A NOTE FROM SYLVIA

March signals the beginning of spring, a season of renewal and inspiration. As Women’s History Month, this is a time to celebrate and be inspired by the many accomplishments, struggles, and successes of inspirational women, both in Minnesota and around the country. As I reflect upon the struggles and accomplishments that shaped my path to this moment, I am filled with a sense of purpose, strength, and optimism to help shape Twin Cities PBS (TPT) as it moves into the future. I hope that my story is one of inspiration to other women – becoming TPT’s first female president in its 66-year history.

As TPT celebrates Women’s History Month, you’ll meet strong, fierce, independent and courageous women who share their stories through song, dance and the written word – those who fought for their right to vote, are re-shaping their narrative and transforming their communities. From Josephine Baker to Mae West and Dolly Parton - their stories don’t end here… their stories continue at tpt.org/womenshistory . In addition to our incredible line-up of programming, PBS Kids on TPT is introducing young viewers and families to diverse people and events from the state’s past in a new series of shorts titled: MinneHistory . As part of TPT’s effort to expand its educational offerings on the air, online and in community, these bite-sized histories will feature and highlight three “Women Pioneers,” from the nationally renown stateswoman of Minnesota, to a pioneering Indigenous legal leader and activist, and a suffragist and pioneer of medicine and women’s health.

We hope you will join us.

Best regards, Sylvia Strobel, President and CEO, Twin Cities PBS

Fast-Forward & Next Avenue Take Control of the Rest of Your Life

In the PBS documentary film Fast-Forward , premiering on TPT 2 on Wednesday, March 24 at 9 p.m. , we observe the challenges — and the revelations — experienced by four ordinary families. Each family pairs a parent age 50+ and their grown child who spend an entire week together in an “aging bootcamp.” The parent-child duos undergo tests and doctor visits, are immersed in communities of 80-somethings and have meaningful conversations about their family’s future health trajectory, caregiving and living arrangements. To say it’s a revelation is an understatement.

Fast-Forward is more than a film. It’s also a catalyst for action. Next Avenue — a website produced by Twin Cities PBS (TPT) — has produced online resources to help viewers prepare for their own futures. After viewing Fast- Forward , people might feel stuck, nervous and overwhelmed by everything they’ve learned and witnessed. That’s why Next Avenue has created a toolkit of lessons and guides to help, step-by-step, with the most essential planning. Tasks like completing an advance directive are incredibly important for adults of any age — not just older people.

Aging is not an easy topic, and taking care of yourself (or a parent) is a big job. But you can make it easier if you plan ahead with intention.

On the following four pages, learn more about the film Fast-Forward and how to utilize the complementary resources fromNext Avenue.

Major support for this program was provided by The John A. Hartford Foundation and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Fast-Forward is a Production of FLX Entertainment in Association with Twin Cities Public Television.

Susan & Sophie Sophie Woodruff, 32, is an outgoing child immigration lawyer who lives in an Airstream trailer in a suburb of New Orleans. She grew up in a single parent home. Susan Woodruff, 51, is a former nurse and caregiver in Covington, La. and is Sophie’s mother. Their relationship used to be strained but has recently improved as they have worked through issues together. Abe & Leo Abraham “Abe” Barrientos, 60, is a sensitive man with a big heart. He and his wife have multiple generations living in their Tigard, Ore. home, including Abe’s mother-in-law, 79, who is experiencing early stages of memory loss. Leandro “Leo” Barrientos, 30, is a free-spirited guy with a passion for fishing. He is a musician currently working as a server at an Italian restaurant. Carol & L’Oreal Carol Causieestko, 55, is a cosmetics sales representative in Atlanta. Carol works in beauty and fashion, and prefers to avoid any conversations about aging. L’Oreal McCollum, 35, has a degree in human sexuality, is based in Philadelphia, and is Carol’s daughter. Drey has a close relationship with his father, Roger, and often takes on the role of parent out of concern for his health.

Ellen Goodman Ellen Goodman is director of The Conversation Project, a public engagement initiative helping people talk about their wishes for end-of-life care. “The thing that people fear the most about old age is not eye surgery, or whether they are slowed up or even whether they are in a wheelchair. What they fear the worst is cognitive problems. That they will not be themselves.” Joseph Coughlin Dr. Joseph Coughlin is director of the MIT AgeLab and author of “The Longevity Economy.” His research and writing explores how global demographic change and technology are transforming business and society. “The future of care for older adults in 2045... we can’t even begin to imagine what that might be. But we can imagine what people will want.” Adriana Perez Dr. Adriana Perez is an assistant professor of nursing at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. Her research and advocacy aids healthy aging in Latinas and informs environmental policies that promote healthy aging. “Music could be a medicine just as physical activity could be a medicine, and I think we underestimate the power of the arts in keeping older adults healthy and happy and joyful.”

Take Action on Preparing For Your Future By Grace Birnstengel, Next Avenue Editor

One of the hardest parts about aging is preparing for it. That’s why most of us haven’t.

If you were to ask around, one out of three of us don’t even know who would take care of us should we need it — or have any sort of advance directive.

It’s understandable. These tasks can be difficult, daunting and emotional. Many of us put them off until it’s too late.

Still, every day is a new opportunity to change that, and that’s why Next Avenue is here.

Based at Twin Cities PBS (TPT), our team of editors and writers produce daily reporting, stories and resources on aging and what matters most in the second half of life. In tandem with the premiere of Fast-Forward , we’ve put together online courses with step-by-step instructions to help you get a plan in place for the coming years and decades of your life. Take the first step: Sign up for our email course, Assemble Your Team, at nextavenue.org/fast-forward . For seven days, we’ll break down the task of preparing for aging into smaller, more manageable parts. And once that’s done, we’ve got even more to help you.

Here’s a checklist to get you started

The Perils of Downsizing

By Jill Smolowe

A Guide to Dealing with Your Stuff

When my husband Bob and I decided to downsize from a three-story house to a three-bedroom condo, there was the inevitable deciding what would go, what would stay, what would be given away, what would be discarded.

Give away? Donate? Throw away? Save?

As we made our decisions, it became clear to me that what I found most painful to part with was my vast library of hundreds, probably thousands, of books.

In conjunction with Fast- Forward , Next Avenue has three essential guides to planning for the future, including one on dealing with life’s stuff. We offer best practices for making decisions about both the wanted and unwanted items we all accumulate over a lifetime. Visit nextavenue.org/ fast-forward

The downsizing task demanded that I reduce my library from 47 shelves (scattered in bookcases and hanging shelves over three floors) to seven shelves, all to be contained in a single bookcase in my new office.

Now in my new condo since May, I still ache when I think of all the books I ejected from my life. The absence of the presence of those books weighs heavy.

That feeling of loss has been exacerbated by the new world of Zoom. I know, you're supposed to look at the person who's talking, not the backdrop. But if there are bookshelves in the frame, that's where my gaze goes.

With longing, I gaze at the lonely single cases. The coupled double cases. The majestic ceiling-high cases. The thin cases efficiently recessed into walls.

I am not, by nature, the envious sort. But this unasked-for entry into people's homes has stirred something raw in me. When I'm on Zoom, all I can see are all those shelves with their rows upon rows of — sigh — books.

“There are so many reasons why we support TPT, but two are especially important at this time. First, we feel that trustworthy news and science programming are necessary to inform and elevate our community. Next, the quality educational programs are essential while schools are interrupted due to the pandemic. TPT is unique in responding to current societal needs while innovatively looking towards the future. This is why we have included TPT in our will.” -Allan and Helen Rossman For more information contact: Development Department at 651-229-1410 or [email protected] TPT.ORG/visionary

Black DoctoRs woRk to Build TRust in the COVID-19 Vaccine By Danielle Broadway

Black health leaders address vaccine mistrust

40-year experiment conducted by the Public Health Service on 600 Black men in rural Alabama without their consent. BIPOC communities throughout the U.S. have also endured the reprehensible — and often federally funded — practice of coerced sterilization. Starting in the early 1900s, state eugenics programs specifically targeted marginalized people, such as Latina women in California. One particular law in the 1970s led to the mass sterilization of Indigenous women on a scale tantamount to modern-day genocide. More recently, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has been accused of the forced sterilization of immigrant women in its custody. Over the past year, Black Americans and people of color have been infected and killed by COVID-19 at disproportionate rates and without the same access to high-quality health care as white communities. Considering this long history of abuse and mistreatment, it’s not surprising that marginalized communities have reported some of the lowest levels of trust in the COVID-19 vaccine.

a s the COVID-19 vaccine rollout continues across the U.S. and Congress debates a $1.9 trillion relief plan to help fund its distribution, some Americans are choosing to opt-out of vaccination. Individuals who refuse the vaccine might automatically be seen as members of the anti-vaxxer movement that ignores scientific evidence on preventative health measures. However, many vaccine skeptics have legitimate reasons to be wary, rooted in a long history of medical neglect and abuse within the U.S. health care system.

Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett, a viral immunologist at the National Institutes of Health and one of the leading scientists behind the COVID-19 vaccine, has used her platform on Twitter and Instagram to help spread awareness around the safety and efficacy of the vaccine. Corbett is one of many Black doctors and medical experts of color who are using their expertise, wisdom and experience to educate and protect their communities regarding the vaccine. These health leaders also acknowledge that the concerns of skeptical patients are entirely legitimate. Dr. Harris says the message he wants to share with BIPOC communities regarding the vaccine is one of solidarity and reassurance... Read the full article at tptoriginals.org/blackdoctors

America’s history of medical racism

Black people and people of color in America have been subjected to centuries of medical experimentation and abuse. In her book Medical Apartheid , author Harriet A. Washington details how enslaved Black Americans were used for medical experiments without their knowledge or consent, and how these practices continued long after the abolition of slavery. Other high-profile incidents include the case of Henrietta Lacks, a Black woman whose cells were stolen, and the Tuskegee Study, a highly unethical
