A YEAR IS BETTER THAN A WEEK ! In 2016, then Governor John Hickenlooper proclaimed the week of June 13-17 as Men’s Health Week. The proclamation addressed the following points:

• Men’s Health Week will focus on a broad range of men’s health issues including heart disease, diabetes, mental health, prostate, testicular and colon cancer • Coloradans are encouraged to increase awareness of the importance of a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, and medical check-ups We at Manual Edge would like to encourage all of our patients to make men’s health awareness a year-long reality. Being involved in healthcare for 37 years has demonstrated to me that women do a much better job of taking care of themselves and seeking out medical treatment. Because men are men, often women need to firmly push their husbands or boyfriends to seek out care. I have seen too many men that didn’t seek out early treatment and paid dire consequences when their conditions deteriorated. Let’s change this pattern and take care of our men! Tim Bonack

• Despite advances in medical technology and research, men continue to live an average of five years less than women, with African-Americanmen having the lowest life expectancy • Educating the public and health care providers about the importance of a healthy lifestyle and early detection of men’s health problems will result in reducing rates of mortality from disease • Men who are educated about the value of preventative health will be more likely to participate in health screening • Fathers who maintain a healthy lifestyle are role models for their children and have happier, healthier children • Men’s Health Network worked with Congress to develop National Men’s Health Week as a special campaign to help educate men and their families about the importance of positive health attitudes and preventative health practices

Physical therapy treatments are catered toward your needs and goals!

Physical therapy is generally comprised of three important phases: pain relief, strengthening, and functional integration. Some people are apprehensive about physical therapy because they believe it will hurt them; however, the opposite is usually true. Physical therapy is aimed at pain relief and strengthening. This is achieved through several treatment services, such as ice and heat therapies, stretching, bracing, and ultrasound. An active lifestyle is also dependent upon movement. Our physical therapists will cater your treatment plan around specific movements designed to increase your strength, flexibility, balance, and overall mobility. Your physical therapist will assist you with many of these exercises, but will also provide some simple ones that can be done at home. The end goal of physical therapy is living the life you want, free from painful limitations. That can only happen when you apply the concepts you learn from your treatments to the outside world. Our physical therapists are as dedicated as you are, and will encourage you to achieve all the goals you set forth in the beginning. If you are experiencing aches and pains, our physical therapists would be more than happy to meet with you for a consultation to discuss how they can help. Call us today to talk to an expert about how we can relieve your aches and pains!

ASPIRE TOWARDAHAPPIER AND HEALTHIER LIFE TODAY

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle takes work, but once you get into the groove of it, it becomes much easier. For example, eating nutritious foods is one of the easiest ways to improve your health (although we know those sweets are hard to kick.) Physical activity is the hardest aspect to get in the habit of doing, especially if you are being held back by chronic pain. Some people try to mask their symptoms with anti-inflammatory or pain-relieving medications, while others unfortunately give up on the idea of being active altogether. Luckily, there is an alternative option: physical therapy. With the help of a physical therapist, it is possible to reclaim your pain-free, healthy lifestyle, and get back to doing the activities you love. Everyone has different needs based on the conditions of their bodies. There is no cookie-cutter approach to health and wellness, as one treatment plan may not work the same for one person as it would for another. Your physical therapist will work closely with you to evaluate your mobility, balance, range of motion, and severity of pain. Your physical goals will also be taken into account when creating your treatment plan, as well as any health risks that may be holding you back. At your initial evaluation, you may be asked to perform basic movements,

such as sitting down, standing up, walking, lifting, stretching, or other motions. Once your physical therapist has a clear picture of what you need, he or she will begin constructing a treatment plan to help relieve your pain and achieve your goals. In the end, an active lifestyle is more than possible, even if you struggle with chronic pain. If you are looking to improve your health, strength, and physical activity, look no further – Manual Edge Physiotherapy is here to help. Schedule a consultation with one of our physical therapists today and get started on your journey toward better health and wellness!

STAFF SPOTLIGHT

The complex network of bones, ligaments, tendons, and muscles in the knee joint are vulnerable. Knee pain can result from many problems, from sports injuries to arthritis to gout. And when knee arthritis or a torn knee ligament strikes, climbing stairs, walking, and even standing can be painful. Strengthening the knee is one way to prevent knee trouble and deal with a knee condition you already have. One exercise that’s simple to do is stair climbing. Stair Climbing Benefits Strengthening the muscles around the knee will decrease the stress on the joint itself. These muscles include the quadriceps at the front of the thigh and the hamstrings at the back of the thigh. Both of these large muscle groups get a workout when you climb stairs. Your own weight is enough to make stair climbing a challenge. Stair climbing also benefits the knees indirectly by helping tomanage your weight. By walking up steps for just five minutes, you can burn about 45 calories. If you do that five times per week, that’s 225 calories. Doing it 50 weeks a year can burn 11,250 calories. A pound is about 3,500 calories, so with a little stair climbing most days of the year you can lose more than three pounds. Ready for a little more math? If you’re 10 pounds overweight, you’re adding 30 to 60 pounds of additional pressure on your knees with every step. Climbing stairs can help you take pressure off the joints by burning calories and dropping pounds. If you have knee pain for any reason, don’t ignore it. Rehabilitation such as exercise can often ease the pain andmake walking enjoyable again. If your knee condition requiresmore care, see a knee specialist at Manual Edge Physiotherapy. Learn what we can do to relieve your knee pain and improve your quality of life.
