HAPPY SMILE, HAPPY HEALTH THE BENEFITS OF PROPER ORAL CARE ON YOUR OVERALL HEALTH
Anyone who’s walked through the doors of Marshall Orthodontics knows the power a new smile can give to you. What they may not know is how important a healthy mouth is to their life as a whole. As we begin to understand more about oral health, we’re starting to see a direct correlation between oral hygiene and overall physical health. Taking proper care of your mouth is a goal we can all get behind. Let’s take a look at some of the ways we can live a healthier life by cleaning more regularly. The contents and general health of your mouth can say a lot about your well-being. Just by taking a look at your saliva, doctors can tell volumes about what’s happening inside your body. By taking samples from the mouth or doing a general examination,
symptoms that reveal themselves in the mouth, making routine oral examination a potentially life-saving tool. To get the most out of oral examinations, we have to treat our mouths with special care. If we neglect our oral hygiene, we could be in for a world of hurt — mentally and physically. This can happen in a number of ways. For example, plaque buildup is a common source of infection. If you’re not taking the time to brush and floss regularly, then you could be exposed to the true dangers of plaque. What starts as a discoloration of the teeth and a buildup of unattractive white film can quickly turn into a haven for bacteria. That bacteria can then lead to a serious infection of the gums known as gingivitis.
enough. That doesn’t sound like a great way to pass the time.
Plaque isn’t only a menace to your oral hygiene. Studies have shown that it can also result in a number of more serious infections. These include preterm births, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes. The current theory is that oral infection releases toxins into your bloodstream, causing these other more serious conditions. Sounds scary, right? Well, the good news is that it doesn’t have to be. Alongside regular checkups with a trusted dental professional, your chances of having any of these issues as a result of poor dental health are very slim. We’re trained to spot the signs of underlying issues, and we’re prepared to refer you to the right course of action. By working together, we can see to it that your smile stays beautiful and your body follows suit. physicians can spot the early symptoms of many systemic diseases that can affect your whole body. Bad oral hygiene can even be an indicator of dementia or Alzheimer’s. In fact, studies show that more than 90% of all systemic diseases have
If it’s not treated right away, it can turn into an even more serious infection known as periodontitis. From there, you could be looking at a mouth full of rotting teeth and gangrenous infection that could potentially be life-threatening if it gets severe

HOLD ON TIGHT! PREPARE FOR FAMILY FUN AT AN AMUSEMENT PARK THIS SUMMER
WATER COSTS HOW MUCH!? Amusement parks are expensive, and when you spend a whole day seeking thrills, you’re eventually going to need sustenance. Check the park’s rules before you leave, but most will allow your family to bring in a few snacks, like fruits or granola bars, and a reusable, empty water bottle. Many parks will have a drinking fountain near the entrance where you can fill up before exploring. If you plan to eat or drink at one of the establishments in the park, peruse the food options on the park’s website ahead of time to get an idea of what is available and how much money you should bring. Adventure awaits this summer! Don’t let a lack of preparedness keep you from enjoying a 135-year- old tradition.
On June 16, 1884, the first roller coaster in the nation opened to eager and brave participants at Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York. In the years since the first riders climbed aboard the Switchback Railway 135 years ago, roller coasters and the amusement parks that house them have changed dramatically. But the thrill that attracted all those first participants still remains. Celebrate the nation’s love of heart-stopping adventure by visiting an amusement park this summer. Follow these tips to make the most out of your trip. I’M LOST! Before you head out, review park maps and ride descriptions. Create a list of the attractions everyone in your group wants to see and plan out
your route ahead of time. While some spontaneity can be fun — it’s a vacation, after all — the sheer size of many parks coupled with high anticipation can be overwhelming if you aren’t prepared. Planning ahead will save you a few headaches and disappointed family members. PACK THE ESSENTIALS Find an over-the-shoulder bag or strap on a fanny pack to carry your cash, keys, snacks, water bottles, sunscreen, lip balm, and sunglasses. You’re spending the whole day outside, so make sure you’re considering the weather when you head out, and always slather on a generous amount of sunscreen. Lastly, wear comfortable walking shoes to prevent blisters and aching heels. You’ll have more fun if you know you’ll be prepared for anything.
EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: BETH COMBINING PASSION AND EXPERIENCE
This month, we’re shining a spotlight on a familiar face around our clinic! As Marshall Orthodontics’ treatment coordinator, Beth is the very first person to meet our patients as they begin their journey toward a perfect smile. Having worked with Dr. Marshall for almost three years now, we’re sure many of our readers recognize her. But beyond her kind chair-side manner, Beth has a wealth of industry experience and a passion for brightening patients’ days. While Beth came to us in September of 2016, she’s been working in the dental field for 15 years. In fact, she was following in the footsteps of her mother, who also had a long career in dentistry. Eventually, Beth would delve into the world of orthodontics, finding the work to be a perfect fit. This specialized field gives her more options to offer patients and lets her guide them toward truly remarkable transformations. There are few things Beth likes more than the excitement on a new patient’s face. Outside the office, she enjoys spending time with her three children, who are ages 7 through 13. She also keeps up her passion for dancing. As a child, dance was her first love, and she even had dreams of becoming a backup dancer. While she may not be taking the stage with Beyoncé, she’s still the first person to cut a rug to this day. While we’d support Beth if she ever were to dance her way to stardom, we feel lucky to have her here!

TEAM MICHELLE THANK YOU FOR YOUR KINDNESS AND SUPPORT
Michelle Hyman is a native of Summerville who has excelled in every part of her life. She has worked hard as a director for our very own WCSC-TV Live 5 News for the last 11 years, while still finding the time to be an amazing daughter, a loving big sister, and a true friend to everyone she meets. While Michelle has faced many challenges in her life, none have been as difficult as the one she faces now. At the beginning of this year, Michelle was diagnosed with stage 4 Metastatic Breast Cancer. The burden of weekly chemotherapy treatments, appointments, and prescriptions has understandably drained her of her usual positive attitude, disrupted her work schedule, and left her tired and strained. But she’s not done fighting. Due to these taxing circumstances, Michelle’s friends and family have the following three requests for our wonderful readers: 1. Pray for Michelle’s renewed and continued strength. 2. Pray for a miracle. 3. Pray to help alleviate the financial hardships she finds herself in. Michelle’s family and friends want to do everything they can to eliminate at least one of the anxieties she has: her financial burden. It’s their hope and ours that we’ll be able to do just that — but we’ll need your help. The money donated will allow her to focus on resting and recovering from her treatments, as well as give her some much-needed peace of mind. I am proud to take up the torch. I will be participating in the donation program for her treatment and promise to match the first $2,500 that is donated to our good friend Michelle. If you want to help Michelle, I simply ask that you write the check out to “Dr. William Marshall,” and fill in the bottom line for “Team Michelle.” That way it’s easy for us to donate the money directly to her once we raise as much as we can. Whether it’s through a donation or through your gracious prayers, everyone here at Marshall Orthodontics wants to thank you for your support and kindness. Together, we can make a difference.

A CHANCE TO FIGHT
Here at Marshall Orthodontics, we want to express our support for our dear friend Michelle Hyman in her fight against cancer.
2. That we will all pray for a miracle! (Jeremiah 32:27).
3. Donations to alleviate the effects of the financial hardship she now has and will continue to endure.
A Summerville native, Michelle is an amazing daughter, a loving big sister, and a true friend. After growing up in the Lowcountry and attending local schools up until her graduation from the University of South Carolina, she’s spent the past 11 years faithfully working behind the scenes at WCSC-TV Live 5 News.
As Michelle puts up the fight of her life, her friends and family want to do everything possible to eliminate one of her anxieties: the financial burden that comes with a cancer diagnosis. The money donated to Michelle’s fight will not only provide her with peace of mind but also help her focus on resting, rehabilitating, and repeating treatments. Every single dollar helps, both financially and emotionally. If you feel inclined to donate, even if it’s just $5, $10, $20, or $50, please do. I will personally match the first $2,500 donated. Simply write the check out to Dr. Marshall, and he will handle getting the donations to her. Just include in the memo line “Team Michelle.” Just to make sure we’re doing as much as possible, we’ll also be doing a back-to-school raffle. Two individuals who enter will have a chance to win a $250 Visa gift card. The raffle will run from June through the end of August. Here’s how it works: For every $10 you donate, you will get one entry, and the winners will be drawn on Sept. 1. Let’s do everything we can to give back to one of our own in her time of need.
Now, at 37 years young, she is facing her greatest challenge yet as she fights for her life.
At the end of 2018, Michelle was suffering from pain in her shoulder and abdomen that required her to see a doctor. After the initial tests, her doctors believed she was suffering from liver disease. But after further examinations and scans, she was ultimately diagnosed with Stage 4 Metastatic Breast Cancer in January 2019. Since then, she has endured weekly chemotherapy treatments.
In light of these circumstances, her friends and family are requesting three things:
1. That we all pray for Michelle’s renewed and continued strength — that she will soar on wings like an eagle, that she will run and not grow weary, that she will walk and not be faint (Isaiah 40:31).
