Cheers to 20 Years!

Our Welcome Back Signature Event, Cheers to 20 Years, was held on November 7. For the first time we did a live webcam of the presentations in the Harbour Room and projected them to TV screens on the lanai and at the Pointe. Jon Holt did the technical work, and we are hoping to continue this process during Covid19 for those who prefer to sit outdoors for dining.

The evening was well received by the more than 100 attendees. Tom Wentworth, as well as Jim and Jan Rich worked on a skit where the theme from TV series The Love Boat was reproduced with our Members and our Club itself as the stars. Then the Members had their chance to sing the new Club "Alma Mater". Here is the link to the new Club song! https://youtu.be/ilmwUVeePno Alan Sandlin, who is on the Board of the Marco Island Historical Society, secured priceless early photos of Marco Island and of the Yacht Club to do a retrospective from the earliest days of Marco and the Club. It was a brilliant presentation with photos of Charter Members evoking fond memories. There were recognitions of the Club's first Members who are still Members today; and a plaque presented to Don Mills, the first Commodore. Don also was one of the Members who gathered the 200 investors who bought the Club and made it a Member-owned entity. Elaine Chisenall was honored with a bouquet of flowers for her 20 years as a hostess and receptionist. Chairman Dave Everitt and Commodore Ray Rosenberg made the presentations. Our entertainment was provided by the Michael Nardi Trio and a vocalist, Rick Townsend, who sang tunes from the Great American Song Book for the audience. It was indeed a special night and our press release with many photos was printed in the Eagle and the Coastal Breeze showing Marco Island that the Yacht Club is not just surviving, rather it is thriving.

The new seawall panels are held in place through the use of special anchors driven into the soil under the Club. The anchors are driven in at an angle of about 25 degrees and are dr iven into sol id soi l conditions or about 25 feet. The anchors are placed about every 6 to 8

If you have been around the Club since mid- October, you have seen a lot of activity associated with the marina project! Our contractor, Kelly Brothers Incorporated (KBI) of Fort Myers, began setting new seawall panels as soon as Tropical Storm Eta left the area. As you can see in the nearby pictures, they have made a good start. The process of refurbishing our seawall includes setting fiber panels about 18" from the existing seawall and driving them about 6 feet into the seabed. The 'riprap' (stones placed in the water to add strength to the existing seawall) will be pulled back to allow the new panels to be driven into the specified depth, then additional 'riprap' will be added to protect the new seawall panels.

feet. You can see in a nearby picture places where cutouts in the existing seawall have been made for the anchor installation. A new seawall cap will be poured over both the existing seawall cap and the new panels to complete the seawall refurbishment. The top of the new cap will be about 1 foot higher than the current cap. The refurbished seawall begins at the southwest corner of the Club and will extend to the Sailing Center Deck. Both MIMA and MIYC are participating in the seawall refurbishment along the river side of the Club and parking lot. KBI's initial schedule suggested they would start on the seawall in December, so having a mid- November start is good news! We do have protective fencing up in the area as you can see in the pictures. Please do not walk behind the fencing. It is an active construction zone, and we don't want any injuries from curious Club members! You can get a great view of the progress from the upper lanai. We will keep you posted on the progress! The new panels are a woven fiber material used in many projects like ours. The space between the new panes and the existing seawall will be filled with aggregate. The aggregate strengthens the combined new and old seawall panels.

Commodore

My term as your Commodore is coming to an end, but before I begin my next chapter for the Marco Island Yacht Club, I’d like to tell you that this chapter has meant everything to my wife Linda and me, and has been one of my most wonderful life’s experiences! We started the year off with a bang, gathering in record-breaking numbers for the Change of Watch and Commodore’s Ball. Next came a very successful Blessing of the Fleet with great attendance, lovely weather and no one ran aground. The 2020 Cruising Schedule started with a trip to Naples Sailing and Yacht

Club, and then an Extended Cruise in February to Boca Grande and South Seas Resort. Then the doors were slammed shut by the COVID-19 Virus. Our Club even had to close its doors for a portion of time. However, through excellent Management and Members’ generosity, we supported our employees and established COVID preventive procedures which we continue to use today. Local Florida cruising came to a halt, but your Vice Commodore Geoff Walker pulled off a very successful March charter cruise in the Exumas. Kudos to Geoff! Fast forward to October where we held a successful Boaters Night and one again in November. Another is scheduled for this month. Sunset Cruises will begin this month and we are hoping these events will be able to continue. Yes, it was a struggle to get through this difficult year and we all will be glad when we can say goodbye to 2020. None of our positive Club accomplishments could have happened without all of our dedicated Staff and Volunteers, especially those on the Board of Directors and our fantastic Bridge. Join a Cowboy, a Pro, a School Teacher and an Old Goat as they navigate the hazards of weather, equipment failures and ill luck to stay on course. Be a fly on the wall below decks as sailors plot their strategies. Watch the wind screaming through the rigging, and the icy spray flying. Hang on with the crew for dear life as the A superb dinner will be created by Chef Bob for the occasion. I have made sure that the menu will not include goat, old or young. THE GREAT ESCAPE OR (What ever happened to Tom Wentworth and the bear?) By Jim Rich

Although the bear had now caught up to him, he was not able to climb the trunk and reach Tom. Tom unfortunately did not have his cellphone and there was no one within shouting distance. After almost 2 hours, no one in sight, and no sign of the bear giving up, Tom thought he would try something to scare the bear off: He began to sing our New Club Song with the Love Boat Theme. Of course, this only made the bear angrier, as its growling intensified as if to challenge Tom to a singing contest. At this point, several other fishermen showed up, hearing the ongoing duet that apparently scared any fish away and woke up the surrounding area. The bear ran off and Tom was driven to a local hospital for several stitches. Now, other than letting you know that Tom is OK, I do have a request of you: Tom, as you know, is an immensely proud man. It may be several weeks before he can comfortably sit. When you see him, you may want to inconspicuously offer him a pillow or help him to his chair. Also, he may be walking a little funny, so please do not stare at his buttocks. I would hate for him to be too self-conscious. Thank you for your time and understanding.

Dear Friends, For those of you who were fortunate enough to attend our 20 th Anniversary Party, you were privy to hear about the exploits of our Rear Commodore, Tom Wentworth, and his attempt to escape from the bear that had entered his ice fishing cabin while trying to write and send us our new club song. I have had several calls and emails from concerned club members, asking whatever happened to Tom? After Jan I left the club, we tried contacting him until 3:00 am, when he finally answered the phone. Apparently, the bear that had climbed through the cabin window was now blocking Tom’s escape through the door. Tom, not being a small man, was then forced to squeeze himself out the same window the bear had just come through. Although Tom finally got through, it was not without several swipes of the bear’s paw to Tom’s derriere. Thinking he was now safe, Tom slowly began walking across the frozen pond toward his car. Unfortunately, he forgot that if the bear could come through the window into the cabin, it could also get back out. So, Tom began running, slipping and sliding until he reached the shore, where he shimmied up a small tree.

MIYC Goes Country! The Country Jam Session was a rousing night of music and dance. There were areas set up on the lanai in the open air for both dining and dancing. Tom Morrison, Owen O'Shaughnessy and Chef Bob performed country tunes including On the Road Again , Ring of Fire and Bye Bye Love . The crowd went wild. Also performing was Jenny Woodman Duo who played tunes of today for our dancing pleasure. Members arrived in their 'Country' best wearing jeans, boots and cowboy hats. Some had colorful neckties to complete their look. Vicki Bretthauer and Dwyn Von Bereghy collected funds for Toys For Tots. The Salvation Army this year has requested monetary gifts rather than toys because of Covid safety protocols.

It was so nice to see so many of our Members at our Annual Member Meeting, either in person or via Zoom! Magnus Clacton receives the prize as tuning in from Sweden, he kind of “traveled” the farther! New Members who I would like to feature this month are the ones who are purchasing slips in our Riverside Marina! Jim Anderson is coming to us from the East Coast of Florida. He has stopped by the Club recently! Michael Jurgielewicz has purchased a slip but he is still working. In the meantime, you may see his parents, Dr. Joe and Rita , around the Club. Tom and Rosemary Noble have also joined the Club as they have purchased a slip in the marina! They are local so we hope to see them often as they check on the progress of the marina! Remember that Member Recruiting Members is still in place so be sure to recommend friends to join our Club. You and your friends will receive $100 gift certificates if your recommended members join the Club and pay joining fees! Our other activities like Fla-mingling are on hold until COVID is under control. In the meantime, stay safe, wave at your friends across the dining

room and come to your Club often! Social members, the Board has again approved a “Holiday Sale” for upgrading to Full Membership! Be on the lookout for more

information in the coming weeks! There also will be a Day Cruise that you can attend in February so you can sample what it is like to be a Full Member! Finally, with being a member of a Club, the main thing we need to remember is that we are MHM, M embers H elping M embers! If you need anything during this pandemic, please let us know - shopping, rides, someone to walk the dog, someone to sit down with you for a glass of wine - members are here to help other members! MIYC Member Events By Angela Holt

Well, this has been a challenge of a year for our Member Events. But the events have been thriving, not just surviving. We have a dedicated group of women and men some who have been with Member Events t h r oughou t t hese pas t f ou r yea r s . I t hank them wholeheartedly. When the Club closed due to Covid in March, we had to reschedule our Hollywood Night and Kentucky Derby Hats and Horses. But, we will revisit them, rest assured. Hollywood Night in all its glory will be held on March 20, 2021; a Mariners Formal Gala Fundraiser. You will not want to miss this one. We are pulling out all the stops. Our hopes will be to continue to raise the funds for the refurbishment of our Club. Being mindful of Covid 19 protocols we continued with events in June, July and August with karaoke, trivia and several summer dances and now throughout the Fall we started with the reveal of our Harbour Room in bright new colors and new chandeliers compliments of the Mariners Fund. We tried out a movie under the stars, a small but exciting Halloween dinner and then the Signature Event, Welcome Back Cheers to 20 Years. Again we made the evening a retrospective of the past two decades. It was a night of memorabilia, recognitions and music; a wonderful historical view of our Club by Alan Sandlin and the creation of our Love Boat alma mater by Tom Wentworth and Jim and Jan Rich . The Coastal Breeze and the Eagle printed a two page press release of our story and pictures telling Marco Island that our Club is flying high. On November 21, we held a Country Jam session with Chef, Tom Morrison and Owen O'Shaughnessy. Jenny Woodman Duo provided the music for the evening and our own trio was jamming at 8:00 PM. We also collect monetary contributions for Toys for Tots (no toys are being collected this year because of Covid). We are heading right into Thanksgiving and the Saturday after Turkey Day with a family casual dinner as part of the menu. Ellie Everitt and a team of Members are now busy decorating the Club for the holidays. On

December 5 we host our Holiday Dinner for members. We will still be collecting for Toys for Tots at that dinner so you are not too late if you still want to donate! The Sandlins will be here to entertain and lead us in holiday songs and Christmas carols. Plan ahead for the Boat Parade on Dec. 12, and the Ugly Christmas Sweater event on December 18. The crowning event will be a lovely Christmas Eve Dinner.

New Year’s Eve, with hope, will usher in a better year than 2020 for all of us. We will be here ringing in 2021 with the Classics 2. The New Year brings us the wonderful Commodore's Ball, Valentine's Dinner and Dance, Karaoke and finally our Hooray for Hollywood Formal Gala Signature Event. Also, in 2021 there are plans for evenings with a comedian, magician, trivia, a make-up lesson with a NYC stylist and more. At the beginning of each month, we will be sending a calendar of events and a Save The Date for the upcoming month. You can print them out. Also, you can always see the calendar in Anchorlines or on the website under Member Central which will give you the entire year of events. We will not be defeated by Covid but we will exercise good judgment. So, as always make your reservations early and be here to join the fun. Remember, without you, there is no fun!

Getting to Know You Our Sous Chef John Riggs By M.A. Harlacker John Riggs was born in Pontiac Michigan on April 6, 1978, and spent his formative years there. He graduated from Walled Lake Central High Michigan, and now resides in Florida. Family members came down here to SW Florida and bought a couple lots on the island. Eventually his uncle started a carpentry business called Carpentry 1.

John feels that the best skills he brings to the job are “Showing up on time every day, getting the job done cleanly and efficiently.” Then, “Going home and doing it all again the next day.” A typical day at MIYC includes, “Focusing on doing my best not to kill myself with the sharp knives and all the fire. “When not at the YC, John likes to go fishing and spending time at the beach. He enjoys playing poker, enjoys any kind of card games, and has been playing chess most of his life. John’s future ambitions: “I would love to win the lotto. I would love to do more traveling, I will also return to Michigan one day, just not sure when. “ His personal motto: “Don’t lie. Liars never win. “

Centered around the annual Boating and Bridge Awards, we will assemble an all-star cast of your fellow Members who will poke a little gentle fun at the goings-on of this strange year, and hopefully bring us a little humor to build on for 2021. For every weird thing we had to do, like keeping 6 feet away from Bob Winterhalter at all times, there was something great that happened, like the beginning of the Marina Project. For every painful memory, like the imposition of the mask-wearing rule, there was something much better to remember, like the way Chef Bob improved the menu and the quality of food. Now, if only we could eat Chef’s Jambalaya through those masks.. Seriously, the January Boaters’ Night will be a humorous festival like nothing you’ve ever seen before at a Boaters’ Night. Some aspects of the evening’s program must necessarily be kept a surprise, but, I promise you, it will be a very pleasant surprise. Missing this event would be like missing Halley’s Comet – it only comes around once in a lifetime. (Sorry if that reference went over anyone’s head). This month's Health Infobit is about supplements... By Peggy Frazier If there’s one good thing about 2020, it’s the incredible scientific effort that went into studying the novel coronavirus. Researchers have conducted all sorts of experiments to learn as much as they could about the virus. Hundreds of teams came up with vaccine ideas, dozens of which have now reached the final stage of testing. A handful of those drugs will soon be used on the general population. Diligent hand hygiene, mask wearing, social distancing have become "the new normal" in preventing the spread of Covid-19 as recommended by the CDC. A Covid-19 infection can be summarized by a simple equation: Successful Infection =Exposure to Virus x Time. Quite simply, the amount of time you spend in a place or environment where the virus is lingering can be a huge determinant on whether or not you will get sick. Being outdoors or in a large room with appropriate ventilation is important as is how much time you spend exposed to the virus. Everything you do to limit the severity of the infection...less time, masks, being outdoors helps! Helping to keep the numbers down helps our health care workers. The larger impacts are the number of hospitalizations, which are greatly straining healthcare systems and the unusual longer-term effects of Covid on a significant number of old and young alike – damage to organs (especially heart, lung, and kidney), and months-long recuperation, in many cases. The biggest issue we have with Covid is how contagious it is and the fact that people can be spreading the virus while they do not have symptoms. We are also trying to figure out how and when to test. There is no hard and fast rule, but the evidence suggests getting a test before the third day after exposure is not of much use. The average time is about five days. It's generally thought that you're most infectious the two days before that day and the two days after that. Consider the following options with the guidance of your health practitioner to support your respiratory health and the health of your immune system if you get symptoms: 1. Zinc Lozenges : Completely dissolve in mouth one lozenge containing 18.75 mg of zinc acetate during waking hours. Do not exceed 4 lozenges daily, and do not use for more than three consecutive days. 2. Garlic : Take 9,000 ‒ 18,000 mg of high-allicin garlic each day until symptoms subside. Take with food to minimize stomach irritation. 3. Vitamin D : If you do not already maintain a blood level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D over 50 ng/mL, then take 50,000 IU of vitamin D the first day and continue for three more days and slowly reduce the dose to around 5,000 IU of vitamin D each day. If you already take around 5,000 IU of vitamin D every day, then you probably do not need to increase your intake. 4. Cimetidine : Take 800 ‒ 1,200 mg a day in divided doses. Cimetidine is a heartburn drug that has potent immune support properties. (It is sold in pharmacies over-the-counter.) 5. Melatonin : Take 2 ‒ 10 mg sublingually at bedtime or as needed. Our immune system wanes as we get older, and it becomes more difficult to mount an effective immune response to common germs that younger people can easily expel. e response and making antibodies, like what happens in natural infection. Early results from ongoing trials show that we are able to design vaccines that result in good responses in people over 60. Vaccine efficacy will vary with different vaccine preparations, and we need to choose carefully which formulations will work best in older people, which doses are most effective and when to administer booster vaccinations to achieve the best results. We can assume that the vaccines that complete their testing regimens the vaccines will be safe and effective. We will talk about the options in January as the vaccinations get closer. On a cost/benefit ratio for us oldsters, it will help us get back to our new normal.
