I’M THANKFUL FOR YOU! HAPPY THANKSGIVING FROM MARSHALL ORTHODONTICS
It’s that time of year again — if your house is anything like mine, you’ve been fielding phone calls from relatives for weeks, your pantry is stocked with cans of cranberry sauce, and you have a turkey in the freezer just waiting for the oven. As fun as the meal and the pageantry are, here at Marshall Orthodontics, we make an effort every year to remember what Thanksgiving is really about: taking the time to be thankful for everything we have, all that we’ve accomplished, and everyone who has helped us along the way. Personally, I’m counting you as one of the people I’m thankful for. Managing an orthodontic practice is tricky business, and Marshall Orthodontics’
village to raise a business, and you’ve been one of those villagers for me!
I hope your Thanksgiving dinner is as bountiful as the one I’m planning with my family and that you can look back over your year and find plenty to be grateful for. Personally, I try to focus on the little things as well as the big ones — I’m certainly thankful for my family and that my business is doing well, but I also appreciate every smile and positive comment I receive! My hardworking, upbeat employees regularly make my day, and so do the patients I help, particularly when I get to see their brand-new smiles for the first time.
details). I know I’ll be writing messages in a few, and I’m looking forward to passing them out personally to the kids at Prisma Health Children’s Hospital and the seniors at Fairview Park senior living center. Together, hopefully we can make their holidays just a bit brighter and give them another small thing to be thankful for next year. As the beloved Winnie the Pooh once said, “Sometimes the smallest things take up the most room in our hearts.” – Dr. William Marshall

ENGAGE YOUR KIDS ON THANKSGIVING WITH THESE GRATITUDE-THEMED GAMES
Thanksgiving is an excellent time to teach children about gratefulness. By planning some fun, gratitude-themed games, you can impart a valuable lesson and spend some quality family time together. Get your kids in the holiday spirit by adding a Thanksgiving twist to these classic games. PICTIONARY Want to bring out your kids’ creative sides? Pictionary is the perfect way to encourage artistic expression and grateful thinking. Try adding a rule where players have to draw something they’re grateful for. This will get your kids thinking beyond turkey and stuffing and give them an imaginative way to express their gratitude. Plus, who doesn’t love a good art contest? GUESS WHO? To play gratitude-themed Guess Who?, have each participant write down their name and something they’re thankful for on a slip of paper and put it in a bowl. Then, at the dinner table, have each person draw a random slip
and read what it says without saying the name while everyone else tries to guess who wrote it. While Pictionary may get your kids talking about what they are thankful for, Guess Who? will tune them into what others around them are thankful for too. PICK-UP STICKS Like regular pick-up sticks, the goal is to remove a stick from a haphazard pile without disturbing the others. However, by using colored sticks that represent different kinds of thankfulness — such as places, people, or food — you can make players think outside the box. This will ensure you get a wide range of creative, thoughtful answers whenever the kids pick up a stick. These modified games are great for helping your kids realize how much they have to be thankful for. Use these to spend some fun, educational, quality time with your family this Thanksgiving.
EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: KELLI A PRACTICED, STEADY HAND
Kelli has been in the orthodontic field for 21 years — long enough that her career could order a drink all by itself. Every day when she comes into the office, she puts 110% into her work and offers a combination of passion and experience that’s rare to find. That’s perhaps no surprise because it turns out Kelli had her heart set on orthodontics even as a teenager. “While I was in dental assistant school, I really liked the orthodontics process, and I knew that I wanted to specialize in it when I was finished. Plus, I had some experience in high school. I did sterilization for an orthodontics practice after school, so I knew I liked it from that point on,” she says. After graduation, Kelli worked as an orthodontic assistant in her hometown of Charleston before making a move upstate. Then, she worked at a practice in Spartanburg before making the switch to Marshall Orthodontics, where we’ve kept her busy for a year and a half so far. As an orthodontic assistant, Kelli does everything, including setting up workstations in preparation for patients, helping install dental gear, making
adjustments, and taking X-rays and impressions. She says the variety of duties is one of the things she loves about her job. “General dentistry is just fillings and cleanings. In orthodontics, every patient needs something different, and I get to work more on my own than in general practice,” she says.
Kelli also loves getting to know her patients and looks forward to seeing our regulars.
“What I like about orthodontics also is that we get to see our patients every four to six weeks, so I feel like we kind of build a relationship with them,” she explains. “I enjoy catching up with them when they come in for adjustments and really like being able to see their smiles from start to finish.” When she’s not at the office, you can probably find Kelli outdoors with her 17-year-old son, Carter, and 11-year- old daughter, Rylee, either boating, camping, or lounging by the lake. On her own time, she likes to go to concerts with friends and check out nearby wineries. Inside the office and out, there’s something new and surprising around every corner.

HAVE YOU FILLED OUT ONE OF OUR HOLIDAY CARDS YET? YOU COULD WIN A $250 VISA GIFT CARD!
We believe everyone deserves to feel loved and appreciated during the holiday season — particularly those who are struggling with illness, loneliness, or both, and could use a bit of extra cheer. That’s why this year, our office put together a holiday card campaign to send messages of warmth and encouragement to the folks at the Fairview Park senior living center and the kids at the Prisma Health Children’s Hospital. Our staff has been contributing cards since the campaign launched, but we could use your help to get well-wishes to everyone! If you have time to pick up a holiday card, write a quick message, and drop it off at our office on your next visit, we’d love to hear from you. It’s just a few minutes of effort, but it could make the day of the child or senior who opens the card in December. To make things even easier, we’ve taken the initiative and ordered a batch of 300 holiday cards to stock at our reception desk! That means if you come in for an appointment this month or next, all you have to do is ask for one and jot down a quick message to start spreading holiday cheer. Oh, and did we mention there’s a prize? For every holiday card you bring into the office, you’ll be entered into a drawing to win one of two $250 Visa gift cards. There’s no limit to how many cards you can bring in, so don’t hesitate to go all-out! We’ve been touched already to see cards coming in with sweet notes, and Dr. Marshall and the rest of us on staff would love to have all 300 cards we bought filled out by the time we visit the hospital and senior living center on Dec. 15. We’re already picturing all of the smiling faces we’ll get to see. Our patients are some of the most generous people around, so we have no doubt we’ll meet our goal! Next time you’re in the office, snag a card and prove us right — and secure your chance to win big, too.

THE GIFT OF GIVING
CELEBRATING GIVING TUESDAY SUPPORTING THE PEOPLE YOU BELIEVE IN
November is usually all about Thanksgiving, but it isn’t the only holiday that encourages generosity. Giving Tuesday is a phenomenal celebration in which millions of people from across the globe are inspired to spend 24 hours giving back to the communities they love. ORIGIN AND GOAL Giving Tuesday is celebrated every year on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, and this year, the holiday lands on Dec. 3! It was established in 2012 by the United Nations Foundation and New York’s 92nd Street Y as a response to consumer-driven holidays like Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
on a global scale using the hashtag #GivingTuesday. The website states that “... technology and social media could be used to make generosity go viral; that people fundamentally want to give and talk about giving.” Through massive social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, the individuals and companies participating in Giving Tuesday can spread their missions and messages all over the world, encouraging others to do the same. HOW YOU CAN CELEBRATE Now is the perfect opportunity to support your community and the causes you believe in. The best part of this holiday is that
“giving” doesn’t just refer to donating money. People can give back by volunteering their time to help a nonprofit business, donating goods and food, or just buying a stranger some lunch. Even the smallest actions can have the biggest impact. If you’re interested in participating in Giving Tuesday, get together with your friends, family, sports team members, or neighbors to brainstorm on how you can give back. To learn more about how you can participate, visit GivingTuesday.org .
The purpose of the holiday was to spread the spirit of giving, not only for the people in our nation but individuals across the world. The goal is “to create a massive wave of generosity that lasts well beyond that day and touches every person on the planet.” TECHNOLOGY AT ITS BEST Through the use of social media and technology, the organization hopes to encourage and spread generosity
