Greg Miller and his 6 piece band kept us on our feet. There was Dancing in the Courtyard, Dancing at the Burgee Bar and Dancing at the Pointe. The night was perfect. The Member Events Team decorated the Club in black and gold with Mary McKeown creating a glitzy centerpiece. Pam outdid herself in organizing the event on all levels of the Club. The costumes were outstanding from Diana Ross look-a-likes to beehive hairdos. Alice Jobe led her dance troupe, Alice and the Anglers, in a routine to 'My Girl". And to capture the night, Kathleen Douglas took photos, and Chip Pittman sent up his drone to get shots of the Club all ablaze with lights and dancers.

Mardi Gras!

Marco Island Yacht Club

! 4

By Roy Hershberger Mardi Gras is traditionally ruled by King Rex and his Queen (Roy & Kathy Hershberger) and they arrived in typical New Orleans fashion. They paraded in tossing doubloons and Second Lining to the music of the 6 piece “Olympia Brass Band of Southwest Florida” actually known as the “Happy Jazz Band” from Naples. The parade continued picking up guests in colorful costumes, Second Lining with purple, green and gold umbrellas swinging to the beat of the sousaphone while the trumpet, and clarinet belted out the music. Finally, the Krewes settled down to their tables. Soon each Krewe paraded and strutted one by one to the buffet of New Orleans shrimp creole, white fish meuniere, red beans & rice, and Chef Bob’s own creation “Cajun Brisket”. In true Mardi Gras fashion, each Krewe was judged by their enthusiasm, creativity and lack of inhibition. The decision was difficult since everyone really got into the spirit. It required several more rounds before the Krewe of Pygmalion was awarded second place and the Krewe of Nemesis first place. A particular highlight of the evening was the costume and dancing of “Miss Mardi Gras”. Dressed in black with beautiful purple, green and gold feathers and six-inch stilettos her dancing clearly celebrated the fun and good times of Mardi Gras. The award for the best individual dancer clearly had to go to Lauri Kalanges. As the guests finished their meals, the band broke out into one more parade, leading the servers, each with a King Cake, through the room and to each table. A King Cake is a very sugary pastry colored in purple, green and gold. It isn’t particularly tasty but is a strong Mardi Gras tradition. The evening continued with Steve Reynolds playing our favorite dance music; as the judges viewed the many costumes for their creativity, cleverness and fun. Among the many honorable mentions were Count Dracula (Tom Jobe), the Court Jesters (Ray Rosenberg and Linda Spell), MIYC’s own Pirates (Jim and Linda Marr), and Amadeus (Henry Stanley). However, second place went to the Odd Couple (Tom & Dahlia Krepelka) and, probably because of the judges’ nostalgia, first place went to the 1970’s Flower Children (Alan and Linda Sandlin). Just as in New Orleans, Mardi Gras came to an end promptly at Marco Island midnight and the start of Lent.

Chairman’s Report

Whew! It has been busy this season…both on the island and at the Club. The events have been great this year! Mardi Gras, Dancing Under the Stars, Motown and more have been hugely successful. The number of members attending have been near record levels and the fun has been over the top! And there is more to come…Be sure to check out the Club calendar for upcoming events – and make sure you get your reservations in! The Member Events Committee is really hitting it out of the park this year! The entertainment has been great – and members I have spoken with all have been extremely pleased with the events and their participation in them, as well. The Staff has consistently delivered a level of support that makes these events memorable! You also may have heard we have been working with MIMA to develop a project that would add new slips on the river side of the Club. We have had a permit to develop this project for a number of years. Current market conditions along with our improved financial performance and our improved working relationship with MIMA have made this a good time to consider the project. We have been developing various aspects of the project over the past few months and are nearing a time where we will need to decide whether to proceed. We have shared project details with the respective Boards of MIMA and the Yacht Club. We also provided information at the recent MIMA Annual Meeting. And, we have

two information sessions p l anned i n Apr i l f or members of the Yacht Club. On April 3 rd we have dedicated the Boaters’ Night agenda to sharing project information with Yacht Club members. We have also extended an

Dave Everitt Chairman

invitation to MIMA members for the information session as well. And April 16 th we will provide information on the project as part of the April Semi-Annual Membership meeting.

All members are invited to participate in these events. We appreciate member feedback about the project and want to understand any concerns individual members may have before proceeding. I encourage you to plan to attend either the April 3 rd or the April 16 th l meetings. I believe the project, while significant, will have a positive impact on the long-term viability of the Club. I also believe, after hearing the details, you will agree with me. I look forward to seeing you on either the 3 rd or the 16 th of April! Dave Everitt Chairman - MIYC Board of Directors

March has been a busy month at MIMA. The Marina has been over 90% full with more than 20 visitors this month. Quite a few, were visiting from FCYC clubs and enjoyed dining with us (Bird Key, St Charles, Captiva, Tampa, and Bradenton to name a few). With the Marina as full as it is, MIMA has had less ability to accommodate visiting day trippers in large groups. Walker Marine had 7 slips on the 6 th to showcase some of their beautiful boats for sale. We also have 2 new additions to the marina this month, “Janus“ and “Suzanne” guaranteed to make you say “WOW”. Look for more information regarding the proposed NEW slips in the River at Boaters’ Night Wednesday April 3 rd and the Membership meeting on April 16 th . Jill Kiley MIYC Port Captain

MIYC Fishing Club Next Meeting Thursday, April 18 th 11:30am

Fishing in March was excellent. The unusually high winds we experienced in March limited the opportunity time to go offshore, but when the seas calmed, a lot of fish were caught. On one trip, Captain Jim Marr’s crew caught 50 fish. Fantastic!. Captains Tom Morrison and Geoff Walker also saw a lot of action.

On April 12 -13, a group of Members are heading south to Islamorada to fish for Tarpon. We hope to surpass our catch of five Tarpon from last year. The Fishing Club is currently researching future trips to Langara, British Columbia in August and Nevis/St. Kitts or Grenada in January 2020. Please contact Commodore Jeff Comeaux for more information.

Thanks, Jeff Comeaux - MIYC Commodore [email protected]

Beach Party!

The weather really cooperated for the Annual Beach Party on Keewaydin! Some Members arrived on their boats with friends, some arrived on the Bar/ Lunch barge. Some walked the beach, while others relaxed in the shade of their colorful umbrellas. This is what MIYC does best. Gather and have fun! Join us next time. You’ll be glad you did! And if you don’t have a boat, we’ll set you up on someone who loves to share!

MIYC Mini Reef Program Helps Clean Our Canals We all love our Island Paradise and the beautiful waters we boat on. Doing what we can to keep our waters clean is a priority at Marco Island Yacht Club. That’s why we are promoting Ocean Habitats’ “Mini Reefs” to Members to be installed under your docks. We have three under our MIYC docks and dozens of Members are installing them, too. . Each reef establishes an ecosystem of aquatic life under the docks which mimics the environment normally found in the prop root system of mangrove trees. Once established, one reef can clean 30,000 gallons of water a day.

House & Staff

First let me say thank you to all the Members who have made this March the busiest and most fun month the Club has seen. Thank you to Angela Holt and her Member Events Committee for putting together amazing events that were well attended. A special thanks goes to all the Staff for their hard work in making these events so successful. Pam Dorr has been awesome in juggling the schedules to handle all the banquets, member events, extremely busy luncheons, the Burgee Bar and the overwhelming number of evening diners. I do not know how she does it all, but we are so lucky to have her! Chef Bob and the kitchen staff have jumped through hoops to keep up with all the activities and to prepare some outstanding luncheons and dinners. It is incredible how he can make up the number of menus for all these activities, order all the food and beverages, coordinate and help prepare all the food and keep everything flowing to provide service to all our members. A big round of applause goes to everyone for a super month. Calling in for reservations has improved but it is still challenging at times when we expect a certain number of persons for dinner and end up with twice as many. We always expect to have walk-ins, but a large number of walk-ins makes it difficult for the Staff to provide the service you deserve. Pam has on occasion, if she knows in advance, called to hire additional bartenders or servers for some events. Chef just pulls his hair out and makes all the entrees happen. Let’s try to keep Chef from losing more hair. Staff Updates: Most of you know we have lost one of our prize employees, Zachary Box, our maintenance man. He has been with us for almost two years and really loved working here. He said it was a hard decision to leave but he received a

great opportunity for career advancement. He will surely be missed. There were some rumors that Tina Carano was leaving for another opportunity and advancement. I am happy to report she also loves working here so much and meeting all our Members

Robert J DeFeo

that she has decided to stay with us. Besides working as a receptionist and hostess she will be helping Cynthia in Membership and Carlota in Accounting. We are so happy she made the right decision! Some Club updates: The Bridge Room or Board Room has a new look thanks to Jeff Comeaux’s Building and Grounds Committee along with Pam and Zachary. We now have a chandelier, window shades and drapes. In the future we will also have access to the lanai from the Bridge Room. This will give us the best setting on the Island to accommodate some small special events for our Members, e.g. , bi r thdays, anni versar ies, graduations and family gatherings. For the month of April, remember the Club will be open for lunch and dinner Wednesday through Saturday and Sunday Brunch. The Burgee Bar is open Wednesday through Saturday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Do not forget to make your reservations for Easter Brunch on Sunday, April 21st. See you at the Club,

MIYCMember Events By Angela Holt

March kept Members on the move with an event-filled month including the Mardi Gras complete with a brass band. March Madness basketball hoop competition pitted the 'girls' against the 'guys' with a 14 year old young lady (granddaughter of Patti and Harvey Cohen) taking top prize. Music Trivia was a hoot with Members competing to name the tune or the artist. Then to bring the month of March to a happy ending, we had our Signature Event, Motown with the Greg Miller Band. A 6- piece rockin' band kept us on our feet with dancing in the Courtyard, at the Pointe and in the burgee bar. More than 100 Members came in costume from a Diana Ross look, to beehive hairdos and slick gentlemen- wear. The night was perfect. Now April promises to be every bit as exciting. We start out with a Talent Show . . . Marco Island Yacht Club's Got Talent. You will be quite surprised at the level of professionalism. So make your reservations for April 6 before it's too late. There will be singing, dancing, comedy acts and group

performances you won't want to miss. Come see your fellow Members on stage. Don’t miss Wine and Dine on April 13 . . . always a culinary treat. Mark your calendars for the Member Semi-Annual

Safety & Training Officer

As promised, we have arranged an additional CPR/AED/First Aid training course for April 25 th . There will be a flyer going out shortly but, as the last course was way over subscribed, contact me as soon as possible. Vessel Safety Check. Again, a friendly reminder that not only do you need a VSC sticker to be able to participate in Club on the water activities but that it’s a simple and cost-free essential assurance that your boat is safe on the water. It takes 15 min, there’s no paperwork to fill out. Contact Paul Soden (914) 450-8066 ([email protected]), Rudi Landwaard (239-389-4444) ([email protected]) or Mike O’Brien ([email protected]). BOATING SAFETY TIPS 1. Wear a life jacket. No matter what activity you have planned on the water, always remember to wear a life jacket every time you are on the water. Accidents on the water can happen quickly with no time to reach to put on a stowed life jacket.

Trevor Haworth Safety & Training Officer

2. Life jacket Specifications Make sure your life jacket is U.S. Coast Guard approved, appropriate for your water activity and fits properly. A life jacket that is too large or too small can cause different situational problems. 3. Know state boating laws. Rules and laws can differ from state to state and violations can result in ticketing, fines or jail time. 4. Take a boating safety course. Learn valuable tips that can help save your life in unexpected situations by taking a NASBLA (National Association of Boating Law Administrators) approved boating safety course. See below for the courses available at USCG Auxiliary and US Power Squadron. 5. Make sure your boat is prepared. There are many items that need to be checked and rechecked on any boat. Schedule a Vessel Safety Check with your local U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary or U.S. Power Squadrons before you hit the water. Every Vessel Safety Check is conducted 100 percent free of charge. 6. Be sure to know your boat’s capacity. If you have too much on your boat, the boat may become unstable and capsize. 7. Check the weather, including the water temperature. Know the latest marine weather forecast prior to going out, and keep a regular check for changing conditions. 8. Dress properly. Always dress for the weather, wearing layers if cooler weather, and bring an extra set of clothes in case you get wet. 9. Always file a float plan. File a float plan with someone you trust that includes details about the trip, boat, persons, towing or trailer vehicle, communication equipment and emergency contacts. Find out more at floatplancentral.org. 10. Always follow navigation rules. Know the “Rules of the Road” such as operator’s responsibility, maintaining a proper lookout, safe speed, crossing, meeting head-on and overtaking situations. Know what’s going on around you at all times, and always travel at safe speeds for the environment. Find out more at boatoncourse.com (Continued on next page.)

( BOATING SAFETY TIPS Continued) 11. Don’t drink while you boat. Where the primary cause was known, alcohol was listed as the leading factor in 15 percent of deaths in 2016. Find out more at operationdrywater.org. 12. Beware of carbon monoxide poisoning. Gasoline-powered engines on boats, including onboard generators, produce carbon monoxide (CO), a colorless and odorless gas that can poison or kill someone who breathes too much of it. Be sure to install and maintain a working CO detector, never block exhaust outlets, and always dock, beach or anchor at least 20 feet away from the nearest boat that is running a generator or engine. 13. Keep in touch. Communication devices can be the most important piece of emergency equipment on board a vessel, especially in case of emergency. Be sure to have at least two communication devices that work when wet, such as satellite phones, emergency position indicating radio beacons (EPIRB), VHF radios and personal locator beacons (PLB). Cell phones are not reliable in an emergency situation. Boaters Local Knowledge April 1, October 14 and December 2 This course provides practical information on how to navigate various waterways in and around Marco Island. Aerial and on-water photos are used throughout the course and allow attendees to actually see the areas they will be taking their boats through. This course is recommended for new, novice. and intermediate boaters, or boaters who are new to this area. Boaters Local Knowledge – Backwater Edition April 2, October 15, December 3 This course begins where Boater's Local Knowledge ends, and provides those who want to explore the backwaters of the 10,000 Islands with the information they will need to safely navigate this unique area. Geography, tides and other factors that will influence boaters navigating in these waters are thoroughly discussed. Aerial photos are used extensively in this course to aid boaters in knowing where to go...and where not to go. Six routes into the 10,000 Islands are reviewed in the class. This course is recommended for intermediate boaters and above. Boating Skills and Seamanship June 10, September 30 A comprehensive four-week course designed for both the experienced and the novice boater providing up-to-date knowledge for handling boats in all conditions. MIYC Membership

Pat and Lynn Crabtree had a great time being hosted by Dalia and Tom Krepelka at Mardi Gras! When Dalia and Tom made the reservation, they asked to be seated with new Members. Kathy and I really appreciate all Members to do this so that we can introduce new Members to our great Members! This is my favorite part of the column, to welcome all of our new Members! Nora and Ed Kosakoski (Marco Patriots Raffle) and Lesllie and Tom Lind (Walker’s) are our newest Trial members. I had the pleasure of meeting the Linds and their guests at the Motown Party. I can guarantee they are fun loving and fit right in with our membership! Mark your calendar for all the exciting events that our Member Events Committee plans for us as well as our Boating Committee! Do mark your calendar for the Membership Meetings on April 16 th ! Equity Members will have a meeting from 3:30 pm until 4:15 pm and then there will be an ALL MEMBER Meeting from 4:30 pm until 5:30 pm followed by a happy hour, dinner and dancing in the courtyard! A Fun time will be had by all! Please remember to wear your nametags AND remember to make reservations for all events and dining. It so helps the Staff to be able to have the appropriate number of servers available. Vicki Bretthauer (for Co-Chair Kathy Caruso, too)

Kathy and I can’t keep up with all the new Members we are welcoming to the Club! Be sure to introduce yourselves to anyone wearing the red background name tag with white lettering. These are our Trial Members who are checking out the Club. They may think we’re all crazy after last Saturday’s Motown Night! Wasn’t that a blast? I think I will stay a blonde though. That black wig really itched! Remember red badges are Trial Members and we now have great blue and white badges for our MIMA Burgee Members! Know that we have invited MIMA members to Boaters’ Night on April 3 to hear about the River Marina Plans. Please welcome them to the Club! Also, we have on order new badges for our Equity Members. These badges are voluntary if you are an Equity member and would like to recognize your status. We hope to have samples available at our April 16 th Equity Meeting at 4 pm and then our all Member meeting at 5 pm. If you are an Equity Member and would like a new name tag, please email Cynthia Hultquist at [email protected] with how you would like your name badge to read. Bring your old name badge and she will be able to replace the lettering on the badge. It is that easy! And now for the update on Brunch Greeters and the Pineapple Table! We have many Members of the Board and Bridge who help to greet at the Grande Brunch! Thanks to all of you for your help! We’ve tried different versions of the Pineapple Table on Friday evenings, but Fridays are soooooo crazy at the Club that we really appreciate Members who make reservations and ask to sit with new Members! For example, new Trial Members

MIYC Book Club Thursday, April 25 th - Noon - 1:30 PM Please join us for our April Book Club Luncheon Presented by Sharon Lake Book Summary A woman with a traumatic past tries to live a circumscribed life The title Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine is declarative enough to give rise to a silent question, one that becomes vexing within the first few pages of the book: Is Eleanor fine? Eleanor, at least for the majority of the story, is convinced that, yes, she is. Maybe not great . Maybe

not excellent . But just fine, thank you for asking. She works Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. On Fridays, she buys a frozen pizza, a bottle of chianti, and two bottles of vodka, and drinks and sleeps until Monday comes back around. “Work is fine. Everything’s fine,” she tells the social worker who visits her early in the story. During that visit, Eleanor, who narrates the novel in the first person, reveals that social workers visit her biannually at the apartment she’s lived in since she was 17, when social services arranged for her to move there after her final foster placement. The place is outfitted with furniture that “was provided by a charity that helps vulnerable young people and ex- offenders when they move into a new home.”

Something happened to Eleanor. Something that makes people pity her, like the social worker who, when speaking to her, trails off, “looking awkward, sad, embarrassed.” “Ah, I knew them well,” Eleanor narrates. “The holy trinity of Oliphant expressions.” Whatever happened to Eleanor was bad. So bad that it left a scar covering half her face. So bad that it explains why she has no friends and lives a reclusive life. The reader doesn’t find out exactly what happened until the final pages, even though it feels like the answer might be coming at nearly every turn. That suspense makes the book compelling, vivid, and delightfully frustrating.

All Members are welcome at the Book Club luncheons. Even if you did not have a chance to read the book, you can learn a lot and enjoy intriguing conversations about life. Men are welcome, too! Reservations - 239-394-0199

FCYC Update

The Florida Council of Yacht Clubs The Florida Council of Yacht Clubs (FCYC), comprised of 36 yacht clubs including Marco Island, meets six times a year. The most recent meeting, which our Board Chairman and I attended, was at the St Petersburg Yacht Club. The next meeting in March will be at the Eau Gallie Yacht Club in Indian Harbour Beach. These meetings are open for all full and associate club members to attend. You can travel by land or take your boat. If you are interested or would like to learn more about FCYC, please contact me. As a note for your calendar, our Marco Island Club will be hosting the general meeting in May of 2021. FCYC hires government affairs lobbyists, Johnson and Blanton, to overwatch all legislative issues concerning boating and the waterways in Florida. Highlights of the report they gave in St. Petersburg include (1) possession of shark fins is no longer allowed, (2) a gopher tortoise license plate has been

proposed, (3) Key West has created sun screen rules, much like the State of Hawaii (could move through the rest of the State), (4) new Governor’s appointments regarding Boating Advisory Council, and (5) new water policy reforms proposed by Governor DeSantis. Details on all are contained in the full report. A great opportunity for Full Members to Cruise Cuba Directors attending the FCYC meeting at St. Petersburg Yacht Club in January were provided the FCYC Spring Cruise brochure to share with their club members. Several Directors have requested the “A Taste of Cuba” PDF in order to print multiple brochures to provide persons interested in the trip. Our spring trip is open to FCYC Members, families and friends. Anyone having questions concerning the trip is welcome to communicate with me via email or telephone. We look forward to this mini vacation and hope you will join us. The Florida Council of Yacht Clubs has many benefits for member Clubs. This trip still has openings. See info on the following page.
