MP’s have said that an investigation into work place dress codes has exposed widespread discrimination against women by ‘dodgy 1970’s workplace diktats’. Nicola Thorp started a petition after she was sent home from work for refusing to wear high heels. More than 152,000 people signed the petition, which sparked a parliamentary inquiry which was debated in Parliament this week.

Following years of sexism and discrimination in the workplace, the parliamentary debate on sexist dress codes and new legislation aimed at closing the gender pay gap, and people asking about women leaders in the FTSE 100, it seemed like the UK was ready to take action and stamp out sexism from the workplace. Sadly, it seems there is still some way to go.

It’s estimated that 5 million people in the UK may be exposed to Hand Arm Vibrations System (HAVS), which can lead to permanent ill health, particularly for those who are regularly and frequently exposed to vibration as part of their working day. (Pg. 116)

The European Court of Justice has finally ruled that a Belgian employer who advised a muslim employee that she could not wear a headscarf to work was not discriminating against her religion. The claimant, Ms Achbita, had sought legal redress after her employer, G4S Secure Solutions NV, told her that wearing a headscarf would contravene its rules on neutrality when in the company of customers and subsequently amended its dress code to the effect that employees were not permitted to wear any visible symbols connected to political, philosophical or religious beliefs.

THE European Court of Justice has ruled that employers are entitled to ban workers from wearing headscarves to work. The court ruled that any ban on the ‘visible wearing of any political, philosophical or religious sign’ must be based on internal company rules requiring all employees to ‘dress neutrally’.
