Health & Fitness The Newsletter About Your Health And Caring For Your Body

“Natural Pain Relief Requires Natural Treatment! ” Improving Your Health & Fitness

When we think of poor balance, we typically think of seniors using canes or walkers to get around, because they may fall. However, poor balance is actually a big contributor to sports injuries, common backache, neck pain, and headaches in younger people. In order to walk on two feet, adapt to bumpy surfaces such as grass, quickly run, turn, recover from a trip and more, we need a finely tuned balance system at all stages of life.

Whether you are an active runner or just your average Joe, your balance systems are used thousands of times a day. Most of the common declines in balance we experience are not noticed until they are quite severe. Use it or lose it The wonderful thing about your balance system is that you can always improve it. Whether you want to get rid of ordinary aches and pains, or are a high level athlete, focusing on proper balance and postural exercises can make a dramatic difference in your overall health and function. The experts in balance Whether you need help with back pain, neck pain, headaches, knee pain or dizziness, our physical therapists will address your balance systems. “A Plank A Day Keeps The Doctors At Bay!”

A plank is a simple exercise that anyone can do to improve their core strength. This exercise helps you strengthen so many of your muscles, guiding them to work together. Your core muscles are vital to the health of your low back and spine. If you suffer from an achy back or neck, then try doing this exercise to feel better. How to do a plank (If you are unsure about doing this exercise, call us first!) 1. Start by lying face down. You may want to put a pillow under your abdomen if it is uncomfortable to lie flat. 2. Bring your elbows underneath you, then gently rise up onto your elbows and knees, so that your abdomen is off the floor. 3. Keep your abdomen tucked gently in so that your body is straight without sagging. 4. Try to hold this for 30 seconds if you can. You may feel your muscles shake a little while doing this, which means they are working! 5. It is important to start off with small increments and build over the course of a week as you become stronger. 6. To advance the plank and make it more difficult, lift your knees off

the ground, keeping your body straight. 7. Ideally, you should be able to hold this position for 2 minutes. 8. You may have some soreness the next day as you are using muscles that have not been worked that way in a while.

Kinect PT Can Help You Reach Your Fitness Goals 9 WAYS PHYSICAL THERAPY CAN HELP IMPROVE YOUR FITNESS

You have chronic back pain. You think medication will help, but your doctor recommends physical therapy. What is it, and can it really help you? Yes! It’s a high-benefit, low-risk solution to diagnose and treat many different conditions. Physical therapy helps people of all ages who have medical conditions, illnesses or injuries that limit their regular ability to move. It helps patients return to their prior level of physical functioning. 1. Reduce or eliminate pain - Hands-on therapy or treatments such as ultrasound and electrical stimulation can help relieve pain and restore muscle and joint function to reduce low back pain. Such therapies also can prevent pain from returning. 2. Avoid surgery - If physical therapy helps you eliminate pain or heal from an injury, surgery may not be needed. And even if surgery is required, you may benefit from pre-surgery physical therapy. It will allow you to recover from surgery faster because you’re stronger prior to it. 3. Improve your mobility - If you’re having trouble standing, walking or moving - no matter your age - physical therapy can help. Stretching and strengthening exercises help restore your ability to move. 4. Recover from a stroke - It’s common to lose some degree of function and movement after stroke. Physical therapy helps strengthen weakened parts of the body and improve gait and balance. 5. Recover from or prevent a sports injury - Physical therapists understand how different sports can increase your risk for specific types of injuries (such as stress fractures for distance runners). They can design appropriate recovery or prevention exercise programs for you. 6. Improve your balance and prevent falls - When you begin physical therapy, you will get screened for fall risk. If you’re at high risk for falls, therapists will provide exercises that mimic

real-life situations. Therapists also help you with exercises to improve coordination. 7. Manage diabetes and vascular conditions - As part of an overall diabetes management plan, exercise can help effectively control blood sugar. We can create an individual plan with the right combination of aerobic and strengthening exercises. 8. Manage age-related issues - As you age, you may develop arthritis or osteoporosis or need a joint replacement. Physical therapy can effectively keep older patients more mobile and fit them with the appropriate walking device if needed. 9. Manage heart and lung disease - While most patients will complete cardiac rehabilitation after a heart attack or procedure, you also may receive physical therapy if your daily functioning is affected. “Wellness Resources.” 10 Ways Physical Therapy Can Help - Lehigh Valley Health Network - A Passion For Better Medicine. “Start An Active Lifestyle By Ending That Nagging Pain! ”

Simple Exercises To Relieve Aches & Pains

Think about moving joint by joint

CHILD’S POSE Child’s Pose helps to stretch the hips, thighs, and ankles while reducing stress and fatigue. It gently relaxes the muscles on the front of the body while softly and passively stretching the muscles of the back torso. This resting pose centers, calms, and soothes the brain, making it a therapeutic posture for relieving stress. When performed with the head and torso supported, it can also help relieve back and neck pain. Sometimes used as a counter-pose to back bends, Child’s Pose restores balance and equanimity to the body. How it’s done: Kneel on the floor, buttocks over heels. Stretch arms forward far as you can. Let head and trunk sag to the floor and hang heavy. Keep buttocks over heels. Relax. Repeat 6 times. LUMBAR SEGMENTAL EXTENSION Spine extension is very important for posture and health. Since there is very little in life that we do bending backwards, taking time with exercise to move this direction can help keep our backs in balance. Ideally, every segment of the spine should move freely and easily in all directions. The real goal with good spine extension is to get the entire spine actively participating, which means the middle back has to learn how to extend – movement away from its natural curve. Practicing extension exercises also provides an opportunity to stretch and lengthen through the front of the body. In the long run this will help improve movement of the spine in all directions. How it’s done: Stand with good posture. Find a neutral spine. Bend back- wards in a very controlled manner. Think about moving joint by joint. Do not push into pain. Return to the start position. Repeat 5 times. Start
