December 2020/January 2021

FOR THE LOVE OF COMMUNITY Why We’re Proud to Help Cristo Rey Jesuit

I’m proud of the work my team and I do every day. We guide people through the legal process after some of the worst days of their lives, and we provide them with a path to move forward. We have an opportunity to make a real difference in our clients’ lives, and that’s not a responsibility we take lightly. But I’ve always believed we should do more than help people in the legal arena. We may be experts in disability claims and fighting back against insurance companies, but our true line of work is people. We support people, we fight for their rights, and we honor the goals they have made for themselves and their families. That’s why we’ve stepped out of the courtroom and become so active in helping students across Texas — and, in some cases, the nation — achieve their educational goals. Longtime readers of our newsletter already know about our scholarships for students with disabilities and for veteran students or their children. Each one of their stories is powerful. We’ve met veterans who sacrificed so much for their country, children who are honoring their parents through education, and young adults who are working to make the world a better place after being dealt some of life’s most difficult circumstances. We are proud to be part of their story. However, our scholarship recipients are not the only students we’re committed to helping.

For three years now, our firm has sponsored students at Cristo Rey Jesuit in Houston. The college preparatory high school is one in a network of 35 schools across the nation that is committed to providing a rigorous and affordable education to students from low-income families. For more than a decade, our Houston-area school has been providing students with great opportunities to set the foundation for their future success. Our involvement includes hosting students for the school’s Corporate Work Study Program, where students are given the opportunity to intern within various professional settings to earn 50% of their tuition to Cristo Rey Jesuit. We sponsor students with an interest in the legal profession, and throughout their time with us, we provide them with an in-depth understanding of the complexities, highs, and lows that come with the law. We’ve been honored to sponsor multiple students through this program, and each one has become a member of our firm’s family. We

know these students are destined to create a powerful, positive impact on the world, and we’re proud to have provided our expertise and guidance along the way. As a Texas-based law firm, we believe we have a responsibility to do more than represent our clients; our community’s success is essential to our lives. Sponsoring students from Cristo Rey Jesuit, providing scholarships to students from adverse backgrounds, and supporting our community after natural disasters and through other events have become necessary to our firm’s mission and practice. Our Cristo Rey Jesuit graduates and the countless other students we assist each year continue to make us proud. We look forward to learning more about other students we can help and finding more ways to make an impact on our community. -Marc Whitehead

January is National Hobby Month — and for good reason! As people set goals for 2021, they’re also thinking about trying new hobbies. But with so many out there, picking just one can be a hobby in itself. Thanks in part to COVID-19, many people have rediscovered old-school hobbies. Some of these have been around for decades or even longer, and others have established communities that can rely on one another for support, sharing information, and more. Here are four great examples. Making Bread Over the last year, interest in this ancient hobby has skyrocketed. Homemade bread is tastier and more nutritious than store-bought, and it’s so satisfying to watch it come together. Not to mention it’s a great skill to have! With so many types of bread to try, you’re not going to run out of ideas any time soon. Collecting Cards No matter what people were into during the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s, there was a trading card game for it. And even going into 2021, that tradition has been kept alive. When many people were stuck at home last year, they rediscovered their card collections and remembered how much fun they were. As a result, card sales went through the roof, and online card communities lit up with activity from all over the world. Restoring Cars Car restoration is a hobby that lets you get your hands dirty, and it's one that you can do with your kids or grandkids. It can be not only educational for them but also fun! Together, you can track down parts, talk to folks who are also interested in restoration, and learn about the history of your car. Though car restoration can be a bit costly and time consuming, it’s certainly a journey worth taking. Embroidering Embroidery has taken off because it’s both inexpensive and fairly easy to get into. Plus, many people have fallen in love with its meditative quality. One of the great things about embroidery is that you can use it to make amazing personalized gifts, like pillows, wall hangings, and kitchen towels!
