Golf

•The no mow areas on the golf course are by design. They are not marked as hazards so any ball that enters a no mow area and is not found is a Lost Ball. While playing your round, if you stroke a ball into the no mow areas, play a Provisional Ball to help with the pace of play. •Though the grass in the now mow areas is shorter during the spring, it is not intended for golf cart traffic. You may enter now mow areas in search of a ball, but please DO NOT drive golf carts into these areas. •Please observe the golf cart rules for the day. Every effort will be made to maintain the 90º cart rule as often as possible. However, when carts are restricted to paths, keep all wheels on the paths. •The new fairways at Arlington are Patriot Bermuda grass. When taking a divot please fill the divot with sand. There is no need to replace the divot as it will die. The grass will fill-in within a few days. •Please be sure to repair your ball marks on the green as a couple others at the same time. A properly repaired ball mark will keep our greens looking spectacular all season. All golfers at ANCC are expected to dress in a manner that reflects the decorum and good taste of current or traditional golf attire when using any of the golf facilities. Clothing items such as denim jeans or denim skirts (any color), frayed or cut-off shorts, athletic or tennis shorts or skirts, spandex biking shorts, gym shorts, sweat suits, warm-up suits tennis dresses, tee shirts, halter tops and tank tops are NOT considered appropriate golf attire. For men, tucked in collared or mock turtlenecks shirts are appropriate.

Course reminders As spring slowing creeps out of that long cold winter the golf season is getting into full swing. As we get started this season our Arlington and Fairfax golf staff asked to remind everyone of a few things:

Handicap Posting Information As the 2017 golf season gets underway, the Handicap Committee reminds all players that in order to maintain the integrity of our handicap system, they should post every round played, except when playing alone (new beginning January 2016). Scores should be posted for any format, even when you pick up without holing out or when you skip holes. This includes playing less than a full 9 or 18 holes. If a player does not hole out, he should assign himself the score for that hole that he would have most likely have achieved, or, if he skips a hole, his handicapped score for that hole. Guidelines that detail how to post rounds are posted in the golf section of the website. We also remind players that the Handicap Committee monitors the handicap system and has imposed handicap penalties when players fail to post regular play and/or tournament scores. For additional handicap information and requirements for maintaining a handicap at ANCC, click here .

2017 Adopt-A-Hole Following a very successful program in 2016, we’re looking for golfers to join us this year in helping to keep our ANCC courses in great condition, despite the 80,000+ rounds per year that we play on them. This is a huge amount of play, and when you play golf, you create divots and ball marks – it’s part of the game. It’s our responsibility as golfers to fix our divots and ball marks – and that is part of the etiquette of the game. Your course needs you. Please help us protect our investment and keep our playing enjoyable. Click here to read more and send us an email at [email protected] for full details. SGLNV - Senior Golf League of Northern Virginia The Senior Golf League of Northern Virginia was founded in 2004 to promote friendly competition between Senior Golfers at Country Clubs in Northern Virginia. Are Your Clubs Ready for the Golf Season? When was the last time you had your clubs re-gripped? Eighteen months is the absolute maximum you should wait to change your grips because slick or worn grips can have a negative impact on your game, like driving on worn tires. Maintaining proper grip pressure is essential in making a smooth swing, but worn grips require tighter grip pressure which inhibits the swing. Worn grips are especially slippery in wet conditions. Degradation is gradual, so you may not even realize how worn they’ve gotten. Stop in either Golf Shop or have a Pro look at your grips. The CWGO golf season is underway! Mid-week play will begin in ARL on Wednesday, 3 May , and in FFX on Thursday, 4 May, 20. Saturday play continues in May with a play date on May 6 at ARL, followed by our second tournament of the year at FFX on May 13 – our Annual Charity Scramble. Our last scheduled Saturday play in May is on May 20 at ARL. Sign-ups will be online here . Save the date for the 2nd Annual CWGO/WGO-18 Member - Guest Tournament. You can bring 1 guest and pair with another Member-Guest or invite 3 guests to make your own foursome. The theme this year is “It’s Your Lucky Day at Army Navy.” It will be a 2-day event beginning with an evening “Fun Par 3 Challenge” on June 27 (optional) followed with the tournament on June 28. Both events will be at ARL. For questions, please contact Pam Quinn at [email protected] or Char Foley at [email protected] . CWGO extends a warm welcome to our newest members: Frances Messalle, Kimberly Welter, Kristin Clegg, Jen Lednicky, Shara Fordyce and Susan Morris! If you are interested in joining, contact Tina Gwilliam at [email protected] . ANCC and the Civil War Convalescent Camp

to all of the Club’s facilities and activities. The program is only open to NEW Members. ~ 1.5 of Resident Monthly Dues

Early events during the Civil War contributed in many ways to the historical aura of the Club. One of those events is the account of the establishment and ultimate demise of Camp Convalescent situated on the banks of Rapid Run, along four present golf holes close to Army Navy Drive. The aftermath of the First Battle of Bull Run in July 1861 left thousands of wounded in dire need of care. Hundreds of those were sent to the newly established Camp for treatment. Unfortunately, the principal medical procedure in that era for men shot in the extremities was amputation. The large number of amputations in the Camp resulted in the legend that “Rapid Run ran red with blood from the ministrations of surgeons caring for the Bull Run wounded”. Such treatment poorly administered, along with harsh living conditions, lack of supplies, and inadequate clothing and shelter soon led to the Convalescent Camp being referred to as “Camp Misery”. Under mostly miserable conditions, the Camp remained active until February 1864. For more information on “Camp Misery” and the ANCC Foundation’s efforts to publicize and memorialize all facets of the Club’s history, please click here .
