I Was Never a Big Fan of Reading

Until I Entered Law School

Growing up, I was not a big fan of reading. While my parents were both avid readers, and encouraged me to be one as well, it wasn’t until I entered law school that I developed my love for reading. Since March 2 is Read Across America Day, I wanted to share some books and authors that made me fall in love with reading. During winter break my first year of law school, I stumbled upon two of my parents’ books: one by Carl Hiaasen and the other by Tim Dorsey. Both of these authors write novels inspired by the bizarre happenings notorious to the Sunshine State and its “unique” habitants. They play on the “Florida Man” trend that’s going around, and it’s spot-on, too. I devoured these books within a few days — I couldn’t put them down! They have larger-than-life characters and plotlines that have several twists and turns. These books are hilarious, and for my fellow Floridians, the stories written in the book are not shocking to us because we see them all the time. After all, some of the stories were inspired by actual events. The “Florida Man” books are what made me fall in love with reading. From that point on, I craved reading more and more. Another series that I love is the “Lincoln Lawyer” series by Michael Connelly. I began reading this series when I first started practicing criminal law. My father recommended the series to me, and I’m so glad he did. This series follows Mickey Haller, a charismatic defense attorney who conducts business out of his vehicle, a Lincoln. I related to the daily grind and hustle of the main character, and I too was literally conducting business in my car the first few years out of law school. When I first started reading the “Lincoln Lawyer” novels, I thought, “Oh! Someone actually understands.”

I assumed that the author used to be a criminal lawyer since he was writing so spot-on about the experiences within criminal law. I was very impressed when I discovered that Connelly was never actually a criminal lawyer. Today, there isn’t a specific genre that I gravitate towards when picking a book to read. I tend to look for books that resonate with my interests. I sometimes like to read lawyer books, but I also love to read biographies about the celebrities I like. I just finished reading “The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music” by Dave Grohl. Grohl is the lead singer and guitarist for the rock band Foo Fighters, and he was also the drummer for grunge legend Nirvana. I enjoyed reading his memoir and learning about his early life and the worldwide adventures he’s taken. I also like to read books that my wife shares with me from her book club. She has provided me with some fantastic books of different genres. I hope to join or create my own book club one day when my schedule is more flexible. Although I am very busy, I like to read parts of a book every night before bed or whenever I have some free time. I love getting lost in the pages of a book. I enjoy envisioning the characters and the storyline in my head — the books are far better than the movies! Although I may not have the time to create a book club, I’m occasionally going to use this newsletter to showcase some of my favorite books with you. Who knows, maybe you’ll find your next favorite book!

Spring Fever

Enjoy Warm Weather While Stuck Indoors

The weather is warming up, the sun is out — and you’re trapped inside. Most of us have jobs that leave us stuck indoors during spring’s prime midday hours, and it’s easy to feel like you’re missing out on the season’s best parts. Unfortunately, your boss probably won’t give you the day off just because of the gorgeous weather. So, we’ve compiled the next best thing — some tips to enjoy the season as much as you can while also getting your job done. Bring the outdoors in. When the weather is nice, open as many curtains and blinds as possible. The natural light will warm up the room and brighten your mood. While you’re at it, try opening the windows and positioning yourself near one. If you can’t be outside, the spring breeze on your face is the next best thing. Plants decrease stress, and having them on your desk might also trick your brain into feeling less cooped up.

outdoors. Use your break for an outdoor stroll; if possible, you can also walk or bike to work. At the very least, park farther away to give yourself time to enjoy the weather. Volunteer to do a coffee run, pick up lunch, or take out the mail — you’ll be an office hero while catching some rays at the same time. Try working outside. If your boss will allow it, there’s probably some opportunity to do a bit of work outdoors. Meetings and conference calls might offer your best option. For in-person meetings, your coworkers will also likely relish a chance to take it outdoors. In the event of a conference call, you won’t need to convince anyone else — grab your laptop and go! It’s not the same as enjoying the weather while you’re off the clock, but it’s a lot better than being cooped up inside. With any luck, these tips will help you make it to Friday with your sanity intact. And luckily, the weekend is always just around the corner.

Take a break. You’ve still got to work, but that doesn’t mean you can’t sneak in a few minutes

CAN PRESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS LEAD TO A DUI CHARGE? When you think about a DUI, you probably assume the driver had consumed alcohol. But did you know that in Florida, you can be arrested and charged with a DUI if you’re under the influence of prescription drugs? Although DUI cases involving prescription drugs are sometimes more difficult to prosecute, the penalties can be the same as a drinking and driving case. Here are some commonly asked questions about DUI cases involving prescription drugs. How can prescription drugs impair your driving? In Florida, a DUI is considered driving under the influence of a substance that affects your regular faculties, and symptoms of prescription and over-the-counter drug usage are impaired vision, hearing, speech, judgment, and coordination as well as drowsiness and nausea. All of these symptoms can affect your driving skills and could be the reason you cause an accident. If you have a valid prescription for your medical needs, DUI charges can still apply to you. If you don’t have a valid prescription from your medical provider, you could be charged with drug possession. What prescription drug can impair your driving? Most drug-related DUI cases involve painkillers and medications used to treat anxiety, depression, and panic attacks. Some of the most common medications seen within a drug-related DUI case include Vicodin, OxyContin, codeine, fentanyl, morphine, Valium, and Xanax.

Can a breath analysis test be used? For the most part, prescription drugs will not register on a breath analysis test. Instead, a law enforcement officer can use a field sobriety test to help them determine if you are driving under the influence. This test includes assessing your balance and coordination. In more severe cases, police officers can use a urine test or a blood test to see if there are any drugs in your system. These tests are often used if there is a serious injury or death. Have you been charged with a DUI concerning prescription drugs? The Law Offices of Matthew Konecky can look at your case and see how long the drugs were in your body and how the police handled your arrest. We have the resources to fight these sorts of prescription drug DUI cases. Call us with any questions or concerns regarding your case.

Create a Keepsake for Good Luck Year Round

Make a 4-Leaf Clover Keepsake But Find the Elusive Good-Luck Charm First

One of St. Patrick’s Day’s most popular symbols is a four-leaf clover. In Ireland, these clovers represent luck and good fortune. Each leaf on the clover has a different meaning — faith, hope, love, and success. It’s a tradition to find a four-leaf clover on St. Patrick’s Day and do activities involving this lucky leaf. So, how do you find these good-luck charms, and what can you do with them? How to Find a 4-Leaf Clover Although it may seem difficult, it’s easier than you might think. First, find a dense patch of white clover — near it is where four-leaf clovers reside. They are different from the rest and are often smaller, so keep that in mind when you look for the lucky green clovers. Instead of staring at the patch in close detail and counting leaves, search the patch without focusing on the tiny details. This increases the odds of eyeing a four-leaf clover because the different patterns, shapes, and sizes of these

clovers will jump out at you. If you find one, keep looking! There’s a chance another one might be nearby.

Clover Craft Once you find your clover, preserve the luck in it all year by placing it in a picture frame. First, gently press the clover leaves between the pages of a large book for several days to flatten them out. After pressing, you can add green food coloring to your clover to enhance its color. Once it’s dry, clean it and let it sit overnight. Then, place your clover onto acid-free paper, cut to fit the size of a picture frame of your choice. Next, use acid-free glue to keep your clover in place, and finally, seal your frame shut. You now have your personal good luck charm! Searching for a four-leaf clover and creating a keepsake will be a great bonding experience for you and your family. We wish you luck! Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
