Members, We have received word that Our Daily Bread Food Pantry needs our help. They are experiencing a Pasta shortage, yes.... Pasta! Spaghetti is a staple in many of their guests’ pantries and Our Daily Bread Food Pantry's pasta shelves are empty. Their last two orders of pasta were not fulfilled. Please consider bringing some pasta - preferrably 1-lb bags when you come to the Club. Getting ready to head North? You can also bring items as you empty your pantry! The basket for Our Daily Bread Food Pantry donations is in our lobby so feel free to drop off items any time you are coming to the Club. We have members who deliver your donations several times a week. Or, you can donate online by Also, please refer to the Salvation Army of Collier County’s Annual Report on Pages 8-9. Over 42,000 toys were distributed via the Toys for Tots Programs. We are proud to support them in this and other efforts. Thanks to all of our members for your continued generosity to these local causes. Sincerely, Dwyn Von Bereghy Chair, MIYC Community Outreach clicking this link!

2022 Summer Reciprocal Clubs as of 26 May 2022
• Participating Clubs are highlighted. • This document will be updated periodically during the summer. • Click here to access the list of Reciprocal Clubs or visit the MIYC website.
A total lunar eclipse occurred on 15–16 May 2022, the first of two total lunar eclipses in 2022. The event occurred near lunar perigee; as a result, this event was referred to some in media coverage as a "super flower blood moon” and elsewhere as a "super blood moon”, a supermoon that coincides with a total lunar eclipse. The eclipse was the longest total lunar eclipse visible from some of the United States, and nearly all North America since 1989. ( Pictures courtesy of Susan Hieftje )

Getting to Know You MIYC Server Donovan Marchio
Donovan, also known as Donnie or Don, was born in Joliet, Illinois, where he finished high school and attended some college courses. His prior experience includes being a fish monger and eight years of customer service. He now is living in the Naples area, and has a girlfriend. In addition to his table service, Donovan has applied his fast-learning and commonsense skills to help out with the dining room setup and tear down. When not at the Club, he enjoys riding his mountain bike, fishing, hanging with his buddies, and sleeping. He has an interest in reptiles and is a horror movie fanatic. He will be focusing in the upcoming year on figuring out his future career. Donovan’s personal motto? “It’s better to ask for forgiveness than permission.”

Chairman
Things have certainly slowed down a bit on the island. Many residents have departed for parts North. And you can now find a parking spot at the Publix on N. Collier Avenue! The same is true for our Club. The number of people attending events is lower than during season, and you can feel the more relaxed atmosphere around the Club. That is not to say there hasn't been a lot happening, however! It seems to some of us that we have spent much of this spring responding
Dave Everitt
to mechanical issues at the Club. The problems certainly reflect the age and level of maintenance provided over the past twenty years. But like many challenges, the problems seem to visit us when we least need them. Probably most notable is the passenger elevator. The electrical components of the elevator failed earlier this spring, and we have had to rely on the freight elevator to get some members upstairs and down. While this does give those members a different perspective of the Club, we do need to repair the passenger elevator. After soliciting quotes from three companies, we have signed a contract to refurbish the elevator and related systems. The project will take place in September. Thank you to Geoff Walker for his active leadership in this project. Geoff has also had the opportunity to get more familiar with our waste handling systems. One of the valves that handles the movement of wastewater from the property to the sanitary sewer system failed a couple of months ago. Geoff, in conjunction with various contractors and engineering firms, was able to get the pumps working. As I told Geoff..."it was a dirty job, but someone had to do it!". Thank you, again, Geoff! We have also been soliciting input from the staff and a random selection of members for our planned building refurbishment. That input has been passed to our architect and interior design contractors. We are working toward a planned communication to the membership later this summer or early fall that will help visualize the changes and determine the cost. We will review the project in the November membership meeting. And throughout the summer, we are continuing to provide a great dining and club experience for those members and guests who will be here this summer. If you are in the area during the summer, don't forget to check the MIYC website for special dining offerings. And if you depart the area for the summer but return for a quick visit from time to time, don't forget to stop by. We always enjoy hearing what our members are up to! Finally, as the 'season' winds down, I would be remiss if I didn't say "Thank You" to all our members...those that have been with us for several years as well as those that have joined our club more recently. Our club is a friendly, welcoming group that makes being a member enjoyable and satisfying. It is so only because of the camaraderie and friendliness of our members. Enjoy the summer!

Commodore Your Marco Island Yacht Club hosted the General Meeting of the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs over the weekend of May 13-15. Nearly 100 Directors, Alternate Directors, and members of various Yacht Clubs gathered here to enjoy some genuine Marco Island hospitality. The FCYC Bridge and the Directors from all 37 member clubs meet every two months at one of the clubs to do a little business, get to meet members from other clubs, and mostly to have a lot of fun. For this meeting, lots of behind-the-scenes work was done by many contributors, from Debbie designing the Credentials for attendees, to Vicki Bretthauer designing and stuffing the welcome SWAG gift bags, to Dockmaster Missy welcoming and
Tom Wentworth
docking boats, to Fleet Captain Dwyn von Bereghy arranging the 37 visiting Club burgees and hoisting them all on the flagpole (which made a very beautiful and unusual sight) also helping with registration, to Cynthia welcoming attendees as they arrived and registering them, to Pam arranging the tables and managing the waitstaff, to Nikki's lovely smile lighting up the reception area as she greeted guest after guest (assisted at times by brand-new Brian), to Melanie Kraemer, Dave Randall, Shelly Derrough and M.A. Harlacker manning the registration tables on Friday and Saturday, to volunteer Members staffing the Ship's Store, to Alan and Linda Sandlin leading the Marco Island Historical Society tour and Alan giving the invocation, to Carrie keeping a thousand details together and somehow making it look easy. Special congratulations go to Past Commodore and FCYC Director Ray Rosenberg, who had been working tirelessly on this event for at least the last six months, and who must have set a new personal record for number of emails sent! Ray was in constant communication with the FCYC Bridge on a host of issues. Ray fought to get the FCYC meal cost limit raised so that Chef Jono could work his magic properly. He designed interesting activities for Saturday morning, he booked the musicians, he coordinated menus and ordered printing and kept track of a myriad of important details, conducting the entire orchestra to produce a masterwork of an event! I personally heard many attendees rave about the meals which Chef Jono produced, particularly the International Buffet on Friday, and the divine short ribs and crab cake dinner (prefaced by a magical lobster bisque) which in the opinion of many was one of the best meals produced in any Yacht Club or restaurant in memory. Inquiries from some of the other club Commodores about whether we could possibly "loan out" Chef Jono to them were politely but firmly rejected by me...he's our Superstar, and they can't have him! The entire staff performed flawlessly, and everyone projected a real feeling of genuine warmth which cannot be counterfeited. Many of the FCYC Directors told me that there is something in the air around our Club, a feeling of real and comfortable welcome which they felt was unique in all of Florida in their experience, and very, very special. Well, they're right. There is something very special about our Club, and we know what it is: It's not the building, or the shiny new Marina...it's the dedicated staff and our amazing Members who volunteer their time to make our Club truly one of a kind. Thanks to all who made this event unforgettable!

Rear Commodore
On May 4, the Marco Island Yacht Club had a presentation from members of the Marco Island Police Department, Marine Unit. Officer Josh Ferris was to do the presentation.
Paul Soden
I had done a ride-along with Officer Ferris and found him to be thoroughly professional, really observant, very engaging and respectful in his interactions with the public. His performance, in my observation, was exactly what you want from a police officer in these times. Unfortunately, Officer Ferris had a family emergency on the night of the presentation and could not make it.
What might have been a disaster turned out to be a great success when three other officers, Lt. Matt Gallup, Sgt. Angel Casabona and Officer Bob Marvin came to the Yacht Club and filled in for Officer Ferris. They could not have been better. They were well- informed, engaging and made an excellent presentation. They answered all questions from the 60 members present, and the members were so happy they gave the MIPD a standing ovation. A truly outstanding night!! I hope to see you at the next Boaters Night November 9 th when Commissioner Rick LoCastro, our District 1 Commissioner, will discuss safety on our waterways.
Resuming Dates for Boaters Night and Sunset Cruises
• There will be no Boaters Night in June. • Boaters Night will resume on November 9. • Sunset Cruises resume on October 26. • There is also a Sunset Cruise on November 30.

Hats and Horses was a huge success with Members donning Kentucky Derby outfits to rival any show in town. The racing forms garnered $4,600 for the Mariners Fund, and the $500 winner was our own server, Donovan. The photos of the Members are on Flickr so make sure you download your picture. To view more photos from “Hats & Horses”, click on the following link which takes you to Flickr. When you get to Flickr, select “You”, then scroll down to “Albums”. Select the “Hats & Horses” album. Or you can select “Photostream” and scroll down to the pictures from Hats & Horses. Now that summer is upon us, look for the eblasts announcing upcoming events. July 1 will be our Independence Day party. Nevada Smith, our patriotic entertainer, will be on hand to salute the USA and lead the dancing. Chef Jono will prepare a picnic fare and the Harbour Room will be decked out in red, white and blue. Plans are underway for another member event in late July. Don’t forget to gather your ‘school spirit’ for Welcome Back. For those heading north, find your school sweater, cheerleading uniform or tee shirt from your favorite team to celebrate ‘Homecoming’. It’s going to be a great summer in Marco, back home or wherever your travels take you. Angela Holt, Chair Member Events Committee Angela Holt https://www.flickr.com/photos/miyc1400/.

Human Resources Committee Allow me to share some important initiatives we highlighted at our recent semi-annual membership meeting. The apt title of our report at the semi-annual meeting was: “Employees Are Our Greatest Asset.” Short staffing has been a problem for just about every employer in the hospitality industry. MIYC is no exception. We noted the labor shortage in SWFL, the 8.5 % inflation rate, the driving distance challenge for potential hires north of the bridge, the significant increase in our membership and in food/beverage demands, and the fact that we’ve not had to be overly concerned about competitive wages and benefits—until recently. We observed that there were 30 active job postings by our local competitors for jobs we were also seeking to fill. We’ve successfully addressed this challenge by invoking several strategies, such as an employee retention bonus, enhanced benefits package, employee referral bonus and a commuting bonus. And we’ve made some recent quality hires in Chef Jono , Sous Chef Brad , Dockmaster Missy , Line Cook Iseme, Receptionist Brian, Server Joey and Information Systems Analyst Zack. You will also notice the return of Server Layni, who will fill in during May-June. Please give them all a warm welcome at the Club! Come June 1, we will also be paying the promised retention bonuses to those staff who stuck with us and remained committed and loyal during the very busy season just passed. A big THANK YOU to you all! To ensure a more equitable distribution of workload and to maximize member experience and satisfaction, we are applying for some H2B visa workers for the coming season. More on that as we get closer in time. Finally, we all appreciate the patience and respect given to staff by our members this past season. It speaks volumes about the kind of Club we have and how we want to treat our “greatest asset”—our employees. Thank you. Kevin Hennessy Board of Directors Chair, HR Committee

Hydroxychloroquine – is it safe or not?
Quinine was isolated from the Chinchona Officialis tree bark in Peru. It has been used in the past for treatment of malaria. In 1825, a British Army officer in India discovered that the bitter medication was more palatable if mixed with gin and so, the gin and tonic was born. Now, this article has nothing to do with quinine but it seemed like a less dry lead-in to discuss the track record of hydroxychloroquine safety. We shan’t discuss whether or not to use it for COVID, but just the fact that it is almost as old as Methusalah. So, let’s mix a G and T with a wedge of lime and read on… You can read the entire article at David Randall https://online.flippingbook.com/view/23005428/
Reservations Please! Please remember to make your reservations for dinner and events at the Club at least two days before the event. Chef Jono and his Staff like to be prepared in order to have the right amount of food and beverage. Also, when you make your reservation for a specific time, please be prepared to be shown to your table at that time. We appreciate your help as this also helps the kitchen Staff serve you in a timely manner.

Ship‘s Store Report
Greetings from the Ship’s Store staff of Deb deVries, Ellie Everitt, Michele Niblack, Kerri Pakalnis, Joanne Chute, and Cloe Gerri. It’s the end of May and we had a successful FCYC visit from the Ship’s Store perspective. We had more sales than we expected as well as many compliments on the store itself. We had just put out new merchandise as you can see from the pictures. • The new merchandise includes, men’s and women’s polos in fun colors, men’s and womens’s windbreakers, large sailcloth totes, women’s raffia hats (men’s are on backorder), double old fashioned glasses, and red/white and navy/white striped beach towels. • Next month we will be adding caps and visors, floatable key chains, and waterproof cell phone covers. • The Store is open whenever the Club is open. • We continue to look for ways to improve the honor system. We have new forms where you can just remove the tag and tape onto the form itself! • Check out the new Marina office where Missy Duffy, the new dockmaster resides. Jeff, the Club’s fabulous maintenance man, built shelves and a hanging rod so Missy can display the Riverside Marina logoed items we offer. It looks great! • Some of you have asked me for special order items. Like everywhere, our vendors have their own challenges getting merchandise and after we get it, we have it logoed locally. I am following up on a regular basis with vendors, but feel free to call/email me if you are still waiting for a special order item and would like to know the latest status. Phone: 612-669-3379 and email:[email protected]. Thanks for your support this year! Deb deVries

There’s a Daytime Activity for Everyone at MIYC! Aquafit at MIYC Aquafit classes take place at the MIMA pool at 10:30 am on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Don't miss this opportunity to enjoy water aerobics - a low-impact activity that takes the pressure off your bones, joints and muscles. Water also offers natural resistance, which can help strengthen your muscles and you can add resistance devices to burn more calories! Exercising in the pool provides the toning and cardiovascular benefits of exercise on dry land with less strain and stress plus it allows for a greater range of motion helping with flexibility and balance. And most importantly, it is enjoyable fun! As with any other exercise routine, just be certain you get medical clearance from your health care provider before taking the plunge. Mariners Fund The Mariners Fund is a way to finance extraordinary MIYC needs; things outside of the normal budget; Club enhancements that will make the member experience better and up to date. For example, the Burgee Bar renovation was made possible entirely by member donations. The bar was expanded, new drop-down window covers were installed and attractive curtains and valances were added. The Mariners Fund also paid to upgrade the Club’s sound system and supported the installation of a new dimmer system to enhance lighting in the Harbour Room. All these improvements were made possible by the generous support of our members. A donation to the Mariners Fund is a symbol of MIYC member commitment. How Can I Donate? You can make a general donation or donate for a specific project. We have identified a number of needs and wishes, which are listed in a binder just below the recognition plaque in the lobby. If you’d like to donate, please download the Mariners Fund Donation Form, on which you can indicate the project you wish to support, the amount of donation and how you wish to pay (separate check, credit card or Club monthly statement.) If there is something special you would like to see happen and would like to financially support, please let any member of the Mariners Fund Committee know. Mariners Fund Recognition Levels A Mariners Fund recognition plaque in the lobby hallway honors the cumulative contributions Members have made. Bronze $ 500 Silver $ 2,500 Gold $10,000 Platinum $20,000 Diamond $50,000 Sapphire $100,000 Final Voyage – If you have enjoyed the Club, please consider a gift from your estate.
