Marco Island Historical Society Presentation and Reception Thursday, May 20 4:00 pm

Another mystifying piece of local history has arrived in Marco Island. This one came quietly – arriving in a U-Haul, accompanied by clear plastic bags of debris that warn: repair work ahead. It was a battered skiff built by Eugene Paul Teachout, World War I veteran who lived alone in the Everglades around Goodland for decades. So, who was Paul Teachout? Pat Rutledge, executive director of the museum, and the museum's board, can't tell you. But she will tell the story of where the skiff is now and what’s happening to it. Pat will present this story on Thursday afternoon, May 20 th here at MIYC. Watch for more information about this event. (by Harriet Howard Heithaus, Naples Daily News)

That's the phrase invoked repeatedly by Charlotte "Charlie" St. Clair, the brainy college student at the center of Kate Quinn's exciting new novel, The Alice Network . In the aftermath of World War II, Charlie is thrown together with a veteran female spy from the previous war (WWI) in a high-stakes journey to locate disappeared figures from the past. Unsolved puzzles and cryptic riddles crop up like weeds in a bomb crater, and as math-whiz Charlie puts it, "There was always an answer and the answer was either right, or it was wrong." But her adventures turn out to be messy, non-formulaic and not so black and white, which after all is what makes life — and novels — interesting. This is the last Book Club discussion for the 2021 season. Enjoy your summer reading and please be ready to submit your suggestions for our 2022 Book Club Season when we return this Fall. Well, April has certainly been a busy month at the Club! We are seeing increased usage of the Club as members have received their COVID vaccinations and are looking for more social outlets. We are also seeing an increased interest in banquet and wedding planning activity. I think it is reasonable to believe that our members feel strongly that as we emerge from the effects of the pandemic the Club continues to be seen as a great place to be. I have kept you up to date on staffing changes at the Club. We are continuing to work at filling open positions and have added a new server and are looking at additional help in the kitchen. It is certainly challenging in the current economic environment to find individuals willing to come to work at the Club. Nevertheless, we have been successful in making key hires that are necessary for us to continue to keep the Club operating.

Members Recruiting Members Our Member Recruiting Member Program is in full swing for FY2021! The Recruiting Member and new Member each receive a $100 gift certificate to use for food and beverage on a Wednesday, Thursday or Saturday Evening or at Sunday Brunch as long as joining fees were paid. Bring us new Members and celebrate with them! Traditionally, each year in May we start to see our activity on the island slow down. And we also see our activity at the Club slowdown in anticipation of the summer season. It is true there is a bit less traffic on the island than a few weeks ago. However, the activity level at the Club continues to be strong. We have several events planned through the end of May. And we have several members who have chosen to extend their time on the island this Spring. Be sure to check the calendar for upcoming events and make sure to get your reservations in! I look forward to seeing you at the Club this month! Dave Everitt I also want to call your attention to an article in this month’s Anchorlines featuring the Sailing Club. For the last two years, the Club has been actively engaged in the operation of the sailing club. Dwyn von Bereghy has exhibited great leadership in helping organize and promote the Sailing Club. Rear Commodore Henry Stanley has also been instrumental in helping provide support to the Sailing Club. I urge you to check out the article and if you can support the sailing club, it is a very worthy endeavor! Our marina project continues to move forward at a good pace. We expect that the marina will be operational by the end of September. We have been successful in signing up Wet Slip Members for the marina. As of this writing, we have seventeen of the twenty-two slips covered by a Wet Slip Membership agreement. We are very excited about the progress of the marina and the strong interest in Wet Slip Memberships! I will certainly keep the membership informed as additional information is available! We have also been signing up several new members during the past few weeks. It is exciting to see new faces at the Club! If you are at the Club and see someone you don't know, make sure you introduce yourself! I know you will find the new members interesting and as excited about the future of our Club as we are!

Isn’t it fun as the Club is able to open up a little more? A big THANK YOU goes to Equity Member Peggy Frazier for working to get many of us appointments to receive the vaccine. Equity and Full Members, please be sure to pick up your member cards so that you can take full advantage of all the reciprocal clubs: FCYC, YCA and the summer reciprocals that are listed in this newsletter and are under MEMBER CENTRAL, then KEY DOCUMENTS on the private side of our website. Please be sure to review the revised House Rules that are also updated in that section on the website. Next, I am eager to see the results of our Annual Membership Survey to see the types of events that you would like to see. Keeping track of the calendar is exciting and sometimes frustrating, but member-suggested events always seem to do very well! That being said, many of you had talked with Pam Dorr asking for an early evening event-something like Lighter Fare with a Flair! We will be testing this as our friends at the Marco Island Historical

10 Also, know that we are filling up membership so if you have friends whom you would like to recommend to the Club, be sure to have them join NOW! Our Summer Memberships are now available with a discount on joining fees if the Summer Member then joins the Club fulltime. Have a SAFE SUMMER! And thank you all for listening to my presentation! Cloe & Ed Gerri , Trial Members, came up to me after the meeting to tell me they would like to become Equity Members, and before I could get downstairs to update their member record, Dominic Sergi stopped me to say that he and JoAnn would like to become Equity Members! On Thursday, I received an email from the Melges-Wiebes saying that Debra & Bob , too, would like to become Equity Members! Now that’s my kind of meeting! Seriously, if you are contemplating upgrading to an Equity Membership at your Club, NOW is the time! Feel free to contact me at [email protected] for more information. Society will join us late in the afternoon on Thursday, May 20 th to talk about the Goodland Skiff. Neil and I, along with Alan and Linda Sandlin were able to see a wonderful presentation on the skiff so we asked them to come share the story with our membership! I do hope you will join us. Please do think about our friends at the Food Pantry and Jan and Jim Rich’s organization For the Love of Cats. Your donations of food and pet food (cat & dog) go a long way in helping those less fortunate in our community. If you prefer to send a cash donation, the addresses are in this issue under the Community Relations area. As you know, this is my favorite part of this column, announcing all the new members and upgrades to our membership! First, Ken & Karen Bostrom upgraded from Full to Equity Membership as they are now spending more time on Marco! New wet slip members Peter & Linda DiDonato and Jim Anderson also upgraded to Equity! Next, Three Month Trial Members Lorie & Jeff Copeland and Merle (Bud) & Nancy Worman, have joined us as Equity Members in April before they left for the summer! Both couples told me how much they enjoyed the Club and can’t wait to return to meet more members! Doug & Kim Gaker are joining us as Full Members by purchasing a slip at MIMA this month. Now, I had this column written before the Semi-Annual Meeting on April 21 st . I appreciate all the feedback I have received from you. First, I did make a comment about whomever is Board Secretary and Membership Chair. I am not planning on going anywhere; it is just that both positions are appointed by the Chairman, and I don’t know who will be the Club Chairman next year. I will still always keep my honorary title of Club Historian!

Member Events Despite this year of Covid and social distancing, we managed to have a full calendar of events starting with the reveal of the newly painted Harbour room last September, and followed by our October 7th “Cheers to 20 Years” celebration of the club's two decades. We honored those members who have been with us from the start of the yacht club, and reveled in where we are today with our new Marina as a beacon of the club's success. In November, we showcased our member ‘performers’ in a Country Jam Session, and moved into December with a jam packed month of events every single weekend...Boat Parade, Ugly Christmas Sweater, Members Holiday Party, and of course, the New Year's Eve bash. Then we ended the much maligned 2020 and moved into a ‘new year’ filled with hope. Although we are slowly returning to normal around the rest of the world, we have to admit that we in Southwest Florida have had a much more pleasant time negotiating the effects of Covid. January gave us a little set-back, but by February we were dining outdoors and dancing for Valentine's Day.

Hooray for Hollywood in March proved to be great fun and a financial success for the Mariners Fund. The music, the Oscars (or “Marcos” as we called them), the singers and dancers were on top of their game. And now, before some of you head north...we will host the Kentucky Derby...Marco Island Yacht Club's Hats and Horses on May 1. Many of you have enjoyed this event for the last 7 years or more. Well, it will be just as exciting when you come dressed for the event and you hear at 7:01...’and they're off ‘. There will be prizes for hats in five categories and a staggering $500 prize for the first place winner who chooses first, second and third place horses. But that's not all… there is a $300 second place and $200 third place prize. The prize money is a generous donation from Gillian Hamer and Dan McElany. Now for what's coming up. Here are some highlights. On October 30, we will have our Welcome Back signature event...Monster Mash. So start thinking about your costume this summer. And in February, we will have a smash hit Mardi Gras with dancing, contests, king cakes, beads and feathers. We pull out all the stops with our N'orleans members, the Hershbergers. In March, the talent show. For those who performed and for those who attended...a smash hit. We will be scouting for talent so start practicing. There are singers, dancers, jokesters, musicians and even Sinatra impersonators. That's just a sampling...maybe an art show, always a Kentucky Derby, and all the daytime cards, games, golf, theater, and book club. Something for everyone. We can't start the party without you, so get ready for another great year of fun!

Marketing & Communications

Last month I shared the updated logos for the Club and the new logo for the Marina with you. Since then the committee has developed the MIYC Logo Use Guidelines and Style Guide to help everyone in using these logos. It identifies the colors used in the logo, layout guidelines, and proper configurations. (If you would like a copy, please contact Michelle Hennessy.) Why do we need brand guidelines? The best way to ensure Marco Island Yacht Club (MIYC) is recognized on Marco Island and beyond is by presenting a clear and consistent image. A strong brand

identity is essential for representing an organization accurately in the public eye. As members of MIYC, it requires us to understand how and when to use the logo, approved colors, and fonts to ensure a consistent brand. If you have any old formats of prior logo versions, please delete them. The new/updated logos are to be used exclusively from this point forward. If you have a need and would like a copy of the new logos, please let me know. To help ensure “proper use,” we want to track who has been given the latest formats and ask that you please “cc” me on any communications you send to another person/vendor for their utilization of the logo. We hope this will reduce the likelihood of accidental/unintended distribution of the wrong version of a logo and prevent a costly mistake. In the coming months, we will be working on helpful templates -- PowerPoint slide, Memo, Letterhead, etc. --and will be providing those to you for your use. If you have any questions on using the logos or applying the Use Guidelines , please contact me. WGCU-TV has produced a really fine historic film on the history of Marco Island, starting from the very beginning and truly amazing every step of the way. There are people who lived, planned, and worked on this island long ago – both men and strong women, whose

vision still shapes our community today. Introducing the film for us will be Craig Woodward, well know local lawyer, historian, and a founding member of the Marco Island Historical Society. And to make it even more fun, he will answer your questions in a Q&A after the program. Boaters Nights during the summer will be a variety of things, including tall tales by even taller members with even longer noses! And, I can assure you, there will be some really outstanding programs already lined up for this fall. Stay tuned.

Getting to Know You – Our NorthStar Transition Manager Carrie Brooks By M.A. Harlacker

Carrie, whose full name is Carrissa, was born in Auburn, Maine, and lived there with her family until she was 22. She studied Early Childhood Education, but ended up taking classes to become a Behavioral Specialist, working with children who had intellectual disabilities. She moved to Florida in January, 2005. Her family is French Canadian, but English is her only language for now. Spanish is on her wish list. Carrie is a sports lover! Football – NFL Patriots; College – Notre Dame; Baseball – Red Sox; and Women’s College Softball. Her bucket list includes seeing a game at every MLB stadium!

Carrie is an outdoor lover, enjoying walks, the Farmers’ Market, biking, and time at the beach. Her favorite trip was to New Smyrna Beach for a girls’ week with her mother, sister, cousin, and three aunts. A dream trip to Ireland and/or Greece is on the horizon. And a pet lover! “I foster and adopt dogs and cats. There are currently 4 dogs and 3 cats inside my house, which my family refers to as ‘The Brooks Zoo.’ I also took a stray cat trapping class at the Humane Society to be able to safely capture stray/feral cats in my neighborhood to get them fixed.” Carrie’s causes include animal rescue and senior pet adoptions. She is in a relationship (which includes dogs), but would also like to have children in her family within the coming year. Carrie’s prior job experience includes working for Stock Development for 14 years in many of their communities: Grandezza and Paseo for food and beverage; Hidden Harbor, Babcock Ranch and Quail West in the realty offices; and Noble Title & Trust in the corporate office. Her last position before arriving at MIYC was the Food and Beverage Manager at The Plantation Golf & Country Club in Fort Myers. As we have seen, Carrie is very friendly, ambitious, and hardworking, currently coordinating with Mrs. Gorman to get everything in order for the NorthStar transition. Her favorites? Music – Patsy Cline; Books – Alicia (a Holocaust memoir) by Alicia Appleman- Jurman; Movies – the Notebook; and the Hallmark Channel. Her personal motto? “Kill them with Kindness.” We all look forward to Carrie being an integral part of our MIYC Family.

Club Calendar Building 101 by Vicki Bretthauer Many folks know that I manage the Club Calendar each year. Some of you asked how it is planned. Pam Dorr, our Dining and Banquet Manager, is also a key player in this process, and our new General Manager Mark Felbinger as well as Chef Robert Aylwin sure have a lot of involvement! So how does the Club calendar for the next year get built? The day after Blessing of the Fleet in mid-February is when the process begins for the next fiscal year! The first thing done is to place the Annual Yacht Club Events on the Calendar:

• Commodore’s Ball • Blessing of the Fleet

• Boaters' Night (1st Wed of the month) • Sunset Cruises (4th Wed of the month)

19 The May calendar, the May through the rest of the season calendar and the DRAFT for our Fiscal Year 2022 (Oct 2021-Sep 2022) are all available as links within this Anchorlines email. We want you to plan to be at as many Club events as possible! When we get to our new Club System, I am certain there will be a way for you to access these calendars to print or download to your calendar! (We do have that option currently but many of you don’t use it.) I know there will be training so that you can have the most current version of the Club calendar at your fingertips at all times! And now you know all the things that are considered when we build your Club Calendar! We have to support our Clubhouse, non-Boating Membership and Staff. We have to make sense of who will attend events and when. So, that is how we then plan Wine & Dine and other dining events. Chef gets consulted to see if he can have dining upstairs or downstairs while still having a Club Event. Try fitting in Twilight Golf, Couple’s Bridge, Men’s Bridge, Book Club and Fishing Club (monthly sub-groups) and then add in Mah Jongg, Ladies’ Bridge and Ladies’ Canasta, our weekly activity groups, and you see how complicated it gets! The calendar is an ever-changing document so that is why we present you one for the month and the outlook so you can plan when to be at your Club! That’s why we have dining events like Seafood Fun, Cooking with Chef or Fla-mingle Tables popping up now that Covid protocols are relaxing. • Colors, mostly the 3rd Friday of the month except for Veteran's Day, Memorial Day and St. Patrick's Day. Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day make sense but you ask, “Why St. Patrick’s Day?” Well, the Colors ceremony for March is always later so it doesn't conflict with St. Patrick's Day Happy Hour. This was done years ago by a Commodore to maintain the solemnity of the ceremony. So, as you can see, our Bridge Events take priority! Next, all Club Cruising Events are placed on the calendar. This is where the conflicts begin! Day Cruises and Extended Cruises get added to the calendar. Dockage constraints influence the dates of these cruises as well as other challenges! A planned extended cruise rarely goes on its initially planned dates because so many outside factors influence it! Marco Island Events are placed on the FY2022 Calendar (Holiday Boat Parade, Holiday Street Parade) along with the standard holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, Valentine’s Day and Easter. Some sunset cruises then get moved due to where Thanksgiving and Christmas fall. Next, we start filling in with our Signature Events, blocking dates so that Pam knows what dates she has available to sell for outside banquets. Weddings sometimes are planned out for more than a year so we need to honor commitments we have already made. Angela Holt, Chair of Member Events, then asks for dates available for planning events. She has to quickly book entertainment NOW as performers are already booking for Season 2022.

MIYC YOUTH SAILING PROGRAM -- SUMMER 2021 Yacht Club and Sailing Center Partnership – a Growing Success! Scholarships helped 14 local kids Last Summer!

As the world begins to come back to normal, the Marco Island Yacht Club Sailing Center has announced its summer youth sailing program for 2021. And it continues to grow! Last year, even though Covid had reared its angry ugly head and shut down so many indoor activities, the Youth Sailing program and its activities for local youth more than doubled the number of children involved in these outdoor activities.

In the previous year, 2019, the summer sailing program had a total of 54 students enrolled. But in the summer of Corona-strapped 2020, the sailing program for the young people of this community grew to a total of 129 enrolled students. There were 73 kids in the beginning classes and 56 in the intermediate level classes. So, it actually grew substantially despite Covid indoor lockdowns. “And it was a super safe sailing program,” reported Dwyn von Bereghy, MIYC Fleet Captain - Sail, who oversees the sail program. “We implemented a strict cleaning program, disinfecting all our gear and boats every day and between classes. And the school instructors took each student's temperature as they arrived and filled out weekly health and travel questionaires. But Covid hit some local families really hard, so last spring at a MIYC Sailing Center Benefit Night, Club members raised a little over $5,000 for instructors, boats, and the program -- including $2,100 for scholarships! As a result, 14 MIYC-funded scholarships were awarded to children of families that had either lost employment or were being furloughed due to Covid. This was the first year for scholarships and an immensely rewarding program. Dwyn hopes to repeat and expand the scholarship program for deserving local youths, but currently no scholarship funds are available and the next Sailing Center Benefit is not until next fall.

For this year, Dwyn reports that we will probably again have about 130 students enrolled. The program gets started with classes beginning June 14 runnning through August 2nd. School fees are $180 for each week of training, and a family can sign up a second child for $160. The week-long classes run for seven weeks.

The kids start off really young. The "Beginner" sailing classes are for children as young as 7 years, up to 12 years old. Beginner classes are in the morning, Monday through Friday, from 9 to 12 noon. These classes focus on developing young students' basic sailing and handling skills, learning nautical sailing terms, knots, and rigging a sailboat. They sail in the school’s small single-sail, Opti Prams. Dwyn says the objective is for these young sailors to feel comfortable sailing their boats in most conditions. Intermediate Class applicants should have completed the Beginner Class or have prior sailing experience. The focus of this program is to master all points of sail, right-of-way rules, and the effects of wind, tide, and current. Designed to develop advanced sailing and boat handling skills, the classes are conducted on the water in the school's 420 class mini-sloops. The Intermediate classes are conducted Monday through Friday, from 1 to 4 pm.

“We limit class size to 10 students with two U.S. Sailing certified instructors and a volunteer,” said Dwyn. “We will have two certified instructors teaching this summer, and they are former students, but we could use more. And we can't forget our two Sailing Center adults who have run the sailing classes for years on site, Rocky Cale and Terry Naylon, who supervise the instructors and develop the course programs.” “These are wonderful courses for our members' grandchildren to take,” said Dwyn. “We can even sign them up for one day, one week, or for the entire summer. It would be a wonderful experience for them, and you would be

amazed at how they develop as young people with expanded confidence and capability. If you want to see this in action, you would be welcome to come by the Sailing Center and watch the 8-year-olds learn to sail,” she concluded. “I am what I am and that’s all that I am, I’m Popeye the sailor man!” POPEYE THE SAILOR MAN REALLY EXISTED

His real name was Frank "Rocky" Fiegel. He was born in 1868 in Poland and, as a child, immigrated to the United States with his parents, who settled down in a small town in Illinois. As a young man, Rocky went to sea. After a 20 year career as a sailor in the Merchant Marines, Fiegel retired. He was later hired by Wiebusch's Tavern in the city of Chester, Illinois as a ‘Bouncer’ to maintain order in the rowdy bar. Rocky quickly developed a reputation for always being

involved in fighting ( and usually winning). As a result, he had a deformed eye ("Pop-eye"). He also ‘always’ smoked his pipe, so he always spoke out of one side of his mouth. In his spare time as a Bouncer, Rocky would entertain the customers by regaling them with exciting stories of adventures he claimed to have had over his career as a sailor crossing the ‘Seven Seas.’ The creator of Popeye, Elzie Crisler Segar, grew up in Chester and, as a young man, met Rocky at the tavern and would sit for hours listening to the old sailor’s amazing ‘sea’ stories.’ Years later, Segar became a cartoonist and developed a comic strip called ‘Thimble Theater.’ He honoured Fiegel by asking if he could model his new comic strip character, ‘Popeye the Sailor Man,’ after him. Naturally Fiegel was flattered and agreed. Segar claimed that ‘Olive Oyl,’ along with other characters, was also loosely based on an actual person. She was Dora Paskel, owner of a small grocery store in Chester. She apparently actually looked much like the Olive Oyl character in his comics. He claimed she even dressed much the same way. Through the years, Segar kept in touch with Rocky and always helped him with money; giving him a small percentage of what he earned from his ‘Popeye’ illustrations. Forty Club Members were present for an incredible evening of wines and food from Argentina. Eric Malinski of Piattelli entertained the Members with stories about how his dad retired in Minnesota, headed for Argentina, and then returned to Minnesota to tell his wife he bought a winery! Another great story was how Eric and his brothers had been on a hunting trip with their dad, they stopped for a break driving home and there was a livestock auction in progress. His dad ended up purchasing twelve head of Buffalo which he grew into a herd of 300. Eric’s dad donated the herd to Yellowstone National Park! Chef Bob’s food pairings with Eric’s family’s wines were a huge success! We had substantial tastings of red meat from chorizo to lamb to beef pepperloin with chimichurri! Dessert was a lovely Dulce de Leche served with Pistachio Mousse featuring a wine named for Eric’s mother! Eric made sure we had yellow roses on each table, then shared with us the story that his father gave his mother a yellow rose each year on their wedding anniversary; on their 50 th wedding anniversary he gave her a bottle of wine named in her honor with a yellow rose on the label! We KNOW Eric will be welcomed to the Club any time! Be on the lookout for a trip to Argentina to see his family’s new resort! Thanks, too, to Ken Stuart for providing a lively impromptu piano concert at the end of the evening. The Member Talent Show in 2022 is going to be wonderful!

South Seas Resort, Captiva Island: April 11-14, 2021

On April 11th we departed for South Seas Resort, a resort and wildlife sanctuary with boundless opportunities for adventure and relaxation blessed with good weather for our departure. The South Seas Marina dockage includes full access to all of the many resort amenities including pools for Aquafit. Land cruisers who joined the cruise stayed at the resort. We fed the Manatees and enjoyed seeing the babies. Some of us played tennis while others took advantage of the 9-hole golf course. We used the resort trolley that takes you around the property and to the quaint shops of Captiva. We had a calm, dry arrival and the afternoon sprinkles dried up in time for our Sunday evening potluck. On Monday we visited the infamous Cabbage Keys for lunch on Pelican where the walls are covered with money! We visited Green Flash for dinner and remembered good times from a prior trip (picture included for Mary M). If you don't 'get' the picture, well you just have to come with us on the next cruise to South Seas! With calm seas for our return we talked about how trips like this one epitomize what MIYC is all about...great camaraderie, new friends, great food, and opportunity to share our love of boating.
