When I was choosing my career path, there were two things I knew for certain. I wanted to work in health care, and I wanted to do so with my hands. Initially, my mind went to physical therapy. I would have an opportunity to heal people while guiding them through effective treatment. But then I saw a flier for the Dental College of Georgia at Augusta University. My friend and my cousin were interested in the field, and something clicked in my head. With dentistry, I could see the results immediately. Physical therapy takes time, but most procedures and treatments in dentistry are quick and the results are immediate. With a simple procedure, you can give someone relief from their pain or give them back the confidence they were missing. I really enjoy helping people find confidence and functionality to lead happier, healthier lives. I’m honored to join Jones and Copeland Smiles. I have been practicing in the area for a number of years, and I had actually set out to start my own dental practice. As I was preparing, a mutual friend in the industry told me that Drs. Jones and Copeland were planning to bring a new dentist on to join their team. I was instantly intrigued. This practice has a strong reputation in the dental community, and I just had a feeling this would be a great place to work. With the timing, it was as if God put this opportunity in front of me, and I knew I had to run with it. Despite my prior plans, I knew this was the change I needed. I can honestly say that joining the Jones and Copeland Smiles dental team has been the best decision I have ever made — even better than picking up that flier back in college! A LEAP OF FAITH A Change in Plans that Changed So Much More!
I have already learned so much in my short tenure at the practice, and I have grown as a practitioner despite not exactly being a “new” dentist. I’m looking forward to continuing to grow my skills and strengthen my knowledge. I have an interest in the ways in which cosmetic and implant surgery can change lives, and I am taking additional courses to learn more about this crucial component to dental care. It might seem strange, but I love learning about it! I also truly enjoy practicing with a great team, and a culture of no lectures or judgements — just doing the right thing for patients. When I’m not at work, I like to spend time outdoors and with my wife, Nancy, and our 7-month-old son, Timothy. We like to take Timothy on long walks, and I enjoy going swimming or playing soccer. I was also born in Egypt, but my family moved here when I was an infant. I grew up not too far from the practice, and certainly call Gwinnett County home. And when we’re not outside, on Sundays, my family and I are devout in attending our church. I am honored to be part of the Jones and Copeland Smiles family. Thank you to those of you who have welcomed me with open arms. I hope to meet many more of you all soon!

JUST LIKE RIDING A BIKE
CYCLING IS THE PERFECT ACTIVITY FOR ALL AGES
You likely learned how to ride a bike as a kid — according to a 2013 survey, about 94% of American adults did. Even if it has been a while since your last ride, most people agree you never forget how, and you don’t have to be in great shape to get started. Outside of walking, biking might be the most accessible exercise for all ages and ability levels. The beauty of biking is that it can be as relaxing or challenging as you want. The average kid learns to ride at around 5 years old, so the basics aren’t complicated. Biking helps young children get outside and gives them a taste of being a “big kid.” As a result, it’s excellent for their self-esteem as well as their fitness.
Meanwhile, those looking for a challenge can easily find one. If you want a strenuous workout, it’s easy to ride farther, increase the resistance on your bike, or pick a steeper bike trail to explore. Biking is only a cakewalk if you choose to make it one. Since it’s perfect for all ages, cycling is the ideal outdoor activity to do with your family, allowing everyone to be involved in quality time together while promoting their health. To get started, make sure everyone has a bike they can use comfortably
and a helmet that fits, plus understands bike safety. Once the basics are taken care of, you’re ready to hit the trails or explore the neighborhood.
Cycling is also perfect for adults who are new to exercise or need a low-impact activity. A short ride on a flat surface will get the heart rate up without

Natural” personal care products are all the rage, and the trend has reached the dental care aisle. Many manufacturers now offer natural toothpaste as an alternative to the mainstream brands you grew up with. But what are the differences between natural and traditional toothpaste? And what do dentists have to say about this latest fad? As in many things, the definition of “natural” toothpaste depends on whom you ask. Some people argue that toothpaste is “natural” if it doesn’t contain the foaming agent sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). Others, however, say that toothpaste isn’t natural if it contains fluoride, an agent used to help strengthen teeth. Fluoride has long been the subject to debate, but the American Dental Association calls it safe and effective at preventing tooth decay. Most dentists recommend its use and urge people to steer clear of fluoride-free toothpaste. In fact, some brands may even state right on the label that their product doesn’t prevent cavities. Outside of fresh breath, preventing tooth and gum disease is why we brush, so using a toothpaste that doesn’t prevent cavities makes little sense. SLS-free toothpaste, however, is a different matter. The chemical can irritate some people’s gums or skin. Soap and other cleaning products have caused us to associate foaming with cleanliness, so most toothpaste manufacturers include SLS for consumers’ psychological The Latest Dental Fad:

benefit — not the health of their teeth. If it bothers you, feel free to ditch it.
Unfortunately, many natural toothpaste brands use charcoal
in their products. Researchers with the University of Maryland School of Dentistry have found no evidence that charcoal-based toothpaste is effective or safe. More research is needed, but many dentists will discourage the use of charcoal toothpaste because it may wear down enamel. If you want to try natural toothpaste, start by considering the ingredients. Among dentists, the consensus is to avoid toothpaste that is made from charcoal, is fluoride-free, or has sugar. SLS-free products, on the other hand, are fair game. When in doubt, read the label carefully before putting a new toothpaste in your mouth. Or even better, strike up a conversation with your dentist during your next appointment.
SMILE-FRIENDLY RECIPES
BRAIN BREAK!
ONE-PAN CHICKEN TACOS
Ingredients
• 1 lb chicken breasts, sliced into 1-inch pieces • 2 tbsp garlic powder • 2 tbsp cumin • 2 tbsp chipotle powder
• Canola oil (for frying) • Corn tortillas • Grated cheddar cheese • Pico de gallo and guacamole salsa (to taste)
Directions
1. In a mixing bowl, combine the chicken pieces, garlic powder, cumin, and chipotle powder. Mix until the chicken is coated. 2. In a frying pan, heat the oil. When the oil is hot, add the chicken mixture. Cook on medium heat for 5–8 minutes. 3. Remove the chicken from the pan, and add the corn tortillas (avoid overlapping) so they soak up the juices. Flip the tortillas and repeat. Then, add chicken and grated cheddar to each tortilla and fold it over the filling — in the pan. 4. Cook the tacos for 3 minutes per side until the tortillas are crispy and the cheese is melted. 5. Top with pico and guacamole salsa, and serve!
