REPORT THE WELLNESS Slowing Down 770-965-3048 • www.JonesSmiles.com • NOVEMBER 2020 AND REFLECTING ON WHAT’S TRULY IMPORTANT

I love fall and Thanksgiving! I enjoy the crisp air, pumpkin spice everything, and getting my house all decorated for the holiday season. Ever since I can remember, Thanksgiving has been one of my favorite holidays. It is a time of nostalgia and reflection. Each year, I love to pull out my recipe box and cook some of my family’s favorite dishes that have been passed down over the years. The endless food, desserts, and rivalry football games also make for a great day — but in the past few years I’ve learned to love Thanksgiving for a greater reason. For me, Thanksgiving provides a time to gather with family and to reflect on all that we have to be thankful for. Personally, the events of this year have left me thinking about what is truly important.

I think most people would agree that 2020 will go down in the history books as an unusual year.

But from the trials of 2020, I think we can all look back and see lessons we’ve learned about health, resilience, and community. We were all forced to slow down (whether we wanted to or not), but in that time I realized what I truly value in my day-to-day life: a visit with a relative, dinner with friends, a trip to the grocery store to find everything on my list, a hug, or even going to work.

What I have discovered is that it’s the little things in life that we often take for granted that are what truly mean the most!

During these times, we try to reflect on all we are thankful for as a family: our time together, our health, freedom, and the promise of daily bread. On a reflective note, if you are reading this, I speak for Dr. Jones and myself when I say that we are thankful for you!

“ What I have discovered is that it’s the little things in life that we often take for granted that are what truly mean the most!”

The support, friendship, and trust from each of

you is what makes our mission possible. We wish you all a very happy

Thanksgiving full of food, family, fun, and gratitude!

3 BEST BOOKS FOR YOUR CHILDREN TO SINK THEIR TEETH INTO DFDFS

Watching your child grow and experience new things is one of the most wonderful parts about being a parent. Yet, many firsts, like a child’s first visit to the dentist, can be scary for them. That’s why it’s so important to talk to them about their first appointment and what it might be like. Reading to your kids is one of the best ways to help them understand the world around them, including dental health and

going to the dentist. Here are three books that your child will learn from and love!

details what a dentist’s appointment is like in an easy-to-understand way. It even shows kids what a cavity is when the dentist discovers a “hole” in one of Jake’s teeth. There are also educational takeaways as the story tells why it’s important to take care of your teeth, along with some ways to keep them healthy. Find “Going to the Dentist” in paperback on Amazon for $4.95. ‘The Berenstain Bears Visit the Dentist’ Join Sister and Brother Bear as they visit a dentist — Sister’s got a loose tooth and Brother’s found a cavity! This book captures the anxiety a child might feel before a dental visit, as Brother teases Sister about going to the dentist. However, not only does Sister have a wonderful visit with Dr. Bearson, but she also gets a visit from the Tooth Fairy. You can find this book on Amazon in paperback for $4.49 or on Kindle for $4.99.

‘Brush, Brush, Brush!’

This rhythmic book can help your child get into a groove while brushing their teeth. What’s great about this book is that the words can be sung to the tune of “Do Your Ears Hang Low?” This helps your child remember proper techniques as they’re dancing along to their new song. The combination of the song and bright illustrations will assure that your child loves this book. “Brush, Brush, Brush!” can be found at Barnes & Noble for $6.95.

The Importance of Oral Care HOW TO KEEP YOUR MOUTH HEALTHY WHEN YOU ARE SICK

Stop the Cough

Flu season is right around the corner, which means people will inevitably get sick. Whether you come down with the sniffles or a fever, one thing is for sure: Taking care of your body should be your No. 1 priority to help you stay healthy. While rest and hydration help, it’s also important to take care of your mouth. An American Dental Association dentist, Dr. Gene Romo, states that “it’s important to take care of your dental health all year, but especially when you’re sick.”

A sore throat and coughing are some of the more prevalent symptoms of the common cold or flu. Cough drops are used to soothe the throat and help reduce coughing, and while they do

work, many cough drops contain sugar. “It is like sucking on candy,” Dr. Romo says. To avoid this, check the label before you purchase them. Make sure to avoid any ingredients like corn syrup and fructose.

Swish and Spit

Brush With Care

Nausea and vomiting can be negative side effects of getting sick. Dr. Romo states that “when you vomit, stomach acids are coming in contact with your teeth and coating them.” It’s tempting to brush your teeth right away after you’ve been sick, but doing so could actually rub those acids all over your teeth. Before brushing, rinse your mouth with a diluted mouth rinse (a mixture of water and 1 teaspoon baking soda) to remove any acids that might be lingering in your mouth and wait 30 minutes.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that the flu virus can live on moist surfaces, including toothbrushes, for 72 hours. After you’ve been sick, you need to be especially mindful. It can be in your best interest to throw your toothbrush away, but if you decide to keep it, you can clean the toothbrush by soaking it in antibacterial mouthwash for a few minutes before future use.

Keep yourself and your mouth as healthy as you can this flu season!

IS ‘GLAMPING’ THE PERFECT WINTER GETAWAY? CABIN FEVER HAS NEVER BEEN SO STYLISH

glamping experience possible? Luckily, there are a few tips and tricks you can apply to any glamping location to ensure that your time away from home is just as relaxing as that Caribbean cruise would have been. Step 1: Decide which kind of lodging you want. Glamping shelters come in all shapes and sizes depending on the level of comfort you desire on your trip. The most rugged glamping lodgings usually still include a wood-burning stove and a nice comfy bed, whether you opt for a log cabin or a specialized glamping tent (sometimes called a yurt). However, some of the more posh options include amenities like fresh linens, private bathrooms and showers, fully stocked kitchenettes, and even TVs. Step 2: Decide how you want to spend your time. Obviously, the point of glamping is to spend time in the great outdoors with winter activities, such as snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and other fun snow activities. However, glamping really shines during the frigid evenings. You can retreat indoors, throw some logs in the stove, prepare some hot cocoa or cider, and just watch the snowfall from your window. There’s no right or wrong way to glamp. All that matters is spending time in the wilderness with all the comforts of home — all while feeling refreshed and at peace.

W hen COVID-19 struck the U.S., travel restrictions had people canceling their vacation plans left and right. This meant that many would-be vacationers had to find some getaways a little closer to home — namely, camping trips and their fancier cousin, glamping trips. If you haven’t heard of “glamping” before, it’s essentially glamorous camping. You have access to the beautiful, rugged outdoors as well as all the comforts of home. While traditional winter camping certainly wouldn’t be a relaxing getaway for most people, glamping during the winter months can give you access to the peace of the outdoors like you’ve never experienced before without so much as a shiver or sniffle. If you’ve decided to make glamping your go-to method of escape from the cabin fever that besets us all during the cold, dark winter days, you might be thinking: How can I make sure I have the best
