In a future where robots – techno sapiens – function as live-in friends/mentors/babysitters/ siblings, a young girl’s beloved machine-companion, Yang, suddenly becomes unresponsive. Her father, searching for a way to repair it, must access its internal drive – which includes snippets of memory that robots can choose to record a few seconds at a time. These ‘memories’ unfold as montages, and the impact of these sequences is profound: imagine being able to look through the eyes and memories of someone you’ve lost. ELIZABETH

2022 MARCH View 17

With 2022 marking her Platinum Jubilee , it’s safe to say that it is a big year for England’s much-loved Queen Elizabeth II (pesky family issues notwithstanding). To celebrate the occasion, Notting Hill director Roger Michell created Elizabeth: A Portrait in Parts , a touching documentary to highlight the monarch’s life and achievements over her incredible 70-year reign. The 65-year-old director – who sadly died unexpectedly in his sleep last year – was incredibly proud of what he and his talented team created, and candid about his admiration for the much-loved monarch. In his director’s statement, Michell wrote: “She is the longest-lived and longest-reigning British monarch. Ever. She is the longest-serving female head of state in the history of the world, the world’s oldest living monarch, the longest-reigning current monarch, and the oldest and longest-serving current head of state. More people dream about the Queen than any other living person.” The director was definitely speaking the truth when he said that there’s hardly anyone on the planet who hasn’t grown up with her face, her presence, her image constantly around them, “on coins and stamps and banknotes and on tea-towels and mugs and Sex Pistol record sleeves and carrier bags... images en- countered, consciously or unconsciously; many, many times a day, every day, every year, decade upon decade”. He also likened Queen Elizabeth to the iconic and mysterious Mona Lisa, “instantly recognisable, and yet elusively and per- petually unknowable. She’s more famous than The Beatles.

18 View APRIL 2022

She’s a Queen in a castle in a fairy story. Or the Queen in a hard-hat opening a recycling factory”. Michell added: “and you don’t have to be a monarchist to have the Queen in your head. All around her, time and the world swirls like a tropical typhoon: everything in the can- vas changes, absolutely everything... Except her. Elizabeth.” Although Michell dabbled in documentaries over the years (he directed Nothing Like a Dame , which featured Dames Judi Dench, Eileen Atkins, Joan Plowright and Maggie Smith discussing their careers), he was best known for his scripted features such as the aforemen- tioned blockbuster starring Julia Robert and Hugh Grant. However, his Elizabeth: A Portrait in Parts producer Kevin Loader laments the fact that his peer and friend was not as cele- brated as some in his field, even though his overall body of work was impressive. “It may be that the eclecticism of his work meant that he was often not seen as auteur,” says Loader, “but as his producer for over 30 years, and on many of his films, I can vouch for the fact that he was as detailed and creative an author as any other director I know”. Left: the newly crowned Queen Elizabeth II, with Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, June 2nd 1953. Above: The Queen, Prince Philip, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Charles, Balmoral, 1960. Right: July 10th 2012. Opening page: Queen Elizabeth II leaves Westminster Abey after her coronation, June 2nd 1953.

Loader says that the decision to make the director’s final work was in part driven by the global pandemic, explaining that when Covid-19 rendered the pair’s chance of shoot- ing their next drama more than slightly prob- lematic, Michell rang him and said: “let’s make an archive documentary – we can do that during these months when other things look impossible.” They agreed to send “some possible subjects back and forward, which ranged widely from sport (cricketer Basil D’O- liviera?) to music (late singer-songwriter Nick Drake?) to huge historical figures. “But top of Roger’s list was always our Queen”. Loader admits he was initially sceptical: How to find an approach that was nothing like the plethora of royal documentaries we’ve all seen before, ones that turn up regularly on television, even more so as the Platinum Jubilee looms into focus? “But Roger had done a lot of thinking – and with his customary, passionate twinkle, he told me what he had in mind. He sent me his director’s statement, and that is what we used to convince everyone else that this was a film we needed to make.” That statement included the following, which

2022 APRIL View 19

sums up Michell’s passion for Elizabeth as a person and as a phenomenon: “She’s a cult: like Mao, like Stalin, like Marilyn Monroe... She’s a fiction... a function of our imagination... and yet she lives. And it’s her apparent ordinariness and humility and her refusal to move with the times in her dress or her routine that makes her all the more a fixed point in a chaotic firmament. We all carry around secret versions of her in our heads. And like it or not the ‘Herness’ of her is so important. She’s our collective Mother. Everyone’s Mother looks like the Queen. She’s that special place where we can project our secret beliefs: the perfect void where anything is possible.” Loader says Michell’s second call was to top editor Joanna Crickmay, who the director trusted deeply after they worked together on There’s Nothing Like a Dame . They all agreed that what was needed next was a team of top-notch archive re- searchers/producers, preferably seasoned professionals with experience of trawling the hundreds and hundreds of hours of footage of the British royal family. They found these in the bril- liant duo of Emily Thomas and Rebecca O’Connor Thompson, researchers and archivists. Both had dealt with the key film libraries before, and also had extensive experience of the diplomatic business of obtaining re-use approvals from the BBC and the Queen’s Communications team. Crickmay and Michell started by ordering in previous docu- mentaries about the Queen, particularly those that had ob- tained intimate, behind-the-scenes access. It was through watching those that they then contacted veteran film-makers Edward Mirzoeff and John Bridcut, both of whom were gener- ous with their time and insight and officially joined the team as highly valuable consultants. “Roger’s idea was always to organise the film in chapters or parts,” explains Loader, “and slowly the archive, like a chaotic cooling universe, began to be attracted to its rightful place in the film. In the end we had more chapters than space, and we played around with the order for a while, but what we have now is what Roger and we agreed was the best journey through the incredible life and times of Elizabeth.” The director finished the final day of the final sound mix of the film on the day he died, so his team of artists and experts can with confidence say that the end result is the film as finished by him. “And we’re all proud to have been part of it,” says Loader. “Roger literally finished this last film the day before he left us. His film contains all his trademark emotion and playfulness, combined with a proper search for truthful insight into the woman who was Queen when most of us were born, and still is.” A celebration, but without judgement or voice-over or debate or talking heads or commentary, Michell wanted his film to be a “truly cinematic mystery-tour up and down the decades: poetic, funny, disobedient, ungovernable, affectionate, inappropriate, mischievous, in awe. The Queen as never before.” And indeed it is.

Colin Farrell as harpooner Henry Drax.

The North Water stars Jack O’Connell and Colin Farrell in two of their most challenging roles yet. Written & directed by acclaimed filmmaker Andrew Haigh, based on IanMcGuire’s book of the same name, the five-part series is signifi- cantly more physical than most BBC period dramas. The unremitting demands of the pro- duction pushed its A-list cast to cold, physical extremes as it follows the ill-starred voyage of the whaling ship, Volunteer , in 1859. Stephen Graham’s pragmatic Captain Brownlee and crew – Farrell’s monstrous harpooner Henry Drax and Jack O’Connell’s laudanum-addicted surgeon Patrick Sumner among them – are sent into Arctic waters by a whaling magnate scheming to escape a dying industry. They know their mission will be dirty, bloody and poorly paid, and as the drama rolls out the sense of desperation is palpable in almost every scene. Much of the shoot took place north of Sval- bard – a Norwegian archipelago between mainland Norway and the North Pole, and one of the world’s northernmost inhabited areas – with the cast and crew working en- tirely offshore in the Arctic Ocean. Director Andrew Haigh says, “McGuire’s novel vividly

evokes the brutal beauty of the Arctic envi- ronment and I knew I had to try and bring a similar realism to the show. Despite the obvi- ous challenges, shooting in the Arctic seemed the very best option. I wanted us to feel the biting wind, the bitter cold. I wanted to cap- ture that fear that comes from being so far from civilisation.” Jack O’Connell’s Patrick Sumner impulsively takes the job aboard the ship with little knowl- edge of the true nature of the expedition, his addiction and personal challenges exacer- bating his despair as the journey rolls on. The actor himself was well aware of the potential risks of the shoot however, saying “we knew that it was going to be dangerous. There’s no way of completely eradicating danger. We had no signal, no internet. Everyone subscribed to it because of the personal challenges”. The cast were aboard an old-school sailing ship, the Activ , which they renamed the Volunteer . “It was a tight space so any negativity would have been potentially more contagious,” says O’Connell, adding to the sense of unpre- dictability that surrounded the shoot. The brutal location also proved to be a bonus for O’Connell and the crew however, “the

highlight was when we encountered wildlife in its natural form. Seeing polar bears cutting about”. One night a polar bear came right up to the ship, “when it was like three in the morn- ing and we all had to be up at seven. I’ll quote Colin. He was up watching this bear and a couple of us were on the stern, and he said: ‘Look man, you can’t go to bed while this is happening.’ The chances are that we’ll never experience that again”. Farrell’s character of Drax is a harpooner who can kill a whale with machine-like efficiency and balletic grace. Hardheaded, physically imposing and devoid of empathy, Drax is a man who exists to sate the urges he feels, and Farrell’s physical transformation into a hulking brute of a man is nothing short of extraordi- nary. Like O’Connell, he was well aware of the perilous nature of their time shooting in the Artic, saying “I did feel that death was just around the corner at any given time, that we were just one mistake away from someone falling into the Arctic sea and either very quickly getting hypothermia or sinking under the weight of the waterlogged cos- tume. It was a very profound experience for us all to share”.

“I WANTED US TO FEEL THE BITING WIND, THE BITTER COLD. I WANTED TO CAPTURE THAT FEAR THAT COMES FROM BEING SO FAR FROM CIVILISATION.”

“ENGAGING WITH THE BRUTALITY OF THE ENVIRONMENT WAS A NON- NEGOTIABLE.”

None of the cast or crew had been up to that part of the world before, with the actor adding “we were all seeing it with child’s eyes. We all went through whatever we went through individ- ually, missing our children, our lovers, our wives or husbands, because we had no communication, no email... it’s only three or four weeks but three or four weeks in a world in which we’re so used to having such accessibility at our fingertips.” The Irish actor leaned into the challenging environment, saying that it “did so much, it instantly created a sense of tension and pressure. Your body, physiologically, is responding in a way and with an aggression that my body has never responded to the environment with before, because it’s never been in an envi- ronment like that. Even that, instantly, whether you like it or not, removes you from what is familiar in your reality”. Writer and director Haigh says that engaging with the brutality of the environment was a non-negotiable after reading the book. “Most people do not shoot these kinds of things in the real environment, but for me it was fundamentally important,” says Haigh. “I didn’t really want to do it if I couldn’t do that. I wanted it to feel authentic and real, and to do that, I needed to shoot in the Arctic.” Twenty-four hours away from land at some points, and locked in the sea ice, was “sometimes terrifying” says the director. “Luckily, we had a bunch of crew and actors who also thought this was exciting, so we could all do it together. I was terrified. I think we all were. None of us really knew what to expect.”

Enter a charming, traditionalist, albeit troubled man, who himself is searching for a sense of worth and belonging. Dark, spirited and funny, this is a fascinatingly personal comment on the price of modern feminism. Written & directed by, and starring, Billie Piper. David Thewlis, Lily James and NZ’s Kerry Fox.

RIALTO CHANNEL DOCUMENTARY SPECIAL BEYOND BELIEF

THE PAINTER AND THE THIEF A young Czech artist has her two most valuable, large- format paintings stolen in broad daylight from an art gallery in Oslo. Desperate for answers, she is presented with an unusual opportunity to reach out to one of the men involved in the heist – a Norwegian career criminal. The artist invites the thief to sit for a portrait, and the story is documented by filmmaker Benjamin Ree, who captures the unlikely relationship that grows between them as the equally damaged duo find common ground and form an inseparable bond through their mutual affinity for art. 21st NEW ZEALAND TELEVISION PREMIERES, 8:30PM, THURSDAYS IN APRIL  CLICK TO SEE MORE

ASSASSINS The audacious murder of the brother of North Korea’s Supreme Leader, Kim Jong-un, in a crowded Malaysian airport sparked a worldwide media frenzy. At the centre of the investigation are two young women who are either cold-blooded killers or unwitting pawns in a political assassination. This documentary goes beyond the headlines to question every angle of this case, from human trafficking to geo-political espionage to the secretive dynamics of the North Korean dynasty. 28th SPACESHIP EARTH The true, stranger-than-fiction, adventure of eight visionaries who in 1991 spent two years quarantined inside of a self- engineered replica of Earth's ecosystem called Biosphere 2. The experiment was a worldwide phenomenon, chronicling daily existence in the face of life threatening ecological disaster, amongst growing criticism that it was nothing more than a cult. The bizarre story is both a cautionary tale and a hopeful lesson of how a group of dreamers could potentially create a new world. 14th

RIALTO CHANNEL – PREMIERES 8:30, THURSDAY 7TH  CLICK TO SEE MORE This look at competitive ‘Creative’ dog-grooming is sweet, unchallenging – and visually stunning. At the world’s biggest dog-grooming competition, entrants build corny little skits around their dog presentations, unselfconsciously baring themselves to ridicule. It seems a bit silly, but as with so many microcultures, has its own accepted ways of doing things, and everybody seems to be fully on board, the dogs included. There is a segment in which a series of people decry ‘Creative’ dog-grooming as humiliating and unnatural for dogs, and there certainly are questions about the hobby, however the film focuses on the craft itself, with plenty of warm- fuzzy closeups of poodles being brushed, trimmed, hairsprayed, airbrushed, and bedazzled.
