February 2018 Volume 18:2

Evening Colors - Change of Watch - The Commodoreùs Ball

The Change of Watch at the MIYC was full of pomp and circumstance. A full Colors ceremony was followed by the Change of Watch - Installation of the new Bridge. Six Past Commodores were present. After the ceremonies in the courtyard, revelers went upstairs for an evening of dining and dancing. A big thank you to Bob and his Staff for a wonderful evening. Thanks also to Mary McKeown for the lovely table decorations.

Although the January Extended Cruise was cancelled due to weather, the Cruisers still met during the evenings they would have been together. A bit of rain didn’t stop them from some fun!

The Christening of the Burgee Bar on January 13 was a huge success with more than 140 Members attending to witness the ribbon cutting and breaking of the champagne bottle. Contributors to the Mariner’s Fund whose donations were used to refurbish the Burgee Bar, were recognized.

Chairman’s Report

And – we have continued to attract new members. During January, we had a ‘Social Member Step Up’ promotion. Several Social Members took advantage of the offer to step up to Full Membership! And we continue to attract both new members and also some returning (formerly resigned) members. Finally, we rolled out our special membership offer to our friends in MIMA!

What a start to the year! January has been ‘packed’ with events – and everybody I have spoken with has been ‘over the top’ with compliments about activities and events so far this ‘Season’! We kicked off the year with an absolutely stunning New Year’s Eve event. The Staff and Member Events Committee did an excellent job decorating the Club and arranging for entertainment. The next ‘Big Event’ was the Commodore’s Ball. Kudos to outgoing Commodore Lois Dixon and Incoming Commodore Bob Winterhalter for putting together a great evening. Even the Staff had new uniforms to honor the Change of Watch! The Boating groups have been busy – but the weather has not been cooperating. The cruise to Boca Grande and the Isles Yacht Club and the day cruise to Everglades City were scrubbed by rough seas and non-Florida-like weather - but our intrepid boaters managed to adapt! The extended cruise was converted to a ‘Staycation’! Some of the cruisers opened their homes for drinks and dinner, and there was a final night celebration at the Club. The day cruisers drove to the Havana Café instead of boating – more than 40 Club members and guests participated! The ‘grand opening’ for the reconfigured Burgee Bar was held January 13th. It was absolutely a wonderful event, with more than 90 members attending. And, members Frank and Mime Conner have donated a LARGE screen TV for the Bar area – be sure to tell them ‘Thank you!’ when you see them! And don’t forget – we now have extended hours for the Burgee Bar…check the Anchor Lines and Club website for details! Also, a new ‘event’ was created in January with the New England members hosting a ‘Lobsta Night’ to show the rest of us how ‘real’ New Englanders party. Look for more regional member nights in the future. It was a great hit!

Dave Everitt Chairman

A sub-committee of our Strategic Planning work group is hard at work on the effort to re-finance our member- financed mortgage. We have had several members indicate they are interested in investing in a new mortgage, as well as current investors willing to continue their investment. If you would like to have someone review the program with you, please let me know or contact Bill Wallen directly.( [email protected] ) This mortgage re- finance is one of our most important financial issues this year. Successfully completing the project will certainly strengthen our position as we look forward to projects in the next few years. The calendar is full for the rest of this season! Make sure you get reservations in early for upcoming events as we have had to cut off reservations when we reached our capacity limits! Thank you to all who are working so hard to make this Club a place of vitality, camaraderie and fun! Dave Everitt - Chairman

A CALL FOR HELP FROM YOUR CLUB’S BUILDING AND GROUNDS COMMITTEE Chef / Manager Robert and your B & G Comm. could use some expert technical help in monitoring our building’s Fire Alarm, Emergency Lighting, Security, Ballroom Dimmer system or Elevator electronics. If you have a working knowledge of any of these systems, or know of someone who does, or have a keen interest in learning, please contact me. Additionally, if you are experienced in paints, wall coverings, wood repair or refinishing, or know of a Club Member who is, please contact me. Chip Pittman [email protected] 239-302-8732

Also, several of the 2017 Bridge have different positions, as identified elsewhere in this Anchor Lines issue. Thanks to all of the 2017 Bridge for your service. Wow, what a fun filled January at MIYC! Those who attended MIYC’s 16 th Change of Watch Ceremony & Commodore’s Ball had a blast! I want to personally thank our “Ball” implementation committee comprised of Angela Holt, Linda Marr, Carol Comeaux and Mary McKeown for their tireless efforts and contributions leading up to the Ball. A belated, but heart felt, thank you goes to my wife, the Commodorable Diana for getting me prepared last month. This was the first time MIYC saw the Wendy Renee Quartet who played nonstop to an enthusiastic crowd. Bernie Sergesketter taped some highlights of the night and posted on YouTube under 2018 Commodore’s Ball. You may also open the MIYC eblast dated 1/27/2018 @ 7:06AM titled “Enjoy Video Highlights of Last Week’s Commodore’s Ball and Change of Watch” with its link to the video, which will later be followed by its addition to the MIYC website. Another over the top moment at the Ball was the presentation of a beautiful framed portrait of the Jolley Bridge taken from MIYC by Joey Waves and presented by Greg Pascale, Joey Waves & Erin Mia Milchman as a thank you from Marco Patriots for MIYC’s post Irma fund raising efforts. There were a dozen other great events we attended, setting a record high on our MIYC statement!

Day Cruise

Ahoy MIYC Members! Our newly formed Boating Committee is hard at work managing the Extended and Day Cruises. We want to continue to provide new and pleasing destinations such as our most recent Day Cruise to the Havana Café in Chokoloskee. We had 40 Members participate in the lunch outing at the café. The staff truly lived up to the reputation of being friendly and accommodating - not to mention the food was fantastic! The next Day Cruise is to the Island Gypsy on the Isles of Capri. This Day Cruise is becoming a favorite of MIYC Members. The restaurant has a fantastic waterside dining area with a terrific menu - you may just think you’re in the Florida Keys! This cruise is scheduled for Monday February 12th . Look for the E-blast coming out shortly with more information. Fair winds and following seas, Sailing Fleet Captain Chip Pittman [email protected]

Aquafit at MIYC Aquafit classes will resume at the MIMA pool October 3 at 10am on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Don't miss this opportunity to enjoy water aerobics - a low-impact activity that takes the pressure off your bones, joints and muscles. Water also offers natural resistance, which can help strengthen your muscles and you can add resistance devices to burn more calories! Exercising in the pool provides the toning and cardiovascular benefits of exercise on dry land with less strain and stress plus it allows for a greater range of motion helping with flexibility and balance. And most importantly, it is enjoyable, fun! As with any other exercise routine, just be certain you get medical clearance from your health care provider before taking the plunge. Call coordinator Peggy Frazier with questions ♥ 906 227 7625 January was another good month for Membership! We welcomed back two former Members, and we added two new Associate Members and two new Trial Members. In addition, we're delighted to report that four Social Members upgraded to Full Membership, so they can now enjoy all of our fun boating activities as well as reciprocity with other Yacht Clubs in Florida and across the nation. Please congratulate our Members who upgraded and welcome our new Members! Please thank our members who upgraded this past month and welcome our new Members! With so many new Members, we again ask for more current Members to be sponsors to these new Members. On February 3rd, we have invited some former Full Members to the Club to see the remodeled Burgee Bar, have lunch and drinks and to listen to the entertainment. The former Members must RSVP to attend the event. With hope, these Members will see the changes at the Club and re-join. If you would like to come join in the fun, PLEASE DO! It would be great to have current Members help us to meet with all the former Members. Please make a reservation if you will be coming for lunch on Saturday as we want to have appropriate staffing. Also, Equity Members, mark your calendar for Tuesday, March 6th as we are going to have a meeting followed by a banquet dinner so we can discuss the future of our Club! There will be more information in the coming weeks about this special event. Kathy Caruso and Vicki Bretthauer Membership Co-Chairmen

Ellie and Dave Everitt hosted a busy, noisy night of Trivia for the Club Members. Three sets of questions were given between the courses of a fantastic meal. Prizes were given to winning tables for each set. Another great event!

Thanks to Jim Ferry The Tiki Hut is one of the first things one sees crossing the Jolley Bridge. It’s such a beautiful sight. MIYC Member Grace Pantano took this lovely photo of a wedding rehearsal dinner held at the Club. Some of the party spilled out into the Tiki Hut area and to enjoy the view. The Mariner’s Fund would like to thank Jim Ferry for all his hard work on this project. Jim put in hours of work with phone calls and meetings to get the work completed. Hurricane Irma did not damaged the roof. It was built to last, thanks to Jim.

The Ship’s Store also sells household and kitchen items not found in this area. Much of the inventory comes from the New England area. Her committee is a dedicated group of women. Cynthia Hultquist - how does she do it all?! By Nancy Traiser Harpist, kick boxer and rock climber are just a few of Cynthia Hultquist’s hobbies. Although she has retired after a 20 year career in human resource management, she continues to work part-time. She came to MIYC in March of 2017 on a temporary assignment and has been contributing to the growth of the Club in myriad ways ever since. In addition to 18-20 hours a week at the Club where she is involved with Membership, reception, administration, and events, she also owns her own consulting firm providing human resources, mediation services and executive coaching to private clients. In her spare time, Cynthia also does trade shows as a vendor of collectible swords and knives for ANIME and acts as a hospitality hostess for the Wine Tasters of Naples. Cynthia has lived in Chicago, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Missouri, and Maryland. The daughter of a naval communications technician, Cynthia was born in

B r e m e r h a v e n Germany and spent her early years on a U . S . A r my b a s e there. After living all o v e r t h e U . S . including a year in England with Virgin Media, she finally s e t t l ed i n Sou t h F l o r i da i n 2003 , b e c o m i n g a permanent resident in 2016.

This consummate multi-tasker thrives in MIYC’s interruption-driven environment, moving seamlessly among her various roles—one minute answering a Member call for dinner reservations and the next escorting a prospective Member around the Club and providing them with details about the Club and the Membership categories. She enjoys the Staff and the Members, and spending time in a beautiful waterfront setting is an additional bonus.

MIYC/MIMA Parking Plan Update 2018 The new parking arrangements at the Marco Island Yacht Club and Marina Association have been in place for about 2 months now. For the most part they are working well, but as expected they will be tweaked as needed. Parking in the circle by the Clubhouse has been eliminated; and except for at the beginning, double parking as also been eliminated. Both of these have greatly improved the safety and appearance of the area. The rules have been accepted by most people as a necessary inconvenience (or irritant) and people have adapted. We will begin enforcing compliance with warnings, and increasing fines and penalties. In addition to the basic rule of parking only in your designated area, there are several other rules to keep in mind: ● Only 1 car per family or slip may be parked in the North parking lot. ● A handicap parking permit does not override the designated parking sides for the Marina or Yacht Club. You must park on the proper side. There are additional handicap parking spaces in the South lot and shuttle service can be provided. ● If you are Member of both organizations, you should park on the side for where you are going at that time. Overall, unlike many places on Marco Island, there are a sufficient number of parking spaces. Parking in the South lot is only a 1 minute healthy walk to your destination. On peak days, valet service will continue to be available and we are looking into providing free shuttles operating most of the time. Everyone appreciates your continued compliance and patience with the rules as they continue to be adjusted as needed. We welcome all suggestions to be considered. Please remember the overall purpose of the rules, and that a little consideration goes a long way. Joint Parking Committee

Great Way to Attend Miami Boat Show * One Day Bus Trip Friday, February 16th Dear MIYC Members, Walker Marine has reserved 25 seats for MIYC on their Naples bus going to the Miami Boat Show Friday, February 16th. This is a terrific boat show, but if you go by car, it's a long drive and once you get there parking is a nightmare, often very far from the entrance and exhibit area. Fortunately, Walker has a better solution for us! The bus will leave at 7am from Walker's Hideaway Marina of Naples , 475 North Rd., Naples FL 34104. Get there early and enjoy a continental breakfast as part of the package. You'll arrive at 10am, be dropped off right at the entrance, and will depart for the return trip at 4pm, arriving back at 7:30pm. Enjoy complimentary snacks and beverages on the way back. The $50 cost includes breakfast, round trip bus ride, Boat Show ticket, and snacks and beverages--I think that's a pretty good deal! Call me on 847-951-3400 if you have any questions. Then enjoy a fun day with fellow Club Members checking out the latest in boats and yachts! Jeff Comeaux MIYC Vice Commodore

This is a wonderful opportunity to spend a day on the water with other Marco Island boaters. Stay for lunch at the Marco Island Yacht Club and enjoy friends, food and music provided by Steve Reynolds. The parade will be led by the Marco Island Fire Dept. vessel, “J.W. Adams”. Boating Organizations are encouraged to participate and have their vessels grouped together in the presentation. Their members may also view the parade from courtyard and veranda of the Yacht Club where they will have a “front row” seat to all the activity. Bob Aylwin - Manager/Executive Chef

Ahoy Members of MIYC! Are we having fun yet? I know the Staff and I are keeping extremely busy! Season has begun! The traffic is becoming intense, coffee lines are doubling and I can feel the excitement in the air. I would like to personally thank Commodore Dixon for the past year under her guidance as Commodore. I enjoyed working with her very much. I would also like to extend a congratulations to our 2018 Commodore, Mr. Bob Winterhalter. The “Passing of the Burgee” at this year’s “Commodore’s Ball” was a wonderful evening filled with live music, great food, laughter and dancing. Thanks to all who attended for making it such a special evening. Operations in Food and Beverage continue to show favorable results both financially and in Member satisfaction. As we inject new life into our busy social calendar I am able to see the fruits of our labor. Our first “Clambake” on our beautiful new Burgee Bar was a big success with over 90 members and guests in attendance! Our January “Wine and Dine” was well received and as I mentioned, the “Commodores Ball” was what I like to call a home run. Other January events included “Boaters’ Night,” “Burgee Bar Grand Opening” (with over 140 persons in attendance), “Sunset

Cruise,” “Grand Sunday Brunch” and “Trivia Night.” - a busy month indeed. February is looking great as well. With all of the fun events ahead I am sure a good time will be found by all. Please let Pam or me know if there is anything special that you may need when attending these member events. With proper notice there is little that Pam or I cannot accomplish. Thank you in advance for the support.

Like everyone else, I will miss retiring dockmaster, Elmer Wheeler. Elmer loves to cook and has asked me on many occasions for recipes and techniques. I’m sure he has more spare time now to explore his cooking side and I wish him Godspeed into the future. Chef Bob

January was a busy month at MIYC with many members returning to Marco to escape the frigid north. In January, the Fishing Club had their first luncheon and has planned a backwater fishing excursion on February 5 for all Full and Associate Members. Last week, we conducted our first Sunset Cruise for 2018. Thirty-six members participated on the cruise aboard four yachts … Grand Pelican, Seafari II, Stimulus Package and Affinity. It was a great evening, capped off by a group dinner at the Burgee Bar. At our next Bridge Meeting, we are going to review the current roster of power and sailboats. If you own a boat and it does not appear on our current fleet list, p l e a s e c o n t a c t m e v i a e m a i l at [email protected] . Our goal is to have an accurate list of all boats at the Club. On April 5, the Club will hold our 3 rd annual Scavenger Hunt. This is a fun activity that involves tracking down clues for things seen from water e.g. a home w i t h 7 r oo f s , a sculpture of a dolphin, etc. The event typically takes about 4 hours with a picnic style lunch in Smokehouse Bay (boats can raft off each other). More information to follow. Jeff Comeaux Vice Commodore

four new cranes for the fountain should be arriving shortly and we hope to start mulching the beds in a couple of weeks. Thanks to Chip Pittman, our new Bu i l d i ng and Gr ounds Committee Chairman, for fixing the kitchen steamer and saving us a lot of money. Ch i p ’s expe r i ence and background will save our Club some serious dollars and I look forward to working with him.

The MIYC was swinging in January. The grand opening of the New Burgee Bar was a huge success. The Commodore’s Ball on January 20 th is the premier event of the year and we had a 14% increase in attendance over last year. Congratulations to Bob Winterhalter, our new Commodore, and a big thank you to our Past Commodore Lois Dixon for all she has done. We started our first regional dinner event featuring a magnificent buffet from the New England area. Chef Bob and the kitchen staff prepared the famous New England Clam Chowder along with mussels, oysters, shrimp, steamers, Clams Casino, Boston baked beans, corn on the cob, salad, and, of course, Maine Lobster. The fabulous dessert was none other than Boston Cream Pie. We even had some good old Narragansett Beer, thanks to Chuck and Meredith Downton. Here is a little bit of history about the Narragansett Tribe. The Narragansetts were one of the leading tribes of New England, controlling west of Narragansett Bay in present-day Rhode Island along wi th por t i ons of Connec t i cut and Eas tern Massachusetts. The Narragansett Brewing Company was founded in Cranston, Rhode Island in 1890. What a wonderful evening! The food was magnificent, and the service was excellent. Kudos to everyone who made the evening a wonderful success. We added a new 75” TV to our Burgee Bar thanks to Frank and Mimi Conner. We plan to relocate the 48” TV giving us three TVs in the Burgee Bar. This will make for great viewing for out Super Bowl Party on February 4 th . Be sure to sign up for the wonderful buffet and a great evening. GO PATRIOTS! We did make some progress on the landscaping and will continue to work on fixing up the courtyard. The

Sometimes we forget about the people who are working hard to maintain our club. Zachary and Maritza are two individuals behind the scenes who work hard every day fixing and cleaning the facility. If you happen to see them while you are at the Club, it would be nice to say thank you for all the work they do. The February calendar is loaded with a lot of fun filled activities so be sure to save the dates and make your reservations early. Remember the Club is open Wednesday thru Saturday for lunch and dinner and on Sunday for Brunch from 10 am – 1pm. The Burgee Bar is also open starting at 11:30 AM Wednesday through Saturday. We're Looking for Sponsors for New Members Are you in? Marco Island Yacht Club is growing! That's terrific, but it does bring new challenges, especially if we are to keep our reputation as the "fun and friendly" club on the Island! Prospective new Members often walk through the door without knowing a soul at the Club. That's why we would like to develop a list of Members who are willing to serve as Sponsors. What does a Sponsor do? • Meet the prospect and introduce them to others at Happy Hour • Sign the application as Sponsor • Continue to introduce them around the Club after membership is official • Invite them to join you for dinner or an event • Help them learn about all of the activities and events at the Club • Ensure that we get a photo and short bio for Communications • Generally "shepherd" them through their first month or two at the Club Being a Sponsor is a wonderful way to get to know some great new people and increase your own friendship circle. The Membership Committee Chairs will maintain the list of volunteer Sponsors and will call you when you are needed. We will try to match prospects and Sponsors by common interests, geography or some other dimension. Getting new Members off to a good start will enrich their experience and your own! Please email Cynthia Hultquist, our Membership Coordinator, at [email protected] or call 394-0199 x303 if you are willing to serve as a Sponsor. Thank you! As we settle into the mid-season, the Bridge is continuing to provide information on all of the many boating opportunities both inside the Club and out. With that in mind our Boater’s Night will be held this coming Wednesday, February 7 th at 6 pm. Our guest speaker will be Bob Diamond. Bob is well known to many around the Club with his associations with the Sailing Association of Marco Island (SAMI) and the Gulf Coast Sailing Club (GCSC). Bob is also the chief organizer behind the SW Florida Inter-Club Cruising Group which consists of many members of many Clubs and is open to all. This Group has a very active cruising schedule and Regattas planned well into the Spring of 2018 and beyond. Bob will discuss how the Clubs interact with one another and discuss some the trips they have planned

and give us a good overview of the state of boating here and around the Island. A question and answer session will follow Bob’s talk. I hope you can join us for what should be an informative Boater’s Night and partake in all the delicious food and friendship that our Club has to offer. Jim McKeown Rear Commodore

MIYC Fishing Club

A new MIYC Fishing Club was launched last month. The next meeting will be held on Thursday, February 15 th , at 4:30PM at the Burgee Bar. What is the MIYC Fishing Club? Many Club Members have an interest in fishing, yet they rarely fish in southwest Florida. Why not? Either they: ◦ Do not own a boat ◦ Are looking for a friend to fish with ◦ Or are unfamiliar with the area and not quite ready to go it alone in Marco Island The Fishing Club is a solution for Members to get out and fish on a regular basis. Who can participate? All members can attend the Thursday late afternoon meetings. At each meeting, we will discuss a variety of fishing topics from “what is biting” to how to catch them to tricks of trade. Going Fishing The goal is to set 1-2 fishing trips each month (one backwater, one offshore). Full, Equity and Associate Full Members may attend these trips (one of the many “on the water” benefits of Full membership). Members who are new to fishing need to: Purchase 2 rods and reels, tackle box, basic lures, hooks, leaders, etc. (available at Sunshine Ace on San Marco). If you do not know how to cast – start practicing. When we get out on the water, the fishing is often fast and furious and it’s not the right time to learn how to cast. For those who would like to fish backwater and offshore, please learn the following basic knots. They can be found on YouTube. · FG or uni-to-uni (connects braid to mono/fluorocarbon) · Rapala knot (connect mono/floro to a lure, hook, etc.) The 3 rd Thursday of each month will be our set time for Fishing Club meetings. For those who want to stay for dinner after the meeting, Thursday is Prime Rib night! Interested in joining the Fishing Club? Contact Jeff Comeaux at [email protected]
