What Is Your Lifestyle Going to Be Like in Each Stage of Retirement? BEYOND THE BOAT
A s you get ready to retire, you’re you won’t have to punch in every day or drive to work in miserable weather. Your retirement savings will give you the ability to pursue a whole new lifestyle. In your ideal retirement, you may plan to bask in the sun as you lounge in the back of a fishing boat with your feet up on the seats. In the vision, the sun kisses your face as you reach into the cooler for another cold one. The next thing you know, something is tugging at the end of your line. You reel it in. It’s another perfect catch. This is the dream, and you could do it every day. However, in actual retirement, you have to pay greater attention to your changing lifestyle and the daily responsibilities you have during your golden years. You have to think about how your life will change over the coming years. You may start with the boat, but you also have to think about what comes after the boat. probably looking forward to enjoying newfound freedom. In retirement, There are three stages of retirement: go go, slow go, and no go. Each stage requires different kinds of planning and investment strategies. You have to take your income into account at each stage. This includes fluctuations in taxes, family needs, your needs, and your spouse’s needs. Lounging on the back of a boat is one thing, but the full scope of retirement is something else entirely. Retirement is certainly not for the weak, but it is worth it.
there still will be other challenges along the way, from deciding to downsize to deciding whether or not to go into assisted living. And you will have to tackle these challenges head on. Luckily you have the benefit of talking about these issues now before you grow older and before they occur. Have the conversation with your loved ones. Have conversations that go beyond lounging on the back of the boat. Talk about what’s beyond the boat. We can be part of that conversation, too. We always want to hear from you. Let us know what we can do now to make your retirement even better later on. And as part of the greater“retirement conversation,”we’re introducing a new advisor fee platform that gives you even more access to your dollars and documents on a regular basis. We’ll be sending out letters and emails to all our clients explaining the benefits of this new platform, and we hope it makes your retirement a little bit easier. Stay tuned! –Gary Mattson
older. I’m getting older, and everyone I know is getting older every single day. This comes with challenges you never really think about during your working years, like having to adapt to mobility challenges at home or your spouse not being able to travel. Early on in retirement, you may be living the good life. But if you aren’t keeping yourself moving, you risk losing your mobility. There’s a lot of truth to the phrase,“If you don’t use it, you lose it.”It’s a problem I see every day. People don’t take care of themselves and they lose abilities they once had— and that includes mobility. You have to take care of yourself. As you get older, living on the lake or traveling will take more energy than it did in the past. At some point, you have to ask if living on the lake is something you can continue to do, or if living on the farm and taking care of 10 acres is still possible. There are a lot of questions you need to think about.
Ideally, you have money saved to help take care of things you can’t personally take care of. But
What it comes down to is a topic a lot of people don’t like to talk about: aging. We’re all getting

A Golden Opportunity in Your Golden Years
3 TIPS FOR CHANGING CAREERS LATER IN LIFE
It’s 6 a.m. on Monday morning, and your alarm clock blares in your face. You groan and, with the thought of another week looming over you, pull yourself out of bed. But the early wake-up call is the least of your worries. Another week has begun, and you’re still stuck in a job that you no longer love or maybe never did. Does this sound familiar? If so, you may believe changing careers isn’t worth the hassle, especially if you’re close to retirement, but here’s the secret: It’s not too late! There’s nothing stopping you from finding a career you love later in life. Here are three tips to get you started.
ways and focusing on the things you cannot do will only hinder your ability to find a job you actually love. Instead, take a deep breath and be open to what comes. You may discover a hidden talent or passion!
Forget the Money
Money matters, but it shouldn’t be your first priority on the job hunt. Instead, consider what’s going to make you the happiest. What’s your dream job? What have you always enjoyed doing? If money wasn’t an option, what would you be doing right now instead of counting down the hours to 5 p.m.? Be realistic in your goals and find something you love.
Be Flexible
Seek Guidance
If it’s been a while since you’ve hunted for a job, then you may have forgotten what it’s like. Job searching can be exhausting, and some job requirements can look overwhelming. But getting stuck in your
Remember, you’re not alone in this fight! Plenty of people switch careers midway through their lives to focus on something they really enjoy.
DO YOUR PART TO KEEP AMERICA BEAUTIFUL
And Maintain Green Living Spaces for Everyone
Have you ever walked through a park and seen a plastic bottle or wrapper lying on the ground? If so, did you pick it up and properly dispose of it? You might not have realized it, but in that moment, you took a small step toward keeping your community — and, by extension, America — beautiful! April is Keep America Beautiful Month, and folks who celebrate aim to help each community in every state stay clean and green. Created by the nonprofit organization Keep America Beautiful, this holiday offers a perfect opportunity to roll up your sleeves and work to better the place you live in. Here are three ways to show your appreciation for a green America this month. This event is one of America’s largest community improvement programs, with hundreds of thousands of people participating each year. In 2019, over 550,000 volunteers participated in the GAC to bring natural beauty back into their communities. 2020 marks this event’s 22nd year, and you can be a part of it this month! Volunteer your time with a local Keep America Beautiful affiliate or another community improvement program close to home. Do your part to clean up your parks and spread awareness today. Volunteer for the Great American Cleanup.
Start plogging.
If you’re passionate about staying active and cleaning up your neighborhood, then this is the perfect activity for you! Plogging combines jogging and picking up litter, which takes care of your health and keeps your community clean. Anybody can do it: Just throw on your running shoes, grab a bag, head out the door, and pick up any stray bits of trash you see on your morning jog or evening walk.
Improve recycling through education.
An important goal during Keep America Beautiful Month is to spread awareness about recycling. There are various ways to educate those around you about recycling and encourage them to do their part. At work, for example, you can volunteer to lead a recycling initiative by printing off guides and fostering discussions on why recycling is so essential. At home, you can make a commitment with your family to fulfill the three R’s of recycling: reduce, reuse, recycle.

annual Wildflower Festival in midsummer, which features nature walks, art, photography, culinary experiences, and more. For a truly unique experience, you can even ascend the town’s titular Crested Butte to spot some rare alpine sunflowers next to the picturesque West Elk Mountains.
Spring is here, which means beautiful flowers are finally showing themselves after a long winter. Here are some of the best places in the U.S. to see flower blossoms and welcome the season.
Great Smoky Mountains
Antelope Valley
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park stretches across North Carolina and Tennessee, and while its scenery is beautiful year-round, the park is especially alluring to nature enthusiasts during the spring. Through this season, miles of lady’s-slipper orchids, irises, cardinal flowers, and lilies dot its lush green landscape. It’s dubbed “Wildflower National Park” throughout this time of year, and you can experience it by car or on foot. The park also offers expert-led tours that weave through the flowers during their peak bloom.
The California Poppy Reserve in Lancaster, California, is a 1,780-acre park that features sloping hills covered with fields of vibrant orange, yellow, and red poppies in the spring. Warm temperatures and heavy rainfall across Southern California during this time of year create a brief period of thick blooms as far as the eye can see. And while the poppies can be enjoyed from the comfort of your car, the best way to experience them is to walk the leisurely Antelope Loop Trail for a breathtaking, up-close adventure. Spring flora is gorgeous and naturally attracts large crowds of people every year. If you plan to visit any of these destinations, just remember that their ecosystems are delicate. Respect park signs, stay on designated trails, and do your part to make sure these flowers return year after year for future generations to enjoy.
Crested Butte
Crested Butte, Colorado, is best known for its winter sports and summer hikes. But recently it has drawn the attention of flower enthusiasts for its unique pink, orange, and gold alpine wildflowers that appear in the spring. This natural phenomenon even inspired the creation of the
