Texas Coastal Getaways Top Vacation Destinations for You and Your Family
As we’re in the heart of summer, I know many of our friends and family are eager to find some places and activities to enjoy and get out of the house. We have some fantastic destinations right in our backyard – but let’s address some of the great getaways you can take by car down to our Texas coast! Even if you’re a Dallas native, there is an assortment of coastal places that will surprise you and entertain the entire family! When I was in law school at the University of Houston, my friends and I would go to Galveston and the Tiki Island village to enjoy the beaches. Galveston used to be the gem of Texas. It was a booming port town that was the most populated in Texas until 1900 when the city was ravaged by a deadly hurricane. Today, you can still enjoy the beaches, the historic architecture, Moody Gardens, Bishops Palace, and Schlitterbahn Waterpark. However, there is nothing more simple and fun for the whole family than taking the ferry to Crystal Beach, which is just east of Galveston. The trip is free and hosts some of the best views of our state’s coastline. If you or your family loves to fish, I can’t recommend Port Aransas enough! Commonly known as “Port A” to locals, this beach town hosts several fantastic fishing locations, including Allyn’s Bight, Fina Docks, and Mud Island Point. In the various fishing destinations, you might catch mainly redfish and speckled trout! For the avid angler, go further down the coastline to find sharks, sheepshead, and black drum fish. Additionally, the entire town has great restaurants and beach bars, including Bernie’s Beach House and Irie’s Island Food, making it the perfect weekend getaway. The beach in Port A is great!
is more of a fishing town, you won’t get any of the hustle and bustle of families. From what I remember last summer, the local fish shops always had great deals on the best bait, including croakers and live shrimp. For the best fishing, be sure to check out King Fisher Beach, Barroom Bay, and the Decros Point peninsula. Checking out the beaches, eating at the best restaurants, and going fishing is fun, but if you want something a little more interactive for the kids, go crabbing! For my kids, late-night crabbing is always a hit. On any one of the beaches I’ve just mentioned, little crabs wash up on shore every night, making them easy to spot. If your kids are older, I recommend casting out nets or crab traps in any coastal area where the water has a little grass and is protected from the surf to catch blue crabs. As long as they don’t have eggs, you can keep them and boil them for dinner. To cap off your successful fishing or crabbing trip, a few local restaurants will cook your catch for you, so ask around. If you’ve ever hunted or fished yourself, you know there nothing is more satisfying than eating the fish you caught the same day.
But if you’re looking for a premier fishing area, I suggest Port O’Connor, which is near the gulf coastline north of Corpus Christi. Since the city

So, if you find yourself needing to get out of the house, take advantage of the Texas coast to brighten your family’s day!
