Boater's Night Wednesday, February 5th Cocktails at 6, Dinner and Program at 7

Gentle Members, Have you ever had that Great Loop Dream?

Imagine …a salt breeze ruffles your hair as you set your own boat on a heading that will send you and your beloved mate (Admiral) on a voyage of unparalleled adventure! Comprising nearly 6,000 miles of strange and beautiful waters, America’s Great Loop lets you visit storied cities that

resonate with American history, like Savannah, Charleston, Norfolk or the Nation’s Capital itself. Glide through the Great Dismal Swamp, as George Washington did almost 300 years ago. Thrill to the sight of the Statue of Liberty as seen by our immigrant ancestors, from the deck of your own good ship. Stop by West Point, New York, as you did Annapolis, Maryland, two training grounds of American heroes. Be amazed by the pristine beauty of Canada, Georgian Bay, Lake Ontario, and the Rideau Canal. Ride the wake of the intrepid sailors of the Mackinac Race (subject of a recent Boaters’ Night), and celebrate in the Windy City’s Loop. Look for the ghost of Mark Twain as you ride down the Mighty Mississippi. Enjoy the lazy beauty of the Tennessee- Tombigbee waterway. Take trip to New Orleans for some gumbo and jazz. Make the big hop from Carrabelle to Tarpon Springs, and back home. Take a year, or two, or…?...to do it.

This is real adventure, a last frontier of pure and complete enjoyment, savored slowly and appreciatively, a lost great pleasure in an age of speed and flash.

Robert Creech is your Captain for the evening’s journey - America’s Great Loop Cruisers Association National Convention headliner speaker for the last several years. He will guide you through his year-long voyage, and will relate what it takes for a couple to face this kind of odyssey together, and the kind of magic this kind of boating can make in the lives of two ordinary sailors. Menu This very special presentation is paired with a special menu created by Chef Bob to include savory dishes found along the Great Loop route. 1 st Course South Carolina Deviled Egg with Baby Greens and Pure Lemon Cracked Pepper Vinaigrette Tennessee Corn Bread with Quebec Maple Syrup 2 nd Course – Entrée New Orleans Chicken Jambalaya with Boudin Sausage, Red Beans, Green Asparagus and Wisconsin Cheese Sauce Dessert Georgia Peach Cobbler with Caramel Pudding $30++ Don’t miss this rare insight into a truly life-changing experience for boating couples.

It’s a dream that you might just have to make come true! Invite a prospective Member. Reservations required. Call the Club: 239-394-0199

Muses From Past Commodore Bob Winterhalter Burgee Exchange with Royal Cork Yacht Club Last Fall, Diana and I traveled through England, Scotland and Ireland. We had a scheduled stop at the World’s Oldest Yacht Club - Royal Cork. We brought back their Burgee which we will present to the Bridge at their February 5 th Boaters’ Night. Cork is also known as the final stop of the Titanic. The Club is not actually located in Cork, Ireland, but about 30 miles southwest in the village of Crosshaven. While we were touring their Club, we met several other Commodores and Admirals from around the world, attending their International Council of Yacht Club’s Annual meeting. Many of the challenges discussed - membership, youth programs, etc. - seen universal. See you on the 5 th.

Boca Grande is like Palm Beach without the bling! Boca Grande Marina is tucked in near the entrance to Gasparilla Island just north of the Boca Grande pass. On our cruises we enjoy touring the island on golf carts, checking out the unique shops, and the famous Boca Grande Lighthouse Museum. The marina has full service, plus free wi-fi Internet, BBQ grills, a picnic area, shower and laundry facilities, and a pump-out station. On the 20th we will depart for South Seas Resort on Captiva Island , a resort and wildlife sanctuary with boundless opportunities for adventure and relaxation. The South Seas Marina dockage includes full access to all of the many resort amenities including pools for Aquafit. There is a 9 hole golf course and a resort trolley that takes you around the property and to the quaint shops of Captiva. On this cruise we will be visiting the infamous Cabbage Keys for lunch where the walls are covered with money! Plans also include the day on Useppa Island - an exclusive private island club with picturesque white cottages, pink pathways and lush tropical vegetation where we will have lunch at the exclusive Barron Collier Inn. Our visit to Tween Waters will be for dinner and the Crab Race Event. Your host, Commissioner Tim, sounds the kazoo, lifts the custom crab starting gate, fires his trusty squirt gun and they're off! You will be on the edge of your seat cheering. It is the stupidest thing you've ever seen but you'll be laughing and a little competition? Well that sounds like MIYC! And a chocolate kiss drink from the bar? Love it! There are many room options at the resort for boaters who wish to sleep ashore as well as land cruisers. Land cruisers can travel to the destination aboard one the of boats or drive. Trips like this one epitomize what MIYC is all about...great camaraderie, new friends, great food, and opportunity to share our love of boating. All full Members are invited to join the fun and to put life and laughter into your time on the water. Competition was cutthroat at the Annual January Trivia Night! Who knew so many folks would be so competitive over such little reward? Seriously, the questions were tough in three different categories - Transportation, Animals and Sports. Everyone will now remember that a group of Skunks are called "A Stench." Ellie Everitt as usual had everything arranged perfectly! The meal was a hit, especially the cherry pie a la mode for dessert. Suggested future topics for Trivia are Movies, History, TV and Marco Island! P.S. The Judges allowed Aeronaut as a correct answer for “One who pilots a Hot Air Balloon.” Everyone is looking forward to the next event!

Ellie Everitt and Vicki Bretthauer (left) took their judging very seriously! There was lots of whispering and quick writing at this fun event! Thank you, Ellie and Vicki!

MIYC Art Show and Bistro

The Art Gallery held on January 25 and 26 was a great success. Members were awed by the many talents of their Yacht Club friends. An art sub committee was formed last spring consisting of Henry Stanley, Kathleen Douglas, Nancy Traiser and Angela and Jon Holt. Henry 's years of experience in art presentation proved to be invaluable as he transformed the Harbour Room into a Gallery. After a call for artists was sent to the membership, a grand total of 21 members displayed fine art, ceramics, floral design, photography, greeting cards,, Nantucket baskets, crewel embroidery needlework, jewelry and painted glasses. The evening was staged as a French Bistro with Chef Bob serving Coq au Vin. Dinner was served at the Pointe. Alice and Tom Jobe dressed as a Mesieurs and Mesdames to greet at the door. Angela and Jon Holt gave the welcome in French and paid homage to the artists. When dinner was complete, the audience was served a glass of champagne upon entering the Harbour Room to view the show. There were many surprised looks as we took in the the talents of our fellow members. Credit is also due to Lisa Boyce for her signage done in calligraphy and to Patti Cohen for assisting in the production of the show.

Introducing the state-of-the-art MIYC Riverside Marina Wet Slip Membership

Because market demand for boats over 65 feet has grown substantially over the past 10 years, the inventory of available slips large enough to accommodate them in Naples and south to Marco Island is tight. In addition, and for the same 10-year period, Southwest Florida accounts for a 10% growth in boats 40 to 65 feet. The MIYC Riverside Marina will provide 27 new slips, ranging from 50 to 124 feet. All slips are designed to be a minimum of 24 feet wide.

Wet Slip Memberships Do you know someone who wants to buy a bigger boat, but they don’t know where to keep it? Tell them about our new state-of-the-art Marina! They’ll get a top-of-the-line boat slip and Full Membership in the Club, too! The sales team is ready to answer any questions! Membership sales team: Captain Geoff Fahringer: 239-253-4091 Lee Dorison: 561-756-7375 Ken Gandy: 239-877-3777 Web: www.marcoislandyachtclub.net MIYC Phone: 239-394-0199

Some slips will have lifts, all slips will have water, electricity, pump-out facilities, lighting and security cameras. A full-time Dockmaster will be on hand for any needed assistance, and each Wet Slip Membership includes member- ship as a Full Member in the Yacht Club. Construction is slated to begin in 2020, to be completed in early 2021. Because slips are in high demand, now is the time to take advantage of this one-of-a-kind, turn- key, pre- construction investment opportunity.

Noon Bridge

If you are like me, you remember learning to play bridge in college and then there was the “social” bridge at night or on a lucky day when you could get time off from your busy schedule. Then came an even busier time in my life with work, so many kid’s activities, and bridge went by the wayside. Well, it is time to get back in the swing of it. If you play bridge, have ever played bridge, or even want to learn how to play bridge, MIYC is the place to do it. We have a very lively group of “social” bridge players. New Members are most welcome! There is no pressure to remember everything about the game and there are willing teachers to help you remember and learn. We play every Wednesday at noon if there are at least four of us available to play. Chef Bob serves us an amazing “surprise” lunch before we begin play. Call or e-mail me at: 239-389-0825 [email protected]

Mah Jongg anyone? Thursdays - 1PM

Whether you're a newbie or an experienced player, you are welcome to join our new Mah Jongg group! We're kicking off this Thursday, starting with lunch at the Club at noon, and playing right after. (You can come for both lunch and play, or just to play.) RSVP now , if you'd like to play Mah Jongg. Let Karena know if you're available to play this Thursday or if you'd just like to be put on the email list for future play. Contact Karena: Voice or text @ 239-771-0888 email [email protected]

Commodore

January 2020 was a very special month for me and my family. On the 1 st , I assumed the duties as your Commodore, and on the 18 th , we all celebrated at the Annual Commodore’s Ball. We enjoyed great weather for the Change of Watch and Colors Ceremony in the courtyard, and the Ball in the Harbour Room was well attended to overflow capacity. Big thanks go out to Angela and Jon Holt and their Member Events Committee for joining with the Bridge to host this event. Chef Bob, Pam and Staff did an incredible job in dinner preparation and service. How lucky we are to have the Staff supporting us the members. Last but not least, I would like to thank the Club’s Past Commodores who participated in every way to make this a premier event. Looking ahead, we have many diverse boating activities planned. Number one is Blessing of the Fleet on Saturday, February 15 th . The fleet gathers in the Marco River at 10 am and will pass in review at 11 am. Captain Roy Hershberger and Past Commodore Bob Winterhalter are assembling the fleet and will publish the order. If you wish to participate in the Blessing, please sign up now. There will be Burgee Bar activities and our traditional buffet lunch in the Harbour Room. Please sign up early so you do not miss out. Next is the extended cruise to Boca Grande and South Seas Resort on Captiva February 17 – 22.

As of this writing, there are 13 boats with crews and 20+ land cruisers for a total of 50+ club members participating. Pete and Peggy Frazier have done it again like the Energizer Bunnies. Our extended cruising fleet is growing each and every year. Enjoy the experience by joining the cruising fleet. Please remember, if you plan to participate in Club boating activities, you must have a current 2020 Vessel

Enhancements to your Equity Membership

We have some really exciting news for Equity members. First, many of you have asked to have some form of recognition for being an Equity member. Your Membership Committee working with the Board of Directors has subtly redesigned the Equity name badge adding a line showing that you are an Equity Member. If you would like to have your name badge replaced, please send an email to Cynthia Hultquist at [email protected] showing how you would like your name to read on the new badge. You will then exchange your former badge for the new badge. Also, you may remember that the wine bin program was modified so that only Equity members are allowed to have bins on the property. MIYC Operations

I would like to welcome all our new Members to the Marco Island Yacht Club and I hope you will join in and enjoy all the activities our Member Events Committee and Bridge have planned for you this year. You can tell our regular Members have returned because we just finished the busiest January the Club has seen. The final numbers are not in yet, but my best guess is we were at least 25% busier than last January. Hang on to your hats because February is packed with some outstanding activities and expected to be busier than January. Therefore, it is extremely important that you make your reservations early, especially for the Member events. It will help us with ordering, planning and scheduling the appropriate kitchen, front- end Staff and Valets to provide the best possible service. Please refer to House Rules, “Reservations and Cancellations,” on the Member side of the website under MEMBER CENTRAL, drop down menu KEY DOCUMENTS. The Club is open for lunch (11:30am-2:00pm) and dinner (5:30pm-8:00pm) Wednesday through Saturday and Sunday Brunch (10:00am-2:00pm). Our next Grande Sunday Brunch is scheduled for February 9th. The Burgee Bar will also be open Wednesday through Saturday from 4:00pm to 8:00pm.

MIYC Member Events By Angela Holt

The events season is in high gear! Members celebrated the opening of the Burgee Bar with more hours and new menu items on January 11 with a night of karaoke. The Commodore's Ball was elegant, and the Art Gallery gave us a bird's eye view of the many talents of our Members. We rounded out the month with a competitive game of Trivia. As we move into February, the month starts out with a Super Bowl Party where we cheer on our teams and participate in a Super Bowl pool competing for prizes. Each month, Member Events hosts a Book Club and special accompanying luncheon, and a Twilight Golf Night followed by dinner at the Burgee Bar. Mark your calendars for a very special Valentine's Dinner and Dance to be held on February 14. Be sure to make your reservations early. Chef will be the guest speaker at “Lunch and Learn” on February 21 focusing on 'Let's Get Sauced’ . This year our celebration of Mardi Gras will be at the Burgee Bar during Happy Hour. Can you think of a better place to party? Beads and feathers will be the dress of the night.

A new venture this year will be the Supper Club held on February 29, a leap year day special. Frank Del Pizzo , a stand up comedian known in SW Florida, will keep you in stitches. Plans are in the works for our next Signature Event to be held on April 4...., 'Hooray for Hollywood' . Look for the eblast giving you heads up for the dress of the night.

Chairman’s Report

WOW – what a start to the year! The events have been spectacular and the participation has been off the chart! Starting with New Year’s Eve through the Commodore’s Ball, the Art Show and Dinner; as well as Trivia Night, the Members of the Marco Island Yacht Club have been treated to and participated in some incredible events with great entertainment and wonderful meals. In addition, we have had Boater’s Night, Sunset Cruise, the opening of the Burgee Bar for the Season. And the special interest groups – like the Twilight Golf, Fishing Club, and others have kept the Club hopping! I hope you are enjoying the Club as much as I am! And, the activities continue through February. The Super Bowl Party, Day Cruises, Valentine’s Day, and a ‘Lunch and Learn’ with Chef Bob are all on the calendar. The Blessing of the Fleet is scheduled for the 15 th . In addition, the February Extended Cruise is scheduled to visit Boca Grande and South Seas. And, we have a Mardi Gras Happy Hour scheduled for the 21 st . All in all - another great month is in store for our Members! Be sure to get your reservations in early as we have been operating at capacity and seating is first come, first served! We have also had some changes in our Committees. New chairs and changes in Membership of the Committees will certainly have fresh ideas and new perspectives in how we operate the Club. I continue to appreciate the time and support our members donate to the Club through the Committees and activities scheduled. The engagement and Member appreciation for the events is a direct result of Members who give of their time to help us deliver outstanding events and activities. We continue to move forward with our Riverside Marina Project. Bids from contractors have been

r e t u r n e d . D u r i n g February we will review the bids and select the c o n t r a c t o r f o r t h e project. We will begin working with the City on building permits and c o mm u n i c a t i n g t o various constituents about our project plans. We are still on track to begin working on the seawall in May. And we will begin r amp i ng up ou r sa l es activities in February. Watch for more information through

America’s Great Loop: One of the last frontiers of exploration, easy to imagine and to begin but tantalizingly difficult to fully complete. Join us on Boaters’ Night as we meet Robert and Kay Creech, experienced cruisers and veterans of the fabulous Great Loop. They will bring us aboard on their amazing journey, complete with adventure, thrills, plenty of anxious moments, issues that no one could have foreseen, and moments of indescribable beauty, all wrapped up in one glorious year of boating. But more than just a travelogue of 6,000 miles of cruising, Robert and Kay will give us their secrets about how to stay happy together as two people aboard a 42-foot boat for twelve months of enforced togetherness. “Cruising as a Couple” is their presentation, containing wisdom and advice that every cruiser and every boater should know. Don’t miss this very special Boaters’ Night, complete with a special Great Loop Menu from Chef Bob. Make your reservations now! Tom Wentworth Rear Commodore MIYC

Ahoy Members of MIYC! Wow! Our 2020 season has started with a bang! I am reminded of the iconic phrase “Time flies when you’re having fun”, we must certainly be having fun because these last 3 months have flown by like a feather in the wind. Just a couple of minutes ago, or so it seems, we were kicking off December with our traditional “Members Deck the Halls” Club decoration effort, and in a flash, we are through the holidays and installing a new Commodore. We must be having fun. Welcome to all of our new Members! If I haven’t met you yet, I look forward to meeting you! Please let Tina or your server know when you are here so I may say hello. For February we have lots planned for you. Make reservations early for any of our upcoming Club events, Super Bowl Sunday Buffet – Feb 2, Boater’s Night – Feb 5, Bob Aylwin - Manager/Executive Chef

Bob Aylwin Manager/Executive Chef

Grande Brunch – Feb 9, Twilight Golf Group - Feb 13 th just to name a few. Two of our prime events, Valentine’s Day on the 14th and Blessing of the Fleet on the 15th will be very popular and likely to sell out so get your reservations in ASAP. In addition, one of my favorites is a “Lunch and Learn” on Friday, February 21 called “Let’s Get Sauced” where I will be teaching you a couple of easy sauces as well as some classical more intense ones. (There could be wine involved! I love cooking with wine, sometimes I even put some in the sauce) I’m sure you have been seeing new faces around the Club as we continue to staff appropriately throughout our busy season. As you always do, please introduce yourselves to them when you can. Our Employees are the backbone of our operation and I am fortunate to have some fine people around me. Let’s make them feel welcome. Thanks to all of you for your patience as we serve these record number of Members and food and beverage banquets. We haven’t batted 1000 on every experience, but by promoting a positive attitude towards our challenges, we learn how to better the next one. At the risk of redundancy, please make your reservations early and often. See you at the Club! Chef Bob

Please, remember to introduce yourself to new Members. Trial Members have red name badges and MIMA Burgee Members have blue name badges. Make them feel Welcome!
