AUGUST 2021

A NewChapter

The Emotions of Taking Our Last Kid to College

We have another big change coming to the Amorebieta household this August — and this one feels a little different than the rest.

Our youngest and only son graduated from high school this May. We had always known this day was coming, and as it came closer, we prepared ourselves for the emotions that would come with it. But seeing him walk across that stage and receive his high school diploma really made what’s happening this August seem all the more real: Our final kid is moving out of the house. By the time you read this article, we’ll be preparing for his “final” days at home. (I put “final” in quotes because as any parent of a college student knows, they always come back. You have the cheapest food and the best laundry access.) This August, our son is moving into the Boise State dorms and will be studying general business. Unlike most parents, our child won’t be hours away from us, so in reality, not much is changing. We will only be a few miles away if he needs anything, and he still has that independence we all craved at his age. Still, regardless of how close our kids are, it is going to be strange not to have a high schooler in the house. For the first time in a long time, it will just be Keri and me. As of right now, we don’t have any big “empty nester” plans. August is also the time of the year when Keri is extremely busy. She’s preparing for a new school year and settling into a new routine with her students for the semester. Maybe that will be a good thing. I can imagine that for as bittersweet as this moment is for me, it’s much more difficult for Keri. Not only is he our only son, but he’s also the youngest. That’s a lot of emotion for a mom to process, so maybe the school year will be a nice transition period for this time in our lives. And next summer is when we will become true empty nesters.

high school careers impacted by COVID-19. Although, I do think the class of 2021 had it the worst. They missed out on more than one year’s worth of all the traditions you get to do in high school. They may be corny, but events like prom are such a big rite of passage for many of us. To miss out on that can be disappointing. I am happy to know the start of our son’s college career will be “normal.” At least he can look forward to moving into the dorms and experience college life just like he’s another college kid. I have no doubt our son is going to do well in college, and while we will miss having the kids at home and are certainly in for a big transition, I’m looking forward to this new chapter in our lives. It’ll be weird to come home to an empty house, but as with anything in life, this big change will soon become our norm.

I’m proud of each of my children for graduating high school and finding their paths in life. Our two youngest children each had the end of their

Is Your Home Office Missing Something? TOP 3 TIPS TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF BACK-TO-SCHOOL DEALS

back-to-school sales are the perfect way to spare your wallet. Have an amazing computer already? You can still benefit majorly from staying tuned! During last year’s back-to-school sale, Apple offered 20% off their AppleCare+ service, which gives you two incidents of accidental damage protection every 12 months. Dropped your laptop or spilled coffee on it? They’ll fix it, no questions asked. Invest in the new office chair you’ve been wanting. Don’t sacrifice your posture just because you’re working from home. Whether remote working has turned into a permanent or a part-time solution for your job, you deserve an office chair that can help keep your back straight, preventing pain and slouching. Many big-box stores will be offering

Everyone loves back-to-school season because of the shopping spree! Students can get tools they’ll actually use for the entire year while they’re on sale while saving a few extra dollars in the process. But you can get that very same feeling as an entrepreneur, too. Here’s how you can make the most of back-to-school deals this year for your home office. Upgrade your home office’s amenities. Are you a seltzer water fan? Every year, Amazon almost always has an “Off to College” sale, featuring various products that make dorm life a little bit easier and more convenient. If you want to do the same for your home office, look into a tabletop fridge — or an electric tea kettle, if tea is more your style.

sales on office chairs, so take the opportunity to sit in a healthier way today — before the expensive holiday season rolls around! Just because you’re an adult doesn’t mean you can’t have the joy of back-to-school shopping too. We hope you treat yourself to something that’ll make your remote routine even better.

Some affordable decor, like wall art or small potted succulents, can spruce up your office without making a mess. If you’re looking to organize your space, consider buying desktop shelves to free up clutter. Then, you won’t have to leave your desk to stay in the zone! Look out for Apple and PC sales! Replacing your current technology can be expensive, but

“We went through a couple different IT solution companies in 2020 trying to find the best fit. MicroTech was so far above the others it wasn’t even comparable. By far the smoothest and best transition and followed through on their promises.” – Nathan S. “Microtech is a fantastic company! They are very responsive and professional, and their employees are knowledgeable and helpful. In emergencies, they are there on the spot and have worked tirelessly to get our company up and going again. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to any business. Thanks, MicroTech!” – Jessica See What Our Customers Are Saying

ARE YOU PROTECTED? The Top Cybersecurity Solution for Your SMB

more trouble for potential attackers, while secure cloud storage in multiple locations offers peace of mind, should anything happen. Lastly, consider your employee training. Your employees may be the biggest asset to your company, but they can be some of your weakest links, too! Teach them how to identify phishing emails and other scamming basics used by hackers and provide training on the latest tools your company is using. Furthermore, consider the unique dangers of a work-from-home environment. It’s not just communication and productivity that can shift when employees are remote — your company becomes more vulnerable, too. By partnering with a managed services provider, like MicroTech Systems, this multipronged approach to cybersecurity puts your SMB at the forefront of protection. Could your company survive that? Most SMBs would struggle.

Today’s cybersecurity options require a multipronged approach — like what we use at MicroTech Systems — to proactively detect and eliminate threats. Start with the platform or program you use to scan and find threats. For too long, IT companies and the clients they served have relied on reactive systems that detect patterns. This often creates a “too little, too late” problem for many SMBs. Instead, artificial intelligence and machine learning technology can actually respond to potential threats before they enter your system. It’s more predictable and secure. Along with that, consider the smaller ways in which your company is being compromised. For example, a secure VPN network is more difficult to hack into than a public one. Similarly, multifactor authentication can create

As the world’s economy continues to globalize through digital connections, hackers are doing the same. This past July, the Russian-based hacking gang REvil demanded $70 million in cryptocurrency to unlock >Page 1 Page 2 Page 3 Page 4
