MIYC August:September 2018

Marco Island Yacht Club

August/September 2018 Volume 18:8/9

Margaritaville Night was held on Saturday, June 23. Members danced to the steel drum music of Patrick Menzes and his Island Sound. Of course, Chef Bob outdid himself with a Caribbean feast of conch chowder, Montego Bay chicken, tropical shrimp and calypso rice and red beans. It was a fun evening, and the limbo contest gave us insight as to our Members' limberness and . . . " How Low They Can Go"?

Independence Day Celebration at MIYC (And Jim McKeown’s Birthday!) The Marco Island Yacht Club held its Independence Day Celebration on the evening of July 3. Members enjoyed a classic 4th of July cookout meal of burgers, hot dogs, ribs, potato salad and corn on the cob and danced to the music of the Classics II. Rear Commodore Jim McKeown was celebrating his Birthday. Members joined his family with a cake, balloons and a rousing chorus of Happy Birthday!

öSinging Bingoõ Was a Night of Fun! Games, prizes, music and fun was the order of the the night at MIYC’s “Singing Bingo” in June. DJ Tony Dodge entertained Members singing favorite golden oldies in between rounds innovative Bingo challenges. Innovative challenges? Well let’s just say a single straight line was not always the way to win! The music was great, the games and dancing were fun, and winning prizes was icing on the cake! Jeff Comeaux won the first round, and some lucky couples like Ray Rosenberg and Linda Spell managed to win twice!

Chef Bob is amazing at culinary delights; we all know that! But to watch him in action is so interesting. He’s a genius with his knives, and look at the size of that cut of beef! On the menu was marinated Flank Steak with White Truffle Pepper dressing and grilled Asparagus. Next, Grilled NY Strip Steak with Rosemary fingerling Potatoes and grill Squash. Events like these are just part of MIYC’s plan to give Members plenty to do over the Summer.

Trivia Night again proved to be an opportunity to compete, laugh and dine on a fabulous cordon blue entrée. This time around, we had a special segment of questions dedicated to tag lines and slogans. Ellie Everitt and Dwyn Von Bereghy compiled the questions and awarded prizes. Table # 3 won the two rounds and the play-off question. The winning players were Henry Stanley, Kim Porter, Alan Sandlin, Carolyn Bradley and Jon Holt. We have challenged all players to a redo on August 25 when the questions will be generic with a few queries on Marco Island history.

Lobsta’ Fest Lobsta' Fest was well attended with the freshest Maine lobsters, New England Pot Roast and Shrimp

overflowing the buffet table. In January, we w i l l ha v e ano t he r Clambake to rival the summer version.

New Mariner’s Item

Attention MIYC Members It has come to our attention that the A.E.D. (Automatic External Defibrillator) in our lobby has expired. You have probably never noticed the small unit below the steps, but it could be a lifesaver. A new A.E.D would cost approximately $1,600. Some of our Staff is trained to use the device. Training for others and Members would add to the cost. Often, CPR training is given along with the A.E.D. class. Please consider making a donation to the Mariner’s Fund to purchase this item. Mariner's Fund Contribution Form The Life You Save could be your own, or that of a Loved one.

Chairman’s Report

Summer is rolling along quickly here on the island! One reason for that is the number of special events taking place at the Club. Through July the Member Events Committee and the Club Staff have been hard at work scheduling and promoting events to attract Members and reciprocal guests to the Club. These events have been well attended…and, based on my ‘non- scientific sampling’ enjoyed by all. And, they are designed to help improve our summer revenue! However, I feel it important to remind all of us – whether on the island for a quick visit or here full time – the Club is open for business on days other than the special events! We have worked hard to communicate the special events. Consequently, we have sent fewer emails reminding Members of the normal dining options at the Club. In addition to the special events, we have Small Plate Menus, Thirsty Thursdays, and the Chef’s Prime Rib on Thursday as well as the Burgee Bar for lunch. We are trying hard to balance the hours of operation with the Member usage. The well- attended special events are a real benefit to our revenue for the normally slower summer months. But, if normal usage falls off, we have not achieved the objective of increasing utilization of the Club during the summer. So, don’t forget your Club when you are thinking of dining options this summer! Also, I want to remind all Members that we are scheduling our normal vacation shutdown of operations in September. During the shutdown, we ask our employees to utilize vacation hours they have earned. We also schedule deep cleaning and general maintenance activities during the shutdown. Be sure to check the calendar hours of operation in September! You can check the Calendar on the Marco Island Yacht Club Website.

The Nominating and Governance Committee recent l y sent a note s o l i c i t i n g M e m b e r nominations for next year’s Board of Directors and for any Member suggested changes to the Bylaws. Any nomi nat i ons and suggested Bylaw changes

Dave Everitt Chairman

need to be submitted to the Board Secretary (Vicki Bretthauer [email protected] ) by 13 August 2018. The solicitation reflects changes made to the Bylaws in 2017, and with hope, improves Member empowerment in the operation and management of your Club. Finally, all Members will have received their 2019 dues invoice with the regular monthly statements mailed in early July. The Dues and Capital charge invoiced for 2019 is the same amount as billed for 2018 Dues and Capital charge. While the Dues and Capital charge do not need to be paid until 30 September, we do appreciate early payment! Dues and the Capital Charge are important elements of our Club’s financial health. Dues are important to enable the Club pay for routine operations (including utility, insurance, and maintenance payments). The Capital Charge is important to help fund replacement of aging equipment and improvements to our facility. I look forward to seeing all of you in the coming year! I hope you have an enjoyable and safe rest of the summer! Dave Everitt - Chairman

As you have seen in this Summer’s E – Blasts, your Club has expanded its Member Events and Boating activities this summer from previous summers. These robust activities will continue throughout September. (Do note that the Clubhouse is closed September 3-19 for heavy clean!) Please read elsewhere in this Anchor Lines or visit MIYC website for our complete listing of all Summer activities. I hope to see those returning in September at the Labor Day weekend Luau on September 1 st and the “Fall into Fall” Happy Hour on the 21 st . Your Bridge and Boating Committee are actively planning next season’s Extended Cruises with the first one to Key West on November 1, led by Jim & Linda Marr. This event was cancelled last year due to Irma and is always a great time. Bob Winterhalter - Commodore Commodore

MIYC bartender Kathy Tummarello's daughter, Tina, has passed away

We are devastated to share the news that Tina Marie Smith, the 30-year old daughter of our bartender, Kathy Tummarello, died Thursday evening July 12, two days after a terrible accident with a truck. This is the second loss of a child Kathy has suffered this year, following the passing of her daughter, Christie, in January. She has two surviving daughters, Jackie and Brittany.

Members have asked how they can help with hospital, burial and other costs Kathy may incur. We are suggesting you send your contributions to Pam Dorr, Marco Island Yacht Club, 1400 N. Collier Blvd., Marco Island , and Pam will consolidate them and present them to Kathy. Checks should be made out directly to Kathy Tummarello . You may want to insert your check into a Sympathy card for Kathy. All of us at Marco Island Yacht Club share in Kathy's grief and wish her strength and comfort at this difficult time. A Memorial Service and Celebration of Tina’s life will be held on August 11, 2018 at 4:00 - Windstar on Naples Bay 1700 Windstar Way Naples, FL 34112

MIYC Membership

First, we’d like to welcome Lee Dorison to our committee. Lee and Dwyn Von Bereghy joined our Club in the Summer of 2017 and have become very active Members! (Dwyn is on the Member Events Committee and runs our Community Outreach Program.) Lee is a former Executive Recruiter aka Headhunter, and now is a realtor on the island. What better background to have on the committee but a headhunter? Lee is going to have the collateral duty of handling our realtor program for our realtor members. FYI, if you are a realtor AND a Member of our Club, we have some wonderful membership incentives for your clients. Be on the lookout for an invitation to a happy hour to discuss the program or, if y o u c a n ’ t w a i t , f e e l f r e e t o e m a i l L e e ( l g d o r i s o n @ g m a i l . c o m ) , K a t h y C a r u s o ([email protected]) or Vicki Bretthauer ([email protected]) to learn about the incentives for our Realtor Members! Each month we say, well, things will slow down, but not at MIYC and not for the Membership Committee! Many of you entertained guests at our Margaritaville Party, the Independence Day Eve Picnic, Grilling with Chef Bob, Trivia and Lobsta-fest! Thank you as we received many leads of possible new Members from many Members. We appreciate that you are proud of your Club and want to have your friends join you all here. Having Members recruiting Members is the best way to get new Members! The best part of our column is welcoming our new Members! We welcome Scott & Lisa Paige from Miami as new

Note that the Club will be closed Sep 3-19 for our Summer clean-up. Also, there are revised House Rules posted on the website under the MEMBER CENTRAL tab and then KEY DOCUMENTS. Please take the time to review them. This is where you will find information about dress code, cell phone usage and guest policies. MIYC Fishing Club

Next Meeting Thursday, Aug. 16 & Sept. 20 th 11:30am The MIYC Fishing Club outing to Islamorada was the most exciting event so far. We spent two days fishing for tarpon on the flats and, believe me, there’s nothing like the feeling of having a 90 pound fish on your line giving you a fight to remember! We each caught at least one tarpon up to six feet long in size. We also caught a number of nurse sharks. It was a great trip and a lot of fun! In August and September the Fishing Club will focus on offshore fishing 30-60 miles out, going for grouper and red snapper. Looking to the new season, we’re planning a trip to Stuart, FL on the Atlantic side to fish for snook (very large bulls) in the St. Lucie River. Our next planning meeting at the Club will be Thursday, August 16 th and September 20 th , at 11:30 am in the Burgee Bar. Please email me if you want to stay for lunch after the meeting, so Chef Bob can plan accordingly. Thanks, Jeff Comeaux - MIYC Vice Commodore [email protected] Feel free to contact us by email. We are keeping the price low, which will be a special summer rate for 9 holes and a cart. To sign up for golf, please contact Summer Golf Captain - Henry Stanley at 817-692-6303 or email him at [email protected] Beginners welcome; just bring a good sense of humor. Water also offers natural resistance, which can help strengthen your muscles and you can add resistance devices to burn more calories! Exercising in the pool provides the toning and

cardiovascular benefits of exercise on dry land with less strain and stress plus it allows for a greater range of motion helping with flexibility and balance. And most importantly, it is enjoyable, fun! As with any other exercise routine, just be certain you get medical clearance from your health care provider before taking the plunge. MIYC Reciprocals To All Full and Associate Members: From now through October , you can "change it up" and visit other clubs in the area for golf, tennis or to dine. We have reciprocal agreements with about two dozen area clubs, allowing our Members to enjoy their facilities--and their members to enjoy ours. Play 18 holes at The Rookery or Hammock Bay, or try tennis at Naples Heritage. What's on offer varies a bit by the club, so take a look at the complete listing for more details. Reciprocals are also listed on the following page. Most on the list offer golf, but a few, like the Island Club, offer dining only. These clubs also have different days that they are closed, so check and plan ahead. At most of the clubs , you pay by VISA or MasterCard, but at Naples Heritage they require a chargeback to your MIYC Club account. Make your reservation through MIYC at 239-394-0199 or contact the reciprocal club directly, and enjoy one more benefit of your membership at MIYC! MIYC Board of Directors announces the Mariner Society. The Mariner Society was established for the enhancement of our Club experience through refurbishment and development of our Club’s facilities. A Board Committee has been established called the Mariner Development Fund to identify the specific projects or areas needing contributions from members. These projects will be on display for your perusal. Donations should be directed to support capital projects, ongoing maintenance, and/or general sustainability of the Marco Island Yacht Club. Donations can be made by check, credit card, or billing on your Club account. Forms are available to fill out to identify where you wish your contribution to be used. A recognition plaque identifying the program, levels of recognition and individual members’ names reflecting their accumulation of contributions will be on display in a public area of the clubhouse. The Mariner Society recognizes five levels of contribution to the Club: Mariner Society Recognition Levels Platinum $20,000 Diamond $50,000 Sapphire $100,000 Contributions by an individual member will be accumulated, and as their contributions increase, they will move to higher levels of recognition. If you would like to make a contribution or have any questions, please contact Jim McKeown, Chairman, at [email protected] Bronze $500 Silver $2500 Gold $10,000 Mariner Society

Marco Island Yacht Club Friday Golf Group Marco Island Yacht Club has a lot of members who enjoy getting out on the links. In recognition of this, we have a golf club within the yacht club! Every Friday morning a MIYC men’s golf group gets together at one of the local courses to enjoy the beautiful Florida weather and golf. This golfing opportunity has been going strong for many years, probably as long as MIYC has been a private, non-profit yacht club. In the winter and spring when we play at Hibiscus, the weekly participants swell to around 50 players on any given Friday. In the summer, when many in the group head north, some weeks we only have between 12 and 20 for play at The Glades. This weekly activity is open to all Members. For those of you who have no knowledge about our Friday golf, let me tell you that it is right for everyone of us who can still swing a golf club and bend down to pick up a golf ball! It is purely for the fun of being out

together and enjoying each other’s company on a beautiful 18 holes. Additionally, every 4 -6 weeks, we have a $5.00 tournament that usually has three flights. Everyone has a good chance to win. So, please, if you are looking for some friendly golf on a Friday morning, consider joining our group. Call me at 239-970-0273 or Bob Winterhalter at 239-389-0825, for more information and to get signed up. Dick Irwin, Past Commodore

Safety & Training

FORMAL ROUNDTABLE PROGRAMS - COMPLETE I’m pleased to report that our series of four formal Roundtable Programs have been successfully completed. Participating members, numbering 8-10 per session, were enlightened by subject matter experts in the areas of VHF/DSC Radio, Captain’s Responsibilities, ATON’S, Rules of the Road, and Charts. These fun and informative mid-day programs were conducted in the pleasant air of the Burgee Bar, followed by continued discussion over lunch. A special thanks to our subject matter experts, Jim Olmes and Laurie Harris! If you weren’t able to attend one of these programs, we hope you will join us for a new series of programs next season. Details will follow. 2018 VESSEL SAFETY CHECKS

Geoff Walker Safety & Training

The Marco Island Sailing and Power Squadron, and the Coast Guard Auxiliary, offer certified vessel examiners to perform a free Vessel Safety Check at your boat (see insert below for contact information). There are no consequences if you don’t pass, and once any safety issues have been corrected, your examiner will schedule a return appointment to complete the check and issue your boat decal and certificate. Decals and certificates expire December 31 of each year, so repeat Safety Checks need to be performed annually. Once you have passed a safety inspection, or if you have previously passed a safety inspection, please contact me so I can count your vessel as completed. Geoff Walker (678) 296-5233, or at [email protected].

Courtesy vessel inspections are provided by the Power Squadron and the Coast Guard Auxiliary Inspections cover US Coast Guard required safety equipment.

Did you know Americans drink Chardonnay more than any other white wine, nearly 840 million bottles a year with Pinot Grigio running a distant second at 348 million bottles? Across the United States there has been an upsurge in white wine/rose sales and here at our Club we have seen an 11% increase in white wine/rose consumption from 2017 to 2018. (This does include outside banquets.) Why the nationwide consumption increase in these wines? Mark Aubert, a Napa native who makes some of the most sought after Chardonnays says, “Once you have enjoyed a ripe, full bodied Chardonnay or White Burgundy, we become like the wine, balanced and nuanced, showing our remarkable elegance.” That certainly sounds like a good answer. Here are some wine facts to ponder: A) Wine is fat-free and cholesterol-free. B) California has more chardonnay grapes than any place in the world. C) The wreck of the Titanic holds the oldest wine cellar in the world, and despite the wreckage and the depth, the bottles are still intact. D) Two new studies have shown that polyphenols in wine (and chocolate!) increase blood flow and oxygen to the brain, boosting cognitive ability. The effect gets even more beneficial as you age, since there is a natural reduction in blood supply around the brain later in life. All the more reason to have a glass of ‘medicine’ and a little dessert every chance you get. Hint, hint. E) The lip of a red wine glass is sloped inward to capture the aromas of the wine and deliver them to your nose.

more mature wine offers a more subtle “bouquet.”

H) There is more alcohol in mouthwash than wine. (White mouthwash sales are up as well!) I) A standard glass of dry red wine contains around 110 calories for white there can be 160. Sweeter wine has more calories. J) Don’t keep your wine bottle standing up – this can cause the cork to dry, shrink and oxygen\air might get in the bottle. Always keep the bottles lying down. The Summer has been wonderful so far with several successful member events, lots of reciprocal activity and rave reviews for our Small Plates Evening. Our financial numbers continue to show the fruits of our labor and before you know it, we will be back in full season. See you at the Club AND if you have never tried one of our Wine & Dine Events, please do during Season! I will always have more fun facts about wine, as well as great food parings to enhance your experience. Chef Bob

The number of visitors to the Marina have now dropped off for the Summer. They are down from 21 during July to only 3 scheduled for August. We’re in the middle of our typical “ T r o p i c a l I s l a n d ”

are flexible and will stretch significantly, which is good for absorbing shocks but must be remembered when tying a boat off of a dock or piling. If your boat is in the Marina, and you are gone for the hurricane season you must designate a responsible firm or individual to prepare and care for your vessel and the marina slip. You must also furnish the Marina Association with the name, address, telephone number, and e-mail address of such firm or individual. Vessels are allowed to remain in the Marina during a named storm provided that they and the slip are properly secured. The Dockmaster has the authority to close the Marina in advance of an approaching storm. This means that no persons or pets will be allowed to remain on their vessel during a named storm. The water connections to the docks will be shut off and the dock ramps disconnected and placed on shore. So… prepare, relax and stay cool. weather, and most of our boaters seem to prefer the less severe Spring and Fall Florida weather that is perfect for boating. Speaking of severe, we are now at the threshold of our hurricane season. This should all be second nature to Florida residents, but some reminders on how to prepare your boat for a hurricane are always welcome. We are all aware of removing all loose items on deck, removing canvas tops, tying down all sails. Lines should be doubled up and at an appropriate length and angle to allow for the rise and fall of water levels. Last year just before Irma’s eye struck Marco Island the water was sucked out of the river, bays and canals leaving some boats sitting on the bottom. An item often overlooked is the age of the dock lines. If your lines have been out in the Florida sun for 2 or more years, they should be replaced. Goods lines
