The More You Know ... Education, Safety Important for Everyone

In my opinion, education is one of our most important value propositions. I don’t mean college education or anything like that — I mean a client's education about the law and the specifics of their personal injury, workers’ compensation, or other legal case. As experts in that field, I think that it’s not just our job to help people learn more, it’s our actual duty to do so. After all, these topics can be completely life-changing, and the more you know, the more power you have to make the right decisions. I know that isn’t the norm amongst attorneys in this field, and I think that’s a shame. The last thing a lawyer should be is pushy or salesy, especially with someone who’s dealing with the stress and pain of a potentially debilitating injury. And even if that person is in pretty good shape now, they’re still recovering from the mental stress of being hurt — and if you think that doesn’t take a toll, I am here to tell you that it absolutely does. At my firm, our approach has always been one of education, not sales. That’s why when you

go on our website or look at the social media associated with this firm, everything is all about knowledge. We put out videos, articles, and more without expecting a real return on that investment, because the only thing we really want to invest in is our clients themselves. And there’s no better way to do that than providing knowledge and answering questions. What about those attorneys that tend to resist this approach? Well, they simply aren’t thinking things all the way through. Educating people doesn’t mean they’ll be able to go into court without you and argue their case by themselves. Even a relatively “simple” task, like filing a brief or motion, requires the help of an attorney. When you educate people, you’re not cutting yourself out of the deal. You’re helping them make good decisions and be less afraid in general — as they say, we’re most afraid of the unknown. Why wouldn’t you want that for your clients? As some have pointed out in the past, not all of our education initiatives have to do with the law. We’re very focused on safety, and we always encourage people to engage in safe behavior. I want to help those who have been hurt by others, but I’d be happy if that never happened again, even if it cost us our jobs. Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem likely, but still, the more we can do to prevent injuries, the better. In addition, if you’re being as safe as can be and something bad still happens, in a claim or in court we can say, “Look at how safe they were. They did everything right, and there’s no way they’re at fault for any of this.” Finally, when you educate clients, they end up having more trust in their attorneys, and you cannot put a price tag on that. Trust is an essential part of the relationship. Clients who trust you are clients who will tell you the truth about a situation and give you the most resources possible to help them. And if I see that a client needs something, it’s much easier to help them access those resources if they trust me. So, what do you want to know about your workers’ compensation or personal injury situation? At Malloy Law, we don’t shy away from questions. Give us a call today and get the answers you deserve.

WORK OUT LIKE SERENA WILLIAMS

There’s nothing that says “spring” in the D.C. area more than flowering fruit trees or the National Cherry Blossom Festival that accompanies this yearly burst of color. This festival dates back to the early 1900s and the relationship between Japan and the USA. Tokugawa, the Japanese prince at the time, was long a friend to the U.S., and he gave 200 cherry trees, as a diplomatic gift, to be planted along the Potomac. NATIONAL CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL: A MARCH FAVORITE Cherry BlossomDays

GET FIT AND HAVE FUN LIKE A TENNIS PRO!

Something the U.S. government kept from the prince — and the American public — was that many of those trees had to be destroyed when it was discovered that they brought in invasive pests!

With 23 Grand Slam titles to her name alone and a total of 39 titles including mixed doubles, Serena Williams is one of the best — if not the best — tennis players of this era. However, she wasn’t born with this success nor does she coast on what she’s already done. Williams is known for having a thorough fitness routine organized by coach Patrick Mouratoglou, but unlike other athletes who swear by fad diets and complex routines, Williams keeps it simple. And you can try her routine in just three steps! 1: ADD VARIETY! Williams’ workout routine is centered on mixing it up. One day may have her running sprints to improve her speed, while other days are spent swimming to improve her lung capacity. Williams also incorporates dancing and bodyweight moves for a regimen that can be done in an apartment, hotel, or backyard! To mimic Williams, try a bunch of different routines. Find a few you enjoy and switch it up! 2: FIND FOCUS. As a tennis player, there are certain areas of her body Williams must keep in top shape. Strong, powerful legs help her lunge toward difficult volleys, and nimble agility moves ensure she doesn’t trip. In order to achieve this, Williams has designated regimens that target specific areas of her body. Mixed cardio is great to get you moving, but try to incorporate leg, abdominal, and arm-centric days into your weekly routine. The shake-up with mixed cardio will be a welcome change of pace, and your body will reap the benefits of a targeted approach. 3: DO WHAT YOU NEED AND DON’T GIVE UP. Notice how there isn’t a list of Serena Williams-verified workouts? That’s because the tennis pro doesn’t like to be confined by a societal expectation of what she “should be” doing. Instead, Williams listens to her body. She modifies her workouts when she’s injured, and she tailors her eating to her intensity level and needs. It took a lot of trial and error to discover which moves worked best for her body and how to incorporate them into her routine. So, try new things, find what works, and don’t give up!

In this fast-paced world, it can be easy to grow impatient. Things as small as waiting for a slow website to load or waiting in a long line for coffee can sometimes leave people feeling frustrated and anxious. Practicing patience helps reduce stress and helps you realize it's okay if something takes a few extra minutes. If you find yourself feeling impatient, here are a few helpful tips. With These 4 Tips IMPROVE PATIENCE AND REDUCE STRESS

Despite that slight misstep, everyone appreciated the gesture of goodwill, and a few decades later, the festival we still celebrate today was born. D.C. garden organizations gave their own gift back to Japan, including flowering dogwood trees, and the rough outline for today’s festival was established, including an opening ceremony at the Warner Theatre. In the days that follow, attendees enjoy kite-flying contests and celebrate sushi and sake, and many classes on the storied cherry tree are available. In recent years, “underground” art and music performances have become part of the tradition, adding to the original fireworks and cultural demonstrations. This year promises some of the same, including the spectacular Cherry Blossom Festival Parade, but the best way to celebrate has always been a quiet walk along the Potomac under the flowering Kwanzan and Yoshino cherry trees, and that’s where you’ll find us this month!

BREATHE DEEPLY When you feel stressed, your breathing gets shallow, which amplifies anxiety. Practicing deep breathing can help reduce stress and frustration by relaxing your body and mind. This is as simple as taking a few quiet moments to inhale through the nose, drawing your breath into the belly and lungs. Count to four to help you focus as you inhale. Then exhale slowly through your mouth. After a few repetitions, you will find that your mind and body feel calmer. SWITCH FOCUS When agitated, it’s common for our thoughts to center on the irritant. Though it may feel difficult to do when you’re stressed out, switching your focus will help you calm down and be more patient. For instance, if you find yourself growing more and more frustrated by hitting red lights as you drive, try focusing on green instead. Looking for passing cars, signs, trees, or anything that is green will help break that hyper- focus and shift it from negative to positive. Soon, those red lights will be less bothersome. MEDITATE A great way to increase your patience is by meditating, a combination of the first two tips — focus and breathing. Meditation helps people constructively manage thoughts by allowing them to practice observing their thoughts from a neutral perspective. Regular meditation can reduce stress and improve patience throughout the day. Even just 5–10 minutes of daily practice can have a tremendous impact over time. PRACTICE ACCEPTANCE While the above tips can help you improve your patience, sometimes you must simply accept that some things can’t be rushed. There will be times when we cannot control the outcome: A red light will change to green when it changes and no sooner. Learning to accept that can help people let go of their frustration, become more understanding of their situation, and greatly improve their patience.

The D.C. Area Celebrates March

Published by Newsletter Pro • www.NewsletterPro.com

Holidays All Month Long! THE D.C. AREA CELEBRATES MARCH They might call November and December the holiday season, but March has them beat by a mile. Some of these days are celebrations, some are somber acknowledgments, and some are just plain quirky.

International Women’s Day, March 8: Starting in 1909, women across the globe have gathered on March 8 to celebrate their successes and demand equal treatment under the law. This year, the official holiday organization asks, “How will you help forge a gender-equal world?” Alfred Hitchcock Day, March 12: You read right: this day is dedicated to the director of “Psycho,” “Vertigo,” “The 39 Steps,” “North by Northwest,” and other classic cinema of suspense. The origins of this holiday, and why it’s on March 12, are shrouded in mystery … just as Hitchcock would have wanted it! Pi Day, March 14: Although pie eating is a traditional part of these festivities, the holiday is actually in honor of the number pi ( π ). The first few numbers of pi (3.14159 …)

align with the date (3.14). Its origins date back to 1988, and we can thank the San Francisco Exploratorium for that! St. Patrick’s Day, March 17: This day honors the patron saint of Ireland and is a celebration of Ireland and people of Irish descent. Popularized by Irish-Americans, the annual D.C. parade has been canceled this year but will resume in 2022! World Water Day, March 22: Water, water everywhere — wait, no, we’re thinking of holidays in March! All joking aside, there is nothing more important than fresh water. That’s why the U.N. created this holiday in 1992: to make everyone aware of global populations that don’t have secure drinking water.

Maryland Day, March 25: On this day in 1634, the first European settlers arrived in what would become the state of Maryland. We started honoring this day in the early 1900s, with a ceremony at the Baltimore Courthouse every year. The celebration happens throughout the Four Rivers Heritage Area.
