Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” –Martin Luther King, Jr. Over the last few months, we have all experienced strife on an unparalleled level. First the pandemic caused by COVID-19, then the protests and response to the deeper, long-standing injustices that people in our communities of color have faced for over a century. Those who’ve been on this Earth for some time are all too familiar with these injustices. As one client said to us, “We’ve seen this before, but we didn’t think younger generations would have to go through this.” While these crises threaten to pull us apart, it’s by coming together that we can begin to heal. What we need to do now is focus on our similarities rather than our differences. At the end of the day, we are all people who want to live our lives free of fear; we all want to live in a nation where our children are not persecuted because of who they are or the way they look. Just as we can work together to heal what the virus has done to us, we can work together to heal these deeper wounds and create social and racial justice. We can teach our children and their children that we are all humans and that we should be kind to everyone so that they can grow up in a world where they feel valued, no matter their differences on the outside or inside. Let’s show them a world where they feel valued and not challenged by these differences. The only way we can get through this is by working together. This moment in time is giving us the opportunity to focus on what matters in life. We can let go of what’s not adding to our life and instead focus on how we can improve our communities and the lives of those around us.

We’ve taken heart seeing our friends, clients, and community members go above and beyond to make a difference and take the opportunity to help. We heard a story from a client about their Sunday school. One of the members had an old sewing machine that had been gathering dust, so they brought it in and got everyone to make masks for people who needed them. Our friend’s mother had always dreamed of having her own dress shop. So, she finally made her dream a reality. She started the shop online and has been selling masks and taking sizes for dresses. We love hearing stories like these because it shows that we can still come together in these times and find the opportunity to give back to others in the process. Through everything, our focus has been on keeping our clients safe and making sure you are doing all right through all of this. We began offering our webinars online and sent out cards to local health care workers to thank them for all they are doing. In early summer, in the midst of the protests and the heaviness that everyone

was feeling, we hosted a virtual concert and had a professional harpist play her beautiful, calming music. It was a way to connect with our community and facilitate healing from everything that’s going on. If you don’t feel like you’ve made the impact you’d like to yet, you still have plenty of opportunities. There are churches and charitable organizations that could use your help; there are community members and organizations that you could make a world of difference for. When you think about telling your children or grandchildren about this experience, what will your story be? This will be a major moment in history. Did you have important conversations with family members? Did you stand up for what you believe in? Did you check on your community and loved ones?

You can’t go back, but you always have the opportunity to pivot and make a difference.
