REMEMBERING 9/11 ON THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY Malloy Law Offices Salutes Our First Responders

This month marks the 20-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks on 9/11. Can you believe it? In a lot of ways, it feels like only a sliver of time has gone by. I can still close my eyes and remember how it felt to be an American on Sept. 11, 2001, and especially how it felt to live in the D.C. area at that time. If you were here then, you probably remember just as well as I do how terrifying the attack on the Pentagon was. In all, 184 people lost their lives there. It still gives me chills to walk past the National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial and see the Memorial Unit benches, the symbolic crape myrtle trees, and the Age Wall. Looking back on that tragedy, I’m particularly moved by the bravery of the first responders who rushed to ground zero at the Pentagon and the World Trade Center towers in New York City that day. A lot of firefighters and police officers lost their lives in both locations trying to help others, and nothing is more selfless than that! Of course, our first responders aren’t just invaluable in times of national crisis. They also do incredible work for our community on a daily basis. First responders are the first people on the scene to help our clients who are victims of car crashes, serious workplace accidents, and other dangerous incidents. Earlier this year, my team and I found a few small ways to thank them for all of the work they do!

On Flag Day (June 14) this summer, we picked up a selection of flag-decorated cupcakes and took them over to the Bethesda Police Department for the officers to enjoy. Then, on National Smoothie Day (June 21), we grabbed a bunch of smoothies from Tropical Smoothie Cafe and delivered them to the Bethesda Fire Department. They loved the pick-me-up, and I had a great time meeting the firefighters and thanking them for their hard work. Here at Malloy Law Offices, we’re always looking for big and small ways to give back to our community. These were just a few small instances, but they felt particularly fitting considering the landmark anniversary this month. Going forward, we’ll continue to support our first responders and other organizations doing great work in the Maryland, D.C., and Virginia areas. Do you know of a local nonprofit, police or fire department, hospital, or other organization we should recognize and help going forward? If so, please let our team know next time you call, email, or stop by our office. We’d love to add them to our list of folks to thank. Call me at (202) 933-7277 or email me at [email protected].

Motor Vehicle Accidents • Workers’ Compensation • Slip and Fall • Social Security Disability • And More

Here at Malloy Law Office, we’ve spent years helping people like you with serious workplace injury cases — but did you know that we can also help with the next step in the process? If your injury was bad enough that you’re now permanently disabled and can no longer work, you may be eligible for more than just short-term financial assistance from your employer in the form of workers’ compensation. You could qualify for the lifelong safety net of Social Security Disability benefits. WHAT ARE SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY BENEFITS? Social Security Disability benefits are payments made by the Social Security Administration (SSA) to people who are permanently disabled. It makes these payments through its Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program. HOW DO I KNOW IF I QUALIFY FOR PAYMENTS? In order to receive SSD benefits, you must first have worked at a job covered by Social Security. Then, you must have a medical condition that meets the Social Security Administration’s definition of disability. Those last two qualifications differentiate SSD from a simple workers’ compensation claim. It is possible to receive both workers’ compensation benefits and SSD benefits, You Might Be Eligible for DID YOURWORKP LEAVE YOU

Every year, 40 million Americans (and even entire offices) play fantasy football, “drafting” players from across the NFL for their virtual teams and competing for money and bragging rights. Maybe you have a virtual team in the locker room as you’re reading this! But where did the concept of fantasy football start? According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, the gridiron trend began in a New York City hotel room in 1962 — a night that changed football forever. There, a group of friends led by Oakland Raiders part-owner Bill Winkenbach created the first fantasy football league. They dubbed it the Greater Oakland HOW FANTASY FOOTBALL GOT ITS START The Night That Changed Football Forever

Professional Pigskin Prognosticators League — or GOPPPL for short. Apart from the point values assigned to different accomplishments on the field, their original model wasn’t very far off from the fantasy football of today.

“The league members would ‘draft’ actual National Football League (NFL) and American Football League … players to their fantasy franchises, and on the basis of the actual performance of those players in games, the members would accrue points and compete against each other,” the encyclopedia reports.

Early fantasy football leagues were complicated undertakings. In the days before the internet, members had to agree to reference the box scores in a particular newspaper’s sports pages and “draft” their teams in the same room on long phone calls, or even via snail mail. CBS Sports began offering online fantasy football leagues in 1997, and today it’s even easier to play. The sport is built right into the NFL website (Fantasy.NFL.com), and you can join a free league or start a league of your own with a click! Whether you’re a former player or a superfan who wants to play coach for a day, fantasy is a great way to stake a personal claim in the sport and connect with friends while you do it. Check out the article “How to Play Fantasy Football: A Beginner’s Guide” on NFL.com to learn the basics. It’s updated annually, so make sure you hunt down the 2021 version! When you start, don’t forget to salute Winkenbach, the official “Father of Fantasy Sports.”

The SSA has rules around what is and isn’t considered a long-term disability. A few things almost always qualify, including cancer, musculoskeletal injuries, and nerve injuries, but there are also gray areas. The most important things to consider are whether your injury is severe, whether it keeps you from doing your current work, and whether you can do any work that will put you above the minimum income amount set by the SSA. One upside to spending more than a year at home was that many people donned their aprons, learned new recipes and techniques, and began cooking meals regularly in their own kitchens. Even as restaurants reopen, over 70% of Americans say they’ll keep their new habit of cooking at home because it’s healthier and cheaper. That said, the average American can only whip up about five meals without a recipe at hand, and many people cook and eat the same types of protein and vegetables over and over. One easy way to avoid boredom is to keep your main staples but diversify your sauce routine! When in doubt, learn one creamy sauce and one herb- or citrus-based sauce. Here are a few examples that work particularly well for chicken, America’s favorite animal protein. These can be used with your other favorite meats and your favorite vegetable preparations, as well! 5-MINUTE HONEY MUSTARD SAUCE To avoid hearing “chicken again?!” add this honey mustard sauce from PinchOfYum.com to your repertoire. Simply whisk together 1/4 cup honey, 1/4 cup mayo, 1/4 cup Dijon mustard, 1 tbsp white vinegar, and 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper for a delicious topper for all meats. SIMPLE LEMON HERB SAUCE Want a lighter, healthier option? Go for an oil-and-herb sauce like FoodNetwork.com’s “Chicken With a Lemon Herb Sauce.” In a blender or food processor, add 1 peeled clove of garlic, 1/4 tsp salt, 1 cup freshly chopped herbs of your choice (they recommend a mix of parsley and mint), 1 1/2 tsp ground pepper, the zest and juice of 1 lemon, and 1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil. Pulse all ingredients together until well mixed and the herbs and garlic are coarsely chopped. QUICK MISO MAPLE SAUCE This umami-filled sauce from Kitchn.com brings a lot of flavor with just three simple ingredients: 1/2 cup tamari or soy sauce, 1/2 cup maple syrup, and 1/4 cup miso paste. That’s it! Whisk the ingredients together and pour over oven-roasted, pan-seared, or grilled chicken and serve. These three sauces are a great place to start, but if you find yourself uninspired in the kitchen, just look up “simple sauces” online and the protein or vegetable you’re preparing. The internet will come to the rescue every time!

Watermelon Jicama Salad WITH JALAPEÑO AND LIME

Inspired by BonAppetit.com

This late-summer salad hits every flavor note and is a great way to get acquainted with jicama, a root vegetable native to Mexico that you’ve probably passed numerous times in the produce section! It’s easy to prepare (just peel and eat) and has the crispness of an apple and the satisfying starch of potato.

Ingredients • 1 3-lb seedless watermelon • 1 small jicama • 1 jalapeño pepper, thinly sliced

• 1 scallion, thinly sliced • 1/2 cup cilantro, coarsely chopped • 3 tbsp fresh lime juice • Kosher salt, to taste

Directions 1. Prepare the watermelon by removing the rind and cutting the melon into 2 1/2-by-1/2-inch sticks. 2. Peel the jicama with a vegetable peeler, then cut it into sticks the same size as the watermelon. 3. In a large bowl, combine the watermelon and jicama with jalapeño, scallion, cilantro, and lime. Sprinkle with kosher salt, toss gently to combine, taste, and adjust seasoning.

The True Story of the Word ‘Fall’

THE TRUE STORY OF THE WORD ‘FALL’

Did you know that the season of “fall” wasn’t always called fall? Back in the day when folks still used Old English, the third season of the year was known as harvest, or “hærfest,” because it was the time of year when crops were gathered, processed, and stored for winter. In the 1300s, the word “autumn” started to pop up, and then in the 1500s, “fall” became the most popular name for the season. According to Dictionary.com, “fall” held sway in England until the 1600s, when the English switched back to “autumn.” Here in America, we use both terms! As you’ve probably guessed, the name “fall” was inspired by the season’s falling leaves.

Fall technically begins on the September equinox — Wednesday, Sept. 22, this year — but for most of us, the unofficial kickoff is Labor Day weekend. Labor Day is the

Their uphill battle gave us vital protections we still enjoy today, but in recent years, Labor Day has become less about workers and more about parades and end-of- summer barbecues. This is a bit of a bummer, especially for lawyers like us who continue to fight for workers’ rights through our workers’ compensation cases! This fall, we’d encourage you to celebrate Labor Day two ways. First, enjoy some end-of-summer family fun, but also take a few minutes to read up on Labor Day (DOL.gov/General/LaborDay/History is a great place to start) and share the history with your kids. It’s movements like these that make America such a great place to live!

first Monday in September, but it doesn’t actually have anything to do with fall!

The holiday was officially created in 1894 to celebrate workers and “the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength,

prosperity, and well-being.” It came out of the American labor movement, which fought for better hours, wages, and working conditions for laborers across the country.
