MI YC Ex t ended Cru i s e r s ù Ad v en t ur e s i n Ke y We s t and Ma r a t hon By Kelley Wentworth
On November 1st, 45 MIYC Members departed for a fun-filled week in the Florida Keys. Mother nature cooperated quite nicely for our flotilla of boats. The majority of cruisers set off to Key West together around 8:30 after doing a sunrise photo shoot near Big Marco Pass. Many of the captains invited land cruisers to join them for the ride. Most of the boaters stayed on their vessels in the marinas while ride-alongs and land cruisers checked into nearby hotels. The Flotilla was led by Captain Jim Marr. Many thanks to the Randalls, Rosenbergs, Wallens and Everitts for volunteering their beautiful yachts for us to gather together to share nibbles, docktails and a lot of laughs before heading off to dinner together! We were all eager to help our two birthday girls, Joan Gorman and Ellie Everitt celebrate their special day. (Continued on next page)
! 2
The Key West days were packed with a lot of options along with ever popular shopping choice. Many of us took part in an exclusive rum distillery tour and tasting, lost treasure escape room challenge, a private cigar factory tour where many Members rolled their own cigars, an after dinner comedy show poking fun at yacht clubbers and successful fishing trips on the Morrison’s boat where the day’s catch was eagerly sampled as an appetizer by many lucky Members. After a fun-packed and busy 3 days in Key West we set our course for Marathon to relax for a few days. Peggy Frazier led an aquafit class, others relaxed by the pool playing Mah-Jongg and sipping cocktails. Several members found new treasures on their shopping adventures. All hands were on deck where we dined together each night and shared many wonderful stories. This wonderful trip included new friends, old friends, lots of laughs, and good times where many wonderful memories were created! Our Club has a very active cruise schedule open to all Full and Equity Members. Please join us for all the fun!

MIYC Day Cruise Aboard the Dolphin Explorer
By Peggy Frazier Over 40 MIYC Members set sail with the Dolphin Explorer on November 13 - a new and fascinating adventure. After a yummy luncheon the attendees were picked up right at the Yacht Club for an afternoon of dolphin delights! The Dolphin Explorer is a 47-ft. catamaran powered by two 300 HP outboards capable of carrying up to 49 passengers. Because of its design, it is perfect for both navigating the water of the Gulf and the backwater estuaries of the area. The goals and objectives of the 10,000 Island Dolphin Survey team are to track and monitor the social behavior, movement, genealogy and habits of the bottlenose dolphin population in the waters surrounding Marco Island. We got to know some of our area dolphins - their names and who their relatives are as we cruised the waters of Marco Island. The dolphins are recognized by their dorsal fins which serve as their fingerprint. The Moms and the babies were so much fun to watch. Kent and Michael gave us great commentary and information about the bird population and our magical sea shells and presented us with photos of our dolphins. We all agreed that this is a day cruise that should be repeated!

Exciting Boater's Night! Thursday, December 5th Hear hair-raising first hand stories about the "Mac Race," the longest annual fresh water sailboat race in the world! Dear MIYC Members, More than 350 sailboats leave Chicago each July to race 333 miles to Mackinac Island, and 26 times Commodore Jeff Comeaux has been among them. He has experienced everything from the boredom of being caught in the doldrums to the sheer terror of surfing down enormous waves during a ferocious thunderstorm in the dead of night when every lightning flash reveals how close you are to colliding with another boat. Doing the Mac race is an experience you don't forget! Last year, sailors traveled to Chicago from 621 different cities, 38 states and 12 countries to participate in the race that's a Bucket List event for many an America's Cup winner. At Boater's Night, Jeff will share photos, video clips and tales of his experience with this storied
race. We hope to see you there! Geoff Walker - Rear Commodore

Let’s Eliminate the Cost of Paper Statements in the Mail! Postage, paper, envelopes, administrative time—it all adds up! Many MIYC Members receive their MIYC monthly statement both by email and through the mail. We ask that all Members who have email accounts consider dropping the paper mailing to help the Club save time and money! If you still receive a paper statement, please contact Carlota Sanchez, MIYC Accounting, at 239-394-0199 Ext. 306 or [email protected] and tell her you no longer need your statement in the mail. Then when you receive your next email statement, you can either print your statement for your file

Noon Bridge
If you are like me, you remember learning to play bridge in college and then there was the “social” bridge at night or on a lucky day when you could get time off from your busy schedule. Then came an even busier time in my life with work, so many kid’s activities, and bridge went by the wayside. Well, it is time to get back in the swing of it. If you play bridge, have ever played bridge, or even want to learn how to play bridge, MIYC is the place to do it. We have a very lively group of “social” bridge players. New Members are most welcome! There is no pressure to remember everything about the game and there are willing teachers to help you remember and learn. We play every Wednesday at noon if there are at least four of us available to play. Chef Bob serves us an amazing “surprise” lunch before we begin play. Call or e-mail me at: 239-389-0825 [email protected]

MIYC Fishing Club Thursday, December 12 th 11:30am Equity and Full Members welcome. Please call the Club for Reservations 239-394-0199
On the Key West/Marathon Cruise in November, Fishing Club Members ventured out aboard Tom Morrison’s 42’ Center Console “Infinity.” Our offshore trolling for Dolphin, Wahoo and Sailfish was a bust….not one fish! But the next day, chumming for Yellowtail near the Marquesas’ Keys brought most of the fish in the ocean around the boat! Schools of baitfish, Yellowtail, Dolphin, Cero Mackerel, Triggerfish, Kingfish, Sharks, Goliath Grouper, Bonita. An awesome day and the fish box was filled. We had enough fillets to provide the 45 Cruisers a treat that night at the Commodores Restaurant/ Key West. And back in Marco, Chef Bob and Staff prepared more of our catch, served Family Style to 16 Fishing Club members at the Burgee Bar for our November Fishing Club Lunch. On the local scene , as we move into cooler weather, the fishing will change. With water temperatures dipping into the 70’s, the pelagic fish bite will pick-up significantly offshore. In November, Fishing Club Members made two offshore trips in the 45-50 mile range and experienced excellent fishing for Red Grouper, Red Snapper, Cero Mackerel and Barracuda. On both trips, the boat limited out on Red Grouper catch … great eating that night. Fishing for Amberjack (AJ’s) King Mackerel, Cobia, Tripletail can be successful near structure (natural and artificial). For Tripletail, expect a strong bite near shore at the crab pots (they’re everywhere). Tripletail are GREAT
eating and very easy to catch. We will discuss strategy at our next meeting. Backwater fishing is red-hot right now. Fishing Club members are experiencing excellent Snook, Redfish and Sea Trout fishing in 10,000 islands. The key is to get far away from any red tide impact area (e.g. go south of Everglade City) and find clear moving water. You will need a skinny boat to fish these areas. Starting in January, the Fishing Club will begin organized local fishing trips – b a c kwa t e r a nd o f f s ho r e ( we a t h e r permitting) . In February, we are planning a trip to Islamorada to fish for monster Blackfin and Yellowfin Tuna in the Gulf Stream. In April and July, the Fishing Club is planning organized Tarpon Fishing in Islamorada. In past trips, everyone caught a large Tarpon. And finally, we are planning another trip to Stuart in September. We will fish for the “bull” Snook that populate the St. Lucie River when the finger mullet spawn . We also are likely to catch Tarpon. Large Jack Cravelle and the occasional Shark (he’s eating everything in the area). This is quite an experience. Keep a watch for emails that will provide more details on the above. If you are Social Member and would like to join the Fishing Club and start fishing with us, please contact Cynthia Hultquist (Membership Coordinator) at 239-394-0199 to learn about upgrading to a Full Boating Membership.

Bob Aylwin - Manager/Executive Chef
Great news! Several of you have reached out to express the desire for new concepts, a more evolving rotation of food items and menus, along with an overall wish for more choices and higher end selections. Chef John and I hear you loud and clear. Watch for updates about our new “Blue Plate Prime Program” where we will be highlighting some of the more exclusive cuts of Prime Beef and Veal such as Japanese Wagyu A5 and the buttery marbling of Snake River American Wagyu as well. “Just for the Halibut” and other exotic fish will also be onboard as well, as we realize our rotation of Grouper (our most popular selection), Salmon, Sole, Swordfish, Mahi Mahi, Snapper and Sea Bass can become redundant. The Culinary Team (John, Lupe and I) are excited about this new program, I hope you will be, too. Now that Christmas time is upon us, I have been reflecting on how wonderful this time of year can be. I realize that there are many less fortunate than I and that is why I think the work our Club does with Toys for Tots warms my heart. The food drives and overall help we give is inspiring. Thank you to all who participate in these noble causes. Christmas Memories and the Sugar Cookie I was a lucky kid, being the oldest I was allowed to toil along with my mother as she went about the business of making Christmas Dinner for our family from our modest little kitchen in Springfield, MA. I can still smell her apple cider steaming on the stove and remember the delight I would get when she would let me drop a little candy cane into it for that pepperminty touch that she loved so. I can still see the ham glistening with brown sugar and toasty cloves. I can see my mother now, mashing the sweet potatoes with honey and butter, the sweet aromas of nutmeg, cinnamon and happiness filling the air. Every now and again she would call for me to either grab a couple of eggs from the refrigerator or to pass her the eggnog. I remember smiling a lot as I watched this incredible woman enjoying every moment, every detail of the holiday season.
Later, Mom would sit down in our living room and rest a bit as Christmas music filled the air and we waited for family and friends to arrive. Soon I would be pinched and hugged by relatives and friends whom I wish I had seen more of throughout the year. Mom would insist that my younger brothers and sister line up at the front door and smile and say “Merry Christmas” to all of our arriving
Bob Aylwin Manager/Executive Chef
guests, a tradition as old as the sugar cookie itself. I would settle in with cousins my age and watch as everyone put the troubles of the world behind them making the simple decision to just cherish the moment. Mom would give out instructions to her new, older and more experienced kitchen helpers. Aunt Barbara would grab the apricot stuffing, Gram would get the homemade orange cranberry sauce and Dad would get his cutting board ready for the turkey and glazed ham. A culinary professional in the making, I would watch and learn and like a symphony in perfect harmony, our Christmas Buffet would come together like the Boston Pops Orchestra playing Silent Night. We would laugh and sing whiling enjoying the culinary fruits of Mom’s labor until our bellies were ready to burst, then eat a couple of her sugar cookies for good measure. Yes, Christmas time in our home brought family and friends together like no other time of the year. I love Christmas and all that comes with it; the lights, the songs, the shows, the great food and drink, all of it. It makes me grateful for family and friends. I want to wish all members of MIYC a safe and happy holiday. Cherish the moment. Chef Bob

Commodore
As my year as Commodore draws to a close, I can’t help but reflect on what a wonderful year it has been. Thanks to our terrific Bridge and Boating Committee—and the enthusiasm and camaraderie of MIYC Members—we had record participation at boating events this year, from luncheon and sunset cruises to our overnight cruises to more distant ports. Our most memorable trips this year included heading north to Boca Grande and Venice, a trip east to the Atlantic side via Lake Okeechobee and our fabulous trip to Key West and Marathon just last month. Day Cruises to other clubs and waterfront restaurants as well as Sunset Cruises in the balmy Gulf evenings were always a treat. We lost only one Sunset cruise due to weather ( a major storm that killed two palm trees in our backyard from a lightning strike), however even then there was no cancellation and we had a great dinner on the Burgee Bar watching the storm. Looking ahead, the Boating Committee has done an outstanding job vetting new destinations for 2020. Our March extended cruise to the Bahamas will be the highlight of the new year.
But the year is not over yet— we have several highlights still to come this year! On December 8 it’s a “Staycation” where you can visit some beautiful yachts in the Marina, and on December 21 the spectacular Boat Parade is a true favorite. Keep a watch on eblasts that will provide more details. Finally, on January 18, Carol and I hope to see you at the
Jeff Comeaux Commodore
Commodores Ball. This will be a fabulous evening filled with great music, dancing, an incredible dinner prepared by Chef Bob, and the official induction of Ray Rosenberg as our Club’s new Commodore. It has been a privilege to serve you as Commodore in 2019. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

The Ugly Christmas Sweater Contest is always a fun experience when on Dec 6, Individuals and couples can show off their creativity. This year, the Toys for Tots collection garnered $2,000! Santa will be present to greet the Members at the Holiday Dinner on Dec 7 where the toys will be displayed. Members can bring an unwrapped gift that evening to add to the collection box. And the treat of the evening is that the Sandlins will perform and lead us in a holiday sing along. The Marco Island Street Parade on December 14 th this year will feature our Sailing School. Children who participated in the sailing lessons will march with a Marco Island Yacht Club sailboat and Members of the Bridge. After viewing the parade, a light dinner will be served at the Club.

Chairman’s Report
As I write this column, we are looking forward to Thanksgiving. I hope each of you and your families are able to spend time together and take a minute to recognize all that we have to be thankful for this year. We completed the Annual Meeting in November. Attendance was equal to the record turnout last year. Voting Members approved some small changes to the Bylaws and elected two Members to the open seats on the Board. Tom Jobe and Dave Everitt were elected to three-year terms, beginning in January. Thank you to the individuals that participated in the election and to the Nominating and Governing Committee for another well-run election! The most significant portion of time during the Annual Meeting was a presentation of the proposal to proceed with the new Marina. You can find the Annual Meeting presentation on the MIYC website. There were a number of good questions during the presentation. At the conclusion of the presentation, the voting members affirmed the proposal to proceed with the Marina with a near unanimous vote. Again, I appreciate the questions and input to the project, and look forward to keeping the membership appraised of progress as we proceed. December is just around the corner, and events and activities at the Club are going full blast! We had a great extended cruise to Key West and Marathon in November, and there is a short trip to Naples Sailing and Yacht and a trip to South Seas and Boca Grande in February. If you have not yet participated in an Extended Cruise, I recommend you consider doing so. Our planning team does an excellent job arranging for activities for cruisers. And, there is no better way to get to know other Members than on a cruise. Whether you have a boat or are a ‘land cruiser’, be sure to check the cruising schedule in this month’s Ancho Lines for upcoming trips. With the return of season, and a number of Members returning to the island, it is also a good time to remind everybody to review the house rules and dress code. One item I do want to make sure you
n o t e i s t h a t we d o appreciate reservations for dining. Our kitchen and staff are set up to handle most anything. However, when everybody wants to eat at the same time, it gets hard to make sure we all get the service we have come to expect at the Club. Reservations allow us to provide an exceptional dining experience. Thank you for your supporting this request. Another item I would
Dave Everitt Chairman
recommend relates to the employee Christmas fund. As we have done in prior years, we will be adding $75 to your December invoice. This is an entirely voluntary payment, and if you do not want to contribute, just indicate so on your return payment information. However, I do hope you will consider not only accepting the recommended $75 amount, but also consider adding to that amount. Our employees do an amazing job. They not only handle normal food service, they also set up and tear down for banquets and dining at the Club. The employee Christmas fund allows all of us to say ‘Thank you’ to each member of the Staff. I hope you will join me in making sure our employees know how much we appreciate them at this time of the year! Finally, I want to thank all of you for your support in my candidacy for another term on the Board. I am mindful of the trust and confidence that comes with that support. I will continue to work diligently to make sure I fulfill your expectations every day! Looking forward to seeing you at the Club this Holiday Season! Dave Everitt

Enhancements to your Equity Membership
We have some really exciting news for Equity members. First, many of you have asked to have some form of recognition for being an Equity member. Your Membership Committee working with the Board of Directors has subtly redesigned the Equity name badge adding a line showing that you are an Equity Member. If you would like to have your name badge replaced, please send an email to Cynthia Hultquist at [email protected] showing how you would like your name to read on the new badge. You will then exchange your former badge for the new badge. Also, you may remember that the wine bin program was modified so that only Equity members are allowed to have bins on the property. Below are the instructions for the new program. Wine Bin Program The Wine Bin Program is for Equity Members only. The wine is stored in our temperature-controlled cabinets. Red wines are stored at a temperature between 58-62 degrees and white wines are stored at a temperature between 48-52 degrees. An Equity Member can have one free wine bin either red or white that holds two standard 750ml bottles of wine. • Additional wine bins may be rented for one year at $50 per bin. • The corkage fee is $10 per bottle. • You may restock your bin as many times as you want. • Your name will be placed on the bin. • Only authorized staff will be allowed to stock the bins or withdraw the wine when requested. • Members are not allowed to access the wine cabinets. • If you want to use a bottle of wine on a Friday Evening, please order it in advance when you make your reservation so that your server can have it available for you. • Wine Bin Procedures An Equity Member who would like to participate in the wine bin program should e-mail the Front of House Manager at [email protected] with the following information. • Requesting use of your free wine bin please provide your name, member number and whether you would like a red or white wine bin. • If you are renting an additional wine bin, please provide the same information as above. Your account will be charged the appropriate amount. • Your wine bottles must have your name attached. Bring them in only to Pam Dorr, Tina Carano, Nicolas Fournier or Cynthia Hultquist. • A log will be kept on all wine bins.

When preparing for a trip, there always will be a last-minute need to carry fresh produce and such onto the boat. But the more provisions that already are there, the simpler trip preparation becomes. Nowadays, shelf-stable products are plentiful and tasty. When you’re out grocery shopping for home, keep an eye out for interesting shelf-stable products to try. Buy a sample and determine if it’s worthy of having on board. Our local Super Walmart, for example, carries Parmalat Milk – whole milk, 2 percent and one percent - in the baking section. These need refrigeration only after opening. For making yogurt, some cruisers prefer powdered milk. There’s also instant buttermilk powder that can be used for making everything from pancakes to Crème Fraiche. If you want quick pancakes, there’s pancake mix in a small jug – just add water and shake. Trader Joe’s has shelf-stable whipping cream in small waxed cartons. Minced garlic in a jar is convenient to have and will not need refrigeration until open. Organic chicken stock from Costco and organic beef broth from Trader Joe’s – both in a box - are very good. Canned chicken breast is excellent for chicken salad and hot chicken dishes like pot pies, chicken soup, chicken a la king, etc. It’s available at Walmart and in larger quantities at Costco and Sam’s. Foil packets of Albacore Tuna store well and are nice to have on board for tuna salad and for hot dishes such as penne with tuna, capers and white wine. Costco has a gigantic plastic container of a variety of dried mushrooms for $12.95. We have tried reconstituting them at home and using them in various recipes with positive results. Even the broth produced in the final soaking is great for mushroom gravy. We’ll transfer a

box; condensed portobella mushroom soup in a small box; a variety of dried fruits, nuts and other goodies.
Last but not least, Skinny Pop popcorn now comes ready to pop in your microwave – much easier to store and much fresher longer than a big bag. It even creates a theater-style cardboard box to serve it! At the January 15 Boaters Night, our featured speaker is fellow member Bill Schroeder, a well- traveled cruiser with much Bahamas experience. He will give a presentation to help prepare us for our March Exumas cruise. Linda and I will be bringing an array of some of the provisions mentioned in this article, and would like to encourage input from our fellow boaters of provisions you enjoy having on board. Seas the day with MIYC . . . Are you ready to cruise - eat - talk - laugh - smile - and have a good time?
MIYC Day Cruises are to destinations that are nearby and provide the opportunity to join Members on their boats for a scenic cruise and lunch. The Yachts enjoy wildlife views, playful dolphins, and a beautiful view of our Island paradise as well as spectacular homes. MIYC Extended Cruises are scheduled so that you can participate in part or all of the itinerary. Land Cruisers are welcome to join us by car or ride along on a vessel and we will arrange for hotel accommodations either at the marina or nearby. Some boaters also prefer to stay on shore. The availability of slips, particularly during the season, is always an issue so make your reservations (or just let us know that you are interested so we can keep you informed about the latest plans) now by clicking [email protected] or calling 906 227 7625 so you don't miss the fun! We will be doing a raft up to learn new anchoring techniques, as well as opportunities close by at the Naples Sailing and Yacht Club, the Naples Yacht Club, and Pelican Isle Yacht Club. Also on the schedule is our most popular trip to South Seas and the surrounding
areas such as ‘Tween Waters, Useppa, and Cabbage Key. Our Bahamas trip includes the option of taking your own boat or going with the group by air to the Bahamas where we will charter 51' luxury yachts with assigned Captains and sail short trips to lovely destinations in the beautiful Abacos. In April 2020 we will return to incredible Boca Grande and plans are in the works for a cruise to the Sarasota area as well. All Full Members are invited to join the fun and put new life and laughter into your time on the water! If you have not cruised in this area before you will be able to learn from experienced cruisers and have a relaxing trip. We are on our way to amazing boating adventures this season! We hope the schedule for Extended and Day Cruises inspires you to hop aboard and fall in love with boating at the MIYC. It is amazing where our boats can take us in this destination where winter never visits - at least for very long! Trips like this one epitomize what the MIYC is all about...great camaraderie, new friends, great food, and the opportunity to share our love of boating....join the fun!
