‘WELCOME BACK’ We Look Forward to Seeing You Again

I think it’s safe to say that many things have changed since last spring. As I’m writing this, Eloise, Teddy, Finn, and Georgia are all in the process of wrapping up the school year. This next year will bring three new schools to our house (I still can’t believe we will have a middle- schooler!), but it also feels so encouraging to have some return to “normalcy.” Going to pools, eating popsicles, making beach plans, and seeing maskless faces in the park are all welcome from my perspective. It has also been so nice to welcome back so many of you into the office recently. As mass vaccinations are

While disinfection has come to the forefront of our thoughts this past year, I can say that dentistry was in a familiar territory of sterilization. Since the onset of transmissible diseases such as HIV and hepatitis, dentistry underwent dramatic changes in the 1980s and ’90s. Whether from autoclavable instruments and equipment to single-use items, dentistry was forced to really examine sterilization practices decades ago. As a testament to this, we have seen extremely low COVID cases among dental workers nationwide and locally.

As for our office, we will continue all enhanced

rapidly increasing and COVID-19 cases are dropping, we’ve thoroughly enjoyed seeing so many of you back in the office for semi-annual checkups and hygiene appointments. For those of you we have not seen yet, please know that we are ready for you when you are comfortable and ready to return. Whether it’s been a little over six months, or over six years, I just wanted to say, “Welcome back,” and we genuinely look forward to seeing you again.

cleaning measures. Whether you prefer to wait in your car with your own music, or if you’d like to come in and use the restroom or grab a beverage, please know you’re all so very welcome! I know I speak for all of us when I say I hope this change of seasons into summer brings your family health and happiness, and we hope to see you soon!

IS ANIMAL THERAPY RIGHT FOR YOU?

YOUR GUIDE TO AAT There are just some things only a dog can understand — same with a cat, or a horse, or a bird, for that matter. That’s the idea behind animal-assisted therapy (AAT), a treatment designed to help those with mental and physical challenges. AAT may look like snuggling and playing with animals, but it’s much more involved than you may think.

pain related to chemotherapy or surgery, provide connection to residents in long- term care facilities, or even offer exercise for those with limited mobility.

processes intended to help each party gain the skills needed to help patients. To qualify, animals also need to be clean and vaccinated, and the type of animal that is used during AAT also depends on a person’s condition, the location of the therapy, and a patient’s need. Is AAT right for you? AAT isn’t for everyone, but it can be a vital component of your healing process. It’s often seen as a supplemental form of therapy intended to bolster other therapies. The important thing to remember when considering AAT is to establish reasonable goals. Discuss the possibility of using AAT with your doctor or therapist and consider which animals may bring you the most comfort. Be realistic about what you want and need before attempting AAT.

Aren’t those just emotional support animals?

In recent years, emotional support animals have become increasingly popular both in the media and in their use. Emotional support animals offer their owners vital emotional assistance, but they differ greatly from trained therapy animals. AAT requires the use of a trained animal under the direction of a handler, who will also coordinate with medical professionals to ensure the strategies that they deploy will target what a patient needs. Prior to practicing, trainers and their animals must each pass certification

What is AAT? AAT relies on an innate human need to connect with animals. The idea is that humans form bonds with living things, and this connection can have a calming effect on our minds. Physical therapy and massage therapy involve tangible actions on the part of the therapist, while AAT relies on the relationship between a human and an animal. This could help someone cope with grief, lessen a medical patient’s

Pro Tips to Create a Motivating Playlist ORCHESTRATE YOUR WORKOUT

Whether summer temperatures drive you to work outside or simply make you want to move indoors where the air conditioner is blasting, having an upbeat playlist can help you quickly pass the time and feel good, too. There’s no better way to learn how to put together a motivational playlist than to ask a pro. Peloton’s bikes and treadmills are wildly popular, but now, users are working out through their app because of the high-energy instructors, many of whom have become known for their amazing playlists. Here are two instructors’ tips to put together a killer playlist.

Which songs make the cut? Ones that inspire. “I think people will be so surprised by how much they will push themselves when they’re moved by the feeling of a song or how the music makes them feel,” she says. It doesn’t matter if it’s ambient electronic music or a lilting Johnny Cash tune, both of which can be found routinely on Hainby’s cycling playlists. Make It Themed Whether you’re obsessed with ‘90s pop, classic rock jams, or David Bowie, you can use a theme to create workout playlists you’ll love. This is a great trick pros like Peloton instructor Christine D’Ercole use. D’Ercole is beloved by many for her themed classes, which range from an indie rock beginners’ ride to a fan-favorite all ‘90s ride. She also has holiday- themed playlists, like the one for her Women’s History Month ride in March that featured only female artists. You can always hop onto Spotify and check out the Peloton page to see all of their instructors’ recent playlists. Use this for inspiration to create your own list or stream whichever compilation catches your attention for your next workout.

Mix It Up Instructor Leanne Hainsby is known for the eclectic, feel- good songs that keep people pedaling hard in her cycling classes. Hainsby credits her vast musical tastes to her time as a dancer, which expanded her playlist for workout music.
