A Little Summer Fun HangingWith the Dogs and Learning to Scuba Dive

We have a new addition to our family! Back during the harder parts of the quarantine, we adopted a dog named Penny from a no-kill animal shelter, Operation Kindness. We saw Penny in a picture posted by the shelter and fell in love with her at first sight. She’s not a full pug; we think she’s part basenji. Penny is all black like Oliver and has a turned-up nose and a curly tail — she’s the cutest dog. Penny and Oliver love to play. They go back and forth around the house and backyard having a good old time. She also likes to keep our backyard clear of rabbits. We’ll find her out there patrolling the yard, while Oliver just ignores them. When we first had him, Oliver would chase the rabbits all over, but he’s not as fast as Penny and gave up on them pretty quickly. They’re great dogs, and they’ve been loving all the attention from the girls, who were home for the summer. By the time this newsletter comes out, Elissa will be headed back to Oklahoma, Grace will be busy prepping for her second year of law school, and Kaitlin will be getting ready to start her senior year of high school. We’re not really sure how this school semester is going to look, but we do know the dogs are going to miss having everyone together in one place. Including spending a ton of time with the dogs, we had a lot of fun this summer, despite being unable to go out as much as we’d like. regulator into your mouth, then you submerge just your head into the water and try to breathe. The trick is to get used to breathing through your mouth and not your nose. Normally, that wouldn’t be a big deal, but if your mask gets flooded with water, it can quickly turn into one. For Kaitlin, that was one of the most uncomfortable exercises. At one point in the training, you’re required to have your mask flooded, mostly to be prepared if it does happen to you. It’s good practice but not a lot of fun at first, especially when the water gets up into your nose. But if you remember to breathe through your mouth, you’re good. Try to breathe through your nose, and you’ll have a bad time. Currently, we’re looking forward to scuba diving in a small lake over near Terrell that is specifically just for this purpose. I can’t wait to get out there and scuba dive. Whether it’s in the lake or just off a Caribbean island, I know we’ll have a blast!

June, Kaitlin and I finally received our scuba certification, which was something I wanted to accomplish for quite some time. Ever since I was a kid, I remember watching “The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau” on PBS and wanting to do what he was doing. Mom was against it when I was a kid, so I tried again in college. I ended up signing up for classes a couple of times throughout undergrad but never actually made it to any of those classes. I was working full time and my employer kept changing my hours, so I had to drop my scuba diving classes both times. After I graduated, I didn’t think too much about it until Katlin and I started talking about it a couple of years ago. When I mentioned it in a recent newsletter, a reader very kindly (and generously!) offered to give me his old equipment so I could get started. Thank you! We had a great time. We learned lots of new things, such as learning how to properly breathe underwater. They say that’s the hardest part when learning to scuba dive and is best tackled in small steps. You start by putting the
