warmups often consist of these basic exercises, but one set of each won’t be enough. To make sure your body is completely warmed up, repeat each set at least three times. After you’ve warmed up, it’s time to start the workout. Squat jumps, ski jumps, pushups, plank crawls, and holding a squat stance are easy exercises you can do in your kitchen, dining room, or living room while your feast cooks. Do each exercise as many times as you can in a minute, and just like you did in the warmup, repeat each set three times. While in your squat stance, there are several things you can do. For 30-second intervals, put your arms out in a “T” formation and move them up and down in small pulses. Then move your arms out in front of you and return to the “T” shape. Raise your arms up over your head and clap, and then return once more to the “T”

This 30-minute exercise routine is great for before, during, and after your Thanksgiving meal prep. You don’t have to wait around all day for things to finish up — occupy your downtime with short exercises to keep your heart pumping.
