THE VIRTUES OF A FATHER
How My Father Made Me an Old-Fashioned Dad
the pursuit of his just causes, my father personifies strong work ethic and integrity.
have too much reality TV doing nothing more than glorifying the things that cause many of society’s own problems. We have actors playing the roles of counselor on national TV with scripts that do nothing more than glorify dysfunction for humor. We don’t see shows like “The Waltons” anymore. Society doesn’t seem to make much time for old-school virtues. “MY DAD IS THE VIRTUOUS TYPE OF OLD-SCHOOL PARENT ALL CHILDREN SHOULD HAVE.” This is what it comes down to: Make all the sacrifices you can for your family, be there for them in their times of need, spend quality time together as often as you can, provide them with leadership, and most importantly, be a good example. One of the best things a parent can do is teach their children by example, not by instruction. The lessons I’ve learned from my parents’ example are woven into the fabric of my identity. Their qualities and virtues have made me a better father, husband, friend, lawyer, and just a better all-around person. Happy Father’s Day to my amazing father and to all the fathers in the world! Your leadership and contributions are everlasting, and we honor parents like you every day!
As a self-employed entrepreneur and real estate investor, my father often worked around the clock and weekends, too. But even while burning the candle at both ends, he always made time for his family. If my brother and I had sports games or school events, he’d always be there. Even now, my parents actively attend academic and extracurricular events and activities for their grandchildren. My dad is the virtuous type of old-school parent all children should have. It’s not that fathers nowadays don’t love their kids or do a good job. I just respect the way my dad and his generation instills virtues and responds “head on” to adversity without making excuses. The world doesn’t become an easier place when parents make excuses. I work with clients every day who have pain dealt to them in ways most of us can’t imagine. Often times, they contributed to their own pain and didn’t even know it. Sometimes they even made excuses why they did. They didn’t know yesterday’s thoughts and actions would cause tomorrow’s pain and problems. They didn’t understand the consequences, and even if they did, they didn’t think they would get caught. They didn’t realize their own pain would be shouldered by the ones who cared for them the most. So what does it take to be an old-fashioned dad? It’s simply spoken, but only the “crème de la crème” can carry out this old-school philosophy. It’s a way of life, a choice made early on. Nowadays we
I ’ve been blessed to grow up with such a wonderful family, both immediate and extended. I am very close to my mother and father, and they share a close relationship with me. I speak with them both at least twice every day — in the morning and evening, and usually a few times in between. It’s been this way ever since I can remember. It doesn’t take a family-law guru to convince anyone that not all parents are created equal, and that’s why I am truly blessed and thankful for mine. My parents have an amazing partnership. Both of my parents were always present for my brother and me, and they made their presence known every step of the way. It meant a lot to me then, and it means even more to me now. Dad is the captain of the ship! His crew is his family, both immediate and extended, as well as his friends. Each voyage is filled with good cause, no matter the destination. Whether it’s family, business, politics, or

The Perfect Camp-Cooking Pair
Camping doesn’t have to mean settling for prepackaged snacks, dehydrated meals, and boring hot dogs. In fact, cooking during your camping trip can be fun, easy, and incredibly tasty. One of the simplest ways to prepare camp meals is with a Dutch oven and charcoal. Like crockpots, Dutch oven meals require very little work and dirty few dishes. Best of all, you can add an endless variety of food to your camp menu! The briquettes around the Dutch oven provide long- lasting and consistent heat distribution. The number of briquettes you use depends on the size of your Dutch oven and what you’re cooking. However, you can use the following chart as a rule of thumb to
them beneath and on top of your oven. Each briquette adds 10–20 degrees of heat.

For breakfast, prepare a hash with bacon, eggs, onions, potatoes, cheese, salt, and pepper. For lunch, try cooking campfire nachos with tortilla chips, ground beef, beans, onions, cilantro, cheese, and avocado. And for dinner, butterfly your freshly caught trout and bake it with some potatoes and butter. Cooking while camping should be an enjoyable experience. Pack a Dutch oven and charcoal briquettes the next time you’re out in the wilderness to add a fun and rustic element to your meals.

CHILD SUPPORT AND
Uncovered Medical Expenses
Child-support orders usually assign both parents the responsibility of paying for their child’s uncovered medical expenses. In most cases, there is a temporary order or final judgment that requires both parents to pay a portion of the child’s medical, vision, and dental bills that are not covered by insurance. If you are pursuing child-support enforcement to force the other parent to pay their share of your child’s copays, deductibles, and out-of-pocket medical expenses, you must show the court the following: • The existence of a valid court order stating the obligation to pay for uncovered medical expenses • The other parent’s noncompliance with the court order after having had the opportunity to comply • The other parent’s financial ability to comply A valid court order can be a temporary order or final judgment that imposes an obligation upon both parents to share the responsibility of medical expenses not paid for by health insurance. The court usually apportions responsibility for payment of a child’s uncovered medical expenses in accordance with each parent’s percentage of the combined net monthly income.
In order to be reimbursed, you must notify your co-parent of their obligation to pay for your child’s uncovered medical expenses as well as the expenses consistent with the requirements of the court order. If you are the parent who took the child to the doctor and paid a copay, it is your responsibility to notify your co-parent of this payment in writing. Your co-parent will then have a limited time to pay their share of the bill in accordance with the order or judgment. You must be prepared to defend against the other party’s claim that they never received a copy of the bill. Draft a letter as a request for payment. When you send a copy of the bill, send your letter with it. Send your letter by email or fax and keep a copy of it. Respectfully request that the other party comply within the time frame provided for in your final judgment. If you have been unsuccessful in attempts to receive payments from your co-parent, you should consult with an attorney. To strengthen your case, make sure to retain copies of all your child’s medical bills as well as the letters you sent to your co- parent requesting payment. These copies will become evidence of your co-parent’s noncompliance and will help you obtain the relief you need from the court. With the advice of an experienced attorney, you can hold your co-parent accountable for their obligation to pay their share of your child’s uncovered medical expenses.

“JACKSONVILLE’S ATTORNEY AT LAW.”
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE DEFENSE
Florida law states that domestic violence can be actionable as both a criminal offense and as a civil tort. Domestic violence has both criminal and civil ramifications that can be rather severe. Once law enforcement is called to intervene in a domestic incident, the state is most likely going to take criminal action against the perpetrator, even if the person who claims they were victimized doesn’t want to press charges. Domestic violence charges in Florida are especially harsh — sometimes more harsh than necessary — because prosecutors are dedicated to deterring incidents of domestic violence. The advocacy of an attorney is vital to anyone facing either criminal or civil domestic violence charges. An Uphill Battle From the Start In most other criminal cases, a person is able to post bond and leave jail shortly after the arrest. However, individuals facing domestic violence charges have special conditions placed upon them once released from incarceration. Once an individual who is arrested for domestic violence is released, they are prohibited from engaging in certain conduct pending the trial or disposition of the charge. These persons typically are restricted in their ability to travel outside the county and are also prohibited from contacting the victim, even if the victim lives in the accused’s residence.
In Florida, the state attorney can proceed with charges even if the victim refuses to press charges or refuses to cooperate. In almost every case, the state has every intention of prosecuting the defendant. Those accused face an uphill battle from the start, and the exposure and stigma can unfortunately last a lifetime. A Stain on Your Record Should an individual plead guilty or no contest to a domestic violence charge, the infraction can never be sealed or expunged. This means it will stay on record indefinitely, and any time this individual applies for a job, loan, scholarship, or anything else that requires a background check, the charge will “pop up,” and so will its undesirable consequences. Those facing domestic violence charges may be ordered to complete months of counseling and will be prohibited from contacting the alleged victim.Additionally, the court could require alcohol and substance-abuse evaluation and screening as well as addiction and psychological treatment, a batterer’s intervention or anger-control program, and restitution. Someone charged with a criminal act of domestic violence may also face jail or prison time and a lifelong criminal record. If you or anyone you know has questions about civil or criminal domestic violence, please call us immediately.
