Instead of carrying a backpack full of books, binders, and papers, everything is stored on my tablet. So far, it’s much easier to send and receive information from clients, prosecutors, and the court with the device I can hold in my hands. I’m able to collaborate with clients more efficiently and leave a smaller environmental footprint. You might have benefited from the transition as well. Whether you're filling out forms or viewing important documents we share with you, you're always in the loop. If they need to fill out a form, they can go to their emails and fill it out in seconds. It’s made my hearings easier as well. Instead of talking about my notes and the information they entail, I can set up a projector while I’m talking. This allows the people I’m speaking with to have a visual representation of what I’m discussing. This visual representation has come in handy since half of my court hearings are on Zoom. I can share my screen to help attendees understand the information better. It has also helped me with my in-person hearings. Technology enables me to be more prepared and comfortable with my cases. Although it was scary making this huge transition, I’m glad it happened. It’s hard to believe I spent most of my time carrying around loads of equipment and documents in a bag when now I only have to click on an app. Having an environmentally friendly firm has allowed me to serve my clients and the environment better. Now, I have the best of both worlds in the palm of my hands.

Each year around St. Patrick’s Day, I get asked to handle many DUI cases. There is always a need to be vigilant and protect people through the court process and on the road. I like to tell my clients to never leave anything up to luck; we want to put ourselves in a position that will lead to the best possible outcome. My firm has transitioned to using less paper and more technology whenever we can. This process has helped us out a ton when preparing for a case. Everything is more organized, and I can find information quicker since I don’t have to dig through piles of paper — I can just open an app. This technological shift goes along great with St. Patrick’s Day in March and Earth Day on April 22. My firm is trying to be as paperless as possible by using technology to exchange information, do research, and prepare for cases.

The transition to being more environmentally friendly was scary for me at first. I am very old-school, and I enjoy having paper files and keeping them with me. But I had to trust the infrastructure my firm and I put into place. So far, the transition has been amazing. I feared that technology wouldn’t perform at 100%, but it hasn’t failed me yet. I love that my colleagues, clients, and I have access to all kinds of information at the touch of our fingertips. Everything we have is stored in the cloud, and although it took some time to learn the software, it has made daily operations at the firm more efficient. It was hard for me to let go of my old habits because they were like a security blanket for me. I was so used to keeping track of everything manually rather than electronically. But there are so many benefits to having all of my files stored on my iPad.

IT’S MORE THAN JUST TIDYING UP

4 Health Benefits of Spring-Cleaning

Sunday, March 20, is the first day of spring — which means it’s time for some spring-cleaning. Did you know that cleaning is not just about tidying up a physical space? It’s also about improving overall well-being. Here's how organization and cleanliness can help you in more ways than you might expect. Spring-cleaning reduces stress and depression. Tidiness and mental health are actually connected. Studies have found that having a clean home is directly correlated to happiness and your ability to focus. Anxiety can spike when laundry is piling up, items are strewn everywhere, and papers

reduce the spread of germs. By keeping household surfaces clean, we help thwart the spread of viruses and illnesses. Spring-cleaning helps you breathe better. Spring often brings pollen that triggers allergies for many. But pollen isn't the only thing to blame when people have difficulty breathing. When dust and pet dander build up in your home, your respiratory system is greatly affected too. Deep-cleaning your air filters and vents can make breathing effortless — and it’s truly amazing how this can improve your well-being. It keeps you more active. Off the couch and on your feet! Even just running the vacuum and clearing the clutter from the dining room table will get you up and moving, which is healthy for your heart and body. This spring season, putting some elbow grease into your cleaning will benefit you in more ways than one. Trust me, you’ll thank yourself later!

get scattered on various surfaces within the home. Clearing the clutter is a great way to boost your mood and increase those feel-good hormones. It prevents illnesses. Doorknobs, refrigerator handles, light switches, countertops, and remote controls are all things we touch many times a day. Cleaning anything that’s used often is one way to

WHAT IS A DIVERSION

And How Can It Help You With a Misdemeanor?

What offenses are covered?

In January 2021, a new law went into effect allowing diversion on misdemeanor cases. You can complete specific tasks and take classes for a period of time to get your case dismissed, avoid jail time, and have the crime off your personal record. We are now using this powerful tool to serve our clients better, but what exactly is it? What is a low-level misdemeanor diversion? All nonviolent misdemeanors are placed under this category. If you complete the required drug treatment or other courses, your charges will be resolved. If you chose diversion, the court would assign a treatment list to you. When taking this route, you will waive your right to a speedy trial, since there is a specific time frame you must follow to complete the treatment list. What type of treatment is included? This treatment list includes drug treatment, alcohol treatment, victim restitution, and probation. If you successfully complete your tasks, your charges will be dismissed and sealed. If you fail to complete your tasks, your case will resume.

The offenses that can be diverted with treatment are possession of toxic or controlled substances, public intoxication, possession of drug paraphernalia, unlawful possession of prescription sedatives, and possession of illegal substances. Who is eligible? If you’re a first-time offender or you haven’t been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony in five years, you can enroll in this diversion program. You also cannot have any current charge of a crime of violence. There also can be no evidence of your participating in a more serious offense. In order to be eligible for a diversion, you have to meet all of these conditions. This is a new tool in our toolbox that can help you with your misdemeanor case. If you have any questions about this new law, allow your friends at the Law Office of Mark Rosenfeld to assist you. We will be happy to look at your case and your current personal record to see if diversion would work best for you and your current situation.

But I Wasn’t Drinking, Officer!

You Can Receive A DUI for Consuming Drugs

When most people think of a DUI offense, they think of alcohol consumption, but not all DUI cases have to involve alcohol. You can be charged with driving under the influence if you have consumed drugs while behind the wheel of a vehicle. This goes for illegal drugs as well as prescription drugs. In Los Angeles, we have seen an increasing number of DUI drug prosecutions involving prescription and illegal drugs. Here is everything you need to know about DUI that involves drug consumption. What makes consuming drugs a DUI? Driving under the influence includes any substance that affects your vision, hearing, speech, judgment, and coordination. Drugs can affect these regular facilities once they are consumed and can impair your driving skills. Some people think you cannot be charged with a drug DUI if you have a prescription, but that’s not the case. DUI charges can still apply to you even with a valid prescription. What are the most common drugs? Medications used to treat anxiety, depression, and panic attacks are the common prescriptions law enforcement officers see in a DUI. Other common prescription drugs include

fentanyl, morphine, Xanax, and OxyContin. In addition, if you are under the influence of LSD, marijuana, methamphetamines, or cocaine, you will also be charged with a DUI. How do you test for a drug DUI?

Blood alcohol content tests are used for DUI cases involving alcohol, but they cannot be used in a drug DUI. Instead, a law enforcement officer can administer either a blood or urine test to determine if you were driving with drugs in your system. They can also conduct field sobriety tests that assess your balance and coordination. This can include walking in a straight line, checking your eye coordination, and balancing on one foot. If you have recently been charged with a drug DUI, allow your friends at the Law Office of Mark Rosenfeld to assist you. We are experienced at defending these types of cases, and we will gladly use our expertise to help you during this time.

Packing Tips to Save Your Back, Wallet, and Sanity

3 Essential Packing Tips LEAVING ON A JET PLANE?

Many people are considering traveling this spring for the first time since the pandemic started. A lot has changed since 2020, but packing for vacation remains a hassle, and baggage fees haven’t gone anywhere. Here are some essential tips to keep your load as light as possible — physically and mentally. Make a list. It’s just as easy to forget things as it is to overpack. Solve both problems at once by creating a packing list in advance. Consider in detail what you’ll need, and put it in writing. As each item gets added to the suitcase, check it off. Writing everything down creates a system to prevent leaving anything behind. And when it’s all on paper, you’re more likely to notice that you probably don't need that many pairs of sandals. Use your personal item for extra storage. Airlines generally allow travelers one carry-on bag and one personal item. The dimensions allowed vary by airline, but the general

rule of thumb is that the personal item needs to fit under the seat in front of you. Don’t bring a small purse or a laptop bag when you can take a large tote or backpack. With the extra room, you can avoid checking another bag. Never check essential items. Lost luggage is the worst way to start a vacation, but it happens. If your luggage is misplaced, you probably won’t get it back that same day. So, you need to pack all essential items, like prescription medications or glasses, in your carry-on bag. Some experts even recommend tossing an extra shirt or pair of underwear in your carry-on in case your bag gets lost. You'll be glad to have them if something goes awry. Packing smart will make for a less stressful journey. You can kick back, relax, and enjoy the trip knowing that everything you need is right there in your suitcase, and everything you don’t need is safe at home.
