delivering zero carbon by 2050. Tackling our existing homes has to be a major priority given that they contribute 20% of the country’s carbon emissions. The FMB has been working with the Construction Leadership Council (CLC) to develop a National Retrofit Strategy, which would last until 2040, to upgrade our existing homes to make them greener and more energy efficient. Rather than the piecemeal approach that we have seen to date with the ill-fated Green Homes Grant scheme, the strategy argues for a longer-term vision that will include all the necessary elements to develop a new retrofit market such as leadership, performance standards, finance, compliance and customer demand. Critically we will need a skilled and growing workforce which will grow in numbers to meet the demand. In this edition we present a guide to apprenticeships on pages 28-31 and look out for the article about retrofit training on page 23. Have your say I want to remind everyone that being a member of the FMB gives you the opportunity to have your say about what the FMB does. Our 11 Area Boards across the four home nations will be hosting their Annual General Meetings (AGMs) later this year. Our electronic voting system makes it easy for anyone
at least once in the past year according to a recent Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) report called, Understanding Mental Health in the Built Environment . More than half work for organisations with no policies on mental health in the workplace. Even more alarming is the fact that every working day two construction workers take their own lives. We need to get better at recognising the signs and symptoms for those who are suffering from stress, anxiety or depression and start the conversation with our colleagues and work mates to assist their recovery. It is against this background that I’m very pleased that our National President, Jan Etchells, has chosen the Lighthouse Club as the FMB’s nominated charity during her term in office. The Lighthouse Club is the only charity that provides mental, physical and financial wellbeing support to the construction community and their families. It receives no public funding and relies on the generosity of those within the industry to help with its work. There is much work that needs to be done to improve the safety and emotional wellbeing of our industry, which is why the FMB will be doing its bit to support the charity’s activities over the coming months. Visit tinyurl.com/FMB-charity for more information or tinyurl.com/FMB-Donate to make a direct donation. If you are seeking support please contact the Construction Industry Helpline on 0345605 1956 or visit www.constructionindustryhelpline.com . Retrofit training The UK Government’s Green Industrial Revolution is going to require a lot of hard work if we are to have any chance of
wanting to stand for election or re-election. You can find out the date of your next AGM on page 48. Finally, the easing of restrictions is a welcome relief but please continue to keep safe! Britain’s recovery needs you.
