A Look Back for Father’s Day Doing My Best as a Dad of Four Boys

F or Father’s Day, a lot of dads will receive one of many classic “dad gifts”: a pair of argyle socks, a new necktie, or a 1000-plus-page historical biography to struggle through for the next few months. But honestly, the best gift I could ever get from my four sons is the opportunity to watch as they grow up into a group of truly good people. With four boys ranging from age 10 to nearly 20, there’s so much to be proud of with my kids that it’s difficult to know just where to start. I’ll never forget any of the days that my sons came into the world, but it’s the birth of my oldest son Sam that’s absolutely burned into my memory. Of course, all my children are equally important to me, and each one’s arrival was accompanied by a flood of emotion that’s impossible to put into words, but when Sam first came along, it was the day I first became a father and my life was changed forever. Ever since we’d discovered that my wife, Kristi, was pregnant, I’d been excited to be a dad, but I don’t think the full reality of what that meant hit me until I held Sam in my arms for the first time in the hospital room. “Oh my gosh,” I thought to myself with a jolt, “I am literally responsible for every aspect of this baby’s livelihood!” When we left the hospital, the nurse impatiently watched as I wrestled with the car seat, feeling inept. Hilariously, she had to intervene and show me

how the thing worked — an inauspicious start to my days as a dad, I thought.

In the early days out in Milwaukee, I was in law school and we couldn’t afford day care. To say that money was tight would be a massive understatement. So, to pick up some extra cash, we decided to take on a paper route. Just picture infant Sam strapped in the backseat of our dinky old Honda Accord sleeping peacefully, surrounded by stacks and stacks of papers at 3 o’clock in the morning. Later on, Sam was followed by Ethan, Alex, and Caleb, and each of the boys got into sports. Despite his small size, Ethan got into wrestling his freshman year, and though he won probably only a single match his first season, he decided to stick with it all the way through high school. He was determined to get on the “Tough Club” wall for wrestlers who’d never missed a single meet or practice throughout their entire tenure on the team. Not long after, Ethan joined the volleyball team and quickly became passionate in the sport, working hard to build his athleticism and skill on the court. My third son, Alex, is about to go into high school in a couple months and is trying to figure out which sport he’d like to pursue. So far, he’s thinking cross-country. And my 10-year-old Caleb

is still figuring himself out, duking it out in pickup basketball and football games with his buddies.

It’s always cool to see their moments of glory both in and out of sports, the little things that pile up and make me think that just maybe we’re doing something right with these kids. My oldest is getting back from his mission in Ecuador, and my 17-year-old is gearing up to go on his own mission in a few years. All of the kids like to battle and bicker and argue, but they also look out for each other and make a point to hang out every once in a while. And though there are definitely times when I just want to bonk them on the head, they’re all great kids. They don’t get into trouble, they do their best to make good choices, and they’re all driven in their own ways. Honestly,

for Father’s Day, I couldn’t ask for anything more.

A Nose for Trouble Ringo the Tabby Saves His Family

R ay and Carol Steiner found Ringo, a red tabby Manx, living in a shed when he was 10 days old. Despite already having three cats, the couple decided to open their hearts to the friendly feline — a decision that would one day save their lives. Years after adopting Ringo, Ray and Carol began to oversleep and experience high blood pressure, dizziness, and headaches. The couple attributed these troubling symptoms to their recent health problems — Ray had just undergone heart surgery, and Carol was recovering from a car accident with her leg in a cast. But Ringo realized something was amiss.

One blistering day in August, the usually mellow cat caused a ruckus. He meowed loudly and banged his body against the front door. Carol let him dart outside, but the moment she closed the door, Ringo began to aggressively meow again. This was unusual behavior, and Carol realized Ringo wanted her to follow him. The red tabby brought Carol around to the side of the house, where large bushes hid the air conditioner and gas and water meters. Ringo started to dig in the jagged lava-rock landscaping, cutting his paws on the sharp stones. When Carol leaned over to get a better look, she was nearly overwhelmed by the smell of natural gas.

Ray and Carol’s doctor told them that even if they avoided an explosion, they would have died from methane poisoning if they’d been exposed much longer. The gas meter did not register the leak, but Ringo did. Once they aired out their home, the Steiners’ health improved immensely. Because of his dedication to his family, Ringo became the 11th cat in history to be awarded the American Humane Association’s national William O. Stillman Award for bravery.

3 High-Stakes Divorces From the Past

On the cover of nearly every celebrity tabloid magazine, you’re sure to see some dramatic, high-profile celebrity divorces. Often, millions of dollars, not to mention intense feelings, are at stake in these settlements, but I think it’s safe to say that a breakup between, say, Chris Pratt and Anna Faris isn’t about to start any literal wars. Not so with these divorces from history, where the stakes of a split reached heights far beyond “who gets which mansion.” CHARLEMAGNE AND DESIDERATA In 770 A.D., Charlemagne, King of the Franks, married Desiderata, the daughter of the Lombards, a key enemy of his people. The goal was to form a truce between the battling groups, but unfortunately, Charlemagne quickly grew to dislike Desiderata, and sent her packing back to her family after only a

year. This souring of relations between the two parties, coupled with Charlemagne’s sister-in- law fleeing to the Lombards, resulted in the war of 774. Charlemagne’s victory in the conflict laid the foundation for the Holy Roman Empire. KING HENRY VIII AND CATHERINE OF ARAGON It’s the classic tale of old-school political intrigue: King Henry VIII grew tired of his wife Catherine of Aragon after she failed to bear any male heirs to the throne, instead opting for the young and beautiful Anne Boleyn. When the Catholic church, headed by Pope Clement VII, refused to annul the marriage, Henry broke with Rome altogether and declared himself the head of the brand-new Church of England. Later, Boleyn was convicted of treason and a whole mess of other offenses, and was beheaded. Ironically, Henry’s Church of England

soon came out strongly against divorce, forbidding it in any circumstance. JULIUS CAESAR AND POMPEIA This historical divorce has perhaps the goofiest lead-up, but it still managed to sever a legendary couple. Way back in 62 B.C., Caesar’s wife, Pompeia, threw a wild, women-only, religious shindig at her home, to which only vestal virgins were permitted access. But a troublemaker politician known as Publius Clodius Pulcher snuck in dressed as a woman — apparently with the intent of seducing Pompeia. When he was discovered, a scandal broke out across Rome, with everyone wondering whether he’d succeeded in his dastardly goal. Though nothing had happened (probably), Caesar divorced his wife with the famous statement, “Caesar’s wife must be above suspicion.”

Father’s Day Chili Lime Chicken Wings

ingredients This Father’s Day, spice up your wings with this zesty recipe that’s sure to please the whole family.

• 1 lime, halved • Extra-virgin olive oil • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper • Chopped cilantro for garnish

• 4 pounds chicken wings • 1 stick unsalted butter, softened • 1 1/4 tablespoons Thai red curry paste • 1/4 cup honey • 1/4 cup soy sauce instructions 1. Heat oven to 425 F. 2. Rinse wings under cold water and pat dry. Season liberally with salt and pepper, and drizzle with olive oil. Roast on a baking sheet for 25 minutes or until skin becomes crisp and brown.

3. Blend butter, red curry paste, honey, and soy sauce in a large mixing bowl. 4. Toss wings in butter mixture. Squeeze lime juice on top, transfer to serving plate, and garnish with cilantro.
